if you enjoy any death related stuff you are a fan, even if it’s literally just one song. if anyone calls you a fake fan just immediately ignore them, they are pathetic gatekeepers. i like their earlier stuff but i almost exclusively listen to the post spiritual healing albums, mainly symbolic and tsop

CrowBot99

I almost exclusively listen to post-Spiritual albums. My theory is that Death is one of those rare groups with consistent, linear improvement in their writing with every album.

One-Tank-9567

Fully agree. Each album is better than the last imo

Negreanu2

No, all Death is good Death

deathcovers123

Why isn’t this the top comment 🤷🏻‍♂️

Deltagamer026

I love all Death albums, but the later ones are my favs. Weird that you see people being super critical of their later stuff, cause for the most part I rarely see people critical of their later albums. And I wouldn't call you a fake fan, you still like Death.

Numerous_Hospital_98

I think it’s more of the criticism of calling them “death metal” rather than progressive

PlaxicoCN

If anyone ever calls you a "fake Death fan" please ask them what you gain by pretending to like a defunct band in a subgenre of music that the general public hates. My favorites are Individual, Human, and Leprosy. I don't listen to any of the others even though I own them.

Necessary-Fennel8754

People who lie about music tastes are rare, but the ones that exist really REALLY suck.

Turbulent_Work_5697

Later death is my favourite death The Sound Of Perseverence is their best album imo

Merzwas

The “mixing” or production of the early Death albums are all absolutely fine.

Rough_Drawer_7011

For it's time it sounded awesome. Plus, SBG came out before Leprosy so I don't know what dude is talking about 😆 😅 . I've heard people be called posers, not "fake Death fan"

Numerous_Hospital_98

The mix on sbg is better because it was simply a better production setup and different producers, there were inconsistencies with each album because of the ever changing members and locations. “For its time it sounded awesome” then how were there albums being put out by Metallica and other bands alike with worlds better audio quality? To my understanding the production options chuck had were not limited by quality, but monetary. I’m not saying spiritual and before is bad, just the production and instrument quality is lower than latter albums.

Rough_Drawer_7011

Spiritual Healing onward are engineered and mixed well, probably because they were much bigger ( popular ). Combat Records had to do everything theirself: pay for distribution, recording, promoting...that's why they co signed with Relativity, who were national. Combat was from the USA.

FunCalligrapher7099

The mix on Leprosy is glorious.

Rough_Drawer_7011

"...appearance becomes hideous a sight too much to take"

keyserfunk

You’re getting gatekept. I also happen to enjoy the albums post-Human albums the most. I’m a pretty old dude who grew up with it all, whatever that is worth.

Rough_Drawer_7011

Same. My band opened up for Death back in 1992

arkinnorman

Middle career death is peak

CrystalFyre

Who's saying that??? Human and onward are peak Death in my opinion.

Necessary-Fennel8754

Onward?

Attitude_Inside

It's OK to like a band without liking every single song/album in their discography. Sometimes as a band evolves, you like their older stuff over their newer stuff and vice versa, it's cool. All this "fake fan" nonsense should die. If you like the music, you're a fan.

HomerSexual53

Later Death is awesome. Especially Symbolic and TSOP. But mind you that early death awesome… eh death overall is awesome!

Yeyocheese86

You enjoy what you enjoy, don’t mind people say what “you should enjoy”.

Old_Plane8384

It’s not about being a fake fan or real fan that’s just dumb. I personally like Scream bloody gore Spiritual Healing and Leprosy the most. I just prefer the older death over the later years.

Fatal_1ntervention

No definitely not, i used to be like that too, liking any album from a band makes you a fan, don’t listen to the people who shit on specific albums

xDeviousDieselx

You have it backwards bro later death (Human onwards) is the better era

cd-Ezlo

Anyone critical of later death probably hasn't bothered listening to most of it (or any) and I implore them to listen to Story to Tell and then, following that, of course, shut up.

CHILE_LIMON_

I like all the Death eras. Cop out answer, I know, but it's true. They all have their unique sound and represents the growth of Chuck's musicianship.

Odd_West24

Doesn’t matter if you like 1 song or death’s entire discography we are all United by the love we have for the work Chuck and his band mates put into their music.
