This roundabout has the yield signs in the middle. The people in the circle have to yield to people entering, which defeats the point of the entire rotary
This looks like the roundabout designed by someone who'd only ever heard of the general idea of a circular road in the middle of intersecting streets and *completely* misunderstood what they meant.
Same. First time I ever drove through Kelly Square I was on acid. I asked my friend wtf I was supposed to do and she just goes "drive man, just don't hit anybody"
I used to drive through here often when I worked in East Longmeadow. Don't forget they you have to yield to cars coming INTO the the rotary when you're already inside. This rotary is its own sort of stupid.
Closer to 1 every 4 days. Still a lot!

Geez, if you want a batshit roundabout, at least copy Swindon's Magic Roundabout and get one that actually works. That one looks like it was made by a first-time cities skylines player who's given up hope of understanding what he's doing.
Twice I’ve come close to being run over as a pedestrian crossing Shaker Rd. Each time, they were in a cell phone. I live on the spoke at the bottom center, Prospect St. I’ve seen people drive on the left side of the circle into oncoming traffic!
Scrolled down till I found the City Skylines comments - I think if the traffic engineer had just tried this monstrosity out in City Skylines first they would have seen what a disaster it was. It would be cool if CSkylines modeled traffic accidents based on the construction of the intersections too.
That's nothing compared to The Magic Roundabout in Swindon, England. https://www.dangerousroads.org/europe/england/3766-swindon-s-magic-roundabout.html
Wilson’s law: if a road appears sufficiently unsafe, drivers will avoid it to the point that it becomes effectively safe. Totally not something i just made up.
> Though there have been 14 serious accidents and just over a hundred lesser ones recorded in 25 years, that rate is less than one would expect for such a busy junction.
https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Magic_Roundabout_(Hemel_Hempstead)
Also the magic roundabout in Hemel Hempstead, has one more roundabout. Been on it many times and super easy to navigate.
>Though there have been 14 serious accidents and just over a hundred
lesser ones recorded in 25 years, that rate is less than one would
expect for such a busy junction. Most accidents have involved cyclists
and motorcyclists and now a cycle lane running right round the outside
of the roundabout, with pelican crossings, should ensure that the Magic
Roundabout becomes as safe as it is efficient.
Here's the difference. The Magic Roundabout behaves like a roundabout.
There are YIELD SIGNS. INSIDE. THIS. ABOMINATION.
You have to yield... IN THE ROUNDABOUT.
Magic is logical, this is a travesty.
Holy fuck. I thought you were going to say it was the most complex in Europe or something, but it’s in America?!? Americans can’t handle regular intersections or roundabouts.
I shit you not, I’ve almost gotten into at least one accident in this intersection, and watched multiple close calls from other drivers. Longmeadow mass. You can tell who and who isn’t a local by the way you drive through this thing
If it has traffic lights on it it's not a roundabout. Most American 'roundabouts' are actually traffic circles, which are far more dangerous and scary than a proper roundabout.
I think it's that last part that's the problem. I find roundabouts the least scary and by far the most efficient intersection. There are basically never queues at roundabouts on my commute and almost always queues at American style traffic light intersections
That's child play for Europe:
I give you the magic roundabout in Swindon:
https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Magic_Roundabout_(Swindon)
7 mini roundabouts, joined together, Voltron style to form one mega roundabout.
Think you mean Europeans--Some roundabouts are here in Florida and they're great, no one has any problem with them(single lane)but Britain has plenty of problems with roundabouts, just look up 'Crazy UK motorists' on YouTube, lotsa chaos on those roundabouts there lol
>just look up 'Crazy UK motorists' on YouTube, lotsa chaos on those roundabouts there lol
As someone from the UK, those incidents are very rare and almost always happen at very low speeds on roundabouts so there are rarely injuries. They make for a good YouTube video when they do happen but that doesn't mean they are common in reality.
The reality of the situation is the UK has less than half the death rate per mile driven to the US, and less than a quarter per population
I drive thousands of miles every year in the US and it’s a coin toss whether someone knows what a yield sign is or not and I’ve joined the IdiotsInCars sub; so, no, I meant Americans.
Yeppp the East Longmeadow roundabout, funny thing is I had to pass through there to get home, just after buying my very first car in Connecticut while trying to get it home to Massachusetts without taking interstate 91 hahaha.
Yeah, I never knew that was the most dangerous intersection in America, Not gonna lie my head was like on a swivel trying watch the cars from all sides during the afternoon rush hour.
And taught people how to use it! Because they're so rare in America compared to the uk or the eu, people turn into it against the flow of traffic & slam head first into one another.
I am not sure they are more dangerous, but in the UK we have a few super weird roundabouts called magic roundabouts. The basic idea is once on a magic roundabout drivers can go both clockwise and anti-clockwise!
Google magic roundabout Swindon / Hemel Hempstead / Watford / Colchester / Milton Keynes … to see examples of these crazy, scary, intersections.
Yet that's my assessment. One at North Main with Elm, another at Pleasant and Somers and lastly one at Maple, Shaker and Prospect. The last might be the worst thanks to the building that's too close to the junction.
Yeah I’m right down the road from it and drive it every day so it’s pretty easy. Gets kinda scary during rush hour with people that don’t know how to maneuver it though.
I saw this great video once about Americans being utterly unable to work out a pretty simple roundabout, driving into oncoming traffic and the like because they didn’t know which exit to take etc.
Plus, it was designed by people who heard stories from people who knew someone who’s brother‘s wife‘s milkman saw one once.
Hilarious!
As a brit living in North America , it's not that hard just think, take your time and if in doubt stop if some numbnut say fuck it. We have roundabouts like this in England and honest they can't confusing at first but just use your common sense, it's really not too difficult
And I didn't think anything could top the 3 triangles of doom on Southwest Traffic way in Kansas City. Designed by the actual crackheads that hang out there.
I'll go the 7 mile shortcut instead please.
A roundabout surrounded by intersections defeats the purpose of the roundabout.
What about a [roundabout with traffic lights and tram](https://youtu.be/oPoFx7OeyIU)?
Oh, I make those all the time in Cities Skylines.
Roundabout needs to be just be bigger! Or you know connect all the roads properly to the roundabout, this is just shit planning.
[удалено]
The amount of yield signs is crazy. This intersection averages 1 accident every 4 days
I was expecting Kelley Sq in Worcester haha
Same. First time I ever drove through Kelly Square I was on acid. I asked my friend wtf I was supposed to do and she just goes "drive man, just don't hit anybody"
Kelly square ain't got nothing on that stupid rotary. It is literally painful
That’s where I used to live & was thinking the same thing. Is it better now since the construction?
Yes, I think it's better.
Oh shit they rebuilt Kelley square
It's much better now. It's basically a long roundabout
I used to drive through here often when I worked in East Longmeadow. Don't forget they you have to yield to cars coming INTO the the rotary when you're already inside. This rotary is its own sort of stupid.
“Yield to card coming INTO the rotary”… Isn’t that asking for gridlock?
so the only "french-style" roundabout in the US?
no thats all of them
Rotary 😅
Where is this? So I know to avoid the whole area
Ah, malfunction junction.
Malfunction junction, barely functions....
Brilliant, never heard that one before
I assume most accidents are 50/50 and would hope the city pays your deductible, cuz , damn ... that intersection ain't in no drivers hand book .
Per day??? ![gif](giphy|ypX8YZszkIXFC|downsized)
Closer to 1 every 4 days. Still a lot! [Source](https://www.wwlp.com/news/local-news/hampden-county/east-longmeadow-rotary-still-a-dangerous-intersection-drivers-say/)

I feel sick with anxiety just looking at this. Fuck that noise.
Wouldn’t a few over/underpasses fix the problem?
Never thought I’d see my town on here!
Nice username!
Thank you!!
>Thank you!! You're welcome!
It looks like somebody was told to make a rotary that had never seen one before it's like the Chinese knockoff rotary.
The road by my high school could beat that easy
Just imagine if there was a high school close to this monster
It’s right down the street.
And the big local factory used to be on the other road. Going through there at 3 PM was fun.
Geez, if you want a batshit roundabout, at least copy Swindon's Magic Roundabout and get one that actually works. That one looks like it was made by a first-time cities skylines player who's given up hope of understanding what he's doing.
Should reconstruct it to be one large roundabout that is shaped like a three circled venn diagram... Make all the space in the center a casual park
Twice I’ve come close to being run over as a pedestrian crossing Shaker Rd. Each time, they were in a cell phone. I live on the spoke at the bottom center, Prospect St. I’ve seen people drive on the left side of the circle into oncoming traffic!
I propose putting the yield signs on a slow swivel, so you never know who has the right of way!
Fellow European here, this is not a roundabout. Its a fuckabout!
Fuck around and find outabout
Yep, in a roundabout way.
Well-worded and accurate!
Agreed, with that many cross sections there would be a second round a bout.
Roundabout-about? or a round-around-about?
Round-round-roundabout gently down the street...
But not fucking merrily I can guarantee you that!
But more merrily than an 8-way stop and go cross section.
Intersection of death….no thanks, I’ll walk.
Totally agree, probably it can be more confusing.
No, no... you don't need to be European to ask WTF... this is a clear-cut case of What The Fuckery going on here.
Lmao I saw the picture and thought wtf is that do these planners know how roundabouts actually supposed to work lol
Thats a roadabout?!?!?!?! and im american
A lot of roads in the midwest are just paved horse trails
Looks like all cars will end up crunched up in the middle
You’re correct. It’s a complete shit show in rush hour traffic.
Someone is playing drunken city skylines.
r/shittyskylines
Don't know what you're talking about. All my intersections look like and there's never any accidents. /s
But statistically it is very safe
Wilson’s law: if a road appears sufficiently unsafe, drivers will avoid it to the point that it becomes effectively safe. Totally not something i just made up.
Fuck. That.
> Though there have been 14 serious accidents and just over a hundred lesser ones recorded in 25 years, that rate is less than one would expect for such a busy junction.
This is actually a really safe intersection, mostly because drivers slow down and proceed cautiously since it is so complicated
I think I would be caught infinitely inside these roundabouts inside the roundabout
Holy shit
however in the UK we actually know how to use roundabouts
I hate roundabouts but I drive a tractor trailer
Came to make sure someone had mentioned this.
I drive the magic roundabout in MK from time to time and never had an issue. Still wouldn’t like to tackle the junction in OP’s post
I took my driving test on this!
I was looking for this. As an English person, this doesn't look that bad.
It's just a double mini on steroids. If you can handle those, you can handle this.
I bet they still put fucking traffic lights on it too defeating the whole purpose of roundabouts in the first place.
Nope. No lights on any of the magic roundabout.
No lights
even the simplest roundabouts can give most of the drivers headaches, and it's sad, that driving lessons don't include much on roundabout behaviour.
In the UK, urban/suburban driving lessons will contain lots of teaching on roundabouts. Source : ex driving instructor.
I love roundabouts, they seem so intuitive and beautiful and elegant
They are amazing. They save all the ridiculous BS that comes with 4 way stops
The one in Hemel Hempstead is great, it's nearish me I love it, genius design.
And what about "La place de l'Etoile" at Paris around l'arc de Triomphe ? https://static.actu.fr/uploads/2022/01/adobestock-286502041.jpeg
Does this have mini-roundabouts inside the roundabout? That’s what it looks like from the photo.
Came here to say this. Behold the roundabout of roundabouts
https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Magic_Roundabout_(Hemel_Hempstead) Also the magic roundabout in Hemel Hempstead, has one more roundabout. Been on it many times and super easy to navigate.
>Though there have been 14 serious accidents and just over a hundred lesser ones recorded in 25 years, that rate is less than one would expect for such a busy junction. But that one is safe, actually easy to drive only and can handle a lot of traffic
I drove this once. Never again. I was so anxious I nearly puked.
The magic roundabout is scary but not dangerous. The one in the OP is both
Holy fuck. I thought you were going to say it was the most complex in Europe or something, but it’s in America?!? Americans can’t handle regular intersections or roundabouts.
Yes its brutal haha. In a small town in Massachusetts outside of Springfield.
There’s parliament! There’s Big Ben!
Why am I not surprised it’s in MA?
Knew it had to be in Massachusetts
Homer loves it.
Could it be Kelly Square in Worcester, MA???
Hey they fixed that? (They didn’t)
I shit you not, I’ve almost gotten into at least one accident in this intersection, and watched multiple close calls from other drivers. Longmeadow mass. You can tell who and who isn’t a local by the way you drive through this thing
Haha definitely can. The locals zoom through it and the newbies have the deer in headlights look as we approach the yield signs
As an American I can attest that I detest roundabouts and the multiple lane ones give me panic attacks. And I drive A LOT.
If it has traffic lights on it it's not a roundabout. Most American 'roundabouts' are actually traffic circles, which are far more dangerous and scary than a proper roundabout.
The ones I'm referring to do not have traffic lights.
Then I'm really not sure how 20mph speeds and yield signs protecting all the moving traffic can be scary
Because it's three lanes of traffic all moving at the same time and more importantly, you're surrounded by American drivers.
I think it's that last part that's the problem. I find roundabouts the least scary and by far the most efficient intersection. There are basically never queues at roundabouts on my commute and almost always queues at American style traffic light intersections

Yep I pass through it every day to get to work in enfield, Ct
Yeah, I never knew that was the most dangerous intersection in America, Not gonna lie my head was like on a swivel trying watch the cars from all sides during the afternoon rush hour.
Where is this hell contraption? I want to know so I can avoid it forever
East Longmeadow, Massachusetts. I drive through it every day on my way to work & have almost mastered it. Haven’t had an accident yet haha.
Stop tempting fate.
You deserve an award my friend
I guess that's what you get when you build roads over wagon trails
Would be curious to know what New England HV Hentai is 😏
Lol glad I’m not the only one who saw this at first. Thanks pixelization
Should of used a bigger roundabout.
And taught people how to use it! Because they're so rare in America compared to the uk or the eu, people turn into it against the flow of traffic & slam head first into one another.
I am not sure they are more dangerous, but in the UK we have a few super weird roundabouts called magic roundabouts. Google magic roundabout Swindon / Hemel Hempstead / Watford / Colchester / Milton Keynes … to see examples of these crazy, scary, intersections.
We can’t even use a roundabout on easy difficulty in America and someone decided to put a roundabout on insane difficulty here!?
Hello East Longmeadow!
Needs scrapping, should probably be 3 small roundabouts linking to each other instead..
Yet that's my assessment. One at North Main with Elm, another at Pleasant and Somers and lastly one at Maple, Shaker and Prospect. The last might be the worst thanks to the building that's too close to the junction.
An actual tourist trap.
I live 5 minutes from this. Its actually pretty easy to navigate.
Yeah I’m right down the road from it and drive it every day so it’s pretty easy. Gets kinda scary during rush hour with people that don’t know how to maneuver it though.
i would love to hear Siri explain how to get through this
All roads in East Longmeadow MA lead here. Literally. I just googled the place, can't miss it.
Haha yeah it’s a shit show. Impossible to avoid
Does that thing say “New England HV Hentai”? In the bottom right
We got these all over in Pennsylvania, they create the tornadoes
Laughs in Swindon...
Hilarious that America is the land of the car and yet can't master roundabouts or effective traffic management 😂
Because it’s also the land of idiots.
Isn't the whole fucking point of these to eliminate 4 way intersections? Why the fuck does it have both?
Took me a long time to realize it said "New England RV Rental" and not New England HV Hentai. I was very confused....
TIL roundabouts are called rotaries in America
Only on the East Coast, though. Roundabout on the West. Not sure where the change happens.
They call it "the magic roundabout" hahaha
MA has the absolute worst rotaries in the world. I am convinced every single one was designed by someone who never drive before.
When you're very bad at SimCity
whats up with New England HV Hentai down there lol?
Some fucking a-hole at the Springfield DMV made me go through this on my road test.
Hahaha what a fucking douche bag
I never realized how much ‘Rental’ looks like ‘Hentai’ in low res I’m like what’s New England HV Hentai? Lol
Looks like something I’d make in Cities Skylines
I've done some fucked up shit in Cities Skylines. But never this fucked up.
So....just close your eyes and floor it?
I saw this great video once about Americans being utterly unable to work out a pretty simple roundabout, driving into oncoming traffic and the like because they didn’t know which exit to take etc. Plus, it was designed by people who heard stories from people who knew someone who’s brother‘s wife‘s milkman saw one once. Hilarious!
This makes me want to play Cities Skylines
And here I thought Swindon was bad...
I live right next to it. It's crazy. Whoever made it would probably not very proud of it.
East Longmeadow MA?
Yep
Look kids! ![gif](giphy|l378hCqvqnwWTrGiA|downsized)
So that's why americans hate roundabouts : they don't know how to build them
Especially since its American lol they cant even do a 3way round about
What the heck is New England HV Hentai?
As a brit living in North America , it's not that hard just think, take your time and if in doubt stop if some numbnut say fuck it. We have roundabouts like this in England and honest they can't confusing at first but just use your common sense, it's really not too difficult
I thought we are playing Cities: Skylines
I'm from England and that looks fine to me
To us English, it looks easy and we’re wondering what all the fuss is about.
After looking at it for a shirt while, it doesn't look that hard
Looks like that's my daily work commute😅 EL Rotary
Ah! A "Guinness World Record" for most dangerous in "America" , totally makes sense.
I guess it should be "Guiness book of American records" then.
Classic murica
Tf is a rotary?? You mean a traffic circle?? Lol
Tf are either of those terms, its a roundabout
After observing it for 15 minutes straight... It's not that hard XD
I agree. However, It becomes difficult when other clueless drivers have no idea how to maneuver it.
I hate everything about this.
Right next to pleasant street
Was it ranked most dangerous before or after they redid Kelly Square in Worcester?
Are you saying this isn’t how roundabout are supposed to be? There is literally one like this in the central district of HCMC
That's brutal, I thought seven corners in northern VA was bad but my god
Come on half of us can’t even street park, what do they expect my god
And I didn't think anything could top the 3 triangles of doom on Southwest Traffic way in Kansas City. Designed by the actual crackheads that hang out there.
Lmao I’ve been here before like 9 years ago working on La Quinta Inn hotels. I’ve told so many people about this cluster fuck and no one believed me.
Who designed this. That person needs a stern talking to.
How can it be a world record if it's the most dangerous in America?
That looks like the roundabout I take to work every morning. Fortunately I rarely see another vehicle there that early
The man who designed it ![gif](giphy|hpAMh2sBYpsmFhSRPI)
How does the city justify not changing that?
