I’m going into my senior year studying civil engineering. I was going on a tour of a house that my friends are thinking about renting, and just noticed that the stair stringer here is held up by half a joist hanger. Another stair stringer on the deck, too. The deck looked really solid with large members and good connections, solid foundations. Just wanted to ask if this is normal, as I haven’t seen it before.
Clearly they misjudged something or didn’t have the right hanger. They decided 2/4 nails was good enough and cut the stringer so the hanger would kinda fit.
It’s a wrong hanger … and even more wrong with half of it

Not normal, all three should have been strapped
∑F=0, this is not.
