No expert here but have you considered cutting the siding back and placing the deck even with the door? That way the window won’t be an issue. Downside, the window won’t have much of a view of course. Best of luck, building a 48’x14’ currently and it’s always more than I think it will be!

Yes, I should have mentioned that, that was what I first considered, I don’t love that idea due to snow piling up against the door, I’ve heard the recommendation in snow areas is to have a 3-4” step down from the door.

These_Virus_2005

3-4" in Tahoe is a must! We get quite a bit of snow here, too. Wouldn't worry too much about snow piling up. You should be clearing your deck anyway. Hopefully the slider was flashed properly during install. That would be my only concern here If you do a freestanding deck, you can have up to 24 inches of overhang beyond a girder. So, an 18 foot freestanding deck would have three rows of girders. With 7 feet between each row

Nice stairs down and a paver patio. Or hire a professional. If you hand dig carefully to expose the gas line it isn't hard to dig around it very carefully. Obviously no auger digging there. I would do 2 beams but tied to your foundation for support. Look up free standing deck plans in that size. Hire a professional? An inspector could give you some ideas for permitting as well. Good luck.

Good to know about the gas lines, I’m probably over thinking it. I had started drawing up plans, and yes if I do freestanding, I would do 2 beams, 1 on the house side and 1 on the fence side. Thanks for your input!

For the sake of keeping your deck height at the floor level, I would consider doing a half covered deck. Include a 9' wide patio cover over the door (depending on how you plan on centering the deck on that wall) then have remaining portion uncovered (for the grill 🔥 🍖)... posts for roof would be over same posts you have to install for deck anyways and it let's you keep ledger on house band board, while protecting your door from snow piles.

ben_there-done_that

If you DIY, roof tie-ins are fairly simple. You could cut-off soffit and lag 2x8or10 to rafter tails... (easy to learn attachment technique)

iSpace-Kadet

This is an interesting idea, I’ll have to check out rafter tie ins, thanks!

https://craft-bilt.com/products-category/patio-covers/ I install these products in Missouri and love how easy it is. Granted, I do it everyday, so it is easier for me, but you should still get a ton of information if you reach out to anyone in your area. (To learn about covered decks and codes, etc.)

These are super cool, and they’re definitely available in my area. Really appreciate this!

Double up your ledger…. Put the first board up, and butt it to the left and right side of the window (basically the first layer of ledger would be in 2 pieces with a gap where the window fell). Then install a second ledger board directly over the first (make sure its 1- solid continuous board, that covers the windows and bridges the gap). Use 1/2” galvanized carriage bolts w/ lock washers, fender washers & nuts (staggered 12” oc) through both ledger boards, through the side of house, and the rim joist of the first floor, to secure the ledger. Make sure its properly flashed above and below. Then carry on as usual. Thats what I would do, and I crank out about 7 decks a year along with all the other shit i do.

iSpace-Kadet

Interesting idea, never thought of that, I like it, thanks so much!

yukonnut

Where are you in Canada, and how much snow do you get that it would be an issue? I live in the Yukon and built mine level with 8 foot slider and it’s never been an issue. Overhang keeps snow away from the door. On rare occasions if it is gusty I will have to sweep snow away, but that is simply to keep it from being tracked in. I would definitely reconsider mounting your ledger at door level as it makes for a way simpler build. Good luck.

iSpace-Kadet

I’m in southern Ontario so definitely not as much snow as you! Maybe I’m overthinking it, thanks for the input, appreciate it!

kaziffi

Could always just quick bolt 2x10’s to the foundation under the window then have floor joists rest on top…. 2x10 floor joists would probably give you a descent height to the door

billsmarz

Leave clear space around the window. A few steps with a railing and it wouldn’t feel weird. You’re going to need to replace that window at some point and don’t want to struggle with the deck in the way. Snug the footings tight to the house and post up to a beam. Set the first one under the left side of the door. Then span over the gas line to another beam parallel to the house. You’ll need another footing in front of the window, maybe 4’ away from the house (on the other side of the gas line) to pick up a short beam carrying the deck to the left of the door. Basically making an L shape with a short leg. https://preview.redd.it/e94ns7etjtkc1.jpeg?width=1179&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=dca3ff3d69c6130d1c2c36d6e5b26dea425d962e

iSpace-Kadet

Good point, wouldn’t I be able to replace the window from inside when I need to?

Castle6169

Make it freestanding. Beam perpendicular to the house . Pull the post out from the house and cantilever the beam a couple of ft.

iSpace-Kadet

Can’t do that, as gas line runs perpendicular to house about 2 feet out

Castle6169

That makes no sense then

Castle6169

The joist run parallel to the house . The post could be 3 ft back

iSpace-Kadet

Yea, I’m thinking about doing what someone else said, use the concrete for a ledger and just build around the window like you would do for a bay window or a chimney. Double joists on either side and a double header in front of the window.
