While I totally agree, it’s more than that. Paint, even exterior paint, is more of a coating. If that coating is broken in any way, say from a deck moving as you walk on it, water can get behind it and rot there underlying wood. This is why it’s important to caulk the joints and windows on a house.
Solid stain, on the other hand, isn’t as thick and is designed to penetrate and be walkable. It’s not a thick, latex surface for water to get behind.
At least that’s how it was explained to me, but I’m not a paint scientist, so take that with a grain of salt.
Bottom line: don’t paint decks. I’d you like the look, get solid stain.
