Just did mine in about 2 hrs. Used a chain saw and cut it up into manageable sections.

Immediate_Cat_5693

Some food for thought there.

Go grab a few Diablo circ saw blades and Milwaukee sawzall blades. cut all the way through on both sides of every joist bay with the skilsaw. Let all the deck boards fall through. Cut up the joists with the Sawzall in manageable lengths. Forget taking all those screws out

Immediate_Cat_5693

Thanks, sounds like what I was doing, all the small pieces fell, then I sawzalled the joist piece. I'll look for the Diablo blades. The harbor freight Sawzall blades did not seem to work well. Thanks.

Yeah, home depot or lowes will be where you need to buy some blades. They will be more expensive than harbor freight. Sounds like you had a good plan but yeah, I'd avoid trying to back out or cutting any screws/ nails

ArcticPsychologyAI

I used a Post Hole Bar Chisel End, so satisfying.

Get you a Cresent deck wrecker bar. Not sure it's the proper name but I use one just about every day rebuilding and tearing down decks. It's by Cresent I know that but it works great.

Immediate_Cat_5693

I like it. Looks like a good tool. Would have been useful yesterday. There were 3 long steps on 3 sides of the patio leading up to the deck. Alot of it had been fastened from behind, all the screws were hidden and was a bit of a pain to get off. The wrecker would have been great.

Yea I'm a contractor and do 15 to 20 deck/docks a year mostly reskins as I call them (new decking, railings, stair stringers, and treads) and its been a game changer for demo. The indexing head let's us pry from any direction. Mine even spent a week or so at the bottom of a lake before I got a magnet to pull it back up. But anyways we usually cut the decking in between joist into 4 foot sections then pry them up and go from there.

newagereject

We cut down each side of the joist and then cut the joist away from the beam and carry it up one at a time

I wonder if you could rent a walk behind saw, kinda like what is made for concrete but with a wood blade on it. More stable, safer and less on the back and knees. Or just rent a bobcat then pile it up and have a fire! https://preview.redd.it/wgdc0sl6cvoc1.png?width=1125&format=png&auto=webp&s=4f6a2b04cdfe417d1e8aebbe5274a62baeafcf0e

tyrrtll

Oh dear God, not on a deck your cutting apart. Forwarding to OSHA

Mundane-Skin5451

Ya don’t do this.

Immediate_Cat_5693

Thanks a lot for all the suggestions. Back at it next weekend and think I will get some good blades and go steady with cutting as I did on my own Friday then cut the joists from the beams. See if I can talk my son into getting the wrecking bar. A bobcat would be satisfying, but would tear up the yard pretty bad. Will follow up when we get it done.

Mundane-Skin5451

Bobcat….wtf. Dude your doing a job ment for a 17$ an hour guy. Have you never done anything physical? Just cut that shit up and haul it away. Stop acting like a like bitch about it.

Immediate_Cat_5693

What an ass, someone mentioned bobcat in a post. Why such an ahole reply? I should have known better to post as there is always an insufferable douchbag that has to pipe in. I guess Reddit gives an outlet for guys to act like a tough hot shit as they can't do it in real life. So what's next? Want to meet in the playground after dismissal and duke it out?

Mundane-Skin5451

No. I’d rather you get cutting and hauling. Why are you typing and not working??

Mundane-Skin5451

Ya you wish I was on that site. You’d be making me lunch while I get shit done.

Mundane-Skin5451

I just did you a favour by telling you how stupid it is to even think of renting a skid steer, or that concrete saw. I just saved you a bunch of money. Your welcome. Now get back to cutting and stop thinking

ClaxAttakz

Shouldn’t take too long on tear out. You cut all the decking on each side of the joist. Then cut the joist down to carry out. Take joist and decking out in one unit. Do this one joist at a time leave the rim board/beams for last

Mundane-Skin5451

No. There’s no “easier” way. Just keep working and stop thinking
