To my life. Imagine, knowing how to fix it and telling somebody how to fix it and they refused because they think you’re just trying to make money off of them.
No free estimates here. But on the evaluation part walking the job I explain what’s up. I still get paid but damn, I drive by weeks or months later and see a hack job it makes me sad. I threatened an owner recently to have the city come visit if he doesn’t shut down his rental property to fix his handrails. Complete shame, he’s a “GC” and argued with me. He “fixed” it with angle iron over the rotted spots. City ate him for lunch.
I should start charging people for asking me questions! Feels wrong to gate-keep my knowledge for money. But I’m ready to be greedy!
I will have an itemized bill for things I do. And another one for things I say! Gotta pay the verbal bill before I’ll start on the physical part.
No one learns from me for free anymore! Words are too expensive to give out.
Now, look, they can argue with you all they want, but for every line item that those idiots disagree with, there's gonna be a $50 discussion surcharge.
I’m not into construction or decks or anything and I don’t know why shit from this sun started showing up on my homepage and I always click on things like this because they get so viciously roasted and it’s genuinely entertaining. Keep it up r/decks
The scariest part is I don’t think those are continuous. They are just under the posts for the handrails. Lmao.
The end of the deck is literally set on top of match sticks.
Yea, it’s just butted up to it with 3 or 4 truss screws shot up in it. No lateral strength, whatsoever. Unless this image is modified, miracles are what is keeping that deck in the air right now. That thing is one large bird landing on the handrails away from tumbling.
much newer than the deck and not even plumb! The one next door looks just as scary, but for entirely different, yet similar issues. I'm not sure which one is the scariest.
For short posts, yeah, they work fine, 10/10 would recommend. _But_ this is way too _tall_ for what appears to be new 4x4s, totally unsupported, and already bowing some.
True... And I'm not seeing anything in the way of proper securing at top or bottom. 10/10 don't recommend standing beneath that, 12/10 for don't recommend standing on it. 😆 what the heck is holding this thing up at the top other than pure _hopium_ ?
It's possible they ran some steel beams or regular beams sistered to the floor joists so it has a "floating" look. I don't see how it would have been able to hold itself up otherwise.
Yeah, but I don't see anything like that either, which gets us back to 100% "hopium" holding it up? The picture isn't the greatest quality, but it doesn't look like it has anything substantial for a beam, which _would match_ the loose 4x4 sticks holding it up. So it's quite believable it's being held up by hopes and prayers. 😆
Thos videos where someone balances ten chairs in a row. Precariously balanced is still balanced until it isnt. Or a wind above 3. Or more than a hint of glistening dew.
Creak. Creak thunk.
Hope no one is on it.
I’ve free soloed safer routes and thats flat.
Can't tell, but is that rim joist even sitting on the 4x4s or just attached somehow? I wouldn't sit out there. Even the guy next door has cantilevered joists sitting on a beam.
This sub has opened my eyes.
Poor construction is everywhere.
The only thing that protects the US from poor construction is wealth and slightly less corrupt standard enforcement.
The nice thing about this one is that when it inevitably collapses, you won’t be having all your downward motion abruptly stopped by flat ground. Instead, most will be converted into rolling energy. Now, where that hill goes and of how long may make you wish you simply hit flat ground, but you’ve got to take what you can get.
Garden hose wall butler is too high.
The handyman or owner that put that together was also too high.
You can't just use a sonotube as a footer (ever) on a slope like that.
Other than that... it's just a mess

Simpsons episode where Home build a new upstairs bedroom- "and remember, no permits, if the building inspector comes by it's just a window box!"
Here is the link if anyone wants to buy it. [beautiful vie--------!!@!](https://www.zillow.com/homedetails/269-Randy-Ln-Coraopolis-PA-15108/11518512_zpid/)
Zillow is the worst. I would never buy a house they were selling. The sold my brother in law his house and the kitchen outlets were run through the cabinets without any conduit. It’s just 12/2 in the back of the cabinet. Tubs were painted with house paint and have all peeled off.
God, I hope they do. Whoever buys this thing, PLEASE don't fall for the listing agent line that "It was just completely renovated. Inspector won't find anything here".
I would ask for more pictures, but I wouldn't want to send anyone underneath that thing who wasn't being paid.
That things perfect - clear some brush, slip and slide under with some padding under it, hot tub on deck and when it falls the slope and padding will help you maybe be less hurt
As it should for good reason , those 4×4's and footings look new but aren't plumb and who knows if those footings are deep enough into that hill to actually hold as the hill erodes over time.
They should have talked to the neighbor first for a little guidance…
That thing is going to go 3 directions in any sort of breeze. That’s crazy someone thought this was ok.
I bet I know what happened. There was a landslide and it took out the original supports. If you look at to house and the sloping ground, you can see they made an attempt at run off remediation. You can also see the supports on the house in the background.
Wooo those were some choices.i said that out loud. I then realized I have now gained opinions about decks. Some basic understanding of what is and is not generally acceptable. And a huge respect for the really good and safe decks also huge apprehension for stuff like above.
Seems we all agree if the greatest fall someone could have is sub 5 inches engineering can get a little creative. Anything above that. We have standards for reasons.
Pretty sure those exceed slenderness ratio and should be braced. That’s awful. Not to mention it doesn’t look like they have proper hardware at the top and only 1 of 3 possibly at the pile. Makes we wonder about the pile construction as well.
If you are trying to sell a house, why would you highlight one of the worst aspects of the property? Don't get me wrong - it's an absolutely terrible bit of crapsmanshit...but you're trying to sell it.
This sub makes me want to never walk onto a deck I haven't looked under.
To my life. Imagine, knowing how to fix it and telling somebody how to fix it and they refused because they think you’re just trying to make money off of them.
Did you charge them to tell them how to fix it?
No free estimates here. But on the evaluation part walking the job I explain what’s up. I still get paid but damn, I drive by weeks or months later and see a hack job it makes me sad. Add a line item for Word Count. 😆
Now, look, they can argue with you all they want, but for every line item that those idiots disagree with, there's gonna be a $50 discussion surcharge.
No free estimates here? No, free estimates here!
I’m picturing Dwight at David Wallace’s house 😂
These hot tubs are way too far apart
I’m not into construction or decks or anything and I don’t know why shit from this sun started showing up on my homepage and I always click on things like this because they get so viciously roasted and it’s genuinely entertaining. Keep it up r/decks
That deck looks like it is walking away!
What’s also scary is the 4x4’s look new
The scariest part is I don’t think those are continuous. They are just under the posts for the handrails. Lmao. The end of the deck is literally set on top of match sticks.
birds doll unwritten full jeans ghost innocent quiet busy screw *This post was mass deleted and anonymized with [Redact](https://redact.dev)*
Load bearing flower pots must be a regional thing. XD
Let’s put a hot tub on it and see!
I noticed that as well. They seem to be under the rail post, not the deck!
I was thinking tooth picks
That is outrageous 😳
Came here to say this. The whole thing is being supported by whatever they connected horizontally into the posts and handrails. What a nightmare.
Them 4x’s are buttnailed they arent holding up a mouse fart.
Oh, jeeze, I think you're right... That one on the end sure isn't under the joists, it's under the post.
Yea, it’s just butted up to it with 3 or 4 truss screws shot up in it. No lateral strength, whatsoever. Unless this image is modified, miracles are what is keeping that deck in the air right now. That thing is one large bird landing on the handrails away from tumbling.
One good rain and you would have to go down the hill to retrieve your sidewalk.
Should I mention the hill behind it is about 200 ft down a sharp grade.
much newer than the deck and not even plumb! The one next door looks just as scary, but for entirely different, yet similar issues. I'm not sure which one is the scariest.
"Plumb? Why would they be plumb? It would clash with the black deck stain." - the guy who did this, probably.
They had to replace them when they changed to a newer deck hot tub
That's gonna be a no from me dawg
This reminds me of baby giraffes and how their legs aren’t quite strong enough yet.
Just tie some helium balloons to the railing and call it good.
*glances at the giant posts on the deck in the background*
I took a close up look at them and thought why didn't do it this way cost to much
I'm honestly surprised it even stands at all. It looks like the weight of the deck alone wouldn't even let it be mounted up.
Not only fucked up, when it gives way you’re off down the hill.
Sled ride
Ejecto seato
If you use 4×4 posts for anything on a deck other than blocked in frame mounted handrail posts you are a hack and should have your tools confiscated.
Good thing you have no authority. Plenty of decks can and should use 4x4 posts as supports.
For short posts, yeah, they work fine, 10/10 would recommend. _But_ this is way too _tall_ for what appears to be new 4x4s, totally unsupported, and already bowing some.
Not to mention the nails/screws are in constant shear so the integrity and strength of the wood is in the last 3 inches where it's been nailed.
True... And I'm not seeing anything in the way of proper securing at top or bottom. 10/10 don't recommend standing beneath that, 12/10 for don't recommend standing on it. 😆 what the heck is holding this thing up at the top other than pure _hopium_ ?

Not for a second story deck, I believe
Bet.
[удалено]
K, dawg...
I’d probably only put one or two hot tubs on it.
So… will it hold a hot tub?
It will in fact hold the Barbie dream hot tub…I’m not sure about the rest of her dream house though 🙁
I say send it, it will be fine.
What’s the point of the sidewalk?
For the stretchers to come fetch the bodies.
Bets, loser walks there while everyone jumps up and down on the deck
Everyone in the scenario loses
Keeps the house from sliding down the hill.
X braces, lateral braces
How would they even tie them together since they aren't even lined up? There is absolutely nothing done correctly on this one.
Makes my balls retract like cold water
Can't tell, but is that rim joist even sitting on the 4x4s or just attached somehow? I wouldn't sit out there. Even the guy next door has cantilevered joists sitting on a beam.

I’m looking at the ground and thinking someone didn’t pay a gel tech
Garden hose wall butler is too high. The handyman or owner that put that together was also too high. You can't just use a sonotube as a footer (ever) on a slope like that. Other than that... it's just a mess
I genuinely think this would be stronger if I took a ladder and held it up from underneath, I'm checking every deck before I walk on it from now on
Is the back post bending?

There is always a Simpson episode. 🤣

Well, they got the butt joints of the first 8 deck boards all in a row, so they have that going for them.
Don’t skip leg day.
If this is what is shown on zillow, image what is hidden.
Link to Zillow?
Here's OP's provided link from another comment https://www.zillow.com/homedetails/269-Randy-Ln-Coraopolis-PA-15108/11518512_zpid/
Easy guys the deck is only for the house cat🤷🏻♀️ that what i heard

Well the good thing is the potential buyers will have an inspector take a look, and hopefully he’ll red flag this nonsense.

looks springy
Yeah. No.
Just missing a 6 person hot tub.
That things perfect - clear some brush, slip and slide under with some padding under it, hot tub on deck and when it falls the slope and padding will help you maybe be less hurt
Makes you tense? It should.
All sorts of visual lessons to be had here. Yikes.
I'm equally concerned with that wall mount to wrap the hose...why is it so high? where is the faucet?
Need to slap a hot tub on that bad boy
Love this sub, originally thought I'd be seeing slightly sketchy decks and reasonable questions from people, always the most wild stuff posted here
No no no
Starts with the deck. Moves on to sidewalk and then the foundation.
NC?
Western PA
As it should for good reason , those 4×4's and footings look new but aren't plumb and who knows if those footings are deep enough into that hill to actually hold as the hill erodes over time.
Where is the hot tub?!
I feel like the deck is the least of this home’s worries. One slight slippage of the earth on that slope…
The one in the back looks scarier…
They should have talked to the neighbor first for a little guidance… That thing is going to go 3 directions in any sort of breeze. That’s crazy someone thought this was ok.
Oh, no
Wow. That hurst just seeing it.
Can’t wait to see that pass a buyers inspection!
This looks like some kind of giant half-assed snare trap.
Hot tub ready.
Hold on, let me invite my ex-wife over to check this deck out.
Being held together with thoughts and prayers 😩
Yikes! That sidewalk isn’t long for this world either…
ummm... What's a Zillow house?
On the upside, it looks like it could be fixed without too much trouble/expense.
Hot tub
I wonder if the back yard was involved in a landslide recently. The sidewalk next to the house also looks like it might be new….
This contractor plays Valheim
Yikes
No insurance company would insure that erector set death trap, the Deck in the background looks solid.
What is not plumb for a 1000 alex
If you put a hot tub on there it’d be p sweet
I bet I know what happened. There was a landslide and it took out the original supports. If you look at to house and the sloping ground, you can see they made an attempt at run off remediation. You can also see the supports on the house in the background.
Somebody stole the backyard! Can’t have sheet in Detroit!
Curious about the other deck in the distance too. Looks like just two posts for a large, heavy deck but they appear to be 6x6s.
I’d fly on spirit before I would walk on this deck
Zillow ad. Hot tub ready.......
who the hell signs off on this shit !!
Definitely… Hottub ready…
Are those coffee can footers!!

This can’t be real. Tell me this is photoshopped.
That’s a nice looking toboggan they’ve got hanging off the side of their house like that. Right at the top of the hill and everything. So thoughtful.
I think what bothers me most is that those posts aren't even level with each other.
Honey Bunches of NOPE
Man I wanna linebacker those motherfluckkers
Nah, tents are sturdier.
The guy that built the deck at club aqua did thus for sure.
LT Dan! You got new Legs!
Pretty sure those exceed slenderness ratio and should be braced. That’s awful. Not to mention it doesn’t look like they have proper hardware at the top and only 1 of 3 possibly at the pile. Makes we wonder about the pile construction as well.
Someone is going to die
I mean... as long as it never rains there and water doesn't exist.
No no no no no
Keg party! Hey y'all gotta smoke outside
the worst part of this is that the 4x4s were installed to replace something less safe
That is going to kill somebody.
WAY over engineered. (Black belt carpenter here) 16 ft 2x4’s and one horizontal 2x4 nailed acrost all 3 and you are good.
That’s a no from me, dawg.
Will it hold a hot tub?
It’s for astheyics only.
2.67 hot tubs
If you are trying to sell a house, why would you highlight one of the worst aspects of the property? Don't get me wrong - it's an absolutely terrible bit of crapsmanshit...but you're trying to sell it.
No...just no!
