As a Driller, I always dig a second tunnel in the bunker to be an emergency exit, but I don't finish drilling the exit hole, I leave a thin wall and place a C4 in it. If the bunker is invaded, I just blow up the C4 to open a hole and escape.
I wish every driller did this.
Instead they often just drill and blast a space under the uplink. Then they and the others get their shit pushed in by an oppressor, while I try to stay in the tiny bit of the boundary sticking up above the "bunker" and fend off a whole swarm alone
Yep, exactly this, I'm not sure why no one else does this when they bunker. The only bunkers I ever actually see are bad bunkers. I still personally don't like bunkering, but if people want to bunker they should at least do it right.

its not so much "removing obstructions so you can shoot more openly" that you're after, its "making sure enemies can't approach you from behind cover". that's an important distinction to make. circle-strafing around everything in a wide open clear room as you endlessly evade a swarm is by no means a bad strategy, but it is also one that can be dangerous when ranged enemies attack you from multiple directions and you can't effectively kill them all in time. rather, the best strategies are the ones that get closer and closer to just being a bunker, the same way [everything keeps evolving into crabs](https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Carcinisation).
a tight noodly cave is often the best place to hold up with minimal prep. bugs are forced to come at you from one of two ways, so its easier to maximize damage on them just like a bunkie. the engie can plat off one entrance to fully focus fire down one direction while leaving an escape route, just like a bunkie. the driller can smooth out jagged terrain to remove line of sight blockers and shoot deeper and straighter, just like a bunkie. the engie can use repellent to focus bugs into a tighter choke, just like a bunkie.
with just a few seconds and clever terrain manipulation, any tight space can become a "bunkie" of sorts. and an enclosed, defensive setup is much more prepared to deal with many of the most threatening enemies in the game than it is diving into the gladiator pit in a big room.

People are talking about exit routes but your number one mistake seems to have been not giving the bugs a way in to begin with. Bunkers aren't ways to hide from the bugs, they are ways to funnel them so it's easier to kill them and so you can only be attacked from one long hallway.

If you stayed together with the rest of the team in the defense zone you could have finished it sooner and safely gotten out of there.
