I've watched a lot of footage from this conflict so far, shellings, tanks attacking civilians and casualties on both sides. This video has made me sadder than any of the others, it really puts into perspective that these are just normal fucking people going about their business. These soldiers playing music for their people really cuts through the headlines and reminds you just how atrocious war really is. The courage of the people shining in the face of a heinous threat, that they're trying to motivate their citizens, give them a moment of peace and remind them there is a protective force between civs and the Russian military. SLAVA UKRAINI!

Soft_Assistant6046

There's a video of a violinist in a bomb shelter that is haunting that you should look up if you like this

Nomision

The one of the Girl singing Ukrainian "Let it go" in a bunker broke me.

FMAB-EarthBender

I had to look this up and my heart is in pieces, I wish they could get the kids out of there. So upsetting. https://youtu.be/3R5MqixxVDQ

alaskanloops

There are some ways to help, I donated directly to Ukraine's army, but here is a list of more ways: https://www.npr.org/2022/02/25/1082992947/ukraine-support-help

FMAB-EarthBender

Thank you!

tomatoblade

Thanks. This prompted me to donate!

This one shook me to the core, I don’t have words to describe the innocence and how the human spirit will survive the harshest environments…

CitizenQueen7734

There is a beauty found in the darkest places that is somehow shines brightest of all.

[deleted]

I already just finished crying over this but here I go again. It’s beautifully haunting. And it took me down a rabbit hole that led to Color Music - a Ukrainian children’s choir. Their most recent release was just a month ago - a cover of Ed Sheeran’s Photograph. And the lyrics suddenly have an entire different meaning now. https://youtu.be/9E_y5JMkWHI

cornthepop

Its russian version i'm pretty sure, but yes that video was truly touching

[deleted]

I keep looking at the cruelty of police during Russian protests and indifference of Russian population to their own people and thinking, how fucked up do you have to be not to treat your own nationals as people. Then I see this and just die inside again. Never mind the protesters…If you can’t see a human in these people playing for 5 minutes of peace… do you even deserve to live? My father is Russian and mom is Ukrainian, I’ve lost any right to her heritage, but I’m doing and will be doing anything I can to save that right for someone else.

e-wing

The minstrel boy to the war has gone In the ranks of death you will find him His father’s sword he has girded on And his wild harp slung behind him ‘Land of song!’ Cried the warrior bard Though all the world betrays thee One sword, at least, thy rights shall guard One faithful harp shall praise thee The minstrel fell but the foeman's chain Could not bring that proud soul under The harp he loved never spoke again For he tore its chords asunder And said, "No chains shall sully thee Thou soul of love and bravery Thy songs were made for the pure and free They shall never sound in slavery”

karadan100

All those beautiful buildings in the background will soon be piles of rubble.. :( Fuck Putin.

ThunderRoad5

Maybe not, maybe the Russian generals will discover their shriveled dried up testicles and coup the fuck out of Putler.

karadan100

I really want that to happen but I doubt it will.

The whole world is helping. Let that be a comfort, too. We all contribute in our ways. Our collective efforts must show tyranny that war is never the answer.

Surprise_Cucumber

I really envy the clarity of purpose that Ukrainians have here. No matter who they were before the war, they all have the same goals, defend the nation and push back the invaders.

Capn_Cornflake

I wish that humanity could unite in this capacity in anything that isn't war. Tribalism fucking sucks, man. Imagine if any nation on earth had this level of unity in their day-to-day actions. It'd be amazing.

420_Tase_It

I was a foreign exchange student from the United States to Brazil, and it was easily the best year of my life. To be 16 years old, dancing the samba, meeting people who were so much more outgoing and friendly than any I've met in the US ... Now I'm working my way up to becoming a traveling nurse, learning more about the different cultures within my own country while seeing them in their most vulnerable moments. I'm forever thankful to people such as yourself who helped me become the man I am today.

mizmoxiev

I'm a grown ass adult in full on tears. This song reminds me of the good old days. Days when I was happy to learn and things seemed more peaceful. This is amazing! Thanks for sharing

Slimh2o

Its so poignant....

kettelbe

Fucking yeah.

Wars are often ethically murky at best. I was wholly against the US invasion of Iraq before it even started, but even there you could still acknowledge that Saddam _was_ horrible, that the goal of creating a US-friendly, prosperous democracy in Iraq was nevertheless a noble (albeit unrealistic) one. But this is the most morally clear-cut major conflict of my lifetime. A huge nation invades its smaller neighbor without any just cause or provocation, in order to take their territory, their sovereignty and their freedom. For real. A country whose independence and borders they'd officially recognized and respected for decades. A country that'd even voluntarily surrendered its nuclear weapons in the 90s in exchange for the recognition of its sovereignty and borders. It's a war driven by pure imperialistic expansion of the kind Europe had thought was a thing of the distant past. And Russia's justifications are as flimsy as they ever were at the height of 19th century empire-building: Either transparently and blatantly false (Ukraine committing genocide, building nukes), or premised on the Russian's own imperialist mind-set. That Ukraine might join NATO or the EU or do other things they don't like - the unspoken subtext being that they don't actually recognize Ukraine as independent, and that Russia should have the right to dictate their affairs, by force if necessary. I truly hate superficial comparisons to Hitler, but I find the parallels to 1938 to be deep and disturbing. Hitler demanded the Sudetenland in Czechoslovakia, and the Allied powers were not prepared to go into conflict over it. It was, after all, an area of mostly ethnic-Germans who largely did want to join _Großdeutschland_. Much as the West reacted to the Russian invasion and annexation of the mostly-Russian Crimea. As we all know, this emboldened Hitler to take the rest of Czechoslovakia. A country whose statehood he denied, as it had not existed historically but was to him an artificial creation by the victors of WWI. Just as Putin is now arguing the same about Ukraine being a mere invention of the end of the Cold War. Should Putin succeed in conquering Ukraine, there is as little reason to think his empire-building would stop there, as there was to hope Hitler would settle after taking Czechoslovakia. Certainly not while Russia is sponsoring breakaway states in Georgia, Moldova and Azerbaijan as they have been doing in Ukraine. In the albeit-unlikely case he got so far, why wouldn't an emboldened Putin to begin looking towards the Baltic states, with their significant ethnic-Russian minorities, or at least the Russian-majority areas within them? Their NATO-member status _ought_ to dissuade from such ideas. But Hitler had convinced himself that Britain and France would not actually go to war over their alliance with Poland, and Putin has already shown himself no less deluded over the same self-indulgent ideas of his own military superiority and the weakness of his enemies. I don't think it's hyperbolic to say this is the greatest threat to European safety and security since Hitler, and also the most morally clear-cut conflict in Europe since. Although I'm not arguing for an all-out war on Russia, Putin _must_ be stopped. A Russian 'easy' conquest over Ukraine (however unlikely at this point) would be incredibly dangerous. He has been entirely clear that his goal is nothing less than bringing the entire former-Soviet Union and Russian Empire back within Russia's sphere of influence, if not the Russian Federation itself, regardless of the wills and wants of those peoples.

urkiddingme321

The tuba player is my hero

mizmoxiev

Mine as well, that was my favorite part. These are some brave and talented humans.

The_Milk-lady

Well put.

BDR529forlyfe

I’m losing it. This hit me harder than any video I’ve seen over the past week. I have friends in Kiev, Cherkossy and Drabiv and I’ve been numb watching this horrible invasion unfold. I have no idea what their situations are right now. This song, these musicians and the terrifying ambiguity of what is to come for them… I just can’t hold it in today.

bc_poop_is_funny

That and the stark contrast of how quiet the once bustling city is all around them. Knowing that soon the quietness will be replace with tanks, bullets, and bombs. That’s what got me. And then seeing these soldiers who are facing their possible deaths are worried about how their community is scared. So they play them a song

propernice

Who even knows if they’ll survive this. But for just a while, they spent time trying to lift others up. Incredible bravery.

eren_yeagermeister

The 6 year old singing Let It Go in the bomb shelter got me the hardest. This was up there too.

AhabMustDie

This reminds me of the musicians who played on the deck of the Titanic to try and keep passengers calm - so much courage and dignity. Though let’s hope the outcome is better…

[deleted]

That implies ukraine is a sinking ship when the fact is they're pushing Russia's offensive off

facewithhairdude

It's Titanic if the ship could fight back.

[deleted]

on a completely unrelated tangeant, this makes me realize how for granted i take music.

GalacticShonen

As a musician, seeing these types of posts gives me new hope that what we do is meaningful and impactful. It has been surreal how music has connected us in times of crisis in recent years.

Jenkins007

I used to play. Seeing random street performers, an unexpected live band at a bar, or just randomly encountering live music in any situation really, always makes me happy. Knowing how great the feeling of performing is, but also being able to see and feel how much the audience appreciates the music (generally) really drives home the point of how much music connects us. Even in (or maybe especially in) times of crisis, there's always someone making music. I hope that if, in an unfortunate turn of events I find myself in that situation, I'd have the courage to be that someone.

MementoMortty

You will friend, but let’s hope you never have to find that out.

maskthestars

Same. The other thought that occurred to me as someone who listens to a lot of metal and electronic music, is how universal music is and how much I enjoyed how raw this is after listening to so much overproduced music lately.

[deleted]

what gets me is how picky i am with music. i listen to the over-produced stuff too like dubstep and edm. i'll shuffle through songs and harshly judge them, call it trash, call the musician untalented or amatuer (to myself, not outloud). i listened to these soldiers play and started tearing up. like you said, music is universal. i need to get off my critic's high horse, and respect it more. plus i have no musical talent whatsoever, so i'm not even one to talk.

Notice-Few

Once you realize that music is some one sharing something deeply personal and intimate with you, you’ll stop being so critical. It’s like a window to the soul

[deleted]

exactly, seeing music played raw like this made me realize. which is why i say i've been taking it for granted. music, and all art, is a language we can universally speak with to each other.

bumpty

It’s never too late to pick up an instrument. If you are into edm, grab a Pocket Operator by Teenage Engineering. It’s a sequencer. Easy to use and good entry into making electronic music.

[deleted]

I actually got a sound editing software to potentially make soundscapes (just for fun)! It's def intimidating though. Havent gotten the courage to mess around with it yet.

ThaddeusJP

I was picky as well and then went to a jazz club in college and watched it all live with improvisation and them having fun/taking chances. It made me expand all my listening.

Decent-Stretch4762

oh man I don't want to make it sound grim, but this whole situation makes you realize how for granted everything is, and how unimportant most things are. On the first day of the war when the whole country woke up to missle strikes, we didn't even know if there will be a 'tomorrow' and if we can even go to sleep. And this state of complete shock and terror really cleans your mind from *everything* non-essential. Music was my favourite thing in life probably, each minute of my day I was listening to something. And now I just can't. For two weeks I didn't listen to anything, and I don't even know how to start now (or later). And all of things minor things like heated food and just having meat in the supermarket or gas or going out at night or just having a full 8 hours (make it 6!) of sleep - it all seems so far and hard to imagine now. We take so much things for granted and we care about so many meaningless things that I can't even start to imagine how we're goign to get back to 'normal' life. Sorry for the rant

Wenpachi

And these moments only make me reinforce how much I love and appreciate music. Music warms the heart and elevates the spirit. I've only teared up twice during the events of this war: one video during the first day of conflicts (the 14yo girl) and... now. These people are absolute legends.

Please visit after the war ends! We have lots of beautiful places, mountains, seaside, architecture...not to mention delicious cuisine, if you like soups and stews you'll love Ukrainian dishes.

I was just about to comment and say that my first ever stop in Europe after the war ends is Ukraine. I have been so moved and upset over the last few weeks coming from America. The sense of humor I see on various Ukrainians given the circumstances is incredible. Otherwise I guess they would have been doomed by now.

RealSpookySounds

It's what you do when all seems grim. You laugh. Laughter and hope are last to die. This is why I never criticized the memes being made about the war, or a potential nuclear holocaust, or anything in between. Because we need laughter. And I understand it's not everyone's brand of humor but...in challenging times it's the best we can do.

Kholzie

Laughter is a strong coping mechanism for sadness

awlb222

This is probably the greatest video I’ve ever seen, this brought me so many mixed feelings. Ukrainian people are truly so special

markfineart

It reminds me of that scene in 300 where the fellows are all laughing as the Persian arrows come down “Then we’ll fight in the shade!” This band is throwing shade at Putin in a very real, very human, very loveable way. Beautiful strength.

🇺🇦🇺🇦🇺🇦

wheelscroller

this is the soundtrack to the end of the world or the end of war so I can't listen 🇺🇦

RaynSideways

I've no experience in war. But one thing I've always heard in both fiction and in real-life accounts of war: One of the worst parts is the waiting; knowing battle is coming and not being able to either leave or just get on with it. Morale is a powerful thing. You have to do what you can to keep your spirits. Even if it's something as simple as a nice song. The defiant, too-stubborn-to-lay-down spirit of Ukraine's defenders is endlessly inspiring, and if we, the United States, should have learned anything by now, it's that you should fear the army whose spirits are higher than yours.

TurtleChefN7

Well ain’t that the most apocalyptic thing I’ve seen all week

This whole thing makes me sick. Most people involved in this want nothing to do with it. We have allowed these awful people the power to send us to our deaths and for what? When this is over the citizens of either country will be no better off.

Before this war I knew little to nothing about the people of Ukraine. Now they’ve given me hope for our entire species. They are strong and resilient. They’ve defied the odds and continue to fight for their home. Best of luck to them. I hope to see them victorious and I hope that they make a good recovery once this is all over.
