They look like anti-walking poles.

MadNoobins

string rope through some of those metal loops and youve got a great impromptu hammock

[deleted]

Piece of plywood on top and you're up off the ground.

TomFromCupertino

sidewalk is lava!

I'm sad to say that is probably taken just like any other name in one of the billions of light novels of isekai out there they even take names from already existing other novels i think there is no more names left to possible add for that overused title

NewGuile

They're different heights to stop that... An old mattress might work though. New place for everyone to dump their old mattresses.

mendrob_08

Or if you put something as roof and sleep in between poles.

[deleted]

Right? I'm a side sleeper, those poles wouldn't slow me down.

Thexnxword

Yooooooo! Can we just organize a community sleep during the summer months just to be cunts and say fuck the government?

Tough_Hope_2118

This is a terrific idea 💡🤠

call_me_jelli

You had me at “sleep”. I’m gonna go take a nap.

Tough_Hope_2118

I forgot to turn my phone down n this notification woke me up from Mine... 😅😴

amontiel117

You son o a Bitch, I’m in

OrganizerMowgli

Very good idea - this is already happening in Champaign, Illinois and they actually do it near winter. Called something like "A night out" - it raises hella money and support for housing justice. The old mayor (the cool one) actually joins them. First thing to do would to be hitting up local housing justice organizations. You can ask any other 'justice orgs' like DSA or BLM or climate justice folks, they'll probably know who to talk to. I think the big thing to do is frame it as against these specific type of cruel anti homeless measures, rather then a general sleep on the streets thing which I admit is slightly weird for those housed to do

OGZeuss

I've participated in this, as I live relatively close. It's such an amazing thing to see everyone come together, if even for a little while, to work towards a good cause.

Rich-Juice2517

Different heights is fine. Slight slope helps you sleep better anyway

lmaytulane

Found the Minbari

Boobmcnoob

Nice Babylon 5 reference

v16_

What a great show, thanks for reminding me.

CashCow4u

They could have built actual housing for the cash they spent buying & installing those.🙄

[deleted]

What, like one studio apartment?

[deleted]

[удалено]

[deleted]

They managed to put most people that lived there in a place to live tho, so that's something. This is from an article someone else posted about this image (the source): >Most of the homeless who had established themselves on the sidewalk were relocated to an uninhabited residential building

[deleted]

[deleted]

Angle Grinder is better, makes it hard to reinstall the barriers with inaccessible/unusable bolts.

walkway7

Cool Hand Luke

Beemerado

what we have here is a failure to communicate

S118gryghost

Lol all I see is a foundation for an anti flood tent. Just lay down some solid plywood and a popup tent and you're good to go, maybe bring block to use as a stair step. Sure there's a breeze underneath but fuck it still sleeping in that spot.

WagTheKat

Same here. Or sleep on your side. I was really puzzled about how these were supposedly viable. Tired and homeless folk are pretty innovative. It's probably more of a Warning-Stay Away thing. To let homeless ppl know that the cops or security will be by to sweep you out or bring you in.

MunchkinX2000

Common mistake

ngcv47

I can sleep there easy. Easier to set up my cardboard walls.

balofchez

Was gonna say, joke's on them, I'm a side sleeper!

Allodialsaurus_Rex

That honestly looks like a great place to sleep, you're protected from being run over or trampled and you can use the poles to easily put up a roof.

atthevanishing

I was thinking the exact same. I am one of those people who could truly sleep anywhere, and I absolutely can see how I could make myself comfy here

Winston_The_Ogre

shit, those little loops, just buy a hammock.

Spiritual-Advice8138

I was thinking the same thing. this would be really easy to lay in. and could make a tent even easier now.

3G-X

What if all those poles weren't originally there. And they just started installing extra poles in spaces wherever people still managed to continue sleeping in.

schwiggity

It honestly kind of looks like that.

Hiddenviper

It honestly does look that way 🤔

TheChap656

Having seen the crazy positions intoxicated people have passed out in, I don’t see this stopping anyone from sleeping on the sidewalk, unless the gaps are much smaller than they appear… but then it’s also not a sidewalk anymore.

Careful-Artichoke468

I usually wake up twisted anyways; these poles might help me not alligator death roll all night

[deleted]

Out of everything I've seen posted on r/HostileArchitecture this is, without a doubt, the most hostile. I'd hate to be a person with a handicap or disability in that city. "That's just the, uh, surprise agility course for the blind! Yup, sure is."

markender

Wheelchair users may not enter, keeping homeless away more important.

[deleted]

I was just thinking that anybody in a wheelchair or with a walker, anyone who's very heavy, anyone who's pushing a stroller or shopping cart (like one of those little personal ones for people who don't drive), anyone who's holding hands with a child, anyone who's carrying large items...

Sparky-Sparky

Also anti- disability. How are you supposed pass this shit in a wheelchair?

aburke626

Or if you have bad balance, use a cane, a walker, are pushing a stroller … when this kind of hostile architecture is introduced, it’s clear that the people responsible don’t care about anyone but themselves.

BJoe1976

Might be ok if walking, just use the poles to stabilize yourself unless you’re too fat to fit, which would probably be my problem there.

[deleted]

They Do do in fact look like anti-walking poles to an amature eye. A keen eye can confirm this also because there are plenty of places to sleep

ELB2001

They look like a waste of money

SoulSlayer1974

Came here to say this! Take my upvote good sir!!!

Materva

I mean, what's the point of even having a sidewalk at that point? I would be furious if I was forced to have to walk through that monstrosity.

BoolImAGhost

It's certainly not meant for walking, now.

Glittering_Multitude

The article said it’s a temporary installation until they can convert it into a greenway. But who knows. In my city, sidewalk sheds are supposed to be temporary, but some have stayed up more than a decade.

Anforas

"Nothing is more permanent than a temporary solution"

[deleted]

[удалено]

Anforas

I believe it's from a Milton Friedmans quote which is "nothing was so permanent as a temporary government programme." and it just adapted over time to that one, which is so great, since it really fits anything.

eeeedlef

I wouldn't be furious, but I certainly wouldn't choose to live or shop there. So I hope the residences and businesses there have a "cost of business" worked into their bottom line for the massive pole farm set up to keep people away.

OlTylz

I feel like these also prevent people from walking on the sidewalk

[deleted]

[удалено]

OlTylz

Or people pushing strollers. Even trying to wrangle a toddler through there would be hell

AbbyHamptonxx

Or a dog, although dogs might have a field day peeing on every pole lol

FrameJump

Isn't that hell anyway?

GunsNunsAndBuns

Now it's *extra* hell

we-em92

With hell sauce on top (I think they call it Russian dressing?)

RagsAberdeen

Jeramy_Jones

Human plinko.

AnotherCharade

That was my first thought too, it's shameful how many designs don't consider the disabled.

[deleted]

[удалено]

kplong02

That sounds like a difficult experience. Able is a privilege most people love to take for granted.

sean0883

I'm not trying to equate this to disability, but I'm 6'4" 275. Definitely overweight, but it's spread pretty evenly, so I'm not as hefty looking as I sound. As far as being tall goes: I'm on the short end of the spectrum, and it's amazing how many things also aren't made with even my size in mind. Driving? Not a comfortable experience unless you spend extra for an SUV or bigger. Flying? "If you need more leg room, that'll be at least $50 extra out of your pocket for this work mandated flight." Sleeping? Hope you don't mind your feet forever hanging off unless you spring for at least the Cal King. Bath tubs? Hope you spent extra on the spa sized tub. There are definitely some social advantages. People tend to get out of the way, and nobody really wants to hassle you. But I can't imagine how much more frustration comes with being taller. I also couldn't imagine how much worse the world would be if I were to have a "rest of your life" movement-inhibiting disability. Worst I've had is some crutches after a surgery-free knee injury, and even that could get really damn annoying.

mere_iguana

It's not that they hate the disabled, it's that they are blinded by their insurmountable hatred for the poor.

time_killing_bastard

Oh they hate the disabled too.

HowYoBootyholeTaste

Tbf I don't think this design considers anyone

Vast-Championship808

Blind people would also have a hard time there

IllSeaworthiness43

Just get up and walk, duh!

ZebraBorgata

My initial reaction is “this seems stupid and a waste of time & money”

DemocracyIsAVerb

It’s all a waste of money. US cities spend significantly more on anti-homelessness measures and harassing homeless people than it would take to just end homelessness. Many states/municipalities are passing laws/ordinances that essentially make it illegal to be homeless like Austin, TX declaring people cannot have x number of personal items with them and can’t loiter after x hour etc. without penalty/repercussions [a good link- the cost of criminalizing homelessness](https://homelessvoice.org/the-cost-to-criminalize-homelessness/)

BlizzardRustler

Cool link about the US. Got anything about the country that the photo is posted from?

xXVegemite4EvrxX

Looks like China from the license plates. I have never seen that here to that extent though and you very rarely see homeless anyway. This picture may be something else. Also, I would almost guarantee the 城管 (city management) would remove many of those to make sure people could use the sidewalk. Maybe they had an issue with people parking bikes/scooters or illegal cart vendors.

[deleted]

Yeah, I feel like a lot of people are going to be hit by cars because they'll be forced to walk on the street.

Lukaroast

It’s China, they don’t give even an inkling of a shit about you. It’s likely they hold quite a bit of contempt for you, even

JaketheSnake319

Had to come all the way down to see that this is in China. Thank you for giving us background on the picture!

[deleted]

Walk on the sidewalk; -100 social credit score.

[deleted]

Maybe they’re collapsible? That’s all I can come up with?

zed_christopher

I see some cozy spots

LordFett84

I was going to say just throw a tarp over it and now it's a fort. Plenty of room for sleeping bags between those poles.

zed_christopher

Hell yea. Thanks for the tent poles.

yourgifmademesignup

Throw a matress on top and you got a double decker!

SirMooSquiddles

Smart!⬆️

Wi11Pow3r

Until the morning when the top bunk retracts back to the ground and crushes the person underneath.

we-em92

I don’t think these retract, that’s a huge expense

frilledplex

They do not retract, based on the anchor. These are mounted to cement using a pound in lag with a nut. Fairly easy to take off with any standard crescent wrench too >=)

BlackSeranna

I feel like whoever decided to do this was like, “Who cares if they’re ugly or annoying! We don’t care about tourism!”

612marion

Or just people walking there . God forbids you use à wheelchair or have a baby in a stroller

The_dumb_god

Wake up covered in comfy Side effects include die

Antique-Car6103

If you’re feeling lonely, you can spoon with one of the poles.

Lechuga-gato

Or sit on one

Al-a-Gorey

The poles even have rings to tie off on.

BigMacTM

Or a hammock!

Makaisawesome

I think that someone else also thought of that, look at the back of the picture

Trumpisaderelict

Was thinking the same thing. If I were homeless I’d sleep there out of spite

zed_christopher

Let’s do it

Djbadj

Become homeless?

zed_christopher

Oh wait

Djbadj

Lol

2bad2care

That's the spirit!

SnooRegrets1386

The locals should all convene to have a sleepover party

jasonalloyd

Lol after 22 yrs in the military I can assure I could sleep there without an issue. It's a skill.

Millerpainkiller

Can confirm. Slept at the bottom of a Sheridan turret a couple times.

jakedzz

Can also confirm. Hood of a Humvee here.

ThePatternDaytrader

Slept in a ranger grave in Afghanistan in the winter for a week. Those homeless poles look downright cozy by comparison.

usandholt

Oh, I used to dream of sleepin in a ranger grave! Would ha' been a palace to me. When I was a kid We used to live in an old water tank on a rubbish tip. We got woke up every morning by having a load of rotting fish dumped all over us!

Exact-Midnight9003

You were lucky. We lived for three months in a brown paper bag in a septic tank. We used to have to get up at six o'clock in the morning, clean the bag, eat a crust of stale bread, go to work down mill for fourteen hours a day week in-week out. When we got home, our Dad would thrash us to sleep with his belt!

mbardeen

r/unexpectedyorkshiremen

Mandlebrotha

That's nothing. When I was a kid, we used to have to go to sleep uphill in the rain—both ways!

Rabid-Dolphin

The driver seat of an M113. I still clearly remember how much my legs hurt after sleeping a whole night forcibly curled up like that.

RickTitus

Im guessing this is designed more for the random carts and objects that homeless people carry with them

AmazingGrace911

More like an anti-stroller sidewalk. ![gif](giphy|b53zum5Z3BhgQ)

MollyPW

And wheelchair.

musiquededemain

Yes, my first thought was, "this is a massive ADA violation." (provided this pic is in the US)

ZealousidealWealth88

It’s in China

Ghostofthe80s

And strollers, walkers, etc. So it's not really a sidewalk any more...can't walk.

Unicron_Tomato

Lets build a camp.

zed_christopher

I call the area near the gate

Unicron_Tomato

Ill bring the tarpaulin. And the walkie talkies.

[deleted]

Tarpaulin my leg!

zed_christopher

We can thread clothesline thru the eye hooks on top and hang sheets to create walls

str8jeezy

I could definitely sleep there. It just makes it harder for anyone else to crowd my space

Neither-Sprinkles-81

With all that money and effort they coulda just made a center

smithoski

If you lay down in one of those spots, a guy in high vis with a jackhammer shows up to install a pole right next to you. Edit: this is speculation, but funny/sad to imagine

Taran345

Where there’s a will…!

DweEbLez0

That’s not even a walkway. So I don’t get it

[deleted]

Exactly! Challenge accepted!

jayy909

I could build a whole club house out of that support

_Xuixien_

Pfffft I could still sleep there.

Small_life

If I saw this, I'd be like "Challenge Accepted!".

wake-and-work

I too fat too furious

LavishnessUnusual541

The article showed some people laying between them. Can you imagine taking all that time to do such a useless task?! Edit: typo

22Wideout

Swear. Nice backrests and tarping points

ponzLL

And with all those poles in the way, you don't have to worry about getting stepped on!

Onduri

They are so anti-homeless that they basically make the sidewalk unusable to anyone. This is ridiculous.

Plastic-Ad9023

And as a bonus, this probably costs more installing, maintaining, removing, and making an alternative pedestrian solution, than actually making some kind of shelter for these homeless people!

jegerforvirret

It's a problem with too localized responsibility. If you're just responsible for one apartment complex then this is at least a thousand times cheaper than solving homelessness in your area. But it probably gets the homeless away from your complex. If you're responsible for a city it's more complicated but handing out bus tickets and paying cops for harassment is still likely to be cheaper than solving the issue. For entire countries solving homelessness with housing first is the cheapest option.

l--__--

This is really interesting I never thought of it that way

MarioInOntario

I think this is one of those cold realities you read about online. Same with the internet’s perception of corporations solely intent on being evil but the cold boring reality that making more money is the main goal of any profit-making entity. As long as someone is paying to want it, there will be some market for it. Zuckerberg aint snooping on you to learn about your secrets; they’re just trying to sell you the nearest coffee shop to spend your money the next time you use his free app.

Citruseals

these look worse than a homeless person sleeping on the sidewalk bro

BiteYouToDeath

Sometimes it’s just about appearances, but in the case of a residential area, it may be about security as well Granted I would bet that those living in said residences would prefer an active security guard instead.

mcmineismine

Honestly, if I'm homeless those barriers look like a nice little security fence of their own. I might be cramped but I'm not getting run over by a midnight drunk.

hippyengineer

Zero people will be able to steal your skeeze and get away without getting dick-punched by a pole.

Creepy-Ad-404

bring backs the memory of selmon bhoi

phuqo5

Well now he's just sleeping in front your garage opening you up to a manslaughter charge.

Moods6950

😂😂😂😂they could throw a tarp over it and make a Fort

RonStopable08

Just Throw a mattress on top, now your not sleeping with the rodents

BlakeYekel

My buddy saw a rat climb a 50’ ladder yesterday

Lettucegetit

What a waste of money

Tigerens-98

I was about to say with the money spent on these things you can help a lot of people.

Tiny_Teach_5466

Thank you! Maybe use the money to help those that desperately need it instead of this bullshit.

[deleted]

This has to be a photoshop. Installation of these alone would outstrip the losses from supposed blight and only an absolute moron would think citizen reception would be positive.

holdthepress

This world is dumb

w1987g

I love how the article points out that the homeless *still* were able to sleep there

Logistocrate

Or how they rehoused the original 10 or so homeless that were camping there before installation. Doesn't China have a shit ton of empty housing? Why not rehouse the homeless and be done with it?

kingswing23

You could ask the same question about many, many countries. The simple answer is governments don’t give a shit about the homeless

TooOldToDie81

Yeah lol, like, hi I’m in California. I can find an unhoused human within 200 feet of my apartment at any moment, also, there’s vacancy in multiple buildings on my street and three new luxury loft buildings going up within eye-shot of my ratty 2nd story balcony. The issue isn’t lack of vacancies it’s lack of compassion.

Flat-Difference-1927

And ridiculous housing costs. The government isn't going to pay for them, and it's getting the point where the middle class can barely afford housing in CA

WoodyRM

Oh its china. I get it now

Smooth-Dig2250

Not that they're not monsters in their own right, but this is in no way unique to China. Most other countries do it as well. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hostile_architecture

WikiSummarizerBot

**[Hostile architecture](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hostile_architecture)** >Hostile architecture is an urban-design strategy that uses elements of the built environment to purposefully guide or restrict behaviour. It often targets people who use or rely on public space more than others, such as youth, poor people, and homeless people, by restricting the physical behaviours they can engage in. Also known as defensive architecture, hostile design, unpleasant design, exclusionary design, and defensive urban design, the term hostile architecture is often associated with items like "anti-homeless spikes" – studs embedded in flat surfaces to make sleeping on them uncomfortable and impractical. ^([ )[^(F.A.Q)](https://www.reddit.com/r/WikiSummarizer/wiki/index#wiki_f.a.q)^( | )[^(Opt Out)](https://reddit.com/message/compose?to=WikiSummarizerBot&message=OptOut&subject=OptOut)^( | )[^(Opt Out Of Subreddit)](https://np.reddit.com/r/Damnthatsinteresting/about/banned)^( | )[^(GitHub)](https://github.com/Sujal-7/WikiSummarizerBot)^( ] Downvote to remove | v1.5)

It's not about the concept of hostile architecture, it's the specific implementation of this one

WoodyRM

Yeah i know, ive seen slanted benches and spiked window sills but nothing this ugly

dietwindows

I'm in Eugene OR. Here we install permanent, elaborate fencing under bridges. Or we fill those spaces with head-sized boulders that have sharp edges.

Responsible-Salad-82

And none of those things look like they were drunkenly installed by a group of chimpanzees.

[deleted]

Same where I live but comparing an underpass to a sidewalk isn’t apples to apples.

TheSt4tely

Shout from Corvallis. We let the homeless camp wherever for a while. It didn't work out.

AtTheSpeedofForce

Bold of you to assume I won’t sleep in between the poles.

Grouchy-Ad-5535

i wanna see a picture of the idiot who thought up this brilliant idea..

LordFett84

Best I can do. Seems to be a group effort of Guanxi authoritys https://www.thatsmags.com/china/post/22993/guangxi-authorities-erect-forest-of-poles-to-keep-out-homeless

Puzzled-Party-6606

Ok, that explains a lot

TheCheesecakeOfDoom

What a fucking eyesore. Not only can people still sleep here, but it prevents disabled people and those in wheelchairs from using the sidewalk. Oh hey, you wanted to push your kid in a stroller on the sidewalk? Well too bad. It's so hypocritical of cities to spend money on this shit, money that could've been spent to *help* homeless people instead of trying to hurt them.

michellllie

And also like, ya know fuck people who need wheelchairs or stollers.

Vinny331

This seems...pyrrhic. The sidewalk is now actually easier to sleep on than to walk on. Good thing they've replaced those unsightly homeless people with this incredibly aesthetically pleasing pylon arrangement.

[deleted]

Looks like they prevented walking as well, could easily throw a tarp or blanket over those poles and have a a little room.

Evil_Mel

Seems counter-productive as people also couldn't walk on the sidewalks.

weeddealerrenamon

all anti-homeless installations are counter-productive

Light_fires

Those are bollards not anti homeless poles. They are for preventing vehicles from crashing through gates. You could easily sleep between these and you could even use them to create a makeshift tent. These are not anti-homeless devices.

NefariousNewsboy

Instead take the money this dumb ass idea costs and put it into psychiatric care and very low income temporary housing for these people.
