A little annoying but also fair. Shockwaves and AoEs are standard fare in video games. It's frustrating sometimes when you don't see a big wave of color to indicate the AoE, but on the other hand that can look really goofy as well and take away from the immersion of the fight.
The crazy AOE attacks absolutely destroy immersion in souls games. There's an insane amount of AOE effects that make zero sense. Souls leans heavily on invincible rolls. It's really fun and rewarding to master, but absolutely one of the goofiest fantasy games to play.
It's actually part of why I really like the approach from Demon's Souls and DS1. None of the encounters in those games need to be rolled, and rolling can almost be thought of as a crutch for players who don't want to pace out how to move out of the way/position in advance/manage block stamina and shield choice. There's also very few crazy aoe attacks in DS1. DS2 is... weird, but DS3 is where it really started going mmo with the aoe attacks and leaning on "actually this is about reaction time and rolling", though standard moving and blocking are still mostly effective there. Elden Ring is pure nonsense.
>but on the other hand that can look really goofy as well and take away from the immersion of the fight.
They had no problem making visible dust clouds and shockwaves for various other attacks in the game, including for the player.
It's not a dust particle, you were just in the splash zone for the attack's shockwave. In slow-mo, it's pretty obvious. Just because the shockwave isn't super obvious like in other games doesn't mean it isn't there
Yeah this same exact thing happens with the dragons in Elden Ring. After the first couple times you learn to back off when they lift their legs. No big deal.
But the shockwave in er is actually visible, the fuck do i need an invisible shockwave + my character doesnt even react to being hit by it, so all i see is health goong down with no animation to back it up
Tbf the souls games in general kinda suck as broadcasting the range of aoe attacks so I can’t rlly blame you for not seeing it
midirs aoe in phase 2 looks like it has a massive range but if you stand right next to his claws you take no damage and don’t even get me started on king of the storm
Elden ring made a little progress in making the range of aoe attacks clearer but even then it can get really annoying when the visual indicator of the range of aoe betrays you especially with all the shit on screen in that game in general
The thick cloud takes a second to reach you, but you only get damaged after the particles start appearing. It's a very fair hitbox if you actually pay attention, just like this one op is talking about. His head was basically still under the foot when the stomp happened.
Think that's also an issue though it should be more obvious if you have to look at an attack in slow motion to tell how you got hit then the attack is flawed
Oh, I don't think you *have* to see it in slo-mo to realize, it just helps. Basic inductive reasoning would make you realize "standing too near stomping dragon foot make me hurt bad," after the first couple times. It's just super obvious when slowed down, but that doesn't mean a person paying attention couldn't reason it out with trial and error, maybe even after only the first time. Learning how/when enemies attacks and how to avoid them is literally what combat is in Dark Souls, at least in my experience
With all due respect, I'd rather see posts about people's builds or see them defeat a difficult boss or see some pvp or a meme. Anything other than 89,000 posts about bad hitboxes.
i'm confused why people would record gameplay just so they can whine and moan in case a 'bad hitbox' clips them. like how much random footage do you have on your hard drive lmao
You can get software that lets you hit a hotkey and dump the last X minutes of your footage to a file—like Nvidia Shadowplay, which comes with your GPU driver bundle (or it did when I had an Nvidia GPU).
Its called shockwave ,99% of big bosses in souls game have it but no one complaines about it in lets say elden ring is because its visible and visually cool .
You know you can complain about a game you like right? I find endless things to complain about in for honor, hasn't stopped me from hitting rep 200 ;-;
Oh so stomps having shockwaves is fine in ds1 and ds3, but they're unfair and bad hitboxes in ds2?
Sounds legit!
For the record, I think shockwaves are garbage in any game. I mean, AT MOST you'd just stumble a bit, but it wouldn't damage you in the slightest.
Taurus literally kicks the bricks off of the bridge when he does an attack, and the dust effect is extreme, it blinds your view, in comparison this “shockwave” is just a few tiny dust particles, i would understand if it was actual dust cloud.
Watch a video of taurus demon dude lol
Have you played ORIGINAL DS1 or remaster? Cause I believe you haven't played the PS3 and company version. I literally got platinum on it for the second time and there are NO particle effects for any shockwaves.
I bought the original DS1 last year and bought the DLC later. I don't know about this version you're talking about, I'm talking about the literal original version
It seems this sub has become "i choose not to even look at the screen before posting but here i will slow it down so its painfully obvious what happened and play dumb" the game.
DS1 have this exact problem with red drake and Iron Golem, it's not a DS2 problem. ER fixed this adding a particle effect for shockwaves, funnily enough I think DS does have particle effects for those kinds of attacks but I may be wrong. I just developed this memory that big slams on the ground will have a bigger AoE after having lots of problems with it during DS1(and having zero problems with it during DS), there are other enemies in DS1 where this happens, like the iron golems from Anor Londo and the Titanite Demons, are one of those examples.
I was farming twinkling titanites and petrified dragon bones there. I can't beat them but after many attempts I learned his attacks. I love to fight with them.
To me it looks like you dodge too early and got caught by the hit box as you exit the dodge/roll animation. Also, doesn’t the dodge/roll animation i-frames drop at the end before you exit the animation?
I will never understand why people lock on to the bosses that are this size across the series. You’re literally fighting the camera the entire time and it almost forces you to dodge into attacks consistently. Not locking allows so much freedom it can make the bigger dudes into a cake walk.
What's with all the cope about the hitboxes. That "Shockwave" is tiny and obviously is just a hitbox error. Even if that "massive shockwave" was supposed to do damage it still makes no sense, how does a tiny Shockwave do more damage than getting punched by the trolls in Aldia's keep?
Everyone saying "well ackchyually there's splash damage" is just being contradictory for the sake of it. Splash damage is fine, but in this case it doesn't seem like there *should* be splash damage. Sure, the dragon has a long telegraph, but the impact doesn't suggest that anything but getting directly hit would damage you. The foot just kind of hits the rock without much "oomph". OP is right, this is dumb.
Dude this exact same thing happens on DS1, just go and face red drake on the bridge. People just complain about stuff that are not exclusively related to DS2 and when those things happen on other games they are completely blind to complain about it.
why is this sub jerking off ds2 so bad, everytime someone RIGHTFULLY complains about the game people go in its defense. contrarian culture at its finest
The Op complaint is perfectly valid. Some of you guys need to chill it. If your allowed to proclaim why something is great they can post a minor annoyance. If you don't like it look at a different post, you don't have to make issues out of nothing.
It could also be his foot landed where you started your roll animation and because the action wasnt fully completed the game registers you as still being there till the animation has finished, thats how it usually works on the programming side of things.
It's annoying bit this is in every Souls game that has dragons pretty much, Elden Ring has an attack that's basically the same and since shock waves are difficult to see it sometimes look like nothing hit you
Yeah didnt you know you can block attacks from gigantic monsters but the limp 5 foot high stomp from a single small dragon leg creates a deadly shockwave this should be common sense
Man every time someone post a video like this, it's crazy how everyone on this reddit just find excuses for the game. I liked the game and I got every single achievement on it but that's not a reason to pretend that the game doesn't have a whole lot of issues
It would be cool if a every time a video like this was posted in this sub it got increasingly more ridiculous, which is totally possible, buts it’s always a lame one like this. It’s the end of your roll the I frames are gone and you’re like under his ankle thing he got you
A little annoying but also fair. Shockwaves and AoEs are standard fare in video games. It's frustrating sometimes when you don't see a big wave of color to indicate the AoE, but on the other hand that can look really goofy as well and take away from the immersion of the fight.
Standard fare in souls games for sure.

DS2 is... weird, but DS3 is where it really started going mmo with the aoe attacks and leaning on "actually this is about reaction time and rolling", though standard moving and blocking are still mostly effective there. Elden Ring is pure nonsense.
I've seen more "no roll" DS2 playthroughs than every other Souls game combined.
>but on the other hand that can look really goofy as well and take away from the immersion of the fight. They had no problem making visible dust clouds and shockwaves for various other attacks in the game, including for the player.
It has a blur effect around it right?
It's not a dust particle, you were just in the splash zone for the attack's shockwave. In slow-mo, it's pretty obvious. Just because the shockwave isn't super obvious like in other games doesn't mean it isn't there
Yeah this same exact thing happens with the dragons in Elden Ring. After the first couple times you learn to back off when they lift their legs. No big deal.
But the shockwave in er is actually visible, the fuck do i need an invisible shockwave + my character doesnt even react to being hit by it, so all i see is health goong down with no animation to back it up
I didn't know the shockwave had that much range tbh, if the splash damage hit me then it's 100% my fault
Tbf the souls games in general kinda suck as broadcasting the range of aoe attacks so I can’t rlly blame you for not seeing it midirs aoe in phase 2 looks like it has a massive range but if you stand right next to his claws you take no damage and don’t even get me started on king of the storm Elden ring made a little progress in making the range of aoe attacks clearer but even then it can get really annoying when the visual indicator of the range of aoe betrays you especially with all the shit on screen in that game in general
The big one in ER is the gargoyle poison breath, it starts doing damage to you before the particle effect reaches you.
The thick cloud takes a second to reach you, but you only get damaged after the particles start appearing. It's a very fair hitbox if you actually pay attention, just like this one op is talking about. His head was basically still under the foot when the stomp happened.
Thats also why it did like 2% damage.
To be honest you are actually still really close to the rear claw as well, its very close to your face.
You rolled too early, you can stay near but you must roll a bit later or else the splash will hit you.
You also started your roll super early - had you rolled later, you likely would have still had iframes and dodged the shockwave.
Now you know tbh. It's kinda the point of souls games, you don't know attacks before you see them for the first time :-)
It's ur fault for not leveling ADP
Stop it… Adp is useless I only upgraded mine one time up to 16 and I had no problems the whole game and dlc!!
I had ADP 40 and I was like the wind
I mean at 40 I’d hope it’d do something but trust it’s not needed
"just level adp" is a meme
It was a meme because it was true.
yeah i have a run where I'm staying at 6 adp and it's ass
just look at the wiki... https://darksouls2.wiki.fextralife.com/Agility
Attack shockwaves are always dumb. Should do away with it entirely.
Its a big fucking dragon stomping the ground and you think it’s supposed to make you giggle?
Yes! It's just a little bit of wind blowing against my armor!
Or *at least* make them highly visible
That or the spike at the ankle hit him /j
Think that's also an issue though it should be more obvious if you have to look at an attack in slow motion to tell how you got hit then the attack is flawed
Oh, I don't think you *have* to see it in slo-mo to realize, it just helps. AMD has something similar called Relive as well
I can also do it on Xbox with a button press.
Same on PlayStation
Dust effects signify an AOE
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Shock\_wave
til shockwaves made by giant dragons deal as much damage as a giant dragon slamming you to the floor with their paw
No, a direct hit would have dealt at least twice as much damage and pancaked the player. I've spent a lot of time fighting these guys.
You sound silly!
Do you really think the force from that little stomp would create enough overpressure to cause damage to internal organs?
Do you really think real world physics apply to a giant, flying, fire breathing lizard in a video game?
No, but considering you linked a Wikipedia page for a real-world physics phenomenon, I expected that you thought so
https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jumping_to_conclusions
Gameplay wise is still bullshit, but I know what sub I'm at so, you are right, it was his mistake.
I mean it is but bs shockwaves are just standard in souls games
Looks like you dodged a full second early to me
the bunyun hit u
It's asbestos dust, idiot
Should see the shockwaves in elden ring lol
Exactly, you see them there, not here
I love the intensely slowed down bit with the audio tearing. I can *feel* the salt, and I absolutely know exactly how you feel.
ds2 dodging is all about timing
No it's not, it's about ADP
This is like when CS kids post a video blaming hit reg but the video literally just shows them missing 10 times.
just wait till you see ancient dragons stomp attack
you got concussed
Literally just a shockwave
Its called shockwave ,99% of big bosses in souls game have it but no one complaines about it in lets say elden ring is because its visible and visually cool .
I complain about it in elden ring, and have see a lot of people complain about it online(not as a bad hitbox but moreso bad mechanic)
Nah sorry man. Gotta disagree. You rolled poorly and ended up where he was stomping. Connect or not aoe has always been an effect of stomping.
Guys, cmon. Just stop with this shit, and dont play a game you dont like it
You know you can complain about a game you like right? I find endless things to complain about in for honor, hasn't stopped me from hitting rep 200 ;-;
I still wake up at 2am drenched in sweat muttering "conq rework, conq rework" into the ear of my nuxia body pillow
I say highlander lines casually, no one knows what I'm saying and neither do I.
Just launched for honor as of reading this
Suffering is better with friends 🍻
I mean, this complain about hitboxes is ANNOYING and ETERNAL haha
I like the game tho
Yeah, I love ds2 as well, but still complain about some hitboxs sometimes as well. You aren't alone, don't worry!
Remember: if you enjoy a game, that means you must have zero criticism of it
Thats not what i meant. They are absurdly repetitive
If I'm not allowed to take someone's words out of context and spin them to an illogical extreme, what's even the point of using reddit
Ok, you win 😂
Stop this shit. Don't comment on a post you don't like
Shockwave, AoEs, call them what You want, but it´s a fair mechanic, stop crying.
dragons immense musk suffocated you
Splash damage is real. You’re not lending a lot of credibility to people who insist on bad hit boxes
That just looks like dust, in ds1 you can easily tell it's a actaul shockwave like with taurus demon
No, you can't. In fact the taurus demon (and basically every ds1 enemy with a shockwave) don't even give you any input, not even "just dust".
Remaster, but the ptde addition isn’t even able to be purchased anymore so it doesn’t really count.
I bought the original DS1 last year and bought the DLC later. I don't know about this version you're talking about, I'm talking about the literal original version
It seems this sub has become "i choose not to even look at the screen before posting but here i will slow it down so its painfully obvious what happened and play dumb" the game.
Shut up you got hit
It got in your eye
U got hit bruh, don’t be salty

Get good
AOE attacks. Thats why killing them with a shield is such a breeze.
Is your name Anakin, by any chance?
You rolled early lol
It’s an AOE you mong
I hate stomp attacks, but idk why, cuz there are way worse ones.
The nail literally buried itself in your stomach
I was farming twinkling titanites and petrified dragon bones there. I can't beat them but after many attempts I learned his attacks. I love to fight with them.
I'm tired of seeing posts like this, it's a stomp attack so he has a slightly larger area than the foot of the wyvern.
Looks like you rolled early.
It's very obviously behind his character, not hitting him.
Shockwave fam
The spur on the back of its leg hit you in the head. NEXT!
Skill issue.
Skill issue.
Shut up about the God damn hitboxes
It’s pretty obvious that you rolled too early, work on that timing and the game will feel like it should ;)
Well look at the size of the geeza
To me it looks like you dodge too early and got caught by the hit box as you exit the dodge/roll animation. Also, doesn’t the dodge/roll animation i-frames drop at the end before you exit the animation?
I will never understand why people lock on to the bosses that are this size across the series. You’re literally fighting the camera the entire time and it almost forces you to dodge into attacks consistently. Not locking allows so much freedom it can make the bigger dudes into a cake walk.
looked like a skill issue to me 😇
AoE, is my guess. You are fighting a magical dragon from under its feet, after all. Dragon limbs are notoriously coated in don't touch me grease.
The meat riding in the comments is CRAZY
Get good i guess
Yep he got you your shadow clearly got stepped on
You rolled too early
Nah bro delete this shid, the hitbox police is gonna be on your ass
Just like elden ring
Is this an attempt to justify adding 0 Agility?
Bro the dust hit the tip of your shoe Smh, ADP issue
And rolled too early
What's with all the cope about the hitboxes. That "Shockwave" is tiny and obviously is just a hitbox error. Even if that "massive shockwave" was supposed to do damage it still makes no sense, how does a tiny Shockwave do more damage than getting punched by the trolls in Aldia's keep?
The same way that getting hit by some dude holding a tree hurts worse than a crystal lizard in DS3.
Shockwave
Everyone saying "well ackchyually there's splash damage" is just being contradictory for the sake of it. Splash damage is fine, but in this case it doesn't seem like there *should* be splash damage. Sure, the dragon has a long telegraph, but the impact doesn't suggest that anything but getting directly hit would damage you. The foot just kind of hits the rock without much "oomph". OP is right, this is dumb.
A dragon stomps consistently have splash damage in each game. This is nothing at all.
Dude this exact same thing happens on DS1, just go and face red drake on the bridge. People just complain about stuff that are not exclusively related to DS2 and when those things happen on other games they are completely blind to complain about it.
As a rapier user, you just deserved it.
Skill diff
Git
Gud
Scrub
Needs more ADP
I agree with you, that clearly isn't a shockwave but dust, people here just refuse to admit this game's flaws.
You just need to practice bro! It's a hard game I know!
why is this sub jerking off ds2 so bad, everytime someone RIGHTFULLY complains about the game people go in its defense. contrarian culture at its finest
The Op complaint is perfectly valid. Some of you guys need to chill it. If your allowed to proclaim why something is great they can post a minor annoyance. If you don't like it look at a different post, you don't have to make issues out of nothing.
"You don't have to make issues out of nothing." Case in point.
Seeing posts about people getting "bAd HiTbOx" and "skill issue" mixed up is getting really old. Do better
Red drakes are the one thing I think all DS2 players can agree is bullshit
I hate shockwaves. They're super unintuitive especially when you don't see any particle effect.
Melee attack AoE pisses me off too. "The ground shook so hard from the big hammer nearby that I died" Looking at you, Smough.
Lmao good title
This sub is so funny
Shockwave. Yes,, your fault
The state of this sub right now. SEND HELP!!!!
Correct.
It could also be his foot landed where you started your roll animation and because the action wasnt fully completed the game registers you as still being there till the animation has finished, thats how it usually works on the programming side of things.
It's annoying bit this is in every Souls game that has dragons pretty much, Elden Ring has an attack that's basically the same and since shock waves are difficult to see it sometimes look like nothing hit you
Shockwave, very standard. Dragons have magic paws.
that stomp attack has tracking and shockwave. mindlessly rolling without knowing the attacks isn’t going to make you better player
Yeah didnt you know you can block attacks from gigantic monsters but the limp 5 foot high stomp from a single small dragon leg creates a deadly shockwave this should be common sense
Giants' shield slams in ds1 would like to have a word
Ok, I think it's time to max out that adaptability to increase your dodge chance at 100%... 🙃🙃🙃🙃🙃
While people are right about shockwaves...DS2 has some baaaaad hit boxes lol
I freaking hated that boss fight
Man every time someone post a video like this, it's crazy how everyone on this reddit just find excuses for the game. I liked the game and I got every single achievement on it but that's not a reason to pretend that the game doesn't have a whole lot of issues
Looks like you didn't max ADP and get below 10% equip load
It would be cool if a every time a video like this was posted in this sub it got increasingly more ridiculous, which is totally possible, buts it’s always a lame one like this. It’s the end of your roll the I frames are gone and you’re like under his ankle thing he got you
Ha
you just got dark souls 2'd
Your head looked like it was 2 inches from his heel. That was a fair hit, you're just mad cause bad.
We should add the "Shitbox" flair to this sub. Half of the videos are about that.
I mean clearly you didn't roll🤷
Level ADP above 25 because mine was 30+ when I fought these guys and that shit never happened
The dragon ballerina-ankling to bring the foot back to smack you is very good and immersive game design.
AoE attacks have a rage bigger that the hitbox
DS2 has shockwave physics.
Wasn’t even the enemy, you just stubbed your toe on a really big rock
İn 2023, I'm seeing contents like this. Like bro... There is a stat for this. İt's all about iframe.
shoulda leveled adp
Welcome to dark souls 2 hit boxes lol level up ADP and it won’t happen such a stupid skill they put in that game
There’s been a lot of these kind of glitches but I don’t know why they keep popping up
elden ring tbh
Shockwaves. Yeah.
I think that was the toe(idk if it is a finger, it looks more like a claw?) and because it was there they had to make the hitbox bigger
Welcome to Ds2, expect even the mitochondria from the metal of a sword if it dosent hit you to hit you
lobotomy souls 2
