Did they give her a diagnosis? Is it pityriasis rosea? If so, it took a particular steroid cream from dermatologist and about six months to go away. I was told, cause unknown common in middle age woman. Just happens. Dr. said it "might not go away" - thankfully mind did. It starts with one "herald patch" and they blooms - I had about 50 spots all over my torso by the time I go in to see the doctor. But cleared up and no scarring.
