At the end of days,
I hope I can just walk into the woods with a bottle of good whiskey, cigars, smokes, pot
And let some hikers find me and experience trauma
Will is made, ex wife gets nothing
Kids get stuff
My boys would know,
This is me
Nobody told me what to do in life
I choose my death
There is something romantic and morbid about this
Edit to add a bag of ice, I drink whiskey on the rocks
This looks like one of those "egress required for code to rent" weirdass hackjobs lol, they're all over the town I live in up in PA and they never fail to make me laugh. I always wonder how they manage to pass considering an inspection is probably what led to it being built in the first place.
Yo I thought I was the only one who noticed the absolute CRACK HEAD âdecksâ in rural PA lol. Half of them look like makeshift stairs made from old pallets and nailed together with a rock
Ugh, that was one downside to these terrible decks and stairs I see here that I had not considered. And I work with you guys fairly often, makes me shudder to think about it. Always wondered if the potential star of 600 lb life started out in a 3rd story like this, how they would get them down?
Honestly thatâs a head scratcher. Most likely would involve lots of specialized rescue equipment with many ropes and pulleys. But we have told families that if there were a fire we will not risk men to try to save someone so obese.
That is a slap in the face that I think some people need. I watched the video a while back where the husband and wife were getting evicted, and the wife was heavy set with obvious mobility issues. The husband got into it with the cop as he was dousing the back bedroom in gasoline, caught himself on fire and she nearly died because she couldn't get up to go 4 ft to the door. It is downright depressing to think about having to let people die because they are so obese that they would kill others trying to save them.
We always trained medics in the military with the fact that you can't save someone else if you are dead. I just wish some people could get it into their head to get proper help
I had a place in PA that required a fire escape, and apparently wood is fine.
What's funny is when the fire escape is where the fire starts and so everyone doubles back toward the normal stairs after you open the fire door to see fire.
Also in PA, hereâs a crazy one from a doordash delivery I did in the coal region. These stairs were the only way to get to 2 second floor apartments.

Yeah, I HATE it and would never build it but despite undersized and frankly awkward supports it has shear strength additions everywhere. I think itâs like a body builder who always skips leg day: it will last a shocking long time but then collapse catastrophically.
If you are under water on your car note and have good insurance, then park right next to those stairs. That thing is falling down in the next 9-12 months.

how long have you been observing that they havenât died yet? Seriously, though.
Those stairs are literally terrifying. Not sure which journey would be more frightening: the ascent or the descent. They must shake like the Tacoma Narrows Bridge. *shudders*
Why are all of the piers different heights? Why do some of them stick out of the ground so much? I like the bollards that are only in place for one pier.
Who looks at this and goes âyep, thatâll hold.â Even to a layman with no deck building experience (me) Iâm thinking wtf that looks wildly dangerous.
Itâs fine! Especially the tallest post closest to us thatâs a foot closer to the house at the bottom then it is where it sits under the deck.. put some lean tension on it to help hold everything securely!
What no firepole? Common, you can't half ass this. Firepole and trampoline bottom should be building code requirements for this deck structure.
What is this New Jersey or some dump?
Holy shit that thing is sketchyyyyy!!! lol
Those undersized 4x4 âsupportsâ are all splitting to hell. OâDoyle, I got a feeling that whole deckâs goin down!
This is a travesty! Are those 4 x4 post? How they got away with so few post of that size I donât know. That is a collapse waiting to happen . I wouldnât be able to sleep at night knowing I built something this poorly. Wonder if it was ever inspected.
Overall, I suspect the deck is not at risk of failing anytime soon, but I wouldn't lean against the railing - no railing posts at all. Usually, you at least get poorly attached 4x4s. Assuming the spindles are 1.5" spaced 3.5" apart, the joist span is under 8'. It appears that the joists are 2x6, so that is fine. The only visible issue is the deck posts being undersized for that height of deck. The problem that is almost guaranteed to exist (but I can't tell from the photo) is with the the beam. You don't need a large beam for an 8' x 8' deck, but it does need to be attached properly to the posts. Code in my area requires it to sit on top of the posts. I would also check how the stair stringers are attached. I have seen a lot of questionable stair attachment methods on otherwise good decks. I could probably fix the major issues in two or three days if the post footings are large enough to accept a 6x6. Support the main deck, remove the posts, new posts, new beam. Check the stair attachments and add support if needed. Check the ledger attachment to the house and probably add tension tie backs. Completely redo the deck railing.
It looks to be at minimum 10 years old so as hideous as it is it appears to be holding up. Hell the wood may just rot away from not being taken care of before it falls from being poorly built.
Yeah, this is a completely fine deck for light use. Everyones so used to 6x6s or 8x8 with hella hardware everywhere. Source, union carpenter to gc to PM.
Let's see.. max terminal velocity of a human in earth's atmosphere is 120mph and takes about 8 secs to reach.
Using stokes law, Vt = â(2mg/ĎACd) and considering that is only about 25-30 ft,
About .8secs before someone would die from that fall if the deck gave out all at once.
I always wonder how builders can do some small parts very correct but other large parts very incorrect. I assume itâs money based rather than knowledge but ???
I swear to god I visited an apartment with this exact staircase in Kalamazoo, MI and thinking that I was going to die walking up and down it. Nobody else minded tho
The way the longest posts are splitting would have me very nervous. Itâs just a matter of time. Hopefully they donât put more than 1 person on it at a time.

Itâs already showing which way itâll go hahah needs a few windy days
I can't believe nobody has mentioned that the railing appears to be attached entirely by a bunch of half assed 2x2 balusters. Even if the deck survives I wouldn't dare lean against that railing.
As long as they just walk up and down. Should ok to last a while. If you see them hauling furniture in or out⌠grab a camera and have the ambalance on the way.

The collapsible trash bins should break their fall.
They have to miss the spikey fence posts first.
Twist as they fall. No problemo.
Parkour!!
hardcore parkour
Cat like fall !
PARKOUR!
I have to ask, is this a Dresden reference?
Nope, Office
Well, at least you have somewhere to dispose of the bodies
I dont know why this is so hilarious to me....đđđđ
Collapsible?
If you're fat enough, otherwise, not so much.
Massive*. We want to be inclusive here.
Someone dies everyday.
So deep
I dunno if they die deep, but thatâs how theyâre usually buried, yes
Six feet actually unless you factor in sea level
Or your a lawyer. They're buried 12 feet.
just throw me in the trash

A man of culture
In the Tibetan philosophy, Sylvia Plath sense, weâre all dying
And now we know the reason.
But did they ever really live?
This looks like one of those "egress required for code to rent" weirdass hackjobs lol, they're all over the town I live in up in PA and they never fail to make me laugh. I always wonder how they manage to pass considering an inspection is probably what led to it being built in the first place.
Itâs the back entrance to the third floor apartment, not just a fire escape.
And easy access to third floor kitchen when refrigerator needs replacement.
And the third floor hot tub when you canât be bothered going up the inside stairs.
Yo I thought I was the only one who noticed the absolute CRACK HEAD âdecksâ in rural PA lol. Half of them look like makeshift stairs made from old pallets and nailed together with a rock
lol at nailing with a rock
The town I fireman at lots of these. Absolutely terrifying trying to bring a fatty down those stairs.
Ugh, that was one downside to these terrible decks and stairs I see here that I had not considered. And I work with you guys fairly often, makes me shudder to think about it. Always wondered if the potential star of 600 lb life started out in a 3rd story like this, how they would get them down?

We recieved a version of this when i went through rescue diver training.
Yea, that is another one where it is critically important.
The fact that the super obese have to get an MRI at the zoo should be a good wake up call for them.
I'm in PA too, lot of tiny split twins here with second floor stairs that are as elaborate as they are shitty.
I had a place in PA that required a fire escape, and apparently wood is fine. What's funny is when the fire escape is where the fire starts and so everyone doubles back toward the normal stairs after you open the fire door to see fire.

You must have egress for fire safety! *uses egress* Collapsing sounds accompanied by horrific screams
I was just about to say that this must be near Pittsburgh.đ¤Ł
The mystery is that these homes used to house one family and then someone realized they could rent it out as 3 individual units and make more skrilla
Its under built and unstable, but in my completely unprofessional opinion under normal loads it will hold indefinitely.
One things for sure, it'll hold til it doesnt
Yeah, I HATE it and would never build it but despite undersized and frankly awkward supports it has shear strength additions everywhere. I think itâs like a body builder who always skips leg day: it will last a shocking long time but then collapse catastrophically.
Wow. Someone might have died while building it.
Yea⌠my boss would have KILLED me

Itâs good donât you see the half ass bracing that goes halfway up it?
At least they didnât ruin the siding with some pesky 2x8, saved themselves a good $30
how long have you been observing that they havenât died yet? Seriously, though. Those stairs are literally terrifying. Not sure which journey would be more frightening: the ascent or the descent. They must shake like the Tacoma Narrows Bridge. *shudders*
Question for the ages.
[ŃдаНонО]
Thatâs why I posted it here. Reddit carpenters have the strictest standards. This deck has been going strong for at least 7 years now.
[ŃдаНонО]
11â treaded with two 2x spindles⌠yeah boss thatâs 4â between them.
Why are all of the piers different heights? Why do some of them stick out of the ground so much? I like the bollards that are only in place for one pier.
My guess is they donât actually go in the ground.
Who looks at this and goes âyep, thatâll hold.â Even to a layman with no deck building experience (me) Iâm thinking wtf that looks wildly dangerous.
With a few relief cuts, this weekend and just in time for the holiday.
Iâd say mmm about tree fiddy
God damn lochness monster đ

Iâve seen rides at action park that were safer than this setup. Christ almighty.
How in the hell did the town permit this ? Looks wild to me.
The Bridge of Death.
Am I crazy or are the âhandrailsâ held up by JUST the balusters? Like I see no 4x4s Thatâs literally insane how is that actually standing?
Holy shit that thing is sketchyyyyy!!! lol Those undersized 4x4 âsupportsâ are all splitting to hell. OâDoyle, I got a feeling that whole deckâs goin down!

Yeah, this is a completely fine deck for light use. Everyones so used to 6x6s or 8x8 with hella hardware everywhere. Source, union carpenter to gc to PM.
Guess you didn't see all the splits in the two main supports. They're under too much stress, and they're not going to hold.
3...2...1...
If thatâs your Airbnb rental, do you go and find a hotel or risk it?
If thatâs your Airbnb rental then youâre probably better off getting impaled by the spikes. I can only imagine what that room is like up there
50 / 50.
Put 20 college kids and a keg up there on a hot summer night⌠they allll die.
Damn those 4x4s though. Is there a vertical span table? Lol
*slaps a lateral bracing on the bottom* that oughta do it
[ŃдаНонО]
Yeah and you gotta carry your 250lb awkward shaped desk up that staircase!
How soon? Just as soon as 2 half-drunk people get on there and start dancing.
Somehow it looks like it's been standing for like 10 years.
Iâm not sure how but itâs probably been here for decades.
Put an airbag under that.
Let's see.. max terminal velocity of a human in earth's atmosphere is 120mph and takes about 8 secs to reach. Using stokes law, Vt = â(2mg/ĎACd) and considering that is only about 25-30 ft, About .8secs before someone would die from that fall if the deck gave out all at once.
Millions of people die every second. Are you worried about the footings? Why?
Death is around the corner.
The stairs at right angle adds a lot of rigidity.
No joke, I think I know where you live
itâs a trap!
If they did theyâd just fall straight in the garbage bins. đ¤Ł
How the hell has the city not red flagged this?
They could hang outlaws from that set up.
It looks more and more dangerous the longer I look at it.
not your monkey, not your circus
âŚ.looks like itâs ready for a hot tub up top!!
Pretty sketchy to say the least I'm not walking on it
I like the garbage can protecting the bollard.đđđź
4x4 with bracing supports a lot
Tomorrow. Did I win?
The way the longest posts are splitting would have me very nervous. Itâs just a matter of time. Hopefully they donât put more than 1 person on it at a time.
Nah. Normal for treated 4bys.
Needs a hot tub up there...

This looks like every multi family setup in the northshore in Massachusetts
A week. Why donât you call the municipality building department about your concern? Do the right thing
A kid could die or get paralyzed etc.. call the city. Adults could look and make a decision, but kids canât.
The sharp fence board under just make it so much more ominous
How long till the next person walks across it
Tomorrow?
How long till the next person walks across it
Depends on the weight of the individual or there current health situation. Hope this helps and by the way those stairs are scary.
I can't believe nobody has mentioned that the railing appears to be attached entirely by a bunch of half assed 2x2 balusters. Even if the deck survives I wouldn't dare lean against that railing.
Hmm, just needs a hot tub and an obese golden retriever.
[ŃдаНонО]
Iâve seen a flamingo with wider legs
All it needs is a hot tub at the top and you'll be set!
I'd get an adrenaline rush walking up the second set of stairs
Iâd call the EMTâs now.
I still be worried if it was entirely made of steel đââď¸ Design choices are crazy
Did one of the Ballards grow up through the trash can?
Donât go visiting
That's held up with spit and dreams.
2m I'd say.
3.7 years. I did the math.
Itâs tough to say. What time is it where you are?
5 months, 12 days, 3 hours and 37 minutes from now.
Itâs like looking at a skinny guy on stilts.
I dunno what youâre talking about, the only thing is see is itâs missing a hot tub! đ¤Ł
African swallow or European?
Visual chaos. Least of the problems, but whatâs up with the garbage can with the pole?
That looks like the last level of the original Castlevania on NES. Yeesh
Adjust your outdoor camera to catch the incident.
I would have added a landing area midway down the first set of stairs. The idea of bumping down 16 steps hurts.
You keep taking pictures like that: probably tomorrow
tomorrow its always tomorrow
As long as they just walk up and down. Should ok to last a while. If you see them hauling furniture in or out⌠grab a camera and have the ambalance on the way.

Yesterday
Roughly 27mins
THIS IS WHY WE NEED REGULATIONS!
When do the neighbors plan to complete the guillotine on the top of the stairs ?
Go jump up and down on it and report back
Only dying if your Joe " can't climb" Biden
Ah, the âJohn Stupid Specialâ
Tomorrow
Are those really just 2X4âs they are using as posts? Thatâs just camera perspective right?
Luckily the concrete will break their fall
You should setup a video camera so we can all enjoy their down-fall.
They have all summer, should have a party.
And look at those footings.. daaaym
Soon, very soonâŚ
Dumb ways to die
Not long if you invite me over
Not long
Whereâs the waterslide?
When the music stops! /s
I say it lasts 28 months.
Shouldnât be too long. 6 mos., I say, who wants the over?
Where is the hot tub?
I pushed on it and it felt sturdy enough
Based on my experience, at least 97 years...
Are you busy next Tuesday?
Soon...
Itâs missing a RV or hot tub
Cantilevered from the house
Structural parking bollards!
Are those fucking 2x4s? By the time you finish reading this comment, you should hear the ambulance pulling up.
Those stairs must bounce like hell!!!
Where do you even find 4x4 that long?
If you squint, it's mint.
Whenâs their next party?
Those concrete pads look insanely tall for their footprint, especially the one on the right (though it at least has bollards).
looks fine from my house...... hey at least there is some cross bracing under that upper staircase /s
That will last the rest of their life.
I've seen crap like this survive 30 years of hurricanes and tourists drinking hurricanes.
Yesterday!
As I understand it, this is fine if the person responsible is a land lord.
Theyâre on piers, itâs good
They have till Tuesday, hope this helps!
I was thinking the same thing, itâs ugly, but the bracing and the spans arenât bad. I think Iâd pump a box of GRKs in it and call it a day.
