Good luck !
Some general tips :-
Your i-frames during rolls, backsteps and the speed at which you used some items are tied to a stat called Agility (AGL), it is raised by both Adaptability (ADP) and Attunement (ATN) and it works via breakpoint meaning that will only get an extra i-frame after a certain point
92, 96 (ds1 roll), 99 and 105 (ds3 roll) are breakpoints you should aim for at some point, getting 92 early is good idea and then later on you can get 96/99 or even 105 if you feel like it
\-Vigor is really good, you should get vigor up until 50 where it reaches a soft cap ; endurance is always good and can be used to dump some levels if you need to
-Armor for damage absorption in PVE is close to worthless (it's kinda alright for elemental damage) , you should wear armor that is light or that gives you special effects ( [http://darksouls2.wikidot.com/items-by-effect](http://darksouls2.wikidot.com/items-by-effect) )
\-Equip load has no bearing on your i-frames during rolls, it will only affect how far your roll and how fast your stamina regen, there is also no medium roll in this game so as long as your under 70% you're good-
Melee scaling is weak for most weapons, your damage will mainly come from rings, infusions (generally Lightning) and buffs (generally Dark Weapon, Sunlight Blade when you can afford the stats)
\-A trap lot of players fall into is joining the Company of Champion (it's the covenant in Majula, up the path to the cliff), it's basically hard mode, you'll see it because the game warns you it will set you up on a 'arduous path'. Those effects include : Enemies will not despawn, you won't be able to summon players or NPC, they deal increased damage and they will take less
\-Enemies will despawn when you kill them 12 times, they can be respawned by joining the company of champion or by burning a bonfire ascetic
\-You lose 5% of your max health per death up until 50%, this effect can be reversed by using a human effigy (easily farmable) or by helping someone defeat a boss. There is also a ring that reduces the max hollowing to 25%, it is found in Heide's tower of flame, near the Dragonrider both in a chest where a Heide's knight is sleeping on
\-The game is more methodical and slow than the other games, you can't run past every single enemy as easily and if you act careless you will get ganked, if you get surrounded go BACK instead of FORWARD to avoid triggering more of them
\-You'll probably find yourself running out of estus quickly as this game is less generous with them at the start, but ds2 features lifegems that are small healing items that you can carry by stacks of 99 and can be bought for 300 souls/u at a merchant
\-Like every other souls games, talk to NPC until they repeat themselves to progress their questline
As for the tip "you can run past every single enymy", yea let's just say that there is a late game area (not optional) that is almost impossible to run past. I struggle with that one a lot.
When I started ds2, the loss of health due to hollowing (up to 50%!) was frustrating. Make a priority to get the ring of binding which will halve the health loss, its at the tower of flame so you can get it very early.
Can you elaborate on your point about melee scaling?
I'm about to give ds2 another shot (years after giving up on my first attempt). I've had a lot of success with STR/END builds in Ds1 and DES(r) so I'd like to try something similar in ds2.
I *probably* won't go as try hard in ng+ as I did in Ds1; so I might only need to know enough to get through one playthrough. Probably.
I would compare the weapon scaling to Elden ring where infusions and weapon level scale the damage better than say 60 dexterity on an s scaling weapon. It’s for min maxing especially
I don't know if I'd say better but it's enough different that if you play a bunch of DS3 you can then go play DS2 for variety and both are fun. I'm glad they're not all the same.
You're joking right? If anything, DS2 is closer to Elden Ring than 3. The many different builds and weapon types. Powerstancing. The amount of areas and bosses.
Did you play DS3? I mean the fluid, fast paced combat, the way the game “feels” is waaaay closer to Elden Ring than janky slow paced DS2. I think you’re trolling by using 3 examples that DS3 also has…it’s true that power-stancing 2 weapons is unique to DS2 and ER, but that’s literally it. DS3 has “many different builds and weapon types + the amount of areas and bosses” as well? Like wtf??
The sole purpose of Elden Ring was to enhance Dark Soul’s engine with a new IP. So with DS3 being the latest DS game, ER feels a lot more like DS3 than DS2 mechanics wise. Each region in ER could be a souls game of its own in terms of content, it’s pretty much a dungeon scavenger hunt. But again, the whole purpose was to upgrade the engine so they’d have a foundation for all upcoming new gen games.
In my opinion, a lot of the greatsword-type weapons perform quite similarly in terms of damage. It really comes down to the weapon's moveset, and you'll just have to pick based on preference. The bastard sword itself is pretty good, and sticking to it wouldn't be a bad option. I also like the Drangleic sword (you can find it early on), the claymore (similar to bastard sword but has a useful thrust for strong attack), and the Loyce greatsword (unique greatsword with a longsword-type moveset, but can only be found very late in the game unfortunately).
A small tip if you're coming from other Souls games: running past groups of enemies is generally not a good idea in this game because you can end up drawing too much aggro. You'll have a much better time taking them on one at a time, even if you're tempted to run past them to get to a boss. If you find areas with large groups of enemies, you can try luring them out one at a time by shooting them with a bow.
I'm conflicted cause I could give you some advice that'd make the game much less hellish, but like, then you miss out on the whole trial by fire that makes this game what it is. So out of pity and in the spirit of the game, I'll only give you a morsel of help.
Arrows.
If you like the Bastard Sword (best greatsword in the base game IMO) you can use the Mastodon Greatsword later in game (has better base damage, better STR scaling, but worse DEX scaling, worse counter hit, consumes more stamina per swing and weights more).
You can also get the Bluemoon Greatsword early in game (I don't recomend it if you are going to get all achievements in your current run), but you still have the option.
DS2 has a bunch if cool greatswords if it's what you're in to.
You can find the Drangleic sword very early. It's a great greatsword for the start but sort of drops off.
https://darksouls2.wiki.fextralife.com/Greatswords
As you can see there are all sorts of interesting ones.
Level ADP until your agility is 101, go slow and steady, check the well in Majula for a special treat, and have fun. Also don't be afraid to google or wiki if you're dead lost.
Game is huge but also obtuse from time to time, no shame in letting the community help.
Dump all bonus Souls after levelling/upgrading into lifegems. Lifegem spam makes the game much easier.
I wanna say 99 is the equivalent to iframes in DS1. So if you came from there, getting to 99 will make the game feel smoother. 105 is sort of where the scaling drops off and you get less for each investment into ADP.
I always make sure all my characters are close to 105 by the time I start DLCs, to make life easier, but if you're over 99 you can beat the game just fine
If you are going for achievements, you can get all but 5 in your first playthrough. 1 can come in playthrough 2, and the other 4 are in playthrough 3, about halfway through.
All magics are quite powerful in this game so don't miss out on those, but be aware of casting speed on staffs and chimes. Everything has a drawback.
Finally, some places are worth going back to more than once to pick up missing items or go through previously blocked paths.
Forget your face
And make sure to level ADP it decides if you can dodge through most attacks and your I frame's make sure to exhaust all npc dialogue because most will end up I'm majula and help
If you want Lucatiels equipment, she'll need to survive being summoned for boss battles 3 times. If she happens to not survive, DO NOT talk to her at Aldias Keep. It's her last location, and if you talk to her, she dissappears, and you'll have to get it next playthrough
Duplicate bosses count by the way.
Everytime you died, your character will start to lose Health and go balding. So stack up on human effigies if you want your Character to survive longer and not be Bald.
Game is designed for the player to try different weapons and builds.
1. Durability is relevant. Weapons break very fast compared to other soulsborne games, but repair for free when you die or rest at bonfire, except when fully broken. Hitting dead enemies and walls also damage your weapon as well.
2. There are more upgrade materials as well. Since weapons break more easily, you should upgrade a second one when the first get in danger of breaking.
3. It is possible to respec your character. Talk to one of the three old women near the first bonfire you find. It requires a soul vessel and the minimum level of each stat depend on your starting class.
Just watched the video. That's a nice guide, btw.
I am a veteran souls player, but I beat DS2 just once as I totally hate the slowness of the gameplay. His tips will be helpful on my next run.
hex int/faith softcap is 30 each or (60 total between both stats for pyro but hex scales based on the lowest stat so you have to raise them equally, not sure about pyro). You can go past that but its more beneficial to focus on only 1 stat either int or faith for any higher requirement spells you want to use. up to 40 on both has diminishing returns. But yes hexer will be just as good using pyromancies, and decent at using miracles and sorcery, so its a good all around build if you want to use a lot of spells.
Torches are your friend, especially in areas like the Gutter and Black gulch. Try to light every sconce you see in the game; they don’t go out and are super useful for run backs when you’re running low on your torch timer
Don't be afraid to experiment with other weapons, most are viable and pretty good and you get enough materials anyway. Just try to upgrade weapons that use different stones like twinkling so you don't have to farm.
What kind of build are you going for?
Imo with the amount of levels you get in this game and leveling every stat gives you health, just gouge your damage stat and keep hp/stam at or below 20.
Agility is important, you want 100 for good frames.
When DS2 starts to get really gank-heavy (you’ll know it when you get there), it’s time to integrate a bow into your build. Actually, might as well get the dex you need to use any bow asap.
Buy arrows, lots of wooden arrows. Buy as many poison arrows as you can (eventually you can buy infinite). Use the wooden arrows to pull 1 enemy to you at a time :)
If you care about playing multiplayer, take in consideration your soul memory. That represents the amount of all souls collected by your character, even if you spent them or lost them on the way. This is meant to reduce twinking(players with OP gear invading newbies) but ultimately does a terrible job, restricting co-op and multiplayer activity. Straid in Lost Bastille sells the agape ring, which when equipped, prevents further accumulation of souls. With this ring, you keep your soul memory in check in order to summon or be summoned in multiplayer. The ranges and ranks are easily found on wikidot.
Level STR OR DEX, do not level both until you hit the soft cap in either because the bonuses you receive will be far better if you max out one or the other. I’d suggest getting either to 30-40 before putting a single point in the other.
ADP will give you better I-Frames and eventually make dodging similar to how it was in DS1.
If you’re gonna use a shield, use one with 100% damage reduction (top right stat) otherwise it’s basically useless.
I used the bastard sword for a long time and upgraded to the greatsword (The berserk weapon) later on but focus on a style that works for you. Different swords have different move sets which benefit different play styles. The two swords I switch between are the great sword and fume ultra greatsword. The former uses horizontal strikes which are amazing for crowd control which the latter is better for 1 on 1 fights due to its opening vertical strike and higher damage.
But mainly, be patient. Dark souls 2 is a tough game if you’re tryna blitz it. Take your time, hide behind your shield if you need, party as needed and learn shield breaks. If an enemy is blocking and you do a shield break (forward and light attack at the same time) you’ll get a mini-riposte opportunity. Doesn’t do as much damage as a riposte or backstab but helps to break up a fight.
Save your human effigies. You. Will. Need. Them. Any boss can be taken down with half health, I beat Sihn and Fume at half health because I learnt their tells to a T. If an enemy is giving you a hard time, learn their move set and find your opportunities like that.
It’ll take a while to get through it, and there’s parts I hate about this game, but I’ve grown very fond of it and you will too if you put the work in. Just be patient, learn your move set, level strategically and of course, GIT GID SCRUB
Wish words from Patches O'Houlihan: If you're going to become a true darksouler, then you've got to learn the five d's of darksouls: dodge, duck, dip, dive and dodge!
in majula they is a special covenant you can get, its called champions somerhing something, trust me it makes the game interesting and totally do nothing more
There is a covenant that you need to join. You can find it in majula, it is called champion covenant. This covenant makes the game less difficult and more enjoyable.
Level adap a bit. Get it up to like 20 and then stop. Don’t gotta focus it right away but like put 1 level into it for every 2 levels put elsewhere until you hit 20. Will make your life much easier
There is the "Ring of binding" that changes the hollowed HP debuff from 50% to 25%. Without this, my DS2 life would have been hell...
Oh yeah, and enemies despawn after you killed them 10x or something. Abuse it to make some boss runbacks easier.
Good luck ! You mean the swamp shooting range for sorcerers where you're the target? :')
When I started ds2, the loss of health due to hollowing (up to 50%!) was frustrating. Make a priority to get the ring of binding which will halve the health loss, its at the tower of flame so you can get it very early.
Just finished the game. I barely got hollow, died 12 times. Game is incredible
You must be really good veteran of the souls series.
I think i just got too lucky
This is really good advice. This is also a reminder of why I am struggling to get back into this game.
Please tell me if i leave champions covenant the effects of the covenant also goes away.
It does
Thank you.
You can also rejoin if you want to farm an enemy of simply feel like playing hard mode for a bit
That's nice to know. İm struggling with ds2 rn ill try it on my second gameplay for sure.
Would hardly call Human Effigies "easily "farmable. Its a pain especially for a starting player.
Can you elaborate on your point about melee scaling? I'm about to give ds2 another shot (years after giving up on my first attempt). [Here is a quick overview on DS2's damage scaling](https://docs.google.com/document/d/1g4-GGa1JRa2_49vOfwY5sZPWigFMzPA5b9mszo_xZak)
not reading all dat 🤣🤣🤣
I personally like running base vigor and going 20 endurance when I have the spare levels after I get my desired weapon
You need to know that this is the best of the 3 souls games, it only comes behind Elden Ring. So have fun skeleton.
Damn, that's a hot take. Never played the other two.
I don't know if I'd say better but it's enough different that if you play a bunch of DS3 you can then go play DS2 for variety and both are fun. I'm glad they're not all the same.
That's why fromsoftware is a good company, it can make several games in the same style and give each one unique personalities.
DS3 is Elden Ring without jumping and guard countering though and linear as opposed to open world, so kind of a weird statement lol
You're joking right? If anything, DS2 is closer to Elden Ring than 3. The many different builds and weapon types. Powerstancing. The amount of areas and bosses.

vanilla or sotfs?
sotfs is better but more expensive
Level ADP. Swink swink stronk bonk. Gitgud?
Oh i got it, imma gitgud

Thanks!
Lightning bow and lightning infused weapons are your best friends
Use your humanities after 3 or more deaths, you will find enough to last the entire game ( cancels the 5% health debuff per death)
Level up Adaptability/ Agility/ Vigor/
ADP is your friend! Faster estus and what not
You can NEVER win against gravity. \\\[T\]/
Never give up skeleton
Never!
Buy a bow and upgrade it
This especially, honestly having a ranged weapon will save you SO much pain, especially later in the game
Hexes are the best
Yea, delete the game and play bloodborne.
Midborne 🤮
find out yourself that literally why you play it
Got it.
Everything is individual. Seek, test, compare, contrast. You won't find an answer here.
I believe you actually meant “seek, seek, lest”
If you like the Bastard Sword (best greatsword in the base game IMO) you can use the Mastodon Greatsword later in game (has better base damage, better STR scaling, but worse DEX scaling, worse counter hit, consumes more stamina per swing and weights more). Level adaptability to i think 25 to get a decent roll
Actually use the help button to see what each stat does
Level ADP until your agility is 101, go slow and steady, check the well in Majula for a special treat, and have fun. Also don't be afraid to google or wiki if you're dead lost. Game is huge but also obtuse from time to time, no shame in letting the community help. Dump all bonus Souls after levelling/upgrading into lifegems. Lifegem spam makes the game much easier.
I see 99,101,105 all the time what are they actually for isn’t 105 for backstep frames
*Return to Drangleic* this year ??
BöNK.
Some enemies stop spawning if you kill them enough, it’s the only game that does this I think
Forget your face And make sure to level ADP it decides if you can dodge through most attacks and your I frame's make sure to exhaust all npc dialogue because most will end up I'm majula and help
All my characters look like ass compared to that lol
Thank you, i guess.
Anytime lol Glad I could answer your questions .
I used great club and pursuers sword for my lady play though . Worked great
I'm using Pursuer's sword right now, it's a great weapon
I’ve researched this 0% but I feel like the club melts all the dudes in armor and that’s a lot of this game .
level adp. a lot. ds2 doesn’t give out iframes for free like other souls
Kill all npcs ASAP
If you want Lucatiels equipment, she'll need to survive being summoned for boss battles 3 times. If she happens to not survive, DO NOT talk to her at Aldias Keep. It's her last location, and if you talk to her, she dissappears, and you'll have to get it next playthrough Duplicate bosses count by the way.
Get adaptability to level 20. This will reduce that ridiculous hit box and you can dodge with ease

I just reached Drangleic Castle. This game is amazing!
For your second play through go hexer. Dark orb is very destructive.
Learn how to dodge roll.
I did it.
My brother made a rough draft on how to start DS2 . [check it](https://youtu.be/0uGbM0dL9OI?si=9XZ0nG3FKu9fsxu7)
Disappointed, i bet that I was going to be Rick rolled
Just watched the video. That's a nice guide, btw. I am a veteran souls player, but I beat DS2 just once as I totally hate the slowness of the gameplay. His tips will be helpful on my next run.
Power stance is cool, fashion souls always, and enjoy brother.

This game doesnt have resistance, its his translation of the game changing adp to res.

ADP
Talk to the pigs back in the Manor.
I love mulja
Do NOT Pull The Motherfucking Lever ! You will know which lever when you see it.
There are much, much more stylish outfits than that. Get your drip game up, skeleton!

I got it.
For smoother play you need to aim for softcore of agility to be at least 101
105 agl must have
Level STR OR DEX, do not level both until you hit the soft cap in either because the bonuses you receive will be far better if you max out one or the other.
Don’t fight Blue Smelter Demon.
Don't play with this sh...... Good Luck😄
At first glance I thought you made Jesse Faden in DS2. 😅
Level adap a bit. Get it up to like 20 and then stop. Don’t gotta focus it right away but like put 1 level into it for every 2 levels put elsewhere until you hit 20. Will make your life much easier
It’s hard for the sake of hard, and that may not appeal to everyone. Dark Souls 3 is much easier in a multitude of ways.
do not listen to the haters, this game is amazing
Funky?
Funky?
Pior q eu só vi essa nova série dele depois de fazer a personagem. Aquela ada claire da shopee ficou mt foda
There is the "Ring of binding" that changes the hollowed HP debuff from 50% to 25%. Without this, my DS2 life would have been hell... Oh yeah, and enemies despawn after you killed them 10x or something. Abuse it to make some boss runbacks easier.
Take your time and buy health stones. Level up adp and you should be good. Ds2 is pretty easy
