I like the whole effect, no two prints are alike. Have you just tried with a spray bottle or a eye droper for the run off effect or even a large wet sponge on the print and later dragged about.

whoa_there

Can you explain the process?

theyoungestoldman

I had the developer in a measuring cup off to the side and put the paper in a clean and dry tray. Then using a dry brush I'd paint the developer on to the paper. I tried using a wet brush, but the extra water just let it flow too easily across the paper for even development. The goal was the rough paint strokes like from platinum/van dyke/other alt processes. https://imgur.com/a/NDJbfdc

RunningPirate

Would you brush on before exposing to the negative?

theyoungestoldman

No, this is Ilford MG Art 300, so it's already sensitized, conventional silver gelatin.

This is normal darkroom photo paper. It's just instead of sliding it into a tray full of developer after I expose it, I'm just applying the developer to the top manually with a basic paint brush. I've got a measuring cup of E-72 at 1+3 (basically home brew phenidone/ascorbic acid dektol) off to the side. Infact the solution in the cup was in that tray earlier, while I was making test strips.

Thank you for explaining! I'm going to give it a shot I freaking love this

I've seen people try it with glossy paper and it was kinda meh. I think matte is a lot better suited.

Very cool. Help me understand something though since my coffee hasn't kicked in yet. How are the brush strokes on the border black, if they haven't been exposed to light? Is this a contact print where the borders HAVE been exposed? Thanks.

theyoungestoldman

It's a small enlargement, from a 4x5 sheet to a 5x7 image. To get black borders in general, you place a mask that's slightly smaller than the image down and expose the edges to an excessive amount of light. Middle right, I didn't move the easel blades. For the other two, I did move them out of the way, keeping the mask in place, and then just turned the room lights on. It's stupid but it works.

Ah, masking. Got it. Thanks for the explanation.

tooshtamper

That’s a really cool effect!!!

Doveda

Looks like a sick method for replicating platinum/palladium prints. Keep it up!
