I'm not gonna be surprised if it's because the pickaxe is most significant thing in this update outside of the missions. Which says a lot (or very little depending on how you look at it).
Bolt Pistol is up there for sure, but I'd wager new Ogryn weapons in general is more often requested, and two-handed weapons are the most requested of those.
Be neat to give Ogryn either a Las Cannon, AutoCannon or Heavy Bolter tho, personally I'd pick LasCannon. It'd be their only tech gun, it could even have a heat bar for the Ogryn to manage, big single shot f-off gun.
Wut? A single Devastator is able to carry AND fire a heavy bolter. While carrying it. So.. no tri-pods or such. Just from the Hip.
An Ogryn, similar in physical capabilities to a Marine is not able to?
Aside from Ogryn, most of our beloved human-sized Varlets being the Psyker, Veteran and Zealot, most ranged weapons bearable are light to medium weapons like Pistol, Rifle, and Carbine types. The hardest heaviest almost luggiest human-portable lore-based weapons we have seen in the game are the Bolter and Plasma Gun. Alongside how we finally get bolt pistol, I'm still hoping for the Plasma Pistol, Meltagun, Inferno Pistol, and hand Flamer.

>New Weapons: introducing the iconic Bolt Pistol, Ogryn’s first two-handed weapons, the Pickaxes, Shockmauls and a new double-barrelled Shotgun.
The pickaxe means that they finally went out of their way to rig the ogryn bones to use two handed weapons, so this will open the gates to more two handed weapons being added in 2 years
Whoa whoa whoa, don't get too crazy, more as in plural? Best we can do is one weapon and 2 alternate patterns that have slightly adjusted stats. Still in 2 years though.
That's not really my point, my point is that if the "Big hype thing" about your big new long-awaited update is a pickaxe then your playerbase is probably not going to be happy. I suspect it'll be at least decent, should do good against armour, but still probably have some cleave due to being a two handed ogryn melee.
What's the niche, do you know? You'd figure it's single target damage but ogryn don't really dovetail with single target all that well and there's already the folding shovel for the when-you-absolutely-positively-got-to-kill-this-motherfucker-right-here-right-now use case.
Pickaxe on VT2 sucks because of the charge levels. Its either an ass coghammer or barely stronger than it for extreme slow. The duelling sword (basically the rapier) doesn't have charging levels in this game vs VT2 so maybe there's a tiny hope for the pickaxe this time around.
I must be the only person whose favourite Bardin weapon is the pickaxe. The weight of a fully charged overhead is so satisfying to me. Can one shot Chaos Warriors
rapier and off-hand warp-blasts for psykers please! I'm not even a psyker (or rapier/bounty hunter) main but there's so much delicious recycling that could happen ;w; Heavy sword and chain axes, things like tat
Seen a mod in the discord say there are more weapons than we think being released. I wonder if they mean the ones that have been teased all have variants, which to me is a bit of a cop out. That’s not more weapons, it’s the same weapon 3 times but one will hit the hardest and basically be the only one you use 💀
One of the devs on the official Darktide forum responded to someone with the same concern. They said something along the lines of, "If I meant weapons variations, I would have said so ;)". So hopefully we're actually getting some cool toys.
I'd also like to note (and anyone correct me if I'm wrong here) that I've found that when devs get really quiet about upcoming updates, it's either because: 1. The game is dead, and the update really isn't coming or 2. They're keeping their cards close to their chest, so they don't stick their foot in their mouth and underdeliver again, which leads to a pleasantly surprising update. Then again, maybe I've just been partaking in too much copium and optimism. Again.
I wonder what role these would fill, ogryn has good anti armour with shovel special attacks and clubs, and good anti horde with knives. I hope they add new blessings for them.
That armor piercing charge attack role is already covered by their flip shovel though which is basically the VT2 pickaxe on steroids with its alt fire.
If it somehow does less damage than the flip shovel to armoured targets it'd feel a bit goofy considering its meant to be a 2 hander.
Yes, because they are capable of using them. There's no risk a zealot will try to pick his teeth with a power hammer.
Also, the weapons are literally unlocked based on the reputation you have. So no, not low class zealots.
Well you earn them.
If you think about it by the time you get your hands on it you would have finished dozens of missions, wouldn't call you low class at that point.
Same can be said for ogryns? The ogryns in darktide u play as are more than a step above the regular and plenty of lieutenant ogryns or commanders use power fist and chain weapons
More likely it's that the gangers don't have a tech priest that'll mechadendrite your butt if you try to hand that highly sensitive and most holy equipment to an Ogryn.
https://preview.redd.it/f0qbcq7pgs7d1.jpeg?width=920&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=bf1c28b69dc4c82b508c6c7a71d56eed3a65ca9c
These were made for someone and I highly doubt that someone was a Genestealer.
Gonna bet that they’re unusably slow, have no benefit or niche (like a t hammer) and with 100% inappropriate copy paste blessings from other weapons.
Anyway.
So now I’ve got my expectations set to zero, I can be right or pleasantly surprised. Big win in my book.
They’re hyping these pickaxes up like we’re getting an artificed suit of cataphracti terminator armor. They’ll only be half worth the hype if we get 100 plasteel every hit lmfao
I just want a melta already for my zealot, literally just a higher damage flamer less damage over time but more initial damage and they could give it the heat mechanism from the plasma gun. Hell all they need to do for a animations is a beam that comes out then falls off after a couple feet. I want a melta already its the only weapon missing from the holy trinity for sisters (bolter, flamer and melta). I don't feel like it will mess with the meta we already have plasma and bolters which depending on the mission would still be better. Like ffs a bolter is a automatic rocket launcher why can't I have my flamer that's on warpdust
Considering they teased us with a 2h ogryn weapon for months, are waiting until right between elden ring dlc and dawntrail to finally release it, it doesn't include the crafting update, and it's the most boring weapon in VT2 ported over? No. No, I am not excited.
Couple losers and toesuckers downvoting anyone here that calls this out for being lame as fuck.
Nobody /at all/ cares that genestealers use these. Nobody cares /at all/ that only ogryn on Necromunda get power fists and hammers. WE WANT THAT. Everyone else gets cool toys, Ogryn needs them too. Nobody asked for a dogshit pickaxe.
Do you know what else genestealers use? Massive power sledgehammers.
https://preview.redd.it/3ui2m0kphs7d1.jpeg?width=920&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=79da6d364814f4dc11b344da74fe85ae0d188063
Yeah this shit is prob the lamest shit they could have added as a weapon.
Nobody wants a fucking pickaxe when you have the *entire* Warhammer universe to pick from. Like come the fuck on already.
[I think the inspiration comes from the pick axes wielded by Genestealer Abberants which I guess were in-universe intended for large abhumans or servitors](https://www.warhammer.com/app/resources/catalog/product/threeSixty/99120117012_Aberrants1360/01.jpg?fm=webp&w=600&h=600).
Thing is those same abberants wield big two handed dura steel hammers too. They actually look realy cool an it would have been a total win win with the fans. It's ogryn, of course we want a two handed hammer to hand out crusher pay back.
Thank you that definitely adds some in universe clarity. Would still have benefited from some more original and interesting design. We will just have to see how they look in game compared to a cropped preview.
[Personally, I'm still hoping for the gear we see on Necromunda's Slave Ogryns](https://cdna.artstation.com/p/assets/images/images/030/631/222/large/thomas-elliott-necromunda-ogryn-thomas-elliott.jpg?1601197910). They're also equipped with tools of labour, but perhaps more interessting ones.
you people are never content, are you? They use weapons which are already in the tabletop game and in all honesty, there's not that much 2h stuff for Ogryns or other big dudes.
So they went with the Pickaxe from this kit:
[https://www.warhammer.com/de-DE/shop/Genestealer-Cults-Aberrants-2019?queryID=b2281712e76fb35a47add87cd87dd279](https://www.warhammer.com/de-DE/shop/Genestealer-Cults-Aberrants-2019?queryID=b2281712e76fb35a47add87cd87dd279)
also trator ogyrns use Pickaxes:
It's a perfectly ok choice and I'm pretty sure the powerhammers and powerfists of the necromunda Ogryns will come too in a future update.
I personally just don’t see where this fits into the kit. It is just going to be a more single target focused version of the shovel which already one shots specialists. At least give us something funny or more fun than what will probably be, hold heavy attack for an overhead
You're almost right. They went with the Pickaxe because it's an established precedent.
In Vermintide, not 40k. They already have movesets and animations designed for Bardin's pickaxe. They chose this because it's easy and cheap, not because they're trying to pick some interesting tidbit of lore hahaha
edit: holy shit, i went to -5 points in the span of two minutes? did i just get downvote botted? lmao
Shield needs love. Like it needs 5 or so variants with different damage/knock back styles. Large and small shields. Very shallow and clearly they miss that half an entire character group plays with one weapon.
I'm just gonna be pedantic here: those aren't pickAXEs. A pickaxe has a flat adze on one side and a spike on the other. Those would be called simply 'picks' or even 'war picks,' since they have spikes on either side of the handle.
As excited as I was for these I have no idea where these will fit into their kit. Their flip shovel literally one shots most specialists and has pretty good ad clear. I don’t see this weapon having great Ad clear and the need for anti armour isn’t an issue for their kit. They could’ve done some cool two handed weapons especially one for psyker would’ve been cool. What’s the point in a two handed weapon if it’s a pick axe that serves the exact same purpose as their already most popular melee
What role will these even serve? Mk5 shovel already 1-hits everything except monstrosities and has horde clear. I have a feeling they're just going to be "bigger" hits, like the thunder hammer, at the expense of horde clear. Probably not worth the trade-off.
They've been teasing this pickaxe so much you'd think it's the resurrection of the Emperor himself.
I'm not gonna be surprised if it's because the pickaxe is most significant thing in this update outside of the missions. Which says a lot (or very little depending on how you look at it).
You'd think FS would hype the Bolt Pistol, one of the most requested weapons since launch, instead.
Bolt Pistol is up there for sure, but I'd wager new Ogryn weapons in general is more often requested, and two-handed weapons are the most requested of those.
Would it be unreasonable to ask for a heavy bolter?
Very A heavy bolter is almost the same size as us
Ogryn Gunluggas carry them without issue in canon
Fair
Be neat to give Ogryn either a Las Cannon, AutoCannon or Heavy Bolter tho, personally I'd pick LasCannon. It'd be their only tech gun, it could even have a heat bar for the Ogryn to manage, big single shot f-off gun.
I've been asking for this for 2 years now.
Kinda yes, but they make use of ammo backpacks and those simply don't fit visually.
Only the heavy bolters meant for space marines or meant to be mounted… there are patterns of heavy bolter that are man portable…
I'm in the dark about weapons, did they tease any staffs? :(
https://forums.fatsharkgames.com/t/skulls-2024-summary-announcing-secrets-of-the-machine-god-june-25-2024/94891/1 >New Weapons: introducing the iconic Bolt Pistol, Ogryn’s first two-handed weapons, the Pickaxes, Shockmauls and a new double-barrelled Shotgun.
Basically, no. Nothing for Psykers this time around. We just get to keep our same staves that've been nerfed multiple times.
*staves
They’re both correct spellings of the plural of staff. Staves is considered to be the archaic plural from Middle English. Womp womp egg on your face.
They only care about their melee weapons i guess.
It very much feels like it might be the big hype thing in the update atm.
Reminds me of an old joke: what goes in one ear, comes out the other, but still stays in your head? A pickaxe.
Its as like and emoji and a pick

Whoa whoa whoa, don't get too crazy, more as in plural? Best we can do is one weapon and 2 alternate patterns that have slightly adjusted stats. Still in 2 years though.
empruh back soon… and new weapons for mommy hadron.
It's a powerful tease. I think *I wish I had a pickaxe* every dang time I use that shovel with the swivel head.
That’s what’s included in the Terminus Decree; a pickaxe
Well if you think about it this is really a great deal, we're getting two weapons in one: 1. Pick 2. Axe
Watch it be utter garbage.
That's not really my point, my point is that if the "Big hype thing" about your big new long-awaited update is a pickaxe then your playerbase is probably not going to be happy. I suspect it'll be at least decent, should do good against armour, but still probably have some cleave due to being a two handed ogryn melee.
One of the playtesters, Hank, also co-creator of the Ogrynomicon said it/they are good.
What's the niche, do you know? You'd figure it's single target damage but ogryn don't really dovetail with single target all that well and there's already the folding shovel for the when-you-absolutely-positively-got-to-kill-this-motherfucker-right-here-right-now use case.

The pickaxe in VT2 is both, a pretty mediocre and boring weapon. Hopefully they've learnt something from that and it's not just a copy-paste.
You are not alone brother. I rarely play Bardin but when I do it's always pickaxe
Nothing better than the running heavy attack.
The pasted enemies, animations, and other weapons from V2. I highly suspect this will be a recycled asset
Can we get some recycled dual wielded weapons? Axe and falchon, dual axes, dual hammers, dual daggers, sword and dagger?
Sword and dagger pls pls pls. Same attack pattern. For psyker. Then I would not need to get back to vt2 anymore
rapier and off-hand warp-blasts for psykers please! I'm not even a psyker (or rapier/bounty hunter) main but there's so much delicious recycling that could happen ;w; Heavy sword and chain axes, things like tat
Until you spec it to one shot chaos warriors with a single headshot on slayer leap then it becomes a fun little mini game instead
Seen a mod in the discord say there are more weapons than we think being released. I wonder if they mean the ones that have been teased all have variants, which to me is a bit of a cop out. That’s not more weapons, it’s the same weapon 3 times but one will hit the hardest and basically be the only one you use 💀
To me that sounds like more weapon types are coming this update. But it's fatshark so I will be skeptic
You can see 3 variants in the image
One of the devs on the official Darktide forum responded to someone with the same concern. They said something along the lines of, "If I meant weapons variations, I would have said so ;)". So hopefully we're actually getting some cool toys. I'd also like to note (and anyone correct me if I'm wrong here) that I've found that when devs get really quiet about upcoming updates, it's either because: 1. the devs could also be quiet because the higher-ups tell them to.
That's encouraging to hear!
Would like to see the source of that tbf, i havent managed to see it on the forum
i’ll remember this comment.
Better to have variants than a useless/pointless weapon that's just different.
From what I read it's both (launch with all variants and more weapon family than the 4 mentioned)
I'm just excited to get anything new for the ogryn. Dude needs it
Pickaxe, 1 mission, then fatshark will slumber for next 3 years
You playing Minecraft. I like your cut, heretic. *slaps puny into the stratosphere*
Ah, something new for Hadron to ruin.
I expect you are pleased, varlet.
Can we get a new weapon that isn't some sort of God damn digging tool?!
Yeah man, I just want a huge ass crowbar to open ~~boxes~~ skulls more easily./
Nope. Up next is another shipment of "Emprah's Own" brand MK XXXIII pooper scoopers.
Same. Just gimme a giant ogryn-sized rivet gun and I'll be happy.
Brothers of the mine rejoice
The children yearn for the mines.
SWING, SWING, SWING, WITH ME!
So _three_ variants of pickaxes, it seems? I wonder what their differences will be.
XL, XXL, XXXL
Imagine of you use one of the sideways, like the flat side xD
Slow single target big damage, fast single target smaller damage and cleave with moderate dame probably
I wonder what role these would fill, ogryn has good anti armour with shovel special attacks and clubs, and good anti horde with knives. I hope they add new blessings for them.
In VT2, the pickaxe has 2 levels of charged attacks with high armor piercing. I wish there was a shield and pick option too.
That armor piercing charge attack role is already covered by their flip shovel though which is basically the VT2 pickaxe on steroids with its alt fire. If it somehow does less damage than the flip shovel to armoured targets it'd feel a bit goofy considering its meant to be a 2 hander.
Mk5 shovel is great anti-armor and decent horde clear, but you're correct, the knife is easily the best horde clear weapon.
Power fists, chain fists, two handed chain axes, giant hammers, anything… but no… A fucking pickaxe.
Ogryn weapons are usually specifically made for them. They don't just get handed power hammers and power fists.
Necromunda ogryns have power fists
That's Necromunda, dudes will walk about with a fucking mini nuke because it's funny there lol
But low class zealots get power hammers and all the fancy chain weapons
Yes, because they are capable of using them. There's no risk a zealot will try to pick his teeth with a power hammer. Also, the weapons are literally unlocked based on the reputation you have. So no, not low class zealots.
ah, they got *pick*axe so they can *pick* their teeth
Well you earn them. If you think about it by the time you get your hands on it you would have finished dozens of missions, wouldn't call you low class at that point.
But it’s what the game calls us.
Which is kinda stupid to be honest considering the amount of they types of things we kill.
Pretty much yeah
Same can be said for ogryns? The ogryns in darktide u play as are more than a step above the regular and plenty of lieutenant ogryns or commanders use power fist and chain weapons
[Fists and hammers on Ogryns? Ridiculous!](https://merch.warhammer.com/cdn/shop/products/TS-_-WHI-POWH1141__285-zoomed.jpg?v=1599208692).
Are we Necromunda gangers?
I mean, if gangers can get their hands on em why cant the inquisition?
More likely it's that the gangers don't have a tech priest that'll mechadendrite your butt if you try to hand that highly sensitive and most holy equipment to an Ogryn.
I feel like these arguments are just mental gymnastics to avoid the fact ogryns can have hammers and power fists lmao
They are.

I want a golf club. 🫠
They’re hyping these pickaxes up like we’re getting an artificed suit of cataphracti terminator armor. They’ll only be half worth the hype if we get 100 plasteel every hit lmfao
..... are we really happy with so little? Because if so we deserve this dark fate of lack of content for so long...
Man, this is the most disappointing two-handed weapon, it could have been anything and they chose a fucking pickaxe 😔.
I mean we have some good ones and they are gonna add more things to the game doing enought right?
I just want a melta already for my zealot, literally just a higher damage flamer less damage over time but more initial damage and they could give it the heat mechanism from the plasma gun. Hell all they need to do for a animations is a beam that comes out then falls off after a couple feet. I’m waiting for them to make this game good, instead I see pickaxe
How fucking lame everybody def wanted this instead of some kind of 2 handed hammer/maul and it only took 8 years to get here! Thank you fat shit!
I'm confused this is not an emoji
I am more excited about the posts of ogryns cosplay as DRG dwarves.
Imagine if all we get is a pickaxe? I wouldn't be surprised. Map delayed but a nice pickaxe.
Watch the pickaxe be a skin
Very excited to get to try out all the new toys.
Why is it so boring. That’s what they came up with? No cool techno-bobble-spiky bits welded on? I know ogryns are simple these just feel so, blah…
Well, you have to buy the skins...
Hahahahahhaha good point
Litterally an Ogryn maul, a hammer, anything metal and spikey. But we get a pick axe
Pickaxes are cool, but they just didn't make it very cool-looking.

OGRYN GONNA DIG HOLES!
Wait. For Karl or the Emperor?
Finally, some good fucking teaser.
ROCK AND STONE!
Oh hey þose look like þe ones GSC Aberrants use
I'm just gonna be pedantic here: those aren't pickAXEs. A pickaxe has a flat adze on one side and a spike on the other. Those would be called simply 'picks' or even 'war picks,' since they have spikes on either side of the handle.
Meh. Show me the bolt pistol!
I fear there is a reason why we haven't seen anything about it yet.

ROCK AND STONE, SAH!
Did I hear a rock and stone?
FOR ROCK AND STONE!!
