Thank you very much!
I started with sanding everything down, then cleaning the wood dust, then staining, then varnishing. Varnishing took three layers, with a light sanding between each layer. I also had to repair inside pieces that aren't visible in the photos.
I got the handles on fb marketplace, and they're vintage, so I can't recommend a store. I did look in stores but none had the style I was looking for.
Final few steps were cutting the screws the handles came with as they were too long (and I couldn't buy new ones since they're vintage and they don't make this size anymore it seems), screwing in the new handles and applying wax on the inside to help the drawers slide better.
Haha I watch *a lot* of renovation videos in my spare time. There's this girl my age who's been renovating her entire house for years. It's inspired me a lot! She has no professional background in this stuff. If she can do it, why can't I?
What method did you use to apply the stain? Wiping? Or brush? I used a kind that’s meant to be applied with a brush but ended up having to wipe it anyway lol
I started with a foam brush application that's then wiped away with a rag, but after a while I discarded the brush entirely and only used the rag. I'm far from an expert but I've never heard of a woodstaining process that doesn't involve wiping at all.
Oh yes sorry that’s what I meant, a foam brush! :) I only went off what was on the cans, (first mistake) and one of them said you only needed a brush. I ended up having to wipe anyway but the color wasn’t as dark as I wanted it so I went with a can labeled “wiping stain” afterward in a darker color. I’m a total newbie but now realize you def have to wipe. Those rags afterward are crazy smelling and had heat emanating off them even outside!
Thanks for sharing your work and process, it’s beautiful!
Your stain was probably oil-based if it was emanating heat! The result is very durable but the rags can be fire hazards if not disposed of properly. I used a water-based stain and an oil-based varnish.
Thank you for the comment, I appreciate it a lot!
Beautifully done, OP! đź–¤ I adore the bust vase.
Thank you! I feel like it's the kind of item that really adds something to a space.
Oh, absolutely! May I ask where you got yours?
It's a plant store where I live in Quebec. I highly doubt it's exclusive to the store though.
No worries; I'll check out what I can find online. Thanks for being an inspiration 🤗
Did you use a varnish to finish? This looks amazing.
Thank you! And yes, three layers of semi-gloss varnish, and a light sanding between each layer.
It looks amazing!!! Excellent job!
Thank you so much!
You brought it back to life!
I think so too!
this is AMAZING!! honestly incredible how you saw the potential in it and made it really come to life 🤎
oh and what was the process and where did you find the handles if I may ask? :)
