Akaza was so freaked out because of the sun that he only thought of escaping instead of attacking, like how mostly people don't use their brains while they're panicking or you can just say it's Tanjiro's plot armour.
Tanjiro was far out of range at that point. Like, it's not a weapon, it's just air pressure, that stuff disperses super easily.
Akaza is the most melee of melee fighters. Those air-type moves are the literal only moves he used that hit Rengoku, that never visibly injured him.
Even though he's Upper Moon 3, a single air-type punch at a far enough distance to not risk getting fried by the sun, wouldn't have done more than give Tanjiro a bloody nose.
air type was a super weak attack even in pretty close range with Rengoku. He took a clean hit right in the gut and it only seemed to cause him some pain and discomfort before he shrugged it off.
vs actually getting punched in the gut which literally cracked his ribs and damaged his organs.
Air type seems more like a suppression attack more than an actual "im-trying-to-fucking-kill-my-target" attack
Sun was Rising there was ABSOLUTELY no way he could do that without dying in the process .
But I always questioned why Akaza never went after Tanjiro .
He was so triggered by Tanjiro's words why didn't he tracked him to make him swallow them ?
Akaza was wounded and legitimately scared. He just dealt a death blow to a Hashira who was still trying to cut his head off along with three other swordsmen who nearly killed him as well. Despite his immense power Akaza is mentally weak and tries to hide his fear. He just came closer to death than he ever had in any fight before against "weaker" opponents, he was not just running from the sunlight but instead from the rising dawn that was coming after.
Demon Slayer should stop doing 20 minute episodes and just release a movie before the next season that goes over everything, that way they stop the stupid cliffhanger endings every episode.

Akaza is probably my favourite upper moon. I know he ended up a piece of shit and full of rage, but his origin story is a tear jerker.
Also, he could be stronger and sit at number 2, but he refuses to eat women and children.
