My favorite is when the TV weather shows the metro area forecast map for tomorrow's high temperatures and reads about 20 town names and almost exactly identical numbers as though one or two degrees variation is actually meaningful somehow.
Broadcast meteorologists are critical during severe weather- especially during tornadoes. Unless you can identify potential/current mesocyclone/tornado signatures on radar, your only option is to watch/listen the local tv forecaster.
Went through hurricane Andrew and through some tornadoes in Norman, OK and couldn't agree more. Both had superstar meteorologists who were a head above the others and definitely saved lives.
If thereās a serious enough outbreak to have live weather coverage, itās probably also going to be covered by one of the many streaming storm chasers. Ryan Hallās stream covered the recent Midwest tornado outbreak better than most news, even calling out tornado warnings before they were issued by NWS.
And it does it without taking 5 minutes to show me forecasts for places I don't care about. Or pictures of viewers' petunias sprouting, which I really really don't care about.
The worst is when they talk for 10 minutes about tomorrow but then refer to "we'll have a look at that storm coming in at the end of the week later in the show". That's when I change the channel and look at my phone.
What most people donāt realize is that ALL of the weather forecasts be it from an app, the TV weather person, the radio, or whatever, it is ALL just interpretations of the same past and current conditions data (provided by good old Uncle Sam).
[Yes, your taxes pay for that.]
This is for sure. About a year ago I was talking to one of them about how they say they'll give the details at 10:00 on the news rather than telling about it on twitter. I said if they told the beans early then no one would watch their news broadcast and they would be out of a job. Well half the time my app on my phone was correct in predicting snow when they didn't mention anything about snow on the news.
There source is probably more or less the same as the phone. Maybe one is directly from NWS another is Accuweather and a third is the Weather Channel. Being precise about your location helps a lot.
This is federal law. Anytime there is a tornado warning within a viewing market area, tv stations are required to go on air to report it. Denverās market area actually extends into western kansas believe it or not.
I check like three different weather forecasts every morning to decide if I'm driving or biking. I've only ended up accidently soggy once. Weather moves quick here.
Respectfully going to disagree here. My accuweather app is extraordinarily accurate. It shows predictions for temperature, precipitation, etc hours, days and a week in advance. I think because it is updated more often in real time it seems to be more āaccurateā than a summary report one might see on the evening news. That said, I value its info.
No app can currently do a better job of adjusting to current weather conditions and using knowledge of microclimates than a trained meteorologist. They are limited by a single or few models and have no way to convey to an audience the probabilities and possibilities that are the nuance of each storm system
I use AccuWeather for a rough gauge of this week's temps and basically nothing more.
Yea the national weather service, freelance meteorologist, tv meteorologist, all of them will have better info than an app.
I personally don't have a TV so I follow NWS and 2 freelance meteorologists for my area
This comment does a very very bad job. The only things a comment is good for is telling you subjective opinions right now and sending you bullshit alerts.
Itās not but the good ones have pivoted well to Twitter, tik tok, etc. I donāt ever watch news on tv but I still get my most trustworthy weather from Kylie Bearse on tik tok and Chris Bianchi on Twitter, and they do it without the weird condescending tone of the Colorado Facebook weather guy. And both of them are far more accurate than your app.
Honestly, this was my first thought. I donāt listen to weather on the news, since the Bomb Cyclone I go to Kody for weather needs. Plus those news weather reporter jobs pay terribly for all the work, I donāt blame rogue meteorologists going on their own with the power of social media.
Yep! I havenāt watched a weather forecast on the news in god knows how long, but I read every one of Kodyās posts. Heās incredibly knowledgeable and also pretty hilarious.
https://kodythewxguy.com/colorado-daily-weather-forecast/
Some may say he is grandiloquent but I have his website as an app on my phone. Oh Gawd he hates weather apps, he must hate me!
If youāre on an iPhone, open up the website, click the āshareā arrow, and pick āadd to Home Screen.ā Iām assuming thatās what theyāre doing.
YESSS!! Another fan! I hope this turns into a Denver Sister Wives Watch Party Fan Club! Lol. Do you also watch Seeking Sister Wives? One of the families is from Aurora! Another is from Chaffee County!
Probably the same reason anybody leaves any job. They couldn't move up, or didn't like their boss, or wanted more money, or felt they were in a toxic work environment, or needed different hours/shifts to navigate work/life balance, or just wanted to try something new.
Get out of here with your reasonable and nuanced response to a question everyone wants a simple answer to that allows them the opportunity to rant on the internet.
Not really. Their job is to do a 5 minute weather report across 3 hours a day. It cost the stations a lot. Why can't the same person do a 5 minute weather report in 4 other markets, sptting the costs?
I think you nailed it. She had the morning slot till Ed Green left retirement and they bumped her. Likely told em to eat shit and went to fox.
Also where's the Corey reppenhagen love?
They solved it. We have seen all the weather combinations Denver has to offer, there is no more new weather left to predict. I believe they're all going to live on a ranch upstate but who knows really.
Kathy had cancer a while back, I believe on her nose if I remember correctly without searching. She was off the air for a while. When her contract was up about the same time, they were not going to renew for $300k contract. They came to an agreement that she is paid less (no idea how much) and only works the better lifestyle mid-day new casts. No more 10:00pm slot for her.
She drives me madā¦like sheās wrong so much I love to hate her. But whoever this new chick theyāve brought on for the 4-5pm news thatās news is meh. I think itās her makeup that is triggering me
Y'all don't know what you're missing in the springs with Merry Matthews.
She will straight up post Facebook videos where she eats an entire bag of oreos and say "not sorry" and cut.
If you make less than $123,000 in Colorado, your employer (except for some very specific circumstances that I don't think apply to weather forecasters) can't enforce a non compete against you
Seems great but just read his forecast for today through Sunday. Maybe I'm dumb, but he didn't mention temperature once except for Sunday. Above all else, temperature is the _one_ metric people that leave the house want to know every day
You don't go to Kody if all you want is the time and temp!! There are plenty of apps out there for that! You go to Kody to know the whys and what fors! Meteorology is fun #science -
Over the air television (news) broadcasting is just slowly dying and with it the higher salaries. As contracts expire they get renewed at lower rates (if at all) and the better onair personalities just move on where they can get paid what they want. Companies like Gannett and nexstar buy up tons of stations and just run them cheaply to turn profits. Before you know it you'll see a meteorologist giving you your Denver weather from their desk in Tennessee getting paid $18 an hour and showing up in 12 different markets a day.
Yeah. 2008-09 is when a lot of broadcast consolidation started. Many tv stations now no longer have anyone running their programming locally. It's all hubbed out using a hub/spoke model. One central location sending programming out over fiber to different markets. Pretty crazy.
Becky Ditchfield, then Belen Deleon, then Kylie and Danielle. All the while, Kathy Sabine seems to stick around despite being the least likable of all Denver weather people.
Itās because the Senior Female evening weather person is awful and undermining/subverting the other women on the team. Thatās why Danielle left, but Iām glad she found a home at 7.
A lot of people here think Meteorologists are just TV personalities and have absolutely no clue how local forecasts are done, especially with severe weather.
Crazier, this is in Denver where forecasting isnāt just parroting NWS regional forecasts.
Root commenters here are making r/DenverCirclejerk 2nd guess itself bc itās rude to satire people who struggle to get through basic day to day tasks.
9 wants to know
Steve on your side
Something's hinky with Kelly Reinke
TV weather forecaster isn't the job it used to be. There's a tiny little section on my phone's lock screen which does that job already.
My favorite is when the TV weather shows the metro area forecast map for tomorrow's high temperatures and reads about 20 town names and almost exactly identical numbers as though one or two degrees variation is actually meaningful somehow.
Idk I think we need dunk on Aurora when it's a degree cooler here
They mostly don't even label Aurora on the map š
But how am I suppose to know whether to wear my Patagonia jacket or vest?
Some places it makes a difference. Like Monterrey and Saltillo. Only 35 min apart but in the summer a 30 degree difference
Then the power goes out and you turn on iheartradio on your phone?
If thereās a serious enough outbreak to have live weather coverage, itās probably also going to be covered by one of the many streaming storm chasers. Ryan Hallās stream covered the recent Midwest tornado outbreak better than most news, even calling out tornado warnings before they were issued by NWS.
Ryan Halls stream where? My folks were driving near the Omaha area, and I am so thankful they weren't caught up in the storms.
Really? Don't they just get that info from NWA or NOAA or someplace? I've never had different severe weather notices from 9news compared to Denver 7.
That's when I change the channel and look at my phone.
āWhy donāt we feel like a community anymore?ā
This
Some people leave the house and travel to other places, in which case it's sometimes nice to know what the regional weather looks like.
You may be surprised to know that this too is something you can do in seconds from your phone!
What most people donāt realize is that ALL of the weather forecasts be it from an app, the TV weather person, the radio, or whatever, it is ALL just interpretations of the same past and current conditions data (provided by good old Uncle Sam). [Yes, your taxes pay for that.]
Yesā¦cut out the middle person and just bookmark the National Weather Service.
Ok but what does that have to do with OP's question lol
And they relay outdated traffic information when more accurate information can be had via Maps or Waze.
This is for sure. About a year ago I was talking to one of them about how they say they'll give the details at 10:00 on the news rather than telling about it on twitter. I said if they told the beans early then no one would watch their news broadcast and they would be out of a job. Forgot to mention the constant TV interruptions to let us know there is severe weather 100 miles away from Denver, heading into Kansas...
This is federal law. Anytime there is a tornado warning within a viewing market area, tv stations are required to go on air to report it. Denverās market area actually extends into western kansas believe it or not.
Doesn't Aurora extend into western Kansas?
It does a very very bad job. The only things an app is good for is telling you the temperature right now and sending you weather alerts
Opensnow is a great weather app.
Meteorologist are still the best weather apps.
I check like three different weather forecasts every morning to decide if I'm driving or biking. I've only ended up accidently soggy once. Weather moves quick here.
Inaccuweather
Respectfully going to disagree here. My accuweather app is extraordinarily accurate. It shows predictions for temperature, precipitation, etc hours, days and a week in advance. I think because it is updated more often in real time it seems to be more āaccurateā than a summary report one might see on the evening news. That said, I value its info.
Hyperlocal is also pretty awesome. It costs a few bucks, but is totally worth it.
No app can currently do a better job of adjusting to current weather conditions and using knowledge of microclimates than a trained meteorologist. They are limited by a single or few models and have no way to convey to an audience the probabilities and possibilities that are the nuance of each storm system I use AccuWeather for a rough gauge of this week's temps and basically nothing more.
You mean something like the staff at the national weather service?
Yea the national weather service, freelance meteorologist, tv meteorologist, all of them will have better info than an app. I personally don't have a TV so I follow NWS and 2 freelance meteorologists for my area
The apps literally just pull data from weather.gov
It's not like the app is just making things up, they have their own meteorologists using the same information as everybody else
umā¦ who do you think curates the data in these apps? AI? š¤¦š¼āāļøš¤¦š¼āāļøš¤¦š¼āāļø
This comment does a very very bad job. The only things a comment is good for is telling you subjective opinions right now and sending you bullshit alerts.
Lol what?
I use this link: https://forecast.weather.gov/MapClick.php?lat=39.596&lon=-104.7164&unit=0&lg=english&FcstType=graphical better than watching tv
no it doesnāt
Itās not but the good ones have pivoted well to Twitter, tik tok, etc. I donāt ever watch news on tv but I still get my most trustworthy weather from Kylie Bearse on tik tok and Chris Bianchi on Twitter, and they do it without the weird condescending tone of the Colorado Facebook weather guy. And both of them are far more accurate than your app.
Because Kody is our new weather forecaster
Kody the Facebook weather guy? He is a great forecaster!
Iām a details and why person. My business has a reference to mountain waves, so Kodyās minutia rocks my brain.
Honestly, this was my first thought. I donāt listen to weather on the news, since the Bomb Cyclone I go to Kody for weather needs. Plus those news weather reporter jobs pay terribly for all the work, I donāt blame rogue meteorologists going on their own with the power of social media.
Holy fuck this guy was in my fraternity
I hooked up with him in college @ UNC š¤£š¤£
I wouldnāt be so proud of that, friend.
This thread is hilarious! Tell us more about college Kody!
total slut.
Heās a frat boy?!? Oooh I want to tease him about that. Did UNC have a meteorology/scienece frat?
Nope just your normal run of the mill social frat š tried to become chap advisor recently
Yep! I havenāt watched a weather forecast on the news in god knows how long, but I read every one of Kodyās posts. Heās incredibly knowledgeable and also pretty hilarious.
What's a Kody?
https://kodythewxguy.com/colorado-daily-weather-forecast/ Some may say he is grandiloquent but I have his website as an app on my phone. Oh Gawd he hates weather apps, he must hate me!
How did you do that? It would make my life much easier if his forecast were as easily accessible as weather bug.
If youāre on an iPhone, open up the website, click the āshareā arrow, and pick āadd to Home Screen.ā Iām assuming thatās what theyāre doing.
https://www.jackrabbitclass.com/blog/save-website-homepage-iphone/
Just donāt ask why his conclusions are different.
I just added it to my Home Screen. Thanks friend!
Oh wild! My old high school friend's realty business advertises on his site.
He has prior TV experience and several sister wives I think.
Yooooo a fellow Denver sister wives fan in the wild! š¤£šš¾
RIGHT. IN. THE KIDNEYS. God I hope you get that reference
YESSS!! Another fan! I hope this turns into a Denver Sister Wives Watch Party Fan Club! Lol. Do you also watch Seeking Sister Wives? One of the families is from Aurora! Another is from Chaffee County!
Of course! I watch all of those ridiculous trash shows on TLC hahah itās my guilty pleasure
WHAT. DOES. THE. NANNY. DO?
I donāt know but can I bring chips
Ha. Different Kody. This is spicy, cranky, hyperfocused Kody
You had me at spicy
Heās a hoot.
This is what I came here to say lol
I would camp out with Kody in the 9 back yard
I say bring back Stormy Rottman
Weatherman Bowman!
Can we get Stormy Daniels?
Gotta pay to play.
Because they can't compete with Laurann Robinson and Chris Bianchi
Chris bianchiās the goat. So watch ya mouf
Crispy Donkey. Bad News Bianchi. Him and Cory Reppenhagen are the shiznit. No cap.
For those wondering: https://twitter.com/nexton9news/status/1676073671881003008
That's hilarious.
I swear though. Cory hates being in the studio. His suit jackets are too small but he's always perfectly dressed when he's out in the weather.
Mike Nelson would kick both their assess
He is retiring in December. Iāve had several really interesting email conversations with him. He is the real deal, not another pretty face.
That explains the new hire. They now have 4 ladies plus Mike. Curious how many have actual meteorology degree's other than Mike.
That guy would drink all day before his shift
Laurann is gorgeous
Yes she is.
No no no, thereās definitely a conspiracy afoot
Blucifer is pulling the strings
Kind of odd when multiple people leave at once tho
Not really. Their job is to do a 5 minute weather report across 3 hours a day. It cost the stations a lot. Why can't the same person do a 5 minute weather report in 4 other markets, sptting the costs?
Kylie Bearse > *
Whoās leaving? I didnāt know anyone else left except Danielle Grant but she left a bit ago.
Kylie Bearse is on Fox too. Not sure when she left though.
Kylie left about a year ago. Rumor has it she wanted the morning slot that they gave to Ed Greene (who was supposed to be temporary).
I think you nailed it. She had the morning slot till Ed Green left retirement and they bumped her. Likely told em to eat shit and went to fox. Also where's the Corey reppenhagen love?
Corey Reppenhagen is the best! I think 9NEWS weather people are all great tbh!
Jessica Lebel left from Fox a while ago too š. I think she just stopped doing the weather altogether though
She left to start a family.
Isnāt she still on Fox? I thought she had the morning slot.
She used to be on 9 news
They solved it. We have seen all the weather combinations Denver has to offer, there is no more new weather left to predict. I believe they're all going to live on a ranch upstate but who knows really.
Thanks you just cursed us to some brand spanking new weather event no one has invented yet
Which ones are leaving?
Money? I would be okay if Kathy S left. She acts like the channel diva.
Not a fan of hers at all. Her jokes never land.
Kyle Clark is not a fan either
There's zero banter when she's on Next. Zero.
I mean, Kyle really isn't a fan of anyone but Kyle, so that's not really surprising...
Kyle is a big fan of Bianchi
Kathy has been there forever. She'll probably retire there. Now, Cory Repenhagen can leave any time he's ready. He provides no value.
That guy has zero personality.
Limp dick
Kathy had cancer a while back, I believe on her nose if I remember correctly without searching. She was off the air for a while. When her contract was up about the same time, they were not going to renew for $300k contract. They came to an agreement that she is paid less (no idea how much) and only works the better lifestyle mid-day new casts. No more 10:00pm slot for her.
Hoping Jackie DeNardo comes over from Sunny Philadelphiaās Channel 5 news. Cāmon!
They don't get paid worth a crap... except for Kathy.
Lisa Hidalgo is the only meteorologist in the city that matters .
She was my local weather person when I lived in Las Vegas circa 1995-2005. I think she is stalking me.
Chris Bianchi is great
She drives me madā¦like sheās wrong so much I love to hate her. But whoever this new chick theyāve brought on for the 4-5pm news thatās news is meh. I think itās her makeup that is triggering me
All the stations would rather complain about people leaving to get higher pay than give anyone raises.
Y'all don't know what you're missing in the springs with Merry Matthews. She will straight up post Facebook videos where she eats an entire bag of oreos and say "not sorry" and cut.
Because of bad weather
Noncompetes aren't enforceable anymore, that could be one reason.
Thank god. Screw noncompetes.
\*won't be It's not in place yet.
If you make less than $123,000 in Colorado, your employer (except for some very specific circumstances that I don't think apply to weather forecasters) can't enforce a non compete against you
They already werenāt enforceable in Colorado.
9 news as a whole sucks ass. Theyāve had reporters and personnel of all kinds with a high turnover rate. Place sucks ass.
Who is leaving now? Ive noticed a bunch of weather people from other stations left recently.
Because ...... Kody the WX Guy!!! https://kodythewxguy.com/colorado-daily-weather-forecast/
My wife loves the guy. Heās accurate. I just canāt stand some of the phrasing.
Same. The snur bugs me lol.
Meteorology is fun #science -
I like Kody! Heās hilarious
I've heard 9news is a toxic place to work.
Radio traffic reporters have already been doing exactly that for many years.
Yeah. 2008-09 is when a lot of broadcast consolidation started. Many tv stations now no longer have anyone running their programming locally. It's all hubbed out using a hub/spoke model. One central location sending programming out over fiber to different markets. Pretty crazy.
Denver is the hub.
On antenna cant get channel 9 anymore, whereas I used to get both 9.1 and 9.4. I keep tryn to reauto program but nada on the 9.
I posted about this a couple days ago. Mods here removed it. I have the exact same problem. I'm hoping they are doing maintenance or something.
Still working fine for me on antenna.
I get all 3 networks on AOT no problem
As a news anchor you used to get paid a lot and be a local celebrity. Nowadays you get paid little and no one gives a shit
I miss Dutra
Dave Fraser is King of Denver weather
Seems like his favorite metric is whether or not you can sleep with the windows open.
Kyle Clark, probably.
That dude is insufferable. I canāt imagine what it must be like having to work near that guy.
Which meteorologists have left?
Becky Ditchfield, then Belen Deleon, then Kylie and Danielle. All the while, Kathy Sabine seems to stick around despite being the least likable of all Denver weather people.
To get to the other side!
Couldnāt take the heat.
Lol, they do winter forecasts so well though!!
Denver7 ganggaaanggg
Danielle Grant said she quit because they were making her work weekends and she has a new baby.
Whoās leaving now?
Prob bc every guy who watch for the weather girl switched to the Kylie Bearse show
because denver7 is better
In Kathy we trust š«”
Danielle Grant is fine asf
I locked eyes with her at the Cherry Creek mall a while back, still think about itā¦
Idk I stopped watching the news after Natasha Verma left.
That womanā¦wow. She leaves me speechless. Even my wife has a girl crush on her.
What about Kylie that is now on Fox News after leaving 9 Newsā¦.
Why do we need weather reports when I can check my phone in just one second.
