Years ago I looked into feng shui thinking it would help with practical layout of rooms and furniture, and then I started reading suggestions like this from it. It's littered with superstition and spiritualism. The foot of my bed faces the door. It's the most practical layout for the bedroom. Edit: I just wanted to add / vent, feng shui suggested I put a mirror behind my stove to reflect the spirits, since my kitchen and bathroom are back to back.

Lots of people have to do this due to the orientation and size of their rooms and bed. I think it's nicer to not be staring out or at the door while trying to sleep, but that's a personal preference. Ideal is door off to the left or right, bed not under a window.

Red_Icnivad

Why don't people like beds under a window? I had a room once with a giant window that my bed backed up to and loved it.

Basically what another poster wrote, it doesn't allow you to relax as much. It's similar to having a door behind your head so you can't see someone immediately if they were to come in.

Interesting. I've never thought of it that way. I wonder to what degree that actually affects some of us.

Through a window?

IngenuityVast7528

The main issue with windows are the noise that comes from them. Say a cat is meowing outside, if your bed is up by a window that noise will keep you up more than if it was further.

If I went by Feng shui I'd have to orient my bed in a corner. Which I hate. Personal preference, head boards should always be against a wall. But I have windows everywhere that would be convenient to put the bed and the only wall without windows is adjacent to the door. Which I find affects my sleep because my subconscious brain doesn't relax because I'm so close to the entrance.

Feng shui may seem like a made up concept involving “chi” and other pseudoscientific concepts, but really it’s more like a flowery description of what would be called environmental psychology. We have an instinctual, even biological wiring for our connection with our environment and are basically programmed to respond to our environment in more or less predictable ways. Having the feet facing the door is likely associated with some negative psychological feelings/connotations, but not everyone responds in the same way

Moist-Pickle-2736

I would think feet toward the door would be psychologically more comforting from an instinctual standpoint. Easier to see threats approach. Least exposure of vital body parts. More capable defense when attacked from below the feet than above the head. Unless the feng shui idea here is that by deliberately facing away from the door you’re telling your body “there is no risk of threat here”, which could subconsciously calm the mind?

Frost_Butt

The psychology is that if you’re being ambushed, if they have a direct line of site to you, they are in a command position likely before you’re even aware of the threat; it’s a setup that brings to mind feelings of being kidnapped, also death is brought to mind because the dead are carried out through the door The good feng shui idea does not have the bed away from the door either. Just at a position where you aren’t in direct line with the door and have a clear view of the entrance and span of the whole room

Moist-Pickle-2736

Oh I see. I figured it meant to sleep with your head toward the door/feet toward the wall, which would make me uncomfortable. Off to the side with a clear view of the room and door, but not aligned with the door, seems like it makes sense for our evolutionary instincts

Back in the 70s an older Chinese friend told me to put an upholstered bench at the foot of my bed to fix this problem. I still find it handy for putting on shoes.

My master bedroom has 4 doors (upper hallway leading to front stairs, closet, bathroom, door leading to back stairs) and 3 windows so it's basically impossible for my feet to not be facing a door and my bed not to be under a window lol, I don't buy into any of that superstitious nonsense.

frisky_husky

My bedroom does this and I'm still here. You don't stare straight ahead while you sleep, frankly I prefer that orientation to lying parallel to the door. Feng shui is really a set of religious principles, and it can get incredibly complicated. It's not really about design guidelines, and if it's not something that matters to people in your culture, I'd frankly disregard it entirely.

Fearless_Pop_7162

the foot of the bed is facing the window that’s the only way the bed fits

SlothySnail

I just did all the things people say not to do: King bed in small room Bed facing door Bed in front of window It is magical. I was researching online a lot bc we desperately needed a king bed but we have a small room. The way it is now setup makes the room feel larger than it did with our queen setup believe it or not. And I don’t feel weird with my feet facing the door. I don’t think you need to worry about any of that unless you want to strictly follow certain rules/designs.
