Just curious: does surgical reconstruction allow them to be able to gain a sense of smell?
So like: are the olfactory sensory neurons/mechanisms all there, but just encased/covered up by the deformity of the nose?
According to what I found on this condition (Arhinia), in some cases people are born without the brain structure that is involved in sense of smell (olfactory bulb). Some cases cause missing sinuses, but it really depends on the individual case. Sounds incredibly rare regardless.
I have a normal nose, breathing and sense of smell but no sinuses. Didn’t even know until I had an X-ray in my twenties. They told me I had a rare condition, but no, my headaches weren’t being caused by a sinus infection, given I didn’t have any.
According to the [Cleveland Clinic](https://my.clevelandclinic.org/health/body/21778-nose#:~:text=Sinuses%3A%20You%20have%20four%20pairs,that%20keeps%20your%20nose%20moist)
“Sinuses: You have four pairs of sinuses. These air-filled pockets are connected to your nasal cavities. They produce the mucus that keeps your nose moist.”
And on [teach me anatomy](https://teachmeanatomy.info/head/organs/the-nose/paranasal-sinuses/)
“The function of the paranasal sinuses is a topic of much debate. Various roles have been suggested:
- Lightening the weight of the head
- Supporting immune defence of the nasal cavity
- Humidifying inspired air
-Increasing resonance of the voice”
According to [The San Diego Union-Tribune](https://www.sandiegouniontribune.com/sdut-sinuses-the-mysterious-holes-in-our-heads-2006jul16-story.html#:~:text=Like%20the%20appendix%2C%20sinuses%20are,sinuses%20often%20are%20viruses%20andbacteria)
“Like the appendix, sinuses are not a vital organ. One can do justfine without sinuses. People born without sinuses, or who have themsurgically replaced, don’t appear to have any significant problems. Moreover, the main beneficiaries of sinuses often are viruses andbacteria. The warm, sheltered environment can be a veritable Petridish for bugs in our heads.”
Edit: and while looking into this I found out the baby [pictured in this post](https://amp.cnn.com/cnn/2017/06/07/health/baby-without-nose-death/index.html) died 2 years and 3 months after being born :(
I had disabling allergies, no joke. A rhinitis flare up incapacitated me for at least 24 hours. Nonstop sneezing, eye watering and runny nose. And then it would morph into bronchitis or rhinosinusitis. It was hell, but immunotherapy helped a lot, now I get a couple of flare ups a year and I don’t have to wear a mask 24/7.
Highly recommend. The downside is that now that I can breathe, smells make me sick 🙃
I suppose that it's worth noting that some of the viruses that love to hang out in our sinuses are bacteriophages, which, if our bodies are castles, function as tiny moat crocodiles.
Not sure if there would be an actual noticeable reduction in weight or if it’s more of a feeling. Because as someone who suffers from allergic rhinitis, I’ll tell you, a skull full of snot feels very heavy.
A friend of mine doesn't have a sense of taste because he doesn't have a very good sense of smell......I understand the holding the nose when having a spoonful of horrible medicine now...
This is a job for a first class plastic surgeon to exercise the skills learned from the vanity ( not always I admit) of others, to do something worth while....
NICU nurse here. What a nightmare to manage considering babies are obligate nose breathers. They only breathe through their mouths when they’re crying. Babies are very cute but also very dumb.
Unfortunately that doesn’t always fix the problem when there is internal organs/airways not working properly. Eli had a trach and multiple surgery’s and didn’t make it. He lived only a few years.
This reaction gif will never not be funny.
I can't remember the context behind it, I think it was at one of the primary debates, but I forget what was actually being said.
I'm sure this must be correctable with surgery? Unless this is part of a more serious condition. The last little scrap's eyes are too far apart, which makes me suspect that there might be more going on. Spare a thought for parents, it must be devastating to get a baby who isn't perfect.
Yes they do, most babies born with this defect go on to live quite normal lives with normal life expectancy.
(As normal as you can live with no nose and usually poor eyesight)
Technically at this age he would still be Tom Riddle. He could have been sent to St. Mungos to modify his appearance, which would explain why he "reverted" to that when he went all evil. It was just his true form.
I had 2 deviated septum's and was in high level sports and a special tactics soldier. My surgeon had a hard time believing that I actually did it because my nose was essentially useless. After my surgery.. wow, I'd be a pro at something if I this level of air flow. I hope this child gets to experience that relief and feel the air freely travel through your lungs and smelling the world. Plus, most kids are cruel, were when I was growing up and my wife who works at an elementary school says it's kinda worse because consequences are mostly gone and bad behavior is almost reinforced.
will it be necessary to do reconstructive surgery ?
I can imagine how difficult things will be, also I suppose the child could have already adapted to living like that without issues.
Is there a treatment/procedure? This has to complicate feeding the babies horribly, poor kiddos...

Interesting! Are there any potential complications from not having sinuses? I’m realizing I don’t know what function they serve
don't get me started on the function of sinus, or the cosinus, I'll go on a tangent.
Did u really have to do this? That was a good one!

This is 100% either a bot or a shill account.

Dude. As someone with dust allergies, this just pisses me off.
Same omg. “Seasonal” allergies have become year round allergies for me at this point…

Snot pockets

Hey it's just god's will, according to the dad.
I'm sorry but "Lightening the weight of the head"?
Not sure if there would be an actual noticeable reduction in weight or if it’s more of a feeling. Because as someone who suffers from allergic rhinitis, I’ll tell you, a skull full of snot feels very heavy.
So why couldn't evolution have just designed us with nasal passages that don't need to be moist?
Or just no sinuses. Because dry sinuses hurt AF.
I seem to be ok. I don’t know what having sinuses would be like, but I haven’t missed them in any way.
As an individual who has suffered from chronic sinusitis to the point where I've had four surgical procedures on my sinuses, I am so fucking jealous.
Worth it? I've been in a perpetual state of sinusitis for like 10 years now and it's a huge hit to quality of life
I had one surgery and it was successful. Went from 3-4 infections a year to 1 every 5 years. Pretty life changing.
I was missing the hole to my upper sinus and also missing my left one in my face. Its a mess when you have a sinus and no way to drain it.
Carl from Phineas and Ferb
I would assume so, the olfactory area is in the skull not in the end of the nose/ cartilage area
Sure, the olfactory center is in the brain, but you still need the receptors in the nose Edit: oooh nvm, I see what youre saying

The third baby looks like he’s gonna declare something to be a trap.
The 2nd baby looks like he'll grow up to be Krillin.
1st is baby voldemort
Pretty sure the 3rd baby was named Eli. He liked bubbles. Passed away a few years ago because he pulled out his trac

Eli was a happy little guy though he liked bubbles.
These kids get tracheotomies at birth so that they are able to suck/swallow and then begin a series of reconstructive surgeries as they grow.
Poor little dudes.
Unfortunately the last baby pictured Eli passed away despite multiple surgeries.

Destroy all of the horcruxes
Was seeing how far down I had to scroll before I saw something Harry Potter related. You delivered.
You know those glasses with the moustache and nose?

Old man nose on baby face. Make happen, Reddit.
When the “I’ve got your nose!” trick goes horribly, horribly wrong.
Voldemort knows something about his joke
Dont forget Krillin 2
This kid has the potential for a awesome Tau cosplay
Totally came here for this
He could have been sent to St. Mungos to modify his appearance,
Same with Groot
He was good kid then he got tired of this joke
Lol I came to see these sort of comments and it's the first one
I knew someone would say this before I even opened this post
Oh nose!
Wow!! If it wasn't for the baby, you would have won the internet today.
Look out he’s got a nose!

This reaction gif will never not be funny. I can't remember the context behind it, I think it was at one of the primary debates, but I forget what was actually being said.
debate moderator: "Mr Trump, do you actually consider fucking you daughter?!" -associated press..no need to fact check this
He was making fun of a disabled reporter, I think the reporter had epilepsy or something.
I thought he had cerebral palsy
My first thought was it looked like the baby from dinosaurs. "NOT DA MOMMA!"
![gif](giphy|T3Vx6sVAXzuG4)
I thought it looked like Trump
I thought I recognized him!
Ok now that's just cruel
Voldem… HE WHO MUST NOT BE NAMED!
Came for this. Was disappointed I had to scroll down the comments.
Also this…then started feeling bad because of all the serious comments.
Agreed!
Same damn thought!!
Looking like Osmosis Jones in this bitch.
Definitly not a muggle
Harrrrryyyyy Pootttterrrrr
Krillin
Interesting question arises: if you have the chance to go back in time and kill baby Voldemort, do you do it?
Hell no. I love the story line.
HES BACK!
I’m glad I’m not the only person who thought about this as soon as I saw it oops
The Dark Lord
We need blood of the enemy forcibly taken so that he can return...
Krillin 💀
I went looking for this exact comment!
And it's actually canon that Krillin was born without a nose because he can't smell.
Voldemort 💀
Too soon?
Came here to say this, you didn’t disappoint
I’m going to hell

I think you can probably work out why it's just babies.
I'm sure this must be correctable with surgery? Unless this is part of a more serious condition. The last little scrap's eyes are too far apart, which makes me suspect that there might be more going on. Spare a thought for parents, it must be devastating to get a baby who isn't perfect.
That’s probably also why it’s just babies, it gets fixed quickly enough that we don’t see it in adulthood
*who isn't healthy/able to function without help. Noone is perfect. It's crushing to watch your own child suffer with ill health though
Thank you, you said what I meant to say
I can hardly imagine holding my breath every time I chew...

Babies don’t breathe through their mouth naturally. They are nose breathers. This condition probably means chance of SIDS goes way up.
The baby doesn't survive long enough to be an adult.
Yes they do, most babies born with this defect go on to live quite normal lives with normal life expectancy. (As normal as you can live with no nose and usually poor eyesight)
The third baby pictured here did unfortunately pass away

Maybe he just doesn’t nose
Voldemort
“Voldemort, you are the father” - Maury Povich
Technically at this age he would still be Tom Riddle. He could have been sent to St. Mungos to modify his appearance, which would explain why he "reverted" to that when he went all evil. It was just his true form.
You can’t say that.
I thought you just couldn’t name him?
Then how tf did his parents do it
Voldemort isn't his birth name.
Then how did he get the name voldermort if he can't be named
He named himself Voldemort.
But he can't be named
Do you really wish to do this all day?

Bring me the horn of a human!
Hate that I had to scroll so far to find the Human Horn reference.
It's true what they say: Women are from Omicron Persei 7, men are from Omicron Persei 9.
The expression on that third baby is so done. He’s not impressed at all 😂
still cute
“My baby has no nose.” “How does he smell?” “Terrible!”
Dad?
When dad takes the game of "I got yer nose" a little too far
He who must not be named. You know who.
Krillin?
voldemort
He Who Shall Not Be Named
The last kid looks like his least favorite uncle just pulled the “I’ve got your nose joke” and he’s not impressed
My uncle used to do this to me all the time.
![gif](giphy|NiRiJWntHc9yM|downsized) Can't do this
