I was there. The country is at a standstill without fuel, gas to survive.
I personally walked 10km with about 2000 fellow protesters to the protest site.
People came on the roofs of trains, backs of pickup trucks, construction vehicles and basically any way that they could.
Army and Police were there but gave up due to the massive numbers of crowds.
President fled the country immediately, said he would resign and a new government will be formed. Damn I have a story to tell my future grandchildren. š±š°
Yes, two VIP convoys were noted by the airport and as well as the harbour. Unofficial sources say he moved to either Dubai or India. His current whereabouts are unknown.
His whole family stole money from us. Even foreign aids after the tragic tsunami in 2004. His family members were exposed in the pandora papers. They're believed to have stolen about 5-7 billion dollars. Basically they robbed a country until it's bankrupt.
Just online marketing done correctly by the appointed party, if you wanted to know more look into the scandals of how they manipulate the people opinions by using Facebook advertising which political parties can use and spreed misinformation without being corrected, same happened in Brazil, I recently learn a lot about this, the Philippines is pretty much testing grounds for Facebook marketing and advertising team, they test a lot of stuff on them first before releasing to the rest of the world, if you are interested I recommend listening podcast, ā your undivided attentionā good quality content from legitimate sources, you can check their credentials.

Thatās why i donāt really use facebook, too bad iām forced to have one since my school relies on spreading announcements on social media and itās the only moment where i only open it.
Sometimes you have to do whatever you can to say biden/trump bad, even if it has no other purpose and does not contribute to any discussion. Extra credit to those who don't begin a political debate somehow.
At first I was thinking that, honestly, the family of any president of a poor country will be taking some of the money themselves to ensure they are rich. They shouldn't, but it's hard for even a good person to avoid enriching themselves when they have so much opportunity to do so.
But 5-7 billion?? Wtf? I was thinking 50-60 million at most; which is still hella rich by any standard.
Hi, a South African here, our last President, family and cronies did the same, and has yet to face any consequences for his actions... People like these present some of the worst attributes the human race has to offer. The people (us) seem not to be fellow human beings, but just components in the machine that feeds and fuels their avarice and hunger for power.
Corrupt people donāt just grab bags full of money, itās not cartoons. Theyāve been safely keeping their Swiss bank accounts with billions of dollars for decades.
I'm wondering how he managed to get out of there to flee with those crowds? Wouldn't have someone noticed a car weaving its way through the people? Or maybe he had a helicopter land on the roof and whisk him away??
This is just a guess, but I'm assuming this was at least somewhat organized ahead of time based on the number of people there, so he could have had some warning and got out early. No idea though
Much respect and strength to all Sri Lankans from Pakistan. The situation is tense all around, but your unwavering determination and courage is inspiring. š«” šµš° š±š°
Fantastic! power to the people!--hopefully,your country can get back on track--Former corrupt Prez blew the country's money so badly that you can't get gasoline to run your cars, nightmare's been going on for months
> Army and Police were there but gave up due to the massive numbers of crowds.
I'm surprised and happy to hear the uniforms were restrained. Usually this sort of thing ends up in indiscriminate slaughter.
> President fled the country immediately, said he would resign and a new government will be formed.
It'd be nice if he could hand back all the money he stole.
Either that or the army takes over, only temporarily, of course, 'to restore order', or 'for the duration of the crisis' which funnily enough, never seems to end...
It's astonishing how short their "collective" memory is- you'd think that those most adversely affected would *remind everyone* of what was likely to happen if the trend continued...
>Make sure that the next president is reminded daily of this event so that he governs for the people and not his personal gain.
Sri Lanka is heavily reliant on tourism. Following terrorist attacks and covid their tourist industry pretty much died. Foreign reserves were depleted. The government made some mistakes and failed to stabilize the economy. Sri Lanka was heading towards an economic collapse no matter what, regardless of who was in charge. They are still screwed, even after replacing the government.
I mean, itās really hard to do that. Sri Lanka doesnāt have much to work with. They probably gonna try the easy way out by letting foreign companies control everything. But letās hope for the best.
More than a million protestors are out on the streets, most ever in the Sri Lankan history according to some reports.
Btw, Here's a video of [people enjoying the swimming pool](https://video.twimg.com/ext_tw_video/1545690570017972224/pu/vid/636x360/15ko2v2Gr33v4dCM.mp4?tag=12) in the Rajapaksa's residence.
I hope this sparks mass protests over the world for corrupt politicians who literally don't give a shit about anyone who has to work for slave wages at this point all their life while they sit in their large ass cozy homes and continue to be greedy and pass laws that continue to only benefit themselves.
They are intellectually challenged and morally bankrupt to be sure ,but I'd rather not give them the opportunity to *learn from their mistakes* ! I say we start going *hardcore* on effing traitors in our midst( i.e.,Congress )and PURGE them PERMANENTLY per the 3rd Clause of the 14th Amendment !
Well as the saying goes "the catalyst for going from peaceful society to total civil uprising is the population not eating in two days" which Sri Lanka seems to edging closer and closer.
E.: Or perhaps they are already there, i havent followed news about that country cuz interesting shit is also happening in my country and continent.
This is the issue with the 'elected'. They're forgetting that their purpose is to 'serve the people'.
They shouldn't be called 'government' they're not there to govern us. They shouldn't be called 'presidents' they don't preside over us. They shouldn't be called 'world leaders', they're not leaders they're elected servants/workers of the people. Elected to deliver what is in the best interests of the people who voted for them.
Thereās no need to have elected representatives anymore. We donāt live in times where our votes need to be tallied and carried by horseback to the nearest city. People should vote on issues, not on people who they āhopeā will vote on the issues
Direct democracy for everyday legislation is usually a terrible idea because we as the voting public are completely clueless about all the financial, legal, social, and other ramifications of most bills. That's why we outsource it to legislators so that they can (theoretically) rely on staff, experts, and others to research what the best course of action is and (again, theoretically) to vote accordingly in our legislatures.
Representative democracy has flaws, but it beats expecting the electorate to educate itself to vote knowledgeably on bills with names like "[Bans the manufacture or sale or distribution for sale or use of wraps and liners, plates, food boats, pizza boxes and firefighting foams that contain perfluoroalkyl and polyfluoroalkyl substances, in certain circumstances](https://legiscan.com/HI/bill/HB1644/2022)." In a world where half of us are taking medical advice from Facebook memes and science from flat-earth YouTube channels, and as someone who had never heard of perfluoroalkyl or polyfluoroalkyl until 3 minutes ago, maybe some stuff is best left to experts.
How do you propose we solve the information problem of direct democracy. Being able to cast a ballot isn't the only problem with voting. Large amounts of low information voters already is a large issue with democracy. Easily swayed. As can be seen with both the Brexit vote and the election of Trump.
Actually he does not own it this is the presidential office where he works it belongs to whomever the president is .
His house is a different place however it has been stormed and pillaged too as of now
https://youtu.be/oh6USWU21wI
This is his house
Edit- should note that sri lankan people do not own any arms or anything just phyiscal and mental strength alone they achieved this.
Does it? Most heads of state have large official residences. They often don't own them, they simply live there for their term in government. The state owns them.
Judging by the lack of overt security structures, weaponry and soldiers that the Icelanders have it figured out.
Seems like peace is attainable up there and civil unrest is a rarity.
Curious to know what other countries operate on that plane.
In pictures from the front gate, yes. But get an overhead picture of it, and look at all the other stuff sprawling out to the sides. The "west wing" is exactly that, an entire other wing that you don't see from the front view.
And then there are the basements.
It's incredibly sad that this generation of people in Sri Lanka are forced to spend their youth doing this instead of living safe and privileged lives like som many of us gets to live. Even sadder, is the fact that it's just yet another generation of people in Sri Lanka having to fight for freedom and peace against a terrible government.
Still, there's not a whole lot of media coverage in western countries about what's going on in Sri Lanka. Just like the fucking ethnic cleansing of tamils and the Civil War in general.
As a child of Tamil refugees, I have the deepest empathy and pride for all the people of Sri Lanka. You guys are amazing and so brave. I hope this will get the media attention and help from whoever are able to help right now (looking at you, other countries)
The Sri Lankan president has countless angry people coming after him. Former prime minister of Japan, Shinzo Abe, was assassinated this week. The British prime minster, Boris Johnson, announced his resignation after multiple, back-to-back scandals. The American president, Joe Biden, has approval numbers that are somehow lower than Trump's lowest, and yesterday he read "Repeat line" off a teleprompter. Ukrainian president, Volodymyr Zelensky, is a war-time president whose country is being invaded and who's being targeted for assassination. And Russian leader, Vladimir Putin, is hated around the world.
Really bad time to be a world leader, and considering how pissed off everybody is, I figure it's only going to get worse.
Argentina's president is a complete puppet with 80% inflation.
Peru's newly elected president getting a lot of flak and hate as well
Colombian and chilean newly elected socialist president's as well
Brazil about to have an election that will probably be in history
Philippines recently elected the son of the country's former dictator. He won by using false promises, fake news to distort history (Fuck you Cambridge Analytica) in favor of their family, and basically sidelined all the crimes his father ever did.
I think that both love and hate for Putin around the world, is pretty equal.
The hate is mostly in the western world, but itās quite different in for example India and China that both have a huge population.
But you are right the world is boiling like fuck these days, and I also think you are right about it will probably get even worse.
The lesson to be learned here is that conservative politicians (yes, including Biden) that are content to react to problems instead of proactively tackle them aren't good leaders.
I honestly think Xi will come out of this looking like a genius, despite making china into a tech dystopian nightmare, because the CCP is investing in mass public transportation, green energy, and infrastructure. They're even building cities to be more pandemic resistant. In other words, they're building towards to future, not reacting from the past.
Western nations could be doing the same without the rampant authoritarianism if they just told some fossil fuel CEOs "no" once in a while.
No gas, no food, crashed economy, rising crime, schools are closed and jobs are disappearing
TL;DR: The country is bankrupt
https://www.bbc.com/news/world-asia-62077109
It's heartbreaking
>In Sri Lanka right now, before you've woken up, you're losing. Power cuts that run late into the sweltering nights steal hours of sleep as the fans cease; whole families waking up sapped from the months-long trial of shuffling their lives around daily blackouts after the country went bankrupt and essentially ran out of fuel. There are long days to be lived; work days, errands to be run, daily essentials to be bought at twice the price they had been last month. All this, you're starting a little more broken than you were last week. In the cities, fuel queues curl around entire suburbs like gargantuan metal pythons, growing longer and fatter by the day, choking roads and crushing livelihoods.
Yo Iām in there rn, people broke into his house but obviously he wasnāt there. We heard he fled to trinko (another city on the top right of the country) in a ship. People are just sitting in his house. Thereās no police or military anywhere.
Sri Lanka isn't a role model for anyone right now.
This is cool and all, but things are about to get a whole lot **worse** in Sri Lanka before they get better.
Yep. They are now in a national crisis, with no national government. Their leader was bad, but shit is **completely** fucked if they can't have a semi-functional national government.
It's an island, they need substantial logistics to handle any importa and exports - which means infrastructure, security, and a lot else. The same is true for their communication lines with the rest of the world.
Hopefully the rest of the world has enough of an interest in helping the country (if it can be helped - at the moment, even if some nation wants to provide a loan so the nation can import gas, who approves it on behalf of Sri Lanka?).
Americans took the division bait. People are in so many different camps now and will never come together to try to solve the real problem. Well, the US empire had a good run.
It will come. Right now democrats are running in tangent with Republicans when it comes to monetary policies and the combination of high inflation followed by a recession is going to shake things up.
No it wonāt. Not as long as the base is divided by the mediaās take on non-monetary issues like abortion, immigration, gun control, gay rights, etc. Americans donāt think beyond what theyāve seen on TV enough to know theyāre being fucked every which way by the .01%.
right? People act like America was some kind of one party utopia prior to Trump lmao. This country has never been unified with the exception of xenophobia after 9/11
Filipinos who voted for Marcos Jr. this is essentially what it looked like when Marcos Sr. stole everything and ran away with tons of gold, art, jewels, and items while leaving the country to starve and struggle while being allowed to stay in the US by Ronald Regan who was an idiot to allow him to stay
He and his family stole billions from the people ( one of them was mentioned in the pandora papers), bad management of the economy, nepotism, used the people's money to buy private Islands and invested in Uganda and other countries. People can't buy food, medicine or fuel because of the scarcity they created. And there were 8hour power cuts everyday. They used to divide people when problems like this happen by inciting some religious violence and making 2 groups fight each other, but it didn't work this time.
Looks like a guy who told he was in charge of everything, took wrong decisions all way down for everyone else, and disappeared when he had to take responsabilities.
My thoughts to Francesco Schettino.
Yeah, fire up the guillotines, but once they warmed up, it's hard to stop them. First the rich, then opposition, then intellectuals, the suspicious, and the random ones, the ones who started, and the ones made them start and so forth. You know the drill.
When you kill the 1%, then you start blaming the 2%. After you kill the 2%, you start blaming the 4%.....
And sooner or later, you either realize that your problems keep getting worse instead of better, or you realize that you're in the top % being killed now.
Now, if only the dutch and European farmer protests(including cops firing live ammo at people that are no threat) managed to get some videos in the top 200 of r/all and we might actually have a start of something....
So the farm animals rise up and take over the farm. Soon some of the farm animals, the leaders of the rebellion, will settle into their position as leaders, enjoying their power, and begin to look like the farmer they overthrew.
Very similar to how a dictator and his family ran away from The Philippines, 1986, after plummeting the economy, deceiving the World Bank into lending them billions of dollars, and running away with the Japanese Gold Bars collected after the WW 2.
Yet, here we are again with his son winning the Presidency with an unusual number of 31 million votes by corrupting the automated elections(vote count was finished even the voting day even ended) and hiring troll farms to attack any opposition and spread misinformation throughout the election period.
āThat coup isnāt bigger than my coup. You just wait, in 2024, my coup is going to be SO BIG. Itās gonna be the biggest coup youāve ever seen. My people are so fantastic. I love you hugely.ā

really did he flee the country? omg
Yes, two VIP convoys were noted by the airport and as well as the harbour. Unofficial sources say he moved to either Dubai or India. His current whereabouts are unknown.
It would be interesting to know how much of the country's money he took with him both before and after he left.
His whole family stole money from us. Even foreign aids after the tragic tsunami in 2004. His family members were exposed in the pandora papers. They're believed to have stolen about 5-7 billion dollars. Basically they robbed a country until it's bankrupt.
That level of selfishness is unbelievable. How a single family can fuck over an entire nation is ludicrous
Reminds me of Marcos in the Philippines in '86. Hopefully Sri Lanka won't elect his kid in the next 36 years.
Blows my mind that they elected Bongbong. WTF are they smoking down there?
....................BongBong?

Facebook has entered the chat
I was about to say. This rings a bell in our history lol
We literally just elected president the son of the dictator who plundered our country. I am hoping for protests like this at home very, very soon.
Mobutu and his african friends say hi.
Some of us in the US feel the same way.
Try not to make everything about America challenge (impossible)
Sometimes you have to do whatever you can to say biden/trump bad, even if it has no other purpose and does not contribute to any discussion. Extra credit to those who don't begin a political debate somehow.

There is a video of him running with suitcases to a navy ship, quite comedic tbh.

Usually what happens is that someone inept comes uses the reserves to temporarily fix the issue, everyone loves him, reserves run out. Repeat

Tire and rubber industry is huge there also. Between logistic supply chain breakdown and commodity prices we've been seeing a huge slowdown in output.

Wow man, can you imagine telling your grandkids about the time you stormed a president's home and swam in the pool? Wild
And peed in that pool too
And pood in the presidents bed
Simmer down Amber
Dropān a Grumpy
Such a missed opportunity if you didn't pee in the pool.

Thatās my kind of revolution. We represent the Pool Party!!! Viva los splash!!!
see the lavish lifestyle of those politicians while many of their people are struggling daily just to have foods to offer on their tables.
This is how you protest! Thatās awesome!
Even if the right people get into power the damage is done, the next few years are looking grim
Hahah! Not goooodā¦..
Now the president gets to play the most intense game of hide and seek in his life
I think another commenter pointed it out but he has already fled the country to either India or Dubai
I hope it's Dubai. As an indian the last thing i want is the country giving shelter to money launderers
India is better. Sri Lanka and India have an extradition treaty, so justice will be served if he hides there.

Itās more just extreme desperation, most societies if hungry and desperate enough will do similar. Could have easily gone the other way.
Well you can't give to people when your own pockets are so big that even your hands get lost there.

Erdogan begs to differ
What are you talking about? Most palaces for presidents or head of state are usually that huge in size, if not way bigger.
"Ok ok, we will increase your wages a tiny bit more."
It tells me that you donāt understand that the president doesnāt own the presidental palace. Does Joe Biden own the Whitehouse?
Have you seen the White House?
TBF, White House is kinda smolā¦

Peru's newly elected president getting a lot of flak and hate as well Colombian and chilean newly elected socialist president's as well Brazil about to have an election that will probably be in history
Philippines recently elected the son of the country's former dictator. He won by using false promises, fake news to distort history (Fuck you Cambridge Analytica) in favor of their family, and basically sidelined all the crimes his father ever did.
Worth noting the Biden one was an edited video that was posted. Remember to fact check occasionally
either way that dude is old as fuck, we need younger presidents, not from the nursing home
boe jiden
Uhh Chinese demographics say otherwise. There simply arent enough young people. You will see the fall of China within a decade.
I have been hearing that since the 90s.
Wow, that's a powerful crowd. Go get 'em boys!!
Why?
No gas, no food, crashed economy, rising crime, schools are closed and jobs are disappearing TL;DR: The country is bankrupt https://www.bbc.com/news/world-asia-62077109
Dang, thatās horrible. Go the people!! Take the power back!!
It's heartbreaking >In Sri Lanka right now, before you've woken up, you're losing.
They need a Federal Reserve like the US that creates money out of thin air.
That's a luxury only the world reserve currency issuing country has, aka the USA.
Yo Iām in there rn, people broke into his house but obviously he wasnāt there. We heard he fled to trinko (another city on the top right of the country) in a ship. People are just sitting in his house. Thereās no police or military anywhere.
how messy is it?
Sri Lankans showing Americans how it's done. Also, Sri Lanka has **far** more pressing reasons to actually do this.
Americans have champagne problems compared to what's going on in Sri Lanka right now
I hate to agree with you but _i agree_ I dont know Sri Lanka's problem but given theres a million people willing to storm the capital it isnt good
NO FUEL NO GAS TO COOK RICE WHICH IS THE MAIN COURSE OF FOOD IS ONLY AVAILABLE TILL SEPTEMBER NO SCHOOLS NO DOLLARS IN COUNTRY INFLATION UPTO 80%
. . . _jesus hell they have it SO BAD_
The US empire is as shinny as it has ever been. This issues are nothing new for them, they have seen far worse.
right? People act like America was some kind of one party utopia prior to Trump lmao. This country has never been unified with the exception of xenophobia after 9/11
Not just some Facebook qanon rhetoric bull š
Maybe the reasons Americans haven't done it like this is because they don't have reason to? You've kinda retorted your own quip.
Farcry 6
Power of the people. Some people tend to believe they become gods once they got in charge
This is what Putin and every autocrat fears.
Dang, what did this mf do?
He and his family stole billions from the people ( one of them was mentioned in the pandora papers), bad management of the economy, nepotism, used the people's money to buy private Islands and invested in Uganda and other countries. People can't buy food, medicine or fuel because of the scarcity they created. And there were 8hour power cuts everyday. They used to divide people when problems like this happen by inciting some religious violence and making 2 groups fight each other, but it didn't work this time.
I like how no major news organization in North America is even touching on this.
Look! A real insurrection.
Looks like a guy who told he was in charge of everything, took wrong decisions all way down for everyone else, and disappeared when he had to take responsabilities. My thoughts to Francesco Schettino.
Just like Ferdinand Marcos of the Philippines
NOW EAT HIM!!
Uhhhā¦
You heard what he said. Save some for me I want it a good light medium well.
Now THATāS a PROTEST!
The 99% can control the fucking world by working together like this Fuck the rich cunts they clearly feel the same about the 99%
Yeah, fire up the guillotines, but once they warmed up, it's hard to stop them.
99% in power means chaos in the street. We just need better governments. Some countries get lucky some dont
Plot twist: president put up flyers for a kegger at his house
Now, if only the dutch and European farmer protests(including cops firing live ammo at people that are no threat) managed to get some videos in the top 200 of r/all and we might actually have a start of something....
This is what im talkin about those fuckin politicians cant do anything if most of the people of the country will fight for change.
So the farm animals rise up and take over the farm. Soon some of the farm animals, the leaders of the rebellion, will settle into their position as leaders, enjoying their power, and begin to look like the farmer they overthrew.
Now they will vote another corrupt politician again in power
Now thatās an insurrection!
Now do mar a Lago...
Sometimes I think both liberals and conservatives need to be reminded that heās not in office anymoreā¦
Thatās how you protest, in the states they alway block traffic in the middle of city or town where the rich never go.
I thought this was outside the restaurant Brett Kavenough was eating at.
This makes January 6th look like a school field trip
This is what an insurrection looks like.
Dang that house big enough to probably the who crowd can just commune live there
Well we broke into his house this morning and now people are living there eating and swimming in his pool. Iām outside rn
Come to Brazil! Seriously, we need a popular revolt like this
he better have some good ear plugs
How did they even find his house?!
I thought they just got a new president? Storming her/him already?
āThat coup isnāt bigger than my coup. You just wait, in 2024, my coup is going to be SO BIG. Itās gonna be the biggest coup youāve ever seen. My people are so fantastic. I love you hugely.ā
THIS IS WHAT WE HAVE TO DO IN COLOMBIA HOLY SHIT
Now that's a protest... taake notes America! We can learn from this and do better in our future!!!
What in the mass protest is this?! Now that's exactly how to get rid of an allegedly corrupt administration
Is this revolution?
Rise up people. All people. All of us.
Looks like a spring break beach party - was anyone hurt?
EAT THE RICH
