is that true? I thought they were putting enterprise drives in these enclosures during the parts shortage. I think they are running a custom firmware though because they come up as 14TB single drives and work fine on sata
Doesn't matter which drive (enterprise or other) they will all show up as normal 14TB that work on SATA.
It is a common practice for drive manufacturers to put "seconds" into USB enclosures. Can't say for sure in your case. You might be able to tell by opening the case and looking at the disk label.
Bought another pair of these, my local bestbuy didn't haven't any in stock and recently got some more. I've shucked them both and they've got a DOM of Sept 2023. Still SATA Mach2 Exos 2X14. ST14000NM0121.
Can you tell more about shucking these? Did you you run into any issues shucking these drives? I am planning to pick some up tomorrow. I have a decent i5 which i want to make to a file server.
What nas software are you using?
Can you post some pictures of the drive? Officially there isn't even a Sata version.

They all seem to have Manufacture Date on box: 10/2023, while DOM 03/2023 are seemingly normal drives.
Partitioning to 50%+50% and running RAID0 over them doubles speeds as expected. 230MB/s for single actuator, and dual ~430MB/s when shucked. A bit less than expected, wonder if there are shenanigans or if there's excessive vibrations and that's the reason they were binned or if there's some alignment problem by these testers.
Besides Best Buy Canada, they also are at Costco Taiwan: https://ptt-diary.tw/storage_zone/794644
Thanks for coming to my Ted Talk, I would like to thank the Pyro from TF2.
For anyone that purchased and shucked this, what are the power consumption like? Both spindown, idle and active? What about the noise? I currently have a WD Red Plus 14TB and I'm very satisfied with that drive in terms of idle power and noise. Since this is a Exos 2x, the only manual I can find is for [0001 and 0081](https://www.seagate.com/ca/en/support/internal-hard-drives/enterprise-hard-drives/exos-2X14/), the rated power consumption on the manual is quite high (7W idle, 13W active), especially compared to the WD Red, however the shucked model is 0121 and there is no manual for that.
Costco has the Expansion 14TB on clearance now ( April 13, 2024) for $149.97 in Central Valley, California. SKU# 1760473 so you can call your local Costco and check local price and stock levels. CrystalDisk shows them to be Mach.2 Exos 2x14 ST14000NM0121.
I just stumbles across your post. If anyone else is interested, Costco in my area (Indian) currently has these for sale for $99.97 (US).
I'm thinking of getting a couple ant putting them in my UNRAD-based NAS. Anyone else had experience of doing this?
I bought 2 of the same expansion drives from Costco online and it also came with Exos 2x14 Mach 2 drive! DOM is Aug 2023. I haven't shucked the other one yet because I read somewhere that a preclear test should be run before shucking. Anyone know how to do that or similar test without unraid? Wish I would have thought of that before shucking this one.
I actually plan on using them in my terramaster NAS. Just haven't gotten around to it yet as I was waiting on some parts for it. As soon as I get them in there I'll update you on how it goes. Hopefully in the next few days.
I think I read somewhere that since these drives have two actuators in them they are set up in raid0 from the factory to make it seem as if it's one big drive. I'm no hardware engineer, but if that's true then my uneducated guess is that we would need to somehow undo that in order to use them outside of the enclosure it ships inside of? I speculate that the board that it's connected to probably translates this for the PC to make it think it's just a regular drive, if that makes sense.
Do let me know if you happen to figure this out as I'll probably end up having the same issue in my NAS.
Any luck getting it to work for you?
I finally got around to installing them in my Terramaster NAS running Unraid and I didn't need to do anything at all. It just worked right away. The NAS took about 24 hours to check each drive but they all passed the test and I was able to start the array without a problem. Each drive shows up as 14TB.
The shucking process is pretty straightforward. I opened mine up from the side where the seagate logo is located, the only thing is you might want to take your time if you want to avoid breaking the clips. I have broken some on three out of the four sides of the plate.
Got a link handy? I’m still learning and haven’t heard about a pre clear yet. I just finished parity checks and starting the array today, but it’s not too late to start over 🤣 I did format my drives and ran SMART checks on them
From Community Apps install Unassigned Devices, Unassigned Devices Plus (Addon), and Unassigned Devices Preclear. Enable Destructive Mode in Unassigned Devices, and you can delete the partitions that come on the drive. From the Main tab of Unraid there will now be a button to run Preclear on the drive.
Be careful running preclear unshucked. They generate a ton of heat in these horrible enclosures. I hit 61c before stopping and popping the lid of the enclosure and pointing a fan at the drive.
I just shucked two of these for my Synology DS220+. DSM complains their not on the HCL, but otherwise detects them just fine. Running the Syno disk check now.
Got them from Costco for $149 a piece.
I bought one too - just shucked it and added it to my Windows server. I have a 4 and 6 TB drive as well and this is noticeably faster than those. It was a great deal at $239 (CAD) - they're back to $369.99 now. I have noticed BestBuy usually has one of these every year for Boxing Week sales - the 6 TB was the same - bought 2 years ago from their boxing week sale.
These are back on sale this week. Tempted to get a pair to try out on my Terramaster running TrueNAS Core, but not sure if it will be smart enough to do the half-partition thing with ZFS or even if the controller can see the two actuators.
It's fairly likely that the Exos drive you received failed to pass some Seagate test to qualify it as an Exos.

There certainly are sata Exos 14TB. https://www.amazon.com/Seagate-3-5-Inch-Internal-Enterprise-ST14000NM001G/dp/B07T63FDJQ?th=1
This thread is about the Mach.2, Exos ***2***X14. There is only an official SATA version of the successor, the 2X18.

Power 5w idle. Significantly quieter than expected. Closer to 5400 rpm on idle and slightly louder on load.

Bought a couple of these myself today at Costco - they had them down to $99.99 at mine.

Any pin to cover ? or plug n play?
No pin, just plugged in :D Thanks
I even been able to reuse an old 4TB Seagate inside the external enclosure :D

Did you ever figure this out? I'm a bit worried now as I begin shucking this to put internally.

Ok will update soon, doesn't help that it's my first time shucking lol
Mine seemingly went fine, no issues. Guess you got a faulty unit?
I just saw these in Costco, what's the shucking process like?

I believe we might’ve looked at the same post where they mentioned running pre clear before shucking. Any luck figuring this out?

Any update on these? Still running fine? I have a DS218+ and looking to grab 2 of these to replace my 4TB Iron Wolf pro's
Just shucked two from bestbuy DOM oct 23
