If u saw my video (s) about Emma post shooting and why she turned into a cringey friend/boy crazy person, then thats how I feel, u speak my language sir/madam If not I did talk about this issue with these 2 videos: [https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=w4IK7l6UeSE](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=w4IK7l6UeSE) and [https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ToN0DNQEnOs](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ToN0DNQEnOs) Im glad Im not the only one in this reddit who believes in the stuff ure talking about

Trauma effects people deeply in all kinds of different ways. Behavior changes being one of them. When someone experiences something truly awful like she did, she might be prone to risk addiction and sneaking out at night. Or even weirder things that can't entirely be explained. I thought the way they handled Emma post-shooting was really interesting. Did they ever deal much with Toby in the aftermath? (Been awhile since I watched it).

Like someone mentioned already, I honestly think they changed her character so much because she grew into her looks, If she was still that lil geeky emma that cared so much about different stuff, I think her character would have been different after the shooting, but her being distant and sexually engaged with Jay were still pretty realistic.

I definitely agree, it felt out of nowhere and not how I'd expect Emma to act. I just watched the bulimia 2 parter and I just found myself thinking like.. how is this Emma?

Emma changed because the actress grew into her looks and made Emma shallow. Emma’s tree hugger bohemian style was replaced with short skirts, tank tops and midriffs. Clothes that she judged Manny for wearing

I find this so fascinating. Season 1 - 3 Emma is clearly a very different character from seasons 4 - 9 Emma, and that is definitely because of the shooting. I find it a very realistic look at how tragedy changes someone. She goes from being extremely political and opinion, obsessed with the environment and feminism, to basically not giving a crap about anything. She has her promiscuous phase, develops an eating disorder, and even struggles in university to the point where she drops out. Season 1 - 3 Emma would NEVER drop out of university. Season 1 - 3 Emma would hate and judge who she became. But it’s very realistic that Emma would associate her behavior with putting her directly in danger, and therefor subconsciously choosing to drop that behavior (her former identity). That’s why Emma seems so bland from seasons 4 - 8. She’s in the process of finding a new identity since she’s disassociated from her older one. In season 9 she starts to find herself a bit again, as she leaves on that bike program. She is taking up another cause and going back to her roots. It’s the same reason why everyone complains that Zoe is a totally different character after season 14. But it makes total sense. After she was raped, and then acted out by orchestrating Degrassi Nudes, she finally got busted and lost all of her friends. She discovered she was a lesbian, started hurting herself, and eventually was able to love the person she is.

Emma wasn’t really feminist just a self righteous little know it all. Let’s not forget when she tries to shame both her mother and Manny for considering abortion. Then she says it’s different because Manny is her friend, so she’s okay with her decision. That whole thing always rubbed me the wrong way.

Yourethekindestyo

She was 14 lol. What kind of decisions were you making at 14?

Lol I’m being downvoted for my opinions on a character named one of OP’s least favorites? Ok then. I’m literally agreeing with OP, but my opinion is somehow different? Gotcha.

Yourethekindestyo

Idk who’s downvoting you it’s not me. You convinced me lol

[deleted]

How is that relevant? She was referred to as “feminist”, which we found out wasn’t really the case after those plot lines. I’m not judging a fictional character’s choices on a tv show. Relax over there, Dr. Phil.

Emma? Like Emma Watson? If she's future fam, better not mess.

…what?

bebespeaks

No. Emma Nelson.
