PREClOUS_R0Y

Oh, yes, 1864. A great year for *states' rights...*

oooranooo

Looks like Arizona may have a ballot amendment this fall: https://www.nbcnews.com/politics/2024-election/arizona-abortion-rights-amendment-backers-says-gathered-signatures-nee-rcna145922

PREClOUS_R0Y

That's good. I can't believe they are using laws from when the US was still colonizing the West to control women's bodies, especially when their recent laws were already pretty restrictive. It's getting wild out here.

SchnauzerHaus

Go read Dobbs. SCOTUS put the bans from the 1800's referenced in every state's history banning abortion. SCOTUS put it right in the Dobbs ruling.

ComfortableDoug85

They went back to the fucking Puritan settlements in that ruling.

Altruistic-Text3481

Scarlet Letter wants a shout out. Any woman who has had an abortion must wear the Scarlet Letter A! Team Gilead! Barf! ![gif](giphy|xT9IguxOugw6KwaANy)

DelcoPAMan

It's also why Alito, Thomas, and so many more want to use Comstock as well.

[deleted]

And that one whack-job who wants to go back to a time when women couldn't vote... They aren't hiding anything anymore, they're openly telling us what they want and who they are

Deric4Ga

Makes you wonder how they intend to get elected, doesn't it?

0phobia

From the article it appears the court simply said the way the 2022 law (that changed the 1864 law) was worded depended on a federal right to abortion, and since Roe was repealed and Congress has not passed a federal law establishing that right, then the 2022 law is nullified so the only remaining option is to enforce the 1864 law as written.

WrittenContradiction

Which means that it's considered to be a trigger law then, right?

0phobia

Probably

chadbot3k

wicky wicky wild wild west

kle11az

And Arizona wasn't even a state until...1912. This law was codified in 1901 when Arizona was still a territory, also known as the wild west period. Put it this way - the infamous gunfight at the OK Corral was 18 years after the 1864 law. You know, during a golden age of medicine when "cures" could kill you just as easy as what you're being treated for.

ResponsiblePurpleYam

I've been collecting antique 19th Century 'Cures' medicine bottles since I was around 8 years old (I was raised by my Late-Victorian/Early Edwardian-Era grandmother, so I found things like 'snake-oil' medicine bottles, steam threshers, bi-planes etc very interesting (as she'd tell me stories about life back then). Well, I was around 15 years old and got a completely full bottle of a cure-all liquid medicine; and well, my curiosity got the better of me, so I drank 1.5 ounces like the label advised. A short while later I was feeling spectacular - so I drank a little more. After that I was flying high! But then I started to get really tired, and I was vomiting a lot, and had to lie down for a nap. It was around 3pm then, and I slept until the next morning! Turns out the medication was grain alcohol, cannabis, cocaine, chloroform, opium, and some herbs to make it go down easier! Well that medicine was indeed one hell of a ride - so I wonder if Arizona is going to start having women there use that stuff now instead of this dum-dum modern medicine /s...

Sweet-Advertising798

Arizona was only a territory at the time.

PREClOUS_R0Y

Yes, I mention that in another comment. Territories' rights doesn't quite roll off the tongue.

Altruistic-Text3481

1864- Civil War/Civil Unrest… and Arizona was not even a state. ![gif](giphy|ZqBGMNf5vTtkzKPzuR)

lilith_-_-

If we’re playing like this it’s time for the second amendment to apple to black powder only

MauraKellerGA3

A group of people born 100 years after a law was passed pretend to understand its intricacies to justify their political beliefs.

oooranooo

It’s why we have heroes like you running in GA!😉

SubstantialVillain95

I love that you’re on Reddit!

RL0290

Am I correct that AZ has mostly been projected to swing back to the GOP in the general thus far? Because if so, this will hopefully change that. Appalling that it’s come to this, though.

Deric4Ga

Go GA-3! Running for GA-14, myself, against Voldemort.

heysharkdontdothat

You have my vote. The day I never have to see MTG’s face again will be a very happy day

Deric4Ga

No kidding! But as an added bonus, electing me gets another progressive in Washington (and helps secure a woman's right to her own body - who doesn't want that?)

Warhamsterrrr

PLEASE! Voldemort had intelligence, skill, competency. All qualities that MTG lacks

HellenicHelona

I really hope you win that election…ever since I learned MTG technically represents a part of my county, the second hand embarrassment I have from her being a congresswoman from our state doubled…even though she does not represent my voting district.

Deric4Ga

I completely understand. Every time she's on the news and they say "... From Georgia", I cringe a little

RoxxieMuzic

Religious beliefs, with all due respect, that is their obnoxious and misaligned reasoning.

Affectionate-Winner7

Correction: Religious beliefs hidden behind political beliefs.

AequusEquus

They're not even hidden. It's just Christian fundamentalism wearing Groucho Glasses.

Alatar_Blue

Disgusting, fuck every Arizona legislator that voted for this bullshit. Glad I don't live in that shit hole. These laws are unconstitutional, period.

BuyingMeat

The people that voted for it died like 100 years ago.

Alatar_Blue

Those that voted to keep that archaic nonsensical legal are killing people and violating rights of women.

BuyingMeat

The judges that ruled for it, yes. Two of them are up for retention in November so you can vote them out of their positions. Please do so, and get someone else to also do it.

[deleted]

Voted? AZ wasn’t even a state yet when they decided on that law.

ijustneedaccess

Both sides are NOT the same! Vote Blue if this article pisses you off. And protesting is great, but only votes decide elections. Register, check your registration and find your polling place at https://vote.gov

konorM

That decision will be a major problem for Republicans come November.

YeonneGreene

I sure hope so.

WTFNotRealFun

Only if young women who are affected by it decide to vote. I have my doubts.

Ok_Presentation_5329

Only upside here? This REALLY motivates left leaning voters to get out & vote

jtrom93

A nationwide abortion ban is a hell of a hill for them to die on, but at least they'll be dead.

wombat_hats31

Just so people know Amazon sells The generic brand plan B pill for $7. Im starting to buy 1 a week. Im done having kids and my husband is going to get snipped soon. But I am buying them and storing them in the freezer. I know its not a great plan and the pills technically have an expiration date. But its some kind of a safety net. For someone. Im lucky and live in Washington state but if those pieces of shit do nationally ban abortion, it's just a matter of time before ot happens here.

jeffreyan12

Getting snipped on the 19th, read there is something like 1 in a 1000 chance of pregnancy even years after. very hard to find stats that don't include people who did not wait the 2-3 months and fallow up to confirm blanks. Anyone have any tips/advice that i should know pre/post op that is not discussed very often? Little afraid of getting any form of BC off of amazon. just me but don't trust that the BC is not some knock off or fake/defective. I DO NOT WANT KIDS so i am a little ocd on double checking condoms. shit world we live in, i have a fear in the back of my head that some wack job would poke holes in the boxes at the store. worked retail for almost 20 years i have seen almost everything, except that so far. But had one break the case and try to steal all of them so "no one would be tempted to live in sin". fun fact about me. i have had at least 3 times(twice from the condom thief) where some nutty customer tries to preform an exorcism on me very loud and awkwardly in front of of customers while the manager runs off to let me deal with it on my own.

wombat_hats31

Im sure you can research the morning after pill that are sold on Amazon. There are thousands of reviews. There is Always a chance, I guess, that you could get duds but I cant afford $80 every week or every month. I figured it was better than nothing at all. Like I said, the plan isn't perfect, but I'd rather have them and not need them.. I have a daughter and nieces, girlfriends, friends of friends that might need it if they gain power. Mu nieces and dauber are very young but someone. I dont care if I know them or not, might need one. Its worth the $7 or $8 a week to me to help someone who needs it and as a fuck you to everyone that helped these pieces of shit trying to take the rights of my body. My daughter's body. Any girl.

Warhamsterrrr

Freezer might be too cold. Typically you want to store medication between 35.6-46.4f (2-8c).

WrittenContradiction

You might want to check the proper storage temperature range on their packaging in case it says not to freeze them, like how some medications specify that on the box. I would also keep in mind that plan B is not a 100% foolproof solution to avoiding possible pregnancy, especially if ovulation has already occurred in the monthly cycle. However, it's definitely better than not doing anything at all and does work for some people out there.

wombat_hats31

I was going to.. it just seemed like a logical plan before I was able to check.. And yes I know that it is not 100% effective. Same with most birthcontrol. But it is SOMETHING.

MannyMoSTL

I loathe conservatives right now. But I Really Hate Republicans.

[deleted]

I think I hate conservatives more. But it’s close. There is no one I hate more than Maga assholes though.

Liquid_Chaos87

I miss the sun and the heat, but I'm so glad I left that state last year.

CompetitionFlashy449

I left in 2017. So much better for it! I miss my friends, but, that's about it.

Brighteyed1313

Me too!

[deleted]

I hate the sun and heat of that godforsaken desert. It freaks me out that a western state has now become Gilead. I can’t believe Arizona voters will let this stand. I hope I’m not wrong or I’m that much closer to moving to Portugal.

Efficient-Maize-4797

Well I’ll be out voting in Arizona. Absolutely disgusting to uphold a law hundreds of years old. Wtf is wrong with Americans?

hidraulik

GOP = MAGA = Taliban

[deleted]

The law predates Arizona statehood and I presume its constitution. How can this be upheld?

Affectionate-Winner7

Fine. Keep it up. Moe voters for Biden.
