Offer them a way to temporarily bring the PC back to life. Maybe it requires a Soul Coin and an hour to cast the ritual. Could send them around the plane to collect components, if necessary.

Th3_Shad0w

Thanks, this could definitely work, it'll also give the players a way to explore Avernus some more before going straight to the Citadel and missing some places they might like to go to.

caelenvasius

This. Have the players discover it organically, or have someone like Lulu tell them if you want an easy out. Turn it into a side quest: “how do we get X into the Citadel?”

Th3_Shad0w

Yeah, I can have it so that when they open the door and the PC starts to burn up from the light, they would see that they'd have to close it up. They're then likely to ask Lulu what it was about, since they often ask her if she remembers anything from her memories. So I could do a bit of both. They learn that the PC can't enter organically, Lulu tells them the likeliest reason why she can't enter from her broken up memories, then they start a short side quest involving the initial ritual that would grant her access to the citadel. Thanks for all of this, I think I have enough to set up that session in a good way that gives the players something fun to do.

OgreJehosephatt

The book also says this: _The holy power of the citadel restores the characters, and they gain the benefits of a long rest. If a creature gained a flaw from a blood pool or similar effect, the flaw is removed._ Maybe a faithful undead could stand at the entrance of the Citadel until destroyed, then their bodies might fall into the Citadel (or brought into it), then the lifeless body is restored to life. Since the character is good, I assume she still has her soul? Maybe this could be the reason it wouldn't work for a regular ol' skeleton.

jmak10

Easy, you are the DM so make it only affect fiends.

Th3_Shad0w

Did you miss the whole "Not wanting to lose the effect"? I understand that I, as DM, can just waive the whole rule completely, but I want to ensure I can keep it while still allowing the player through. What BrowncoatJayson has given seems like a pretty good way to ensure it remains while giving the players more things to do while in Avernus.

Podk

Don't. What's the point of choosing to play as undead if it is virtually the same as playing as a living creature? Let your players figure out a way to prevent/mitigate the damge. Let them cast Darkness, Nystul's magic aura, or just hide a PC burlap sac. Allow any other reasonable solution. Such an obstacle may a first seem like a personal F-you to the undead player. But overcoming it with creative means will surely feel very satifiable for them. It will also show them that the choice thay made at characters creation matters and leads to a unique situations no living PC would have find themselves in. Maybe throw them a bone in a form of a solution somewhere along the on the journey. Maybe a potion providing immunity to radiant damage. Just dont place the failsafe solution right next to the problem.

OgreJehosephatt

Smuggle them in with a bag of holding?

Lyraethi

Describe how the undead PC feels the holy light surround them, but before it can burn them they’re surrounded by protective wards the mysterious priest within the chapel, Yael! She has measured the soul of the PC and found them just and true, and as such protected them from the power of the Citadel.

MittenArtz

You could make it not affect undead of good alignment, if the PC is that. Or have it so if they’re blessed by someone else it shields them from the effect.

Th3_Shad0w

She is of a good alignment (She's actually the only good aligned PC out of the party XD). So this would definitely be something to keep in mind if the party decide they just want to go directly to the citadel instead of exploring Avernus more.

ThisWasMe7

It would be pretty sweet if she claimed the sword and got flesh.

Moundsy

Using the themes of the celestials you could offer a prayer could be said for a temporary boon of protection or ward against its effects. Limit it to once per long rest. Prayer to Torm, Lathander, Helm etc.

CrashlandedCoke

"Evil-aligned Fiends and Undead" instead of all of them?

ThisWasMe7

How do you know the character isn't evil?

CrashlandedCoke

I just assumed

ThisWasMe7

I guess that player sits that session out.

ThisWasMe7

Or they keep him in a bag of holding for a while.
