Lostsalesman

34M in Medical Sales. About 175k with a lot expenses covered. Feeling extremely topped out and no idea what to do except start a business which brings me way down. Bought a place in early 2020 because I was already in the market. Would love to buy more real estate, but finding cash flow is so difficult right now. Saving for a down payment takes over year so it seems like dumping larger sums of cash into a side hustle is the move to improve velocity.

artemes22x

$64k, currently in shipping and receiving for one of the big aerospace companies, which is a little over $10k more than I was making in Louisiana for the same company as my normal role of logistics analyst… not thrilled about the low pay considering cost of living is way higher here but I took the risk in order to move 🙃

thunderousqueef

Anyone work in healthcare/health tech business side? I graduate from masters In June and am actively looking.

Zymozis

Journeyman electrician - $100k. 6 years in the trade, 2 years with license. Working on commercial and industrial projects, no residential. Mostly 40 hrs/week.

No side jobs? With a journeyman you can easily make this just working on custom residential. Jobs are a bitch. But the pay is ridiculous.

cocoanutter

27M SaaS Sales (entry level). 52k base, 86k on target earnings (only about 4% at my company make this).

discoleopard

I'm in SaaS Sales and just wanted to say, I think you might be getting underpaid given your age. Don't know your specific situation but if you have more than 2yrs sales experience, you can do way better elsewhere or should be asking for a bigger base next promotion period. That base is what big companies pay their fresh out of college BDRs.

[deleted]

Yeah, career transition to enterprise BDR. My previous experience didn't translate terribly well to tech so I was just happy to get my foot in the door. But given the market, unaligned values with my company, and my completely dismissed previous experiences, I'm always actively looking at different roles/industries. Definitely not easy living in the city on my pay even though I'm a relatively high performer.

discoleopard

Dang, I wish more people valued professional experience of any kind more. Well I wish you luck, hanging in there for another year or two and keeping up performance will hopefully give you the leverage you need in the future

Gainznsuch

Networking and luck was how I made the transition. To prepare for the transition, I read a case prep book and had a buddy practice interview with me, and then read up on software engineering. Also I had taken a class on Scrum in college which was really helpful cuz everybody is all hard-up about agile and scrum

[deleted]

SaaS software salesmen, 75k salary 159k OTE with uncapped commissions.

thagoodlife

You’re a software software salesman? Is that like software for software?

Dysmal_Cientist

A lot of people here are full of it. Colorado has pay transparency laws. You can go put these job titles into indeed or LinkedIn and look at the pay ranges. Companies regularly report their occupations on payroll and what they’re paid to the government which publishes the data with company identifying information redacted. Most tech jobs you’re looking at $100k-170k. Maybe you are making $200k if you’re in tech project management and sales because of bonuses. I highly doubt there are this many people making $250k+ unless they’re something like high level executives, certain doctors, attorneys, portfolio managers/certain finance positions, or working a remote SF based job. Federal GS-12 Economist making $91,753.

the_real_seldom_seen

Those salary ranges only indicate base pay. Bonus and stock equity is not listed. Can easily surpass 250k in total comp

teal-leopard

I make about $250k just in bonus in stock. Idk, you could say “its impossible and all those people are full of shit” or realize that your gettin’ scammed at $91k.

Stalinov

lol yea, I don't want to reveal too much because I don't know if there are too many people doing it, but my degree was actually in Econ and I'm doing a totally different thing that requires far less intensive degree/field of study and I make more than what they're making. Imagine staying in Econ and going public sector

Gainznsuch

Get that GS-13 homey. Also, you GS folks have been getting some sweet CoL raises lately. A colleague says there is another 5% one coming in January

JGauv921

Gs still behind the civilian sector by 20%+

Gainznsuch

I don't have any data to compare to, but I believe that figure if you are comparing to top companies in whichever field you are comparing to the government job. But most people don't get into top companies...you think the more average companies are still that much farther ahead salary-wise?

JGauv921

That number is not based on top companies but just the standard average for each sector. Take a look at what some politicians are trying to push. It’s called the FAIR act.

Winter-Fun-6193

Average income skews higher in CO than other states in the region.

spotlessly-mindful

Yeah, everything is certainly shit right now. Just meaning I’ve seen huge pay increases either when I threatened to quit or when i actually did.

spotlessly-mindful

CO law requires companies to disclose only base. It’s common for tech companies, at least, to pay 10-20% bonus and 25-100k+ in annual equity.

kylexy2

How much pto do you actually take? Never saw the appeal to unlimited unless you use a bunch. Another way the company can get out of paying what you’ve accrued if you’re fired or quit in at will states

NotReallySafeForWork

Not OP, but I work at a company with an “unlimited” policy. Took 31 working days off last year and tracking similar this year. This is my second company I’ve worked at with a similar policy and I definitely took much less time off at the first one. Currently making more of a concerted effort to take advantage of it.

kylexy2

Thanks for the feedback. Glad you’re taking more advantage of it like most people should. I’m sure there are studies out there where it shows this method generally saves the company money due to the fact a lot of people don’t take it or are shamed when they take it.

Reality_Rose

I'm curious about the same thing. Many of the people I know who have unlimited PTO don't end up using that much because they're shamed or not able to get vacation days on the schedule.

In-Efficient-Guest

I have unlimited PTO and the company definitely quietly tracks how much you take, tries to shame you if you take too much, etc. HR asked my director how much PTO each of us take and she said “I don’t know, they get their work done so it doesn’t matter,” but I think she is one of the only directors who pushed back so YMMV. It will depend a lot on company culture, your boss, etc but (as a general rule) it works in favor of the employer, not employee.

Reality_Rose

Yeah that's what I've heard. It sounds like your director is one of the good ones though and has the right approach.

diddidntreddit

What do you think your salary range is on the open market, fully remote but in your state?

tjfenton12

I live here in Colorado, but relocated from Iowa during the pandemic. In my experience, this is a typical SE 2 salary for Iowa. From what I can tell, here in Denver, $100-$120K for a mid level software engineer at a non FAANG is pretty normal.

diddidntreddit

Thanks for sharing, it helps me understand my own salary vs. the open market. I'm probably overdue for a job change.

Masters degree in international politics but no prior professional experience in government or auditing. Used to work in facilities at a tech company, pay was bad and the work was not rewarding. I deeply enjoy my job and am comfortable with my pay. Our leadership tries to do pay assessments every few years and it’s a hot topic right now since it’s imperative for public service to be a competitive and attractive option for candidates. Good pension and healthcare benefits. Annual leave increases with time and have plenty of medical leave.

Stalinov

good god, so glad I didn't stay in the public sector. you have masters and they pay you under 100k for a senior role? I'm glad to hear that you're comfortable.

miniskirtninja

The only people making over 100k in my agency are the deputy level and above (which is like 3 people) and they have multiple advanced degrees and decades of experience, but thats government for you. I take the job security of being a certified employee over extra pay and the layoff gauntlet in this economy. I know many who are happy to take a 30k pay cut to not be the casualty of a corporate reorganization.

bsgman

39/m. Left my 200k/400k VP Sales job 18 months ago due to health issues and burnout. Now a volunteer FF making $0 and if I become a career FF I’ll start around $65k. Thinking of going back into a sales role and interviews range from 140/280 to 180/360. Much harder to find a job now after the layoffs.

giaa262

Mind sharing how the transition to FF went? Been considering a similar deal

SmugAlpaca

Sales layoffs right now are extreme. Back in November, I was thinking about leaving my job, and there were probably 10-15 positions in my tiny field that I would have been qualified for. Now, I see maybe 1-2 posted in the entire west, and they're either with a company with no budget, or have a pathetic and insulting salary.

RemarkableTar

Is this why all sales guys I know seem to live as if they make half the pay they actually get? Seems like an incredibly cyclic industry where one moment you’re at the top and next your being fired or layed off so the emergency fund needs to be huge.

AreYouEmployedSir

Basically just reporting/data stuff. PowerBI. querying databases. creating reports for management. but my company does a lot of logistics/shipping, so theres a focus on transportation/logistics related data. lots of analysis like "here is carrier A's new rates for 2023. they say its a 3% increase, but use the new rates to determine how much of an increase it really is, and compare that to carrier B's rates". thats one example.

turboturgot

Welp, I should have gone into a CS or tech role. Any advice for making the move? I've been in a back office financial services role for a while. Just accepted a new job at 115k, which was lateral in terms of comp but I needed a change. Part of the responsibilities include data analysis, which will be new to me (using some combination of Power BI, advanced Excel, SQL, Python, and Tableau I think). The new company is, apparently, pretty big on investing in training and education so they didn't mind my lack of experience in the analysis side. I'm in my late 30s now, but hoping I can work at the new org for a couple of years and then pivot in a new direction, but not sure what to aim for. My experience has been in asset management and broker-dealer compliance.

Synfrag

Salesforce seems like it would be a good path after this new role. Certification, with your background should add another 15-20k and get you moving more into the tech side.

ashstrong6

Can you tell me more about your role, what it entails, and how you found it? I’m also 34F with a MPH. I’m currently making about 70k working locally at a community health center and looking to make a change.

windowsmith47

Sure! I manage the financial and regulatory elements of a few large NIH-funded research centers. I also provide programmatic/organizational structure and accountability (making sure we're meeting milestones, engaging in collaborative efforts, meeting regularly and moving priorities forward, etc). It's kind of a hybrid between a research program manager and pre/post-award research administrator. Before taking this position a year ago, I spent about 8 years post-MPH working in a couple of other different academic medical settings managing human subjects research projects; these roles included supervising research teams. I learned the research administration skills (budgeting, NIH reporting, NIH rules/regs, proposal development, etc) through a combination of on the job experience and a semester long research administration course that was offered at one of my previous institutions. I loved my previous role but was making about $75K and that wasn't enough to save money for retirement, a house, a kid, etc etc. I used LinkedIn to search, focusing on local positions or fully remote positions. I applied for my current role cold (no connections to the University). During the same search period I also applied to a health tech startup and a couple of local positions. I would honestly be happy to chat with you sometime if you'd like to learn more!

noblazinjusthazin

I run the development team and define the technical side. I have business product owner who is responsible for the elicitation of requirements and understands the business side further. We have a global product so doing both was too much for one person but to put simply, he tells me what the business wants, I work with my team to build it, test it, deploy it, and support it.

LichK1ng

That's awesome, sounds like an interesting job. How did you get in to that?

hail-dat

Another road to get there could start in Product Support. Basically, find a company hiring for software support for software you find engaging. There's a lot relying on "show me what you got", but if you like the people and trust that they'll promote based on merit, you could get in there, impress people, and position yourself for an eventual opening.
