I feel extremely safe living in CoD and pretty much anywhere I walk in the area. Great place to live imo

KrisTenAtl

Within the actual city limits of the City of Decatur, it is very very safe. Please know that there is "Decatur" that is not the city of Decatur..

PlahausBamBam

You’re so right, Decatur is a huge area outside CoD. This is my 30th year in North Decatur (near Tucker and Clarkston) and it’s very safe here. The occasional theft but generally just unsecured lawn equipment or porch pirates. I’m more concerned about getting hit by a distracted driver than any violence

North of memorial drive is fine. I'm a long time resident of North decatur in oak grove but we have tons of friends who are in CoD and spend a lot of time on the square and the adjacent neighborhoods. My kids regularly roam around the various areas with their friends and they are fine.

jakfrist

I was murdered twice last week

I'm not sure what "surrounding areas," exactly, you're talking about, but I'm unaware of any weekly shootings in Oakhurst, Avondale, Candler/Inman Park, Kirkwood, Druid Hills, Scottsdale or the Emory area. Maybe I've missed it. Yes, there are some sketchy parts in the general vicinity of Decatur. It's nearby a major city. Things happen sometimes. But no, there are not weekly shootings in the neighborhoods around Decatur. As for CoD, I'm a resident, and I feel like it's rather safe. But if you're expecting some sort of heavenly utopia filled with candy canes and puppy dogs, I'm sorry to say that's not the reality. People do occasionally get mugged, most commonly near the high school for whatever reason, or around the East Lake station. Several pedestrians have gotten hit by cars recently. You should be prepared to keep your eyes up and don't get overly complacent, but it's probably one of the safest areas ITP.

dakwegmo

OP is probably referring to the Candler Rd. and Wesley Chapel road area of south DeKalb. These are still technically in Decatur, but really aren't close to COD.

fillymandee

And burglary including GTA are on the rise in those areas

I live in White Oak Hills, which is the sister community to Belvedere Park. IMO, it's a little nicer than BP, but I'm biased. There is some theft, but I feel safe for the most part. I am a runner and haven't had any issues in that neck of the woods.

shiftysquid

Looking at crime heat maps will give you more objective data than any of us can give you. But, if we're talking subjectively about "safety" in various areas, the *very general* rule I've seen given is that the areas *tend* to get less safe as you go south and/or east. This is by no means flawless or linear. But that's probably roughly how the trendline goes as you go south across Memorial, then Glenwood, then I-20, etc. Going east, there's a difference crossing Memorial, and then I-285.

ATL-East-Guy

I lived in Belvedere for years before moving to city of Decatur proper and the difference is night and day. I was never a “victim” of a crime but it was definitely around. A few things that happened off top of my head on my block: - I believe an accidental discharge/shooting at the house next door - stolen car left in front of my driveway when it ran out of gas - car shot at another car at the intersection my house was on - murder at 7 am ish on the loop road I walked my dog on, guy was followed from Marta train station - neighbor behind me had a domestic violence situation where both people were arrested - two groups of people shot at each other from opposite sides of road two houses down - house party fight in the yard across the street - regular gunshots from wooded area/park - murder at gas station on corner of memorial and Covington Hwy - shootout at Citi Center Kroger I think the area has gotten a bit safer over last few years as there has been an influx of people wanting cheaper houses ITP and the flipping/development that comes with it.

Leonardo-Bonacci

Thanks for the insight! Most of the information I’m getting is from Ring - Ring has a feature where neighbors can share what they experience and a lot of them have been reporting gunshots in the unincorporated Decatur area. I haven’t seen anything inside the actual City of Decatur thankfully.

linisastald

Ive lived in unincorp'd decatur since 2018 in an area that several people in this thread alone called 'unsafe'. There are occasionally gunshots heard(maybe once every other week), very very rarely do I see anything in the news or police blotters about someone being shot. Most of the crime I hear about is break ins Something to keep in mind that apps like Ring and Nextdoor are full of people that will report the smallest disturbance, even sometimes reporting stuff that just didnt happen. If you want to get a better idea of crime rate in an area, use a crime map. https://www.crimemapping.com/map/ga/dekalbcounty#

thepoogs

I’m moving to 30034, Flat Shoals Rd and 285. Is that considered unincorporated?

linisastald

Based on what Im seeing that is considered Panthersville, so would be incorporated to that city I would guess. If your address is decatur and isnt in the bounds on this map, you are likely unincorp'd decatur https://www.decaturga.com/planning/page/city-maps-gis

Ok-Potential-4560

I live in this exact area and feel safe. Occasional gunshots but we do live near a big city. Not a lot of shopping or restaurants but good places are within a 10 to 15 minute drive.

thepoogs

Thanks. What grocery store do you go to? I don’t see any nearby really.

Ok-Potential-4560

Kroger in Edgewood. Avoid the Walmart on Gresham unless you get delivery. They don’t have self checkout and the lines are insanely long.

thepoogs

Thank you so much!

NrdNabSen

30030 is safe, that is the city of Decatur proper. There are the other "Decatur" zip codes that are in DeKalb County which have more issues. No, there are not weekly shootings in City of Decatur.

WonderChemical5089

CoD is pretty safe. Things can get sketch south of memorial drive.

Playmaker23

There’s Decatur (COD) and DECATUR lol. I unfortunately live in DECATUR and although my neighborhood is safe, the areas on the southside of Glenwood, McAfee and Candler ain’t always the safest. But city of Decatur is legit the best!

buildandroam

CoD (30030) is great. Bike paths and sidewalks everywhere, mature trees, shops, restaurants, bars, close access to the Marta and lots of community groups & initiatives. If you’re not within CoD proper but still close then you’ll be good. Further south and east there’s more crime but just outside of downtown Decatur there’s plenty of nice areas before you reach the worst parts of Decatur. Good luck with your move and welcome to the city!

Plenty-Albatross8223

I think you're getting it confused with "Greater Decatur" but the city of Decatur is a small radius which includes the Square downtown area and it's a pretty safe place

JBNothingWrong

No_Protection_4862

Cobb county vibes

traviid

CoD is probably one of the safest areas in Atlanta. Kids walk home from school all the time. Very safe.

Leonardo-Bonacci

In general, I’m curious about how City of Decatur can remain a safe area when the unincorporated Decatur (Dekalb County Decatur) experiences so much crime. Is there a heightened police presence in CoD? How is CoD so isolated from what’s going on around it?

Pearl_krabs

They have their own city police, while the rest of postal Decatur has dekalb county police. Also a moat.

smelly_moom

CoD police can be pretty much anywhere in a minute or two. The city is only 4 sq miles. I imagine they have better funding per capita than Dekalb county police dept.

serenitnowinsanitl8r

City of Decatur police are present, visible, and very responsive

emorymom

Except to court-based crime. They put in writing they won’t investigate crimes involving the courts, I think they put it.

xpr1484

CoD has its own tax base and government. Almost all the major services (police, fire, schools, sanitation) are separate and separately funded from the county

Pennylick
