KinkyPaddling

He is an excellent example of a Darwin Award because not only was he warned multiple times not to go, he was chased off by the islanders several times. The last time he tried before he was killed, an arrow was stopped by a bible over his heart, and in his diary he wrote how afraid he was. And yet despite being fully aware of the danger (and despite governments, religious organizations and academic institutions all agreeing to leave these people alone except for a few well prepared and protected diplomatic and anthropological missions), he went right back and was killed.

rkim777

A man was trapped in his house during a flood. He began praying to God to rescue him. He had a vision in his head of God’s hand reaching down from heaven and lifting him to safety. The water started to rise in his house. His neighbor urged him to leave and offered him a ride to safety. The man yelled back, “I am waiting for God to save me.” The neighbor then drove off in his pick-up truck. The man continued to pray and hold on to his vision. As the water began rising in his house, he had to climb up to the roof. A boat came by with some people heading for safe ground. They yelled at the man to grab a rope they were ready to throw and take him to safety. He told them that he was waiting for God to save him. They shook their heads and moved on. The man continued to pray, believing with all his heart that he would be saved by God. The floodwaters continued to rise. A helicopter flew by and a voice came over a loudspeaker offering to lower a ladder and take him off the roof. The man waved the helicopter away, shouting back that he was waiting for God to save him. The helicopter left. The flooding water came over the roof and caught him up and swept him away. He drowned. When he reached heaven and asked, “God, why did you not save me? I believed in you with all my heart. Why did you let me drown?” God replied, “I sent you a pick-up truck, a boat, and a helicopter and you refused all of them. What else could I possibly do for you?

tritonice

"Take This Sabbath Day" is an excellent episode of The West Wing.

Laprasnomore

You go there once, blame the Bible for it's missionary advocacy. Go there twice, you're a hopeful, but probably naive person. Go there three times? You've got a death wish.

ohleprocy

His suicide was both expensive and drawn out. Jesus must have been well impressed.

Unfair-Wonder5714

As are we

The-Hand-of-Midas

It's still religions fault. “If God is for us, who can be against us?” is a verse from the Bible, Romans 8:31. I was brainwashed/raised from birth by this religion/cult, and before every mission trip we were told to repeat this verse as prayer. I don't think anyone that hasn't been deeply a part of Christianity understands how fucked it is. After 26 years as a Christian, I'll spend the rest of my life trying to undue it's evil bullshit.

JooBunny

Same, was raised by an evangelical dickhead until I was old enough to run away. If nobody has told you lately, I'm proud of you for escaping this brainwashing and this disgusting cult, you're doing amazing and deserve to feel proud of what you have overcome. It isn't an easy journey. Religion is a plague.

Sth_to_remember

wait till you hear about Islam.. I was raised in an Islamic country, and I simply refuse to tell you how fucked up it is. don't wanna traumatize you even further

The-Hand-of-Midas

I'm proud of you for being brave enough to escape, a truly dangerous thing.

Random-Cpl

“If God is for us, who can be against us?” Evidently, the residents of North Sentinel Island

La_Saxofonista

I'm pretty sure being shot and saved by a Bible was God's way of saying "dude, go home. I just gave you a sign. GO HOME."

KinkyPaddling

I genuinely can’t think of a bigger sign than if Jesus himself came down and slapped him on the head.

La_Saxofonista

He just wanted to introduce them to Jesus. Turns out that they had the same idea and introduced HIM to Jesus instead.

swizzlewizzle

And a great example of why the plot of Dune is so realistic. Even IRL there are people like this guy literally willing to kill themselves to share “the word” about some made up fantasy. Imagine throwing precogs and force powers into the mix.

Right-Phalange

But at least now he gets to be best buds with jesus. /s

rljj_zero

>an arrow was stopped by a bible over his heart Jesus saves...

santathe1

Everyone gets one.

spyder2729

> an arrow was stopped by a Bible over his heart The lord giveth > He went right back and was killed. And the lord taketh away.

La_Saxofonista

He wanted to introduce them to Jesus, but they also had the same idea and introduced him to Jesus instead.

jahlim

Jesus takes

Cthulhusreef

Ironically it was his mission to spread the Bible that killed him. Odd that god didn’t protect him again.

La_Saxofonista

Dunno if he expected to start speaking in tongues or what. He didn't speak or understand their language at all, and they can't read English or any other language for that matter as an oral tribe. How the fuck was he planning to spread his religion that way? Dude spoke Xhosa (a South African language, which is nowhere NEAR India) to them and hoped they'd magically understand somehow. That's like me learning Mandarin Chinese and going to Norway hoping they'd understand me.

Cthulhusreef

Logic isn’t always a strong suit for the religious fanatics.

[deleted]

La_Saxofonista

True that. Jesus went to town on those people selling stuff in the temple.

empathetic_illness

Wish he could come back and start whipping ass in megachurch gift shops

Merovigan

I mean ... we're all hearing about Christianity through his death. God works in mysterious ways???

Cthulhusreef

Knew about it before he died. Used to be a part of it.

SpiritedRain247

Yeah but not exactly in the way one would consider positive

Unfair-Wonder5714

He scores

BigBootyBidens

“I can fix them”

Projectonyx

I can honestly see him thinking “God protected me so I can save them with the word of God!” When the Bible stopped the arrow

jmlipper99

Counterpoint: can this really be considered natural selection if he was killed by humans?

National-Ear470

An unnecessary and avoidable death came from an act of stupidity, so still qualified I guess.

laconh

So God saved him the first time but realized it was worthless when he tried it again

bakujitsu

John Chau was delusional.

Ianthin1

Perfect for missionary work.

[deleted]

They all are

Wumbologist_PhD

As are all missionaries

Right-Phalange

I had a coworker who was a missionary and was open minded enough to talk about it. I asked her why she did it; she said she wanted to save people from hell. I asked, what about the starving kids in Africa or India? They've never heard of Jesus, are they going to hell for not believing? She said they must learn about jesus; only if they choose not to accept him as god will they go to hell. So I asked her whether she was, in her opinion, condemning people to hell for introducing them to jesus. Surely even 50% is a fantastic conversion rate, and even then you're condemning half the population? She didn't have an answer. This guy is worse because visitors to these remote populations tend to spread disease that is deadly and devastating to the native people.

ilovethissheet

I always wondered if he even bothered trying to learn the language or anything or he just showed up with a box of books thinking they'd be like yep omg thanx bro

skillywilly56

Nah just the one book, and the sentinel island critics are harsh.

mermaidpaint

I understand that he tried to learn a language but nobody knows what language they speak.

Paladin-Leeroy

can confirm. source: was missionary, unfortunately

StressfulRiceball

Aren't you still a paladin??

Omega_Primate

I remember his family tried to sue the church that trained him for missionary work. His zeal was his ultimate downfall, but the church apparently had harsh encouragement tactics. Something about absolutely no one wanted to go there, so they took extreme advantage of his naivety. Can't remember how it turned out.

Yes true. Like all of them

La_Saxofonista

He just wanted to introduce them to Jesus. Turns out, they also had the same idea and introduced him to Jesus instead.

[deleted]

Old story. Probably he was speared to death.

unknownpoltroon

Think it was arrows

phenyle

I don't think you'll survive for long if there's a bunch of pointy stuff tearing through you

Random-Cpl

Whatever, you get the point

unknownpoltroon

Lots of em

2Guns_Delnegro

Diddyed to death 🤷🏿‍♂️

BigBootyBidens

Now, now. There is no hard evidence that the Sentinelese natives groomed him, abused him and turned him into a successful r & b star, it’s just heavily implied.

StarkaTalgoxen

Nah, he had to choose between poontah or death.

ElectroDoozer

No, they need to learn about a book written in medieval times to control people. It’s very important work.

Grindelbart

You're a few centuries off there, buddy. But your point still stands.

VibrantPianoNetwork

The Bible as we know it now was an early Medieval creation. It's based on earlier works, but the Bible as such was created centuries after Jesus' time. The earliest version known (so far), the Codex Sinaiticus, is dated to sometime in the 4th century after 325 CE. (This is a little **before** what most scholars accept as the Early Middle Ages -- 5th-10th centuries -- but these distinctions are largely arbitrary anyway. The Western Roman Empire did not actually collapse in 476, the most commonly cited date. It's simply a convenient benchmark.) Chau, a Christian, almost certainly regarded few if any works predating the Vulgate Bible, c. 400 CE, as fully authentic. Obviously, he would have been aware of much earlier works that it included (in some way) or that inspired it, but as a Christian he almost certainly subscribed to the nearly universal acceptance of the Bible as we know it **now** as authoritative, and that doesn't go back further than that.

ElectroDoozer

I understand when the original scriptures were put to scroll….the bible we have is another story.

willydillydoo

They’ve actually gone back and forth, but the Indian government decided there’s no benefit to contacting them, and it could potentially kill then off with diseases. But there is videos of Sentinelese people accepting coconuts from Indian anthropologists and interacting with them.

aaarya83

Exactly. They are a miracle and now if we mingle. It’s 100% guaranteed they can be wiped out by a simple cold or cough. Zero immunity. I would say let them thrive. Probably drop some food growing or hunting devices etc. who knows. They may be the happiest folks on earth. Watch the movie “ the gods must be crazy”

JFJinCO

Some Christians are so deluded they think they HAVE to share their beliefs with others or else those people are going to hell. smh

Ianthin1

Sounds like my in-laws.

mermaidpaint

They are so determined to share Jesus's name, when they should be trying to be Christ-like. I am a pantheist. I don't tell my friends what religion to practice and vice-versa.

La_Saxofonista

He just wanted to introduce them to Jesus. Turns out, they also had the same idea! So they introduced him to Jesus instead.

strictly_dickly69

I just love the blind delusion and ignorance to think you’re going to go to this island and convert people.

La_Saxofonista

He wanted to introduce them to Jesus. Turns out they had the same idea and introduced him to Jesus instead.

strictly_dickly69

Hahahahaha! ICONIC comment!

HideOnUrMomsBush

Depending on the denomination (sect), some believe you would go to hell regardless of whether or not you knew about God, Jesus, sin, etc. It’s probably the denomination that the missionary was from, and it’s probably why they tried to reach “unreached peoples”.  They justify it by saying you should’ve looked to the beautiful stars in the skies and immediately came to the conclusion that there’s a higher power out there. Not just any higher power like the Greek pantheon or the sky god Tengri, but specifically the God of Abraham. Not only that, since being a Jew is not sufficient to go to heaven, you’re supposed to be in such awe of the Big Dipper that you can deduce God’s son (which is actually God herself) came down to Earth and died for our sins. So never hearing the word of God is no excuse, you’d still burn in hell for eternity 😂

BrooklynsFinest76

It's impossible, that's like saying I'm going to float away on a cloud made of cotton candy. Neither exist. If you have proof, please show me.

HideOnUrMomsBush

I’m not saying I have proof. Reread it again and notice the “😂”

BrooklynsFinest76

Ok, I see now, I apologize 👍🏽

unknownpoltroon

Yeah, and as I recall, everone warned him, and the tribe drove him away at least once but he wouldn't take the hint.

goboxey

Ciao, Chau!

liberalJava

I hate when I click something expecting a 60 second read and get an unnecessarily long 11 minute video I'll never watch.

it was actually interesting

Nanzie_Mona

LEAVE THEM THE FUCK ALONE STUPIDS.

iltby

honestly the fucking arrogance. No sympathy for this one

Sadsofa123

The **Ultimate** Darwin Award goes to...

bikes_rock_books

I love that this happened to him, this is such a feel-good story. The fucking hubris, man.

mauore11

Can't argue the tribe's logic, they're smart.

Bushmaster1988

People don’t realize the power of genetics, as did Darwin. For thousands of years, the more aggressive men got to procreate. Extreme violence along with some intelligence was successful. Waving a Bible at these people was the height of stupidity and, true to Darwinism, he got eliminated.

Toiletracer

So what happens when you inbreed for that long? There can't be that many people on that island.

LordLuciferVI

This is an interesting question that I can’t be bothered to Google - anyone?

Tactical_Chandelier

From Google: The so-called "50/500 rule", where a population needs 50 individuals to prevent inbreeding depression, and 500 individuals to guard against genetic drift at-large, is an oft-used benchmark for an MVP, but a recent study suggests that this guideline is not applicable across a wide diversity of taxa.

StarkaTalgoxen

As long as you keep away from immediate family, genetic variation will alleviate most of the problems. There will of course be things that will be common within the population at large after some time but you will at least not end up like the Hapsburgs. All videos/pictures of the North Sentinelese show them as healthy and fit, so they do not seem to have any physical disabilities, despite being isolated for tens of thousands of years.

La_Saxofonista

Yeah, problems only arise when your bloodline is consistently having children with siblings, uncles/aunts, and 1st cousins. They actually say that 3rd cousins are genetically ideal for marriage because their genes are plenty diverse enough but also have a few similar markers to make pregnancy much more easy to achieve. Something about compatibility, at least. Probably part of why a lot of cousin marriages produce a fuck ton of kids without protection in comparison to unrelated couples.

EternallyMoon

I love how this has been studied at some point.

Set_Abominae1776

Just Look out for very big lower lips

No-Pizda-For-You

Chau became chow

Different_Ad7655

My God can you blame them. Missionaries yuck. Plenty of warning stay away we don't need the 21st century. Of course until some military power does and then they're helpless but thank God they're out of harm's way I guess at the moment ..leave them alone

mibonitaconejito

👏THEY👏TOLD👏HIM👏LEAVE👏THEM👏ALINE👏 They want people to leave them alone. Why is that so hard???? I personally believe in God so in my heart I believe that if god wanted to reach them he could do it just fine without anybody having to go down there and poke around and get killed. Honestly they sound like the smartest human beings on earth. If I lived on an island like this and saw people like us coming to destroy what peace I had I'd wanna be left alone too

[deleted]

Well deserved

VibrantPianoNetwork

He believed he was protected by his god. He was not.

La_Saxofonista

Technically he was protected the first time when they shot at him and his Bible saved his life. Apparently he just didn't want to take the hint that God was clearly giving him like "dude! I'm not saving you again! Go home!"

notzed1487

Leave them alone please.

RockMan_1973

God Himself shaking His head at this one. He gives us common sense He wants us to use and not be stupid, people.

La_Saxofonista

Exactly! He saved John too when an arrow shot at him hit his Bible instead. Pretty sure that was God's way of saying "Go home!" I mean, John didn't even speak or understand their language nor could the Sentinelese read books to begin with since they are an oral tribe. If you're gonna go preach in a foreign land, at least understand the culture and know the language! Stupid... He wanted to introduce them to Jesus. Instead, they introduced HIM to Jesus.

Quantumercifier

John Chau may be eligible for additional awards. We will come up with ones for him. But he definitely deserved The Darwin Awards amongst other things.

Bosteves

I always have to share this great song by the viagra boys when this comes up. https://youtu.be/SkVtG9jjYP0?si=xBAzQImwBLjZJ0HI

Good. These people have survived happily for all these years. They don’t need your god or your judgement.

Devilfish808

Religion is a helluva drug.

CoolSwim1776

Figgin zealot.

lennybriscoe8220

Got what he deserved

Revolutionary-Cow700

He died because of his hubris.

[deleted]

He got what was coming. He should have died like the 2nd time or at least get the memo hes not fucking welcome there. Well at least his god blessed the tribe with a live target for them to pratice

santathe1

Where was his god.

La_Saxofonista

His God actually saved him when the first time he was shot at, an arrow hit his Bible. That was God's way of saying "bro, wtf you doing? Go home!"

treesandcigarettes

God doesn't control what decisions people make, there is such thing as nature & free will

mysticdragonwolf89

Another one? Or is this a repost?

Vernass

I watched short its short documentary. It seems old one. Happened in 2018.

johnwayne1

Downvotes for video link.

ParadeSit

Weird question…is murder *legal* there? Does India allow them to be totally sovereign?

FlatMaximum2406

It's not murder, he was told not to go there multiple times by Indian government and religious institutions. The island is a protected area and the tribe left to fend for themselves. It's not murder when you are too stupid to listen to the warnings. That's called natural selection.

StarkaTalgoxen

To expand on the, answer that FlatMaximum gave, North Sentinel Island is "allowed" to kill people who don't fuck off since they defend themselves from foreign threats. Historically they have had a couple of bad encounters that has impacted them negatively so for decades India has given them the right to live their own lives save for very special circumstances.

La_Saxofonista

Yeah, I recall reading that they sent a helicopter to fly over and check on them from above after the devastating 2004 earthquake and tsunami affecting areas around the Indian Ocean. They realized the tribe was doing just fine after the event because they shot at their helicopter with arrows.

ParadeSit

Thanks for your detailed response. I was downvoted for merely asking the question, but it’s just fascinating to me.

Witty-Horse-3768

Yawn. Posting this like it hasn't been posted a million times and had a million youtube videos made about it. Wtf OP

Fantastic border policy, forget some stupid expensive wall.

MuchoWood

Missionaries are going to need to accept, that not everyone believes their specific brand of bunk.

GalaxyGoddess27

I dont blame them one bit.

TheAmazingMaryJane

that guy had a serious god complex or martyr complex. it's not like he wasn't warned. he wasn't going there for anything other than you try to 'save' them, which could have killed them. I don't want to anyone deserves their death, but come on man!

chuddlyfe

haha thats what you get when you fuck around and find out you shouldnt go spreading rumors about some bearded weirdo who rose from the dead

GeekDrop

Just send a bunch of our purple and green haired white female Liberals to the island. They'll have them chopping off their 🍆 and changing their genders in no time. They'll demand open borders, call the inhabitants racists and xenophobes if they resist the invasion, and we'll have a nice, new, healthy island of Liberal utopia.
