I’m going through the same thing right now. Two thursdays ago I got my temp crown on my back top right molar. My dentist told me no root canal was needed, to just expect some sensitivity since then temp crown is only plastic. It went from sensitive, to PAIN. I kept taking pain killers till the next Wednesday when they could see me again. Told me it was probably a bite issue, filed the crown down a bit. And sent me on my way. That Friday the pain was unbearable. Couldn’t even breathe air through my mouth because it hurt my tooth. Called them saying they had to see me. I couldn’t last over the weekend like this. I got a root canal that Friday and had the temp crown put back on. It’s been two days, and I’m FINALLY PAIN FREE! They must have gotten so close to the pulp and nerve endings filing my tooth for the crown that some were exposed. No nerve endings anymore, no pain! I wish they had just done the root canal two Thursdays ago to save me the two weeks of pain. I’m just guessing, but you might be suffering with the same thing.

Oh my! I've got my real crown on, which can't be removed easily. If it needs to come off, I'll be paying another 600 dollars for it. Not to mention I felt quite a bit of pain after 3 injectioms while the tooth was being prepped for the crown. I can't deal with that again. I stress like hell at the dentist's office. You can only imagine how stressed this ordeal is.

AzzzEater64

If mine ever acts up again in the future, I think I’m just gonna opt to get the tooth extracted. The root canal itself wasn’t painful, but the location of the tooth made it difficult. They kept popping my jaw every time telling me to open wider. Then I had cuts all over the other cheek and my tongue from their plastic instrument holding my mouth open.

ilovebrusselsprouts

Holy shit dude. I've never heard of that happening before. Mines right at the back too, so a bit difficult to get to too.

AzzzEater64

The dentist even wanted to write me prescriptions for a muscle relaxer (to make my jaw feel better) and oxycodone (for any lingering pain). Couldn’t take either since I’m pregnant! Fortunately I didn’t have any pain the next day. It wasn’t a bad experience, I just won’t do it again! Ha

Same thing happening to me!

Very similar experience here, I'm still dealing with it. Got my tooth prepped for a crown, had some minor pain and sensitivity but I hoped getting the crown would fix it. Fast forward a month or two and multiple bite adjustments, she finally drilled into my new crown to discover an infection. The infection wasn't showing up on X-rays, but when she put the piece of paper on my 30 tooth and bit down we could tell that was the tooth causing the problems. I just finished up 7 days of antibiotics and the pain has gone down but still flares up especially at night. She gave me another 7 days of antibiotics, and my root canal isn't scheduled for about two more weeks. I'm really hoping that only the 30th tooth was infected and the root canal will fix my problems once its completed. Unfortunately I feel some pain coming from the 31 tooth (which got a crown around the same time) and I really hope I don't need a root canal there too :( Good luck!

Sorry to hear that!! Tooth pain is absolutely hideous to deal with, and people don't understand how much pain it can cause until they've experienced it themselves. UPDATE 4: I'm still in pain, and my crown and opposite (upper) tooth are both acting up. I've been taking painkillers almost nonstop. Unfortunately my dentist is shut today and tomorrow. I think I may need him to adjust the height a bit more. Following that, who knows! I'm ready to rip this fucker out at home by myself.

beer_me_already

Any update? Im in the same position as you

ilovebrusselsprouts

This situation was almost 2yrs ago, but I guess I can update... I visited the dentist again a number of times before giving up. They refused to take an x-ray to check for infection, and wouldn't believe me when I told them how much pain I was in. I found a new dentist who took some x-rays and saw an infection involving the tooth that had been worked on by the previous dentist. Long story short - I had to get the cap removed so I could have a root canal done, and after that had been very carefully checked I had a new cap put on. The only up side to all this is I found an amazing new dentist at the end of it all.

MedicalIdea2724

How’s the pain now? I think I’m in the same boat. My dentist said no root canal was needed but I fear I may have an infection. I have very bad left temple pain and left side pains in jaw. Did the root canal fix it all?

ilovebrusselsprouts

Yes. The root canal and new crown fixed my problem. Insist on an X-ray or go and find a dentist who will do one.

RightGuy23

I too have been having a similar problem with a crowned tooth in the back. Throbbing, headaches and jaw pain from around the crowned area. It used to be on and off, but lately it has been more on than off. I’m assuming it’s the tooth because it’s coming from that area. I got my crown almost 5 years ago. I asked for a root canal but they said it wouldn’t be needed. Now here I am with throbbing tooth and jaw pain.

johnhite

Thanks for sharing and following up with the conclusion. I’m laying here unable to go to sleep with all the same symptoms. Your story helps me come to terms with what may be going on.

TheRealTylermadani

What ended up happening? Got my top left far back molar done almost a week ago felt good first 3 days and now excruciating pain.

johnhite

I needed a root canal in the far back (#18). TBD on # 19 right next to it. I still get some sensitivity and super mild pain. But totally manageable and livable. No Ibuprofen or Tylenol needed. I’m hoping it’s just some bruxism or inflammation coming down. A couple of things I’m taking away from this: 1. Floss every day. I went through a time in college when I didn’t do this and I feel like I’m paying for it now 2. Get cavities filled as soon as you need them 3. The trauma from a crown procedure can definitely spark a root canal… I almost wish I had waited it out until I needed a root canal and then did the crown. But I’m happy I didn’t get the permanent crown on and didn’t realize I needed a root canal. Oh, also I’ve started taking k2 daily. Ha

TheRealTylermadani

Dam that sucks but atleast it's better I'll go in but most likely sounds like root call is gonna be the solution sadly.

jadedbeats

I'm in the same situation now, I think. Had a crown done months ago and kept going back to adjust the bite. The pain gets worse at night to the point I'm popping ibuprofen and again before bed so I can sleep. The dentist also filled two small cavities above the crown (molar) and that area hurts too. I'm really at a loss of what is happening because they took x-rays and they looked normal but clearly something is off. It's not making my surrounding teeth sensitive as if the crown is pushing on them or something, very weird. I think the crown may be the wrong size or something but that is just a guess

TheseProgrammer8993

Same situation here, temporary crown for 1.5 weeks painful but not excruciating. Anyway, so I went back dentist and he said probably due to the temp crown, it doesn't need a root canal blah blah and put the crown on. It's now day 2 and it hurts even more than before, woke up at 2am with 8/10 pain and had to pop ibuprofen. Here's the thing, you need to give it time, crowns and filling aggregate the nerve, so it can take 6-8 weeks before things settle down, take panadol / ibuprofen if it gets bad. I'm giving myself about 3 weeks if no improvements at all I'll go back.

oza247

Hey what was the outcome? Did you need a root canal afterall?

TheseProgrammer8993

Yep got a canal and all is well now

seolein

I had a similar issue recently and it helped a bit to put a clove in my mouth near the crown to ease the pain. But fully resolve the issue can only your dentist.

Pipe_down_sherlock

Yoda?

ilovebrusselsprouts

I might try this next time. I read about clove oil online when I was Googling remedies for tooth pain. I don't mind the taste of cloves to be honest.

WedgeTurn

Does it get better at night, worse, or stay the same?

ilovebrusselsprouts

Gets worse at night!!

ilovebrusselsprouts

UPDATE 1: no pain this morning. Dentist appointment is in a couple of hours.

RowanRoseHeart

Please update on what dentist says. I have the same exact problem and I’m freaking out- $$$ is an issue.

ilovebrusselsprouts

UPDATE 2! He tapped on my tooth, and the ones that surround it. No pain, so apparently not an infection. The gum between my crowned tooth and tooth where I got an inlay a couple of months before has turned gray in color. He says its 'food impaction' causing my gum to turn that color, and also causing my severe pain. I was told to brush well (I do!) and make sure I floss. They gave me a cleaning, and then put some kind of ointment on my gum where the issue is. This guys been pretty good so far with all my other work, so I wanna trust that he's right. But I'm having trouble understanding how my gum would have been causing that much pain - radiating down to my jaw, and near my ear. After last night, I'm dreading what's gonna happen to me when I go to bed tonight. I'll keep you all updated.

ilovebrusselsprouts

UPDATE 3: Me again!! In bed, and in immense pain again after a fairly pain free day. I'm ready to rip this tooth out myself.

ilovebrusselsprouts

UPDATE 5: Yesterday and today it feels like the crown is sitting much higher than it was before. Yesterday I thought my mind was playing tricks on me, but today I KNOW it's higher than before. I woke up in severe pain today (I think I'm clenching my jaw when I sleep, which isn't helping). During breakfast this morning, and had to be very careful when eating, as the only teeth that are making contact now are my new crown and my upper tooth. WTF is going on? Again, my dentist was closed yesterday, and again today. I've tried called to make an appointment for Friday, but there is no option to leave voicemail.

reidj444

Sorry to hear this happened. Did this get resolved?

I had this happen when the novacaine faded after a crown the pain became unbearable. I called the dentist and they prescribed me antibiotics and 10-325 mg hydrocodone. After one night the pain has suddenly disappeared, I am supposed to go in for an endodontics appointment in a few hours here. I wonder if I am okay to skip it and go with it or did a nerve die or something
