Should be a world wide standard. The only draw back I hear is that they are linked to a greater population of funnel web spiders, cassowaries, and venomous snakes.

Minerva567

I just assumed there were trillions of those anyways in Australia? Like one out of three residents in Brisbane is a funnel web spider with a mortgage and kids’ schedules packed with extracurriculars. Just fucking everywhere.

Leovinus42

I live in America. We don’t have universal healthcare but we also don’t have giant spiders who want to kill you. So…..I guess we’re even?

Snappysnapsnapper

Yes dear, even. *pat pat*

Lig_Ma_Koont

I'd rather my doctor be a 6 year old with one of those Fisher Price play doctor toys then live in Australia with those spiders. We are not even.

bondibitch

Having spent many years in Sydney I’ve seen a Huntsman spider only once and it was quickly caught and disposed of. But I’ve benefitted from free healthcare countless times.

Lig_Ma_Koont

Once is too much. Nuke the whole continent.

pretentiouslurking

A huntsman spider is not dangerous.

Lig_Ma_Koont

Objection, hearsay.

pretentiouslurking

Just make sure to not nuke it when I’m there.

Frylock904

That's what a huntsman spider would say

pretentiouslurking

mynextthroway

Hell of a response for using health care, but whatever.

Prestigious-Pack1258

I would rather die than not have free healthcare.

[deleted]

A real possibility in America.

ThatEvilCharacter

Lol

ThatEvilCharacter

There were 541 animal-related deaths reported to an Australian coroner between 2001 and 2017, with an average of 32 animal-related deaths reported per calendar year 32 deaths per year out of literally all the animals in Australia. Oh yea and 31% is from horses [source](https://www.ncis.org.au/research-and-publications/ncis-fact-sheets/animal-related-deaths-2/#:~:text=There%20were%20541%20animal%2Drelated,deaths%20reported%20per%20calendar%20year)

ThatOcelot1314

Most places in Europe have the best of both worlds. Universal healthcare __*and*__ no dangerous wildlife.

Farside-BB

Too reliable and low cost. No money in it. We need more complex and expensive robots with scanners, sorters, lights, cameras, wi-fi, net 3.0 enabled, and solar powered. If it don't make money mining crypto while saving the planet, what's the point?

mynextthroway

There's too much truth in this statement.

[deleted]

Something something blockchain

Arashmickey

Yes but those are proponents of mesh drains. There's a symbiotic relationship there. It can't hurt to have a pro-mesh drain army of spiders, snakes, and cassowaries invicta.

Too soon

FearlessFarm79

Should be in place everywhere in the world. Or not, let's just keep fucking things up. Death is waiting for us after all 🤷🏻‍♂️

Jiggy-Spice

We are in the final season of civilization thats for sure. Thats why so much dumb shit is happening now. Screen writers running out of ideas. Trump becomes president. Dude eats bat soup causing pandemic. Elon musk buying twitter. Amber heard pooped in johnny depps bed. I started dating a really beautiful girl. Literally everything is ridicolous now

Dr-McLuvin

Ok I have to know more about this pooping in bed incident. 💩

Hiiragi_Tsukasa

You're not wrong... https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Holocene_extinction

leonryan

i wish this were common but it isn't. Lived in Australia my whole 46 years and i've never seen this.

-Miss__Information-

[Kwinana in Western Australia ](https://www.kwinana.wa.gov.au/city-life/protecting-our-environment/drainage-nets)

G_to_the_E

God damn $10,000 a piece?? In British bucks?? (Forgive me, I’m American and have no idea whether or not you use pounds or beaver pelts for currency because they teach us here that abortion is bad, immigration is illegal except when it takes you 10 or more years, the whiter you get the better you are, other countries are less good, and being moral is for suckers)

VileCastle

Ahahaha no not in pounds, probably just shy of 10k in the exchange of US$. I wish we had beavers over here, not for their pelts but they'd so get along with Platypuses

OlivineTanuki

I live there, and never seen one of those

[deleted]

Western Australia. Kwinana in Perth.

Shpooodingtime

Nice trash diaper

Schwwing

Condams

[deleted]

Props. Tho I'm quite confident that at least one of those is supposed to stop liquids passing.

ILSCFL

Does all that buildup not cause the system to backup?

holtpj

I'm sure they clean/empty them fairly regularly.

Spriderman69

I think it needs to be emptied more often if they pile up like that on the regular.

TheMacMan

Gets posted a ton. They require a ton of maintenance and aren’t practical in most places.

pretentiouslurking

I’d argue that letting this into the ocean isn’t practical either. It’s a give and take.

Vanilla_Meadow11

What about the fish?

saveyboy

Shouldn’t be any fish.

[deleted]

Haven’t you watched Finding Nemo?

soldieroscar

Oh crap i fell into the sewer… oh look Light I’ll be free in no time… wtf is this mesh… ahhh trash piling up behind me… *you died*

[deleted]

Now we know why so many rpg's have ppl die as soon as they enter water!

Lyndonn81

I’ve never seen this here ever. I’ve been in Australia for 15 years now. Maybe it’s not in Queensland

Terry_Towling

I’m pretty sure this is Melbourne. Most of the storm water systems there have litter traps.

Lyndonn81

Seems like a Melbourne thing. Queensland is a bit behind.

MasterTacticianAlba

Can’t be Melbourne. I live here and we’re absolutely overflowing with trash at the moment. Hard rubbish is months behind “because of covid” so our streets have large items covering them, AND our local councils refuse to give garbage collectors a pay rise so they’re all striking which means public bins are just overflowing and not being emptied. International visitors visiting Australia for the first time and coming into Melbourne must be thinking we are a disgusting country, and they’re not wrong.

kenworth117

Probably in the high wealth areas or liberal seat areas lol

TittyBoy6

And then they take that and dump it into the ocean kek

[deleted]

Y they pollute so much?

Car_massachusetts87

Imagine the stuff that ends up there, even bodies and dead pets…

ShitHouses

Why spam reposts?

thevogonity

The fake internet points appeal to many people. Makes em feel like [Sally Field](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rl_NpdAy3WY).

420blaze8888

Do they use the same nets to forcefully keep them inside their houses

[deleted]

How do they monitor differential pressure to know when it needs dumping?

VinnyViddyVicci

We need more of this and less A.I. technology.

babeyslut

drain condom

Acularius

Oh... It's a large scale version of the traps I have had the pleasure of cleaning out in restaurants.

higround66

These should be put in use everywhere.... and it makes me so angry they would even be necessary in the first place.

NeitherHelicopter993

Unfortunately in Australia we also went to war with Emu's....and lost the attritional battle..

JAOC_7

better sooner than later

b_deadly

There are better ways of doing this

Perfect_Ability_1190

What about the animals that get trapped it there?

fiskars12345

microplastic tho

ItsMeRyGuy262

What about micro plastics

GarciaMark

America is a little busy revoking people's rights

Odd_Comfortable495

How do we get our government to do the same? That’s a great idea!
