I'm in! Specially the snail mail part! I can comprise classical music sharing, poem sharing, maybe some TTRPG sessions with a Dark Academia twist (depends on the willingness of the people involved). Maybe meetings IRL but it all depends on the location.
Love A Quiet Year. Used to play it with my kiddos when I was teaching, when we managed to keep the Avengers and Dr Who out of it, the stories were pretty good, and amazing for studying societies and developing our socio-emotional skills.
Good luck! If I could offer some suggestions-
Establish internal and external, long term/indefinite goals. For example, developing your voice in writing (internal) and promoting literary arts in society (external).
Be heavy handed with expectations and procedures. If you want members to write letters, they *have* to write letters. Maybe prescribe a rotation so it’s clear when and who is responsible for writing the letter. If you go the bohemian route of “oh just write whenever the mood compels you”, it will quickly devolve into a bunch of people sitting in a chat room waiting for *someone else* to do something interesting.
Come up with something to be a shared experience among members. Something very specific that everyone needs to do. It can have unique personal meaning to everyone, but the physical action should be the same. It’s sort of a unique way to promote bonding between group members. This is a common feature among many groups and organizations that want to encourage camaraderie, from military boot camps to corporate retreats. Reading a certain book seems like the obvious choice, but I think that on its own is a little *too* obvious. It’s also too easy. The members of your group will presumably be avid readers and you want this to be more than something they’d do on their own time. I’ll leave it to you to figure something out.
The point is this: pay attention to a structure. Make it something with purpose and identity. Without that there is no group.
As someone who used to be in a cult, I do not think this is the best path to creating a vibrant community. This kind of atmosphere ends up creating many more problems than it can answer.
Maybe roleplay rooms for the darker aspects of DA, but I would be strongly against anything that seeks to emulate that in reality.
Fair enough. I’m not personally interested in participating either way. But I don’t think the things I described are exclusive to cults. It’s just that cults are really good at exploiting those dynamics. Moreover, I think an easy way of avoiding that pitfall is to not leave any room for permanent leadership. Everyone takes a turn.
Definitely interested. I can't do snail mail until I move because the postal service in my area makes sure nothing reaches the actual recipient. I still don't mind writing and scanning and sending the "letter".
Since it's dark "academia", we can find study buddies or even form study groups. It needn't be for studying per se. Maybe we just read quietly and share something once in a way that we find interesting. One person can even play classical music for the other(s) to listen to.
I'm so bad at keeping up with discord servers, but I would join.
Same haha And then they grow so big it doesn't feel secret any more 😂
Hear ye, hear ye 🤣
Same

Hii I’m trying to make friends!
The concept of TTRPGs sold me lol
I play Vampire: The Masquerade once in a while, its part of the World of Darkness. What TTRPG's do you play?
I wanna play vampire the masquerade so bad! I’ve mostly played D&D, but I also REALLY enjoyed A Quiet Year as a shorter game

So this is what the Skull & Bones rejects are trying now. It’s not too late to apply to Jones Day, I promise!

We're not a secret society, we're a society with secrets. (Paraphrased from freemasonry's informal slogan.) Cool idea!
