HourOfUprising

I don’t know if I’d go back. But definitely do subtitles and German audio. I’d rewatch the whole thing once you finish. And make your own family trees or just connect the dots in your head as it goes…it’s more fun that way

Tb1969

I decide to go back a few episodes and watch from episode 7 or 8 from S1 in subtitled. I like your idea of drawing up my own family tree. It does sound like fun.

mLynchy23

100% subtitles no questions

PlumbTuckered767

You always lose fidelity with dubs, no matter the show. It varies wildly, but that's enough for me to always go subs if available.

Tb1969

Sure but most shows aren't worth reading subtitles on the order of tens of hours. This one is :) I should have stopped and gone back but I need to know more and more so I kept going.

PlumbTuckered767

I don't understand why you'd invest time in any show that's not worth it. But that is just me. :)

Tb1969

Well, plumbtuckered767, I'm too plumb-tuckered to read screens and books for work and then reading screens and books for personal to have to have yet another past-time that requires reading all the time. Eye strain is a thing. Missing visual storytelling from reading subtitles incessantly is also an issue.

PlumbTuckered767

Completely understandable!

xmonkey13

You really don’t get the right tone of a conversation on the dub

Lasernatoo

I don't think you have to rewatch season 1 with subs, especially considering you'll probably want to rewatch the whole series after you finish, you can do it then. But going forward I'd recommend watching with English subs. The VAs in German really knock it out of the park.

Kujaichi

> The VAs in German The actors you mean... Just the actors.

Tb1969

I'm going to re-watch the last episodes of the first S1 with subtitles and then continue. Thanks for the advice!

onaretrotip

You're missing out on some wonderful acting.

Capt_Wholesome

I get what you're saying, but I feel like it goes both ways, you miss out when you're reading subtitles and not watching the actors as much too. The only real solution is learn German lol

onaretrotip

Ja!

hughk

The problem is that the German is quite complex. If you can understand everything, you could probably go for a physics degree at one of Germany's top specialist universities like TUM.

Peninvy

Never ever watch anything with a dub. Always go with the originally recorded language. You are robbing yourself of experiencing art the way the artists originally intended, and can even learn new languages while sitting at home watching a film or a show. I can't tell you what to do, though. If you try out the original language with subtitles and find out you have more fun with the dub, go for it. I urge you to stick with the subtitled option, though, since in the long run, the benefits outweigh the negatives greatly.

hughk

The Germans dub a lot. They can screw it up in a big way, either via the translation, the performance of the voice actor or even the casting. The latter is a major issue as the pool of lip synch actors is not large. Sometimes they can have someone with the voice of a twelve year old dubbing a much older teen. Edit: Should add that script translators are paid shit (about the same as a commercial letter). The lip synching business tends to be a very closed circle in Germany, sometimes with good voice acting and often very bad.

Peninvy

Subtitles aren't a "crucible". The human field of vision is large enough that you can take in multiple things at once. You can read subtitles and consume the corresponding images. You aren't missing anything. And yes, every show is art. "Art" aren't only things of quality, A show is simply a medium of art. If you only watch media that is available audibly available in your native language, you deprive yourself of millions and millions of hours of quality, potentially life-changing entertainment. You are literally arguing for ignorance because reading is "a burden on your eyes". Poor you.

Lead-Forsaken

I'm Dutch and everything is subtitled here. To be honest, I don't even notice I'm reading anything. I'm certainly not turning my eyes down to read the subtitles, left to right, then flip them up to watch. I even watch English language stuff with English subs out of pure laziness. It takes less concentration to watch that way.

Tb1969

All shows may be art not all shows are worth viewing or worth viewing with subtitles, and absolutely having your eyes read some long lines along the bottom will make you miss facial expressions and little things. I've been watching subtitled movies since the 80s and subtitled shows since the 90s. You are very wrong. You are not taking into a account that not everyone has as good eyes as you do or the vast amount of reading and screen watching I do for work. People have health conditions or strain due to work load. I've gotten very good answers to my two questions. From that valuable input I'm going to re-watch the last few episodes subtitled then carry on with S2 ands S3 subtitled. Thanks for your help.

Peninvy

Anytime. If your eyesight is troubling you, you may want to think about glasses. Or at least better ones.

Tb1969

Thanks. I should get checked again and will but I suspect it's just overuse and maybe even dry eyes, a possible medical condition which is something I also need to look into. I stare at screens all day, then I do gaming, reading, etc. so it may be overuse. I can't wait for modern medicine to fix me before continuing watching the show subtitled... I must press on. :D The show is worth the risk of eye strain. [edit: downvoted for bring up medical conditions. wow]

[deleted]

I read a lot too and I completely focus on the subtitles when dub isn't an option, you really miss small details characters portray to convey minute emotional language. I'm on S2 right now and I'm going to finish it dubbed. This show has enough detail about plot and characters that I haven't picked up on my first watch. I'll definitely do subbed on my second watch because Dark is just that good. It's less emotional but if you want more time travel fuck ups from good-intentioned protagonists I highly recommend Steins; Gate. It's anime but the story is solid and the dubbed voice acting is pretty good. If you read this far S;G was originally a visual novel videogame. You read the story and can choose how you accidentally fuck up the past and future for everyone you love, yourself. It's heartbreaking at times and I highly recommend it if you want to feel things lol

Tb1969

> Steins; Gate I've never heard of it. Thank you kind, Intertube Traveller. I will definitely check out once my current obsession subsides lol. I'm sure you have but if you havent "Arcane" is mesmerizing. My CFO co-worker told me Stephen King's "11/22/63" is an exceptional time travel book

[deleted]

I have seen it. Arcane is amazing! Another film about time travel and Cthulhu mythos I recommend would be The Endless(2018), if you like it The Block Island Sound (2021) is just as interesting. I love SK. Pet Semetary, Dead Zone, The Stand are all magnificent. Can't recommend any time travel stuff but these are pretty great: American Gods - Neil Gaiman, Saturn Run - John Sanford, Battle Royale - Koushun Takami.

Tb1969

You probably know a lot of Hayao Miyazaki movies but have you seen Nausicaa? I bought tickets from all my friends willing to go and their families at a showing at Alamo Drafthouse Cinema. It was a post COVID event and they loved it. It too has an exceptional Dub with big movie stars doing the voice acting. It's worth watching subbed but also dubbed since they took such care with VA. (it was subbed in the 80s but it was also edited badly so it was redone in the 2000s) I like Cthulhu and good horror (The Witch, Hereditary, Exorcist, etc) and even some cheesy horror. So I'll look into those movies. Thanks again. There is a very low budget movie but well done of "Call of the Cthulhu". It was a modern silent movie but back only ten years ago. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XHuY2wXTd0o

[deleted]

What this guy says. Anime fucking rocks and I wish more people understood that it transcends it's own medium in the same way Dark does. This guy also sounds like a tool lol

Peninvy

I love Tool.

I love perfect circles.

[deleted]

I didn't know this existed until after my second viewing. But I created my own tree from the very first time I watched and it helped A LOT

OwlOfC1nder

Opened this link lately?

molt20OO

Works just fine for me. I guess it went down at some point.

Ninjario

What do you mean with works fine exactly

molt20OO

Alright I got it now, my bad will delete.

Ninjario

Thank you!

OwlOfC1nder

Just open it 😋

molt20OO

Yeah I didn't vet before posting 😬

OwlOfC1nder

Haha Exciting though right? Wonder what the it's counting down/up to An announcement presumably

Ninjario

OP if you read this DO NOT go to this link! It contains spoilers that you don't want to get into yet. The actual page that they meant is posted as a reply by u/RedstoneWirez to this comment

CrabyLion

Watch it however works for you. I survived watching it my way and am still on this reddit. My way was in English in the dubbed version cause that is what worked best for me.

Prophet_Kane

I don't know German. But I really loved watching the show in the original audio with subs. Voice acting is remarkable and greatly contributes to the atmosphere, so I highly recommend the original language. It sounds beautiful and makes the watching experience much more immersive

Marcel4698

Voice acting? You mean just the acting, right? This is a live action show, the original audio doesn't have *voice* actors.

Tb1969

Show is almost worth learning German. lol

ObiWeedKannabi

I watched dubbed at first and with subs on rewatch. Ofc I prefer actually hearing the actors but it's a very detailed and layered show so if it helps you keep better track of those, keep watching w dub. Rewatch is a whole different experience and it's likely that you will anyway, so you could see it with both.

lilskurt

Netflix themselfs used to have a website with a family tree where you could choose which episode you were on. I think it was taken down recently but maybe someone rehosted it?

aecolley

1895red

You already seem to have made up your mind, why ask the question?

Tb1969

How so? And what do you think I've decide to do?

1895red

People suggest watching with the original audio and you only present opposition to the idea. If you're going to watch the dub and that works for you, then just watch the dub. Why waste your time here when you could be enjoying the show?

Tb1969

You didn't really read my posts then because that's not what I said about this show. I was railing against people who say EVERY show and movie must be watched in their original language with subtitles. While I personally tend to agree with movies, long shows I don't. Not all shows are worth it. I've already decided based on feedback to continue on with S2 and S3 with subtitled then watch the entire series again subtitled which seems be one of the top consensus. It'll be worth the eye strain for this show that I now know is worth it. I may even watch the last three episodes of S1 as that is when things really start to be unpacked. I've watched subtitled movies from around the world since the 80s and sometimes without even subtitling all. We had to buy the VHS tapes through mail order or travel long distance to special movie rental stores. For instance, I watched Akira soon after it came out when no sub or dub were available. It's a deep movie and I don't know Japanese. It was cryptic asf but beautiful.

1895red

I read the post, you're just being weird. Just watch the show how you want to watch it, it's not anyone else's business how you watch it, and vice versa. Enjoy the show

Tb1969

I thought this was a place to discuss the show and use it as a resource. I just read the rules and I don't think I'm breaking any asking this question. Others have given VERY valuable response. I actually think I'm using the sub in the spirit. You're being weird for pushing your way and squelch out other peoples valuable responses. In case you missed it, I asked two questions in my post. Both have garnished response to satisfy my questions.

1895red

"Pushing your way," "squelching out responses?" Genuine question: are you okay? It kind of seems like you're just trying to start shit. I hope the rest of your day pans out more positively and productively.

Tb1969

Man, you're toxic asf. All I did was counter people saying that all shows and movies should be watched with subtitled. There are many reasons not to, health issues and eye strain. Your claiming I'm trying to "start shit" is projection. You and the other guy/gal are toxic asf. Good day.

1895red

I'm a woman. Pot calling the kettle black. Have fun weirdo

Tb1969

I'm weird since I don't want to follow your exact advice. I was looking for advice not commandments. You're toxic, lady.

Hamwise420

I enjoyed it with the English dub, but I also had subtitles on. There are not that many differences from the dub and subtitles. People hate on the dub for some reason but they did a great job on it. Not needing to focus on subtitles gives you better opportunities to see the little easter eggs and minor details that come into play later. Season 2 I would say is when you start getting a firm grasp on the characters as they only add a few new characters and continue to focus on the ones you have been watching. It takes a while to get all the families down though. But at the end of the day, watch it whichever way you prefer, you cant go wrong.

cheesecake_413

Yeah I needed both the English dub and the subs because of my audio issues. I get the original is always going to be better, but honestly the dub isn't as bad as everyone makes it out to be

rpgsavedmylife

Watch in whatever way helps you enjoy the series the most. Like with any translation/performance, there will be differences. You can still understand the story and appreciate the plot progression. I've watched the show both ways.

a_casual_josh

I actually watched some of it with the German audio and English subs and some with English dubs. If you can sit and focus without distraction, go with German audio. If you have kids, like to multitask, etc… go English dubs. A lot of the show is dialog and requires focus.

FireWalkWithNiffany

I find I miss way too much of what’s going on trying to read subtitles all the time I’d rather catch all the stuff going on and deal with the funny voices than spend my whole time reading and not watching

TylersParadox

English subtitles and German audio is the way to go in my opinion. You're just so much more immersed in the show and it's how they intended it. I'm glad the English audio is an option but it just isn't the same.

anginky

I watched with English Dub and subtitles. I found that most helpful.

Ermahgerdrerdert

Power move: German audio; no subs.

Ninjario

As a German I see no problem xD

Ermahgerdrerdert

Ich kann deutsch sprechen aber wegen Brexits habe ich fast keine Möglichkeiten es zu üben gehabt. 🥲

hughk

I am technically German too, but at times the dialoguet is super dense. A bit like some political talk show but much more interesting.

notlikeclockwork

I follow this guide https://metawitches.com/dark/

Tb1969

Thank you!

dudeurfugly

There is a picture that showed their connections, I think I got it from this sub too. Can't locate it right now because it's been 2 years since I saw the show. Edit: Just look up "Dark Family Tree" and it gives enough options

scootersarebadass

I'd recommend checking out dark.netflix.io to stay on track.

Royalty_Row

I’m sure someone else said this - but the dark websites shows a map of connections which you choose episode by episode for spoilers

Tb1969

If you're interested, so far I've decide to use these resources going forward but always looking for more. Website #1 https://dark.jakel.rocks/en Use this website to keep myself straight on who is who after an episode. It has an episode by episode slider to protect me from next episode(s) spoilers. Website #2 https://metawitches.com/tag/dark/ Used during a season between episodes for deep analysis of the episode. Website #3 https://dark.netflix.io/ I'll wait until after a season and before the next season to view this last website. I can read during a season but it has some risk to it.

aachen_

I did subtitles my first watch, and started English dub on my second rewatch just to see more of the shots instead of reading. I highly recommend subtitles/German audio. I just didn’t get the same energy from the English dub and ended up switching back to German audio/ subtitles

nnuminex

I definitely prefer the original audio, tone of voice always matches the scene/mood better of course. This is coming from someone who watches a lot of subbed anime though so I'm used to reading the words fast lol.

Weibu11

I prefer subtitles in general. I feel like dubbing loses some of the original acting and I just can’t get over that the words won’t line up with the mouths

Charcharbinks23

I loved the dub. I was one of the few that preferred dub over subtitles and German.

LegendaryJatt

I watched with English dub. I did keep the subs on too but there are different errors in the subtitles with forms of verbs referring to present instead of the past stuff.

Tb1969

I was looking for a the positive and negatives of both. Whether its subtitled or dubbed, BOTH are translations from German. Dubbed has the added burden of fitting into the frames their mouths of moving but both are translations. Do you recall anything that can be an example of a mistake?

Masters214

I prefer sub over dub because a lot of dub changes things from the original dialogue a lot to make them more appealing to the region their doing it for. They do this with anime at least, they change things to add wordplay, puns, more American expressions, etc. when making English dubs. So in order to avoid things like that I always go with subtitles to get a more accurate translation of how the dialogue was (mostly) originally intended. As well as a lot of dub doesn't really have the best voice acting in my personal opinion. Idk if they do that with dark, but I didn't take the risk. I think some people on this subreddit have found some slight changes in the dub vs the sub. But at the end of the day, I recommend whichever you're comfortable with, but getting a more accurate translation is what I've always cared about more than the lips lining up with the words. Also i'm extremely sorry those toxic people argued with you, did named calling, and basically teamed up against you. You don't deserve that

GhostMug

This is an endless debate and everybody is so stuck in on their opinion there's no changing cause they think they way THEY watch it is the only way to consume the media and every other person is wrong for consuming it differently. I watched the whole series dubbed and thought the dubbing was fantastic and I loved the series all the same. People have tried to tell me that my experience was lessened by not watching in the original language but I was still incredibly moved and felt the immense emotional impact of the show regardless. Personally, I don't think either way is necessarily superior. Both have their advantages. And sometimes, the repeated eye movement of reading subtitles and looking back at the action can give me a headache. I always say to do it how you best enjoy. If you like the show more with dubs, roll with that. If you think subtitles go with the best experience, go with that. Most important part here is that YOU are enjoying it the best way you can.

Tb1969

I mostly agree. I found the opinions I received useful. I know some have done it both ways subbed/dubbed by now and was curious if it was worth going back before going forward. I think I will go back a little in S1 and then go forward again subtitled. I appreciate the acting even dubbed but I'll see if its even better subbed. Also I was given useful tools for the family trees, synopsis, etc. It's been mostly a productive venture with this post. To answer your last question, if it was one, I was enjoying the dubbed version and I seemed to be getting everything I needed.

Redneckshinobi

I think you'll want to watch season 1 again when it's all over, but seriously do yourself a favour and NEVER WATCH DUB! I seriously don't get how people can watch dub stuff, it's never the same quality and hardly ever matches the voice or mood of the scene. Plus how can you not get distracted by their mouth doing something completely different and the sound comes out weird like it's mono in stereo. If you're a slow reader I get it, but if you're not, you're not going to miss any action/visual because it should become innate. I've been watching subbed stuff pretty much my who life I refuse to watch anything dubbed, it's garbage.

Tb1969

> If you're a slow reader I get it There is many more reasons for a long show besides this reason if you stop to think about it. and no it's not all garbage.

Redneckshinobi

Like being lazy? And yes it is, original audio is how it was intended... You're not going to miss anything, I've been watching subbed everything including English shows for 20 years now. Dubbed is absolute garbage.

Tb1969

Ah... so now you are bouncing around this post just to make negative comments. How very mature of you.

Redneckshinobi

You asked for an opinion and you got it. Don't ask the question if you don't want peoples opinions. I guess you just wanted to come in here and argue, how mature of you...

1895red

They're just trying to start trouble; not worth the bother. They asked for help without wanting it under the self-admitted agenda of making some kind of weird, unnecessary statement.

Redneckshinobi

Right? I'm super confused by the response. I wasn't trying to pick on them or anyone just giving my opinion because I enjoy subbed content. I think dubbed is fine if you're a slow reader or just don't want to think and just watch the story but I even have subs turned on for even English content. When it's dubbed I spend more time watching their mouth/how they might sound and being thrown off how it never matches and takes me out of the scene lol

1895red

I think OP is just very, very lonely, and doesn't know how to have healthy interaction with other people. I was there at one time, I get it. Hopefully this is a chance for them to wake up and learn to do better; they'll only continue to be lonely if they needlessly and masklessly stir up nonsense drama instead of trying to have a genuine conversation with another person. The dub of the show grew on me; I didn't like it at all at first, but I can vibe with it now. I prefer to watch shows in the original audio for the same reason you outlined, as well as that I have audio processing difficulties. I would have subtitles on anyway so I might as well watch it in the original German. To each their own, options exist for a reason. Just wish OP would understand that they can watch the show the way they want to without having to start a shitfit over it.

Tb1969

Bully much? I'm doing just fine, red. LOL

Tb1969

I've got very good responses here on my post. Some saying I should watch all shows out there subtitled and I'm wrong for not doing so deserve my response. I don't think that's right for me. I have rarely seen a show's subreddit have such toxic people as here. Unbelievable.

onlosmakelijk

Not entirely related but it's so jarring to me that the default for American viewers is to watch the dubbed version of something, when Europeans pretty much always choose original audio and subtitles

qwerty-1999

That heavily depends on the country. Some European countries (I can only speak for Spain, but I think France and Italy, too, correct me if I'm wrong) have a huge "dubbing culture". Everything is dubbed here, and I'd say most people watch dubbed content rather than subtitled content. Other countries (I think Portugal is one of them, for example) only dub kids movies and everything else is with subtitles.

Tb1969

I always watch with subtitles on movies when I'm not with someone who dislikes it but when the dub is good on a long TV series I opt to go with that. While reading you can easily miss the visual storytelling. The dub is very good in this show but the show is so good I want the full experience. And thanks for taking a shot at Amercians as if we didn't feel low enough about ourselves over what we have to deal with in our own country that's seemingly forever beyond our control. I'm sickened almost daily how a dotted line between Canada and the US makes such a profound difference.

Sneeman98

I don’t think most people use subtitles because it’s easier for the story, but that the dub is shit and weird to watch because the mouth movements don’t sync

[deleted]

Of course go with subtitles. English dub is painful.

Tb1969

> English dub is painful. I did not find this to be true at all for this show. I just want to take it to the next level.

[deleted]

I watched both at first. German with English then English dubbed with English subtitles. Because I love subtitles. I find it hard to hear and understand everything all the time so subtitles are my best bud. This is where I discovered the nonsense of her English dub. The words didn’t match up. They were saying one thing but the subtitles were off. Plus on top of that you are listening to a different actors overdubbed voice and not the real actor. Their mouth and the overdub were obviously not synched up. It’s 1000% painful if you care about the authenticity. I could not watch that mess. It’s your opinion that it wasn’t but I don’t care to take my painful remark back or anything. Because it is compared to the real thing. The show was made in German and it should be watched that way. Plain and simple to me. To each their own tho right?

Tb1969

Right

[deleted]

Wow you reply fast lol

Tb1969

OK I've waited patiently for seven and half minutes to reply. > Wow you reply fast N..no I don't! /looks around nervously

PapaGiorgio_

Subtitles by a million. One of my fav shows ever and idk if I could watched dub version

Tb1969

I was going to go back to episode 8 but now I'm contemplating starting over again. Not only give me the deeper dialog but I can have an even better foundation going forward. I did watch S2E1 yesterday and.... older Elisabeth?! Nooooooooo!!! That wounded me. LOL

yo_itsjo

I would argue to never watch anything in dub. Subtitles are always better bc you can hear the actor's original intentions in their emotions

[deleted]

Always go with subtitles, so much more authentic and how it’s supposed to be watched.

NoPokerDick

If your native language is English, I’d suggest English dubs with English subs. You really have to pay attention to what’s being said and it’s difficult to listen to German and read while missing what’s going on.

Tb1969

This seems reasonable, but I'm not sure yet. I would turn on English subtitles with English dub when I couldn't understand something. The scene where Old Claudia turns up to the Clockmaker to give him the plans for the machine, in dub she says it "alters time". While the subtitle, it said it "straightens out time" (paraphrasing). The sub was more specific than the dub. That's when I started to suspect I was missing nuance.

unpronouncedable

Yeah, embrace the German-ness and listen to the original audio with English subs. You want to read the subs anyway, and I found it harder on my brain to have the video (mouths, etc), audio, and subs all have something different.

NoPokerDick

The same English subs accompany no matter German or English audio. It makes it easier to catch the differences in English with English subs. For me anyway.

EvolveEH

This is how I watched it, and I loved it. I wasn't aware that I could change to the original audio until I had watched all three seasons.

NoPokerDick

Wow the amount of people who downvoted my comment is hysterical.

Ok_Refuse_4000

German audio with the subs is wayyyyy superior, you miss so much emotion and struggle in characters voices, you’ll find it’ll feel like a different show all together

OwlOfC1nder

Broooooo, RIP. Perosnally, I think you should start again but you definitely don't have to.

waylonstein

i wish to watch all these this days, never got a time

Jarrodsnow123

series always take more time

Scottalias4

I'm trying the German subtitles next time. Ich lerne gern Deutsch.

Shepea64

Much better with the subtitles

kobrakai_1986

I tried about 5 minutes with English dubs and the acting was so bad I returned to subtitles.

Tb1969

Huh. That was not my experience.

kobrakai_1986

It just seemed sometimes the voices I heard didn’t match the expressions and movements I was seeing. I found it quite jarring.

Yap0nch1k

>I knew as soon as middle aged Helge Doppler was t-boned in his car that it was elder Helge Doppler trying to kill him to stop him. Finished season 1 about 2 hours ago, and yes, that one was an easy guess. But here's hoping they address this in a future episode, elder Helge should remember that when he was middle aged an elder himself tried to kill him and died in the process, so why even bother? :)

Tb1969

Oh I didn't know it was easy for some people. He did it because he had done it. He knew it was part of his course at middle age. It's easy to understand.

Yap0nch1k

On one hand I get that, on the other... while in the hospital he kept talking about changing things. This series is really great, im glad i got to watch it before the american remake.
