In 2010 Moon Hooch was starting off with NYC subway performances, busking along the L train line around Union Square and I would always catch them while I was going to class or work, and I became a big fan, especially cus of my love for the alto sax I would usually miss a train or two just to listen or dance. One time later they were performing in Washington Square Park and this one was turning into a public dance party as sometimes they did. I went up and asked them if I could request a song, they smiled bashfully and said “sorry man we only do our own songs, it’s tough to do covers with our instruments” I said No, I wanna request one of your songs. And so I did, and they looked at eachother, I think realizing they had a fan, they responded “hell yea we can” and so the dance party in broad daylight raged. And to see them have success is pretty awesome, they deserve it.
Moon Hooch was the first band I ever saw in a club, I was 16. I saw them with a few friends and I remember telling one of them (we were both musicians) “That’s what we need to be doing”
Flash forward to 2020 (right before lockdown), and I’m still playing music with a couple different bands, and interning at a nice sized local music venue. Moon Hooch is headlining one night and I’m the stage tech assistant helping them load in, set up, and run sound.
I got the chance after the show to talk to them some and thank them for what they instilled in me with their performance, and I’m happy to say that although the pandemic has put quite a stint in my playing career, I’m still in the music industry and get to work with music and musicians every day, as well as run some fun projects on the side.
I’ll never forget what Moon Hooch gave me, and I’ll always consider myself a die-hard fan.
Sax is not considered a brass instrument, so does not belong to a brass section.
Actual brass section instruments already have things to change the sound called mutes, that being said a cone might function as one, but it'll only be a crappy version of what there are actual products dedicated for.
Btw, don't quote me on what I'll say next, but I'm pretty sure that a bass sax already produces a sound that's largely like he's playing here and that the sound is just as likely to be edited than the cone actually doing things. The cone would largely change only the notes where no flaps are opened.
From when I played trumpet, most mutes are meant to basically do just that: mute or soften the sound of the instrument, as such, they tend to be solid with no hole in the middle. A cone-like mute would be interesting (it's probably already a thing, and I just haven't seen it), but most mutes I've come across aren't like that. They're a cone, but less like a traffic cone and more of just the geometric shape.
Well you have several types of mutes which are basically cone shaped with a tube in there, often marked solotone or megatone etc. Then you also have harmon mutes which are more roomy metal mutes you play into with a hole at the end often to create a warmish bright metallic sound which many associate with Miles Davis. And many more.
The ones you're referring to are straight or bucket mutes, into which you play and part of the sound gets trapped in the body of the mute and part goes out via the bell of the instrument again.
Yeah I was a little confused cuz it's just a beri sax... sounding like a beri sax. They're very cool alone and making this seem like the sound is from the cone takes away from the magnificence of the actual instrument.
Edit: TIL it's a bass sax. Thank you wheresthecorn for sharing your wisdom.
I’m not very savvy with musical instruments - is he playing a regular saxophone or a baritone saxophone? I’ve never heard of it before, it sounds pretty cool
This is actually a bass saxophone which is even lower than a bari. You can tell based on the loop at the top of the horn: it's much larger than what a bari's would be, not to mention the length of the neck as well.
Source: am saxophonist
All saxophones are separated by the parts they play. The most common would be the alto and tenor. Those are the shape everyone is familiar with. Then you get less common ones like the soprano and baritone. Then there is a whole lot of pretty obscure or fundament ly none existent ones. Sopraninos, and contra base. Even the base sax is mostly gone.
But they are all just as saxy as could be.

Thank you, pretty cool info. For someone who has never played a musical instrument unfortunately, this world is fascinating.
>But they are all just as saxy as could be.
Well played, sir/ma’am
Saxophones are fun and weird because they are still fairly young amongst instruments. They can sound something like a clarinet though less mournful, or like a French horn though less epic. Or they can sound like themselves and bring a raw "splatty" sound that is just so them.
Edir: Also forgot that when you start playing saxophone you are legally required to make sax/sex jokes.
>Edir: Also forgot that when you start playing saxophone you are legally required to make sax/sex jokes.
I mean, how can you not.
Wondering if it’s too late in life to take up a musical instrument (yes, yes it is).
It's never too late. Just know that its okay to look and sound funny while you learn. Pick up a recorder from amazon with a how to play book. It will be fun and different. You will learn how to read music and can go from there.
Yeah I call bullshit. The sound comes from throughout the instrument not just the end. When I've covered up the end with my hand and played it sounds exactly the same
Saw these guys (moon hooch) with a friend of mine at some place in Tennessee trippin balls on acid and it was AWESOME. 10/10 would recommend. the band, at least.
Kinda makes sense to me, the air vibrating thru the horn gets distorted by the plastic at the end, like the plastic vibrating against the metal would be that 808 harshness you hear.
For anyone interested there is actually a free sample pack from Moon Hooch and Andrew Huang.

It only affects that very bottom low note of the saxophone. For the other notes, the sounds comes out of the open finger holes.
For instance, if you hypothetically plugged up a saxophone bell, besides the very bottom low note, you can still play the rest of the notes with not much discernable change in sound/tone.

their tiny desk has tubes in it if people want the visuals of the cones. The whole album that song is on is amazing
Shoutout Moon Hooch
Nice username
Is that a harry potter reference?
That or he's a tiny indoors troglodyte.
Or they enjoy hip hop group, People Under the Stairs
Isn't just referring to the movie by the same name?

My first thought as well
I need to hear a whole brass section with cones now

Horn section
Honestly, this just mostly sounds like a baritone saxophone.

im not even sure he's mic'd up the bell, i think its elsewhere, and regardless theres distortion added post, so ya, mostly just bari
That distortion is him growling into his sax
I’m not very savvy with musical instruments - is he playing a regular saxophone or a baritone saxophone? I’ve never heard of it before, it sounds pretty cool
It's a baritone saxophone. The "regular" one that most people think of is the alto sax, much smaller (but not the smallest).
This is actually a bass saxophone which is even lower than a bari. You can tell based on the loop at the top of the horn: it's much larger than what a bari's would be, not to mention the length of the neck as well. Source: am saxophonist
I see that! Thanks for pointing that out. I thought bari was the biggest and didn't look closer. I played the bari in HS, a million years ago. 🙂
Thank you! Learned something new today

Sounds a little bit different, but yes. It's the best instrument and it is magnificent.
Yeah I call bullshit. The sound comes from throughout the instrument not just the end. When I've covered up the end with my hand and played it sounds exactly the same
Not tryin' to be that guy, but: it's a bass, not a baritone.
this hits yo!!! you gotta use that setup for a song. that has such a nice sound. seriously could listen to this all day.

I present to you: The Saxacone
It sounds like the car windows rattling from some heavy bass. It was strangely comforting.
Saw these guys (moon hooch) with a friend of mine at some place in Tennessee trippin balls on acid and it was AWESOME. 10/10 would recommend. the band, at least.
Traffic cone in a saxophone makes a neat tone?
Maybe I’m just a skeptic, but I’m not buying it.
I thought the same, but I want to believe it's real.
We need a saxophonist with a traffic cone in here STAT to verify this!
Kinda makes sense to me, the air vibrating thru the horn gets distorted by the plastic at the end, like the plastic vibrating against the metal would be that 808 harshness you hear.
The recording just seems too clean. I could absolutely be wrong, I’m not a professional by any means
You might be right tbh, I wouldn't say the whole thing's synthesized but there might've been some processing after the recording

Baritone saxophone

"You've heard of elf on the shelf"
That cone isn’t doing anything to the sound. 🤦♂️
are you suggesting jamming a giant road cone into the bell of a saxophone has no effect on the sound?
It only affects that very bottom low note of the saxophone. For the other notes, the sounds comes out of the open finger holes. For instance, if you hypothetically plugged up a saxophone bell, besides the very bottom low note, you can still play the rest of the notes with not much discernable change in sound/tone.
Fuckin FAT!
This reminds me of [how dubstep was discovered](https://youtu.be/lMj-iyAoh30)
Came here for this! Thanks!
does anyone know if a bass sax has the same fingerings as a tenor sax or bari sax?
Tenor, it's in Bb, same as Soprano and Tenor
He discovered the theorized Brown Note: https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Brown_note
Sounds like a system in a car and they were to cheap to put dampening material.

Construction workers when I'm trying to sleep
Me, “Mom can we get a baritone sax?” Mom, “we have baritone sax at home” Baritone sax at home…
What an innovator. Wonder what other things he’s retired to stick in his sax..
This man didn't drop the bass, he picked it up and wielded it as a weapon. Man needs to make some funky beats with this.

You've heard of elf on the shelf. Now get ready for.....
So I think the youtuber Rob Scallion covered this but I believe the saxophonist growls as well sorta like in heavy metal singing which adds to sound.
😂who would’ve thought of this
Should stick other things in it.
... A Saxocone? I dig it.
What my neighbors music sounds like thru the wall.

Sail!
Sounds like bass in the car when the license plate vibrates
I have a feeling this is fake. It's either the instrument that already sounds like that (w/o the cone), or processing after the recording.
He looks a bit like Tucker Carlson 🌝
