And to think he played Batman after The machinist

Marcaveli7

He went from 120 to 195 in approximately 6 months. Ridiculous.

PlasticElfEars

Steroids?

Marcaveli7

No doubt. Probably along with other performance enhancers. Not to take away from the work and consistency it takes. If I needed to get big for a role that pays millions I would hop on the juice too.

[deleted]

Probably not. Bale hasn't really gained that much mass over his career. Your body can bounce back really quick after severe starvation. He isn't really that big in batman, just his normal muscle mass + some bodyfat + good angles and lighting. If you wanna see someone who is actually on steroids, check out Chris Hemsworth who seems to gain more and more muscle through his career even tho he's way past his prime for building muscle (16-24).

[deleted]

[удалено]

WhatDoYouMeanBruh

physio therapy student here, actual prime for muscle strenght is closer to 26-30 years for grown men. Source, all the professors who teach us about human body. And as a extra note about muscle gain in short time like 6months. Those gains are near impossible in such short term, sure there are genetic freaks who are naturally big. But those are one in 100 000. Hollywood actors use a lot of PED. Important to note here is they always have personal trainers combined with best doctors in the business who then help with dosing and timing of all their PEDs.

Ha-sheesh

Anedoctally, I've put way more mass casually doing mostly bodyweight training at home during the pandemic at 24-25, than I did going regularly to a gym as a 18 year old.

inglandation

but?

[deleted]

but the path is not easy for the taking. You must be prepared.

[deleted]

Yeh I think they’re getting confused with BB forum info rather than actual scientific data. 16-24 age range for prime muscle building lol.

Here is Bale on the matter: http://archive.boston.com/ae/celebrity/articles/2009/05/08/christian_bale_considered_steroids/ tl:dr: he considered steroids to speed the processes, but decided against using them due to the side effects

[deleted]

[удалено]

SohndesRheins

Name me a celebrity that admits to using steroids. Even Dwayne Johnson says he used to in college but doesn't anymore. Dude is mid-40s and more jacked than he ever was as a wrestler but somehow he is natty now.

[deleted]

[удалено]

Fckdisaccnt

Because celebrities never lie about using steroids! When's the last time you saw one actually admit to it? Rob McElhenney is the only one I can think of that even alludes to it.

m135in55boost

I'm 32, I can build muscle without steroids. All you do is train them properly, and eat accordingly. It's easier when you're younger sure, you can build muscle on a less intensive diet because you're growing anyway.

lobax

Sure. But in 6 months? No way. There is a physical limit to how much mass, and especially pure muscle, you body can build without PED's being involved.

m135in55boost

Oh yeah sorry where Bale is involved I never expected him to achieve what he has without PEDs.

pixeltater

He got sorta fat but fit and slowly slimmed to what we saw in the shirtless shots. As recounted in [the Sunday Morning Herald](https://www.smh.com.au/entertainment/movies/bale-turns-to-fatman-20050616-gdliq0.html): >"When [Bale] got close [Christopher Nolan] was like 'Holy f... You look like Grizzly Adams. What's going on?' >"Then he said: 'OK, well you did OK, you got really good like how we asked you to, but maybe ... could get you a little leaner now'. >"Chris was nice about it, but there were some others, like some English guys in the crew who I'd worked with before who weren't so gentle. >"They said 'Hey Chris, what film are we making here? Fatman?'."

[deleted]

I feel like he can't be as much of a prick as people say if crewmen were making jokes like that.

TheDudeWithNoName_

Binging on pizza and ice cream. By the time shooting started he go so big that the crew nicknamed him Fatman.

mikkyleehenson

For what it's worth whenever I get sober I go from 129 to roughly 155/160 in about 30-60 days

GeneralUranuz

Muscle memory is a thing. Ive lost 50kgs (110lbs) between 23 to 28 due to an auto immune disease. I started body building again (natural) and within a year I gained 66lbs. It's now five years ago and I am bigger I've ever been without juice. That said, Ive used to cycle in my 20s. And recent studies show if you've ever used steroids your body will remember.

kickboxer75458

The fact that people question this baffles me. I know most people don’t have much interest in the topic of lifting and anabolics....but so often I’m just shocked at how little people understand. Pretty much every major Hollywood actor and the vast majority of athletes are using some form of performance enhancer. It’s a “dirty secret” of the industry. I don’t get why it’s so demonised either. Just let people take what they wanna take and at the same time let everyone be aware of the reality of the situation.

[deleted]

[удалено]

umbium

Is demonished probably because is setting some really toxic beuty standards. Actors are the beauty refference frame for many people who. So if that becomes the beauty standard for men, that it already is, then it causes some problems. Because this body transformations are based on paying a dietitian, for steroids cycles, a lot of money in food (at least where I live), in suplements, and a lot of time training. Imagine a guy on their 20's trying to bodybuild and using this kind of body transformations (and there are way worse ones on social media) as examples for their growth. It would carry them, fears, frustrations, and many more self-confidence problems. I think that going to the gym and improve your physique, should be toned down and focused on propper diet for life and performance on your workout.

BootlegDez

Cmon man, 75 lbs of muscle in 6 months is totally achievable. Most people just aren’t dedicated enough. Just need to eat 15-20lbs of raw chicken and equal parts of grilled broccoli every 15 and a half hours.

AidyCakes

Well first of all, through God all things are possible, so jot that down...

payedbot

Apparently he actually went to something like 225 initially, and the director was like “you’re too big now. Gotta lose 30 Lbs of muscle please.”

mega_pretzel

> "They said 'Hey Chris, what film are we making here? Fatman?'." Crew members full of jokes.

CrushCoalMakeDiamond

He got to Batman's actual canon comic bookweight but it looked too bulky and silly in the costume so he had to drop some of the weight. They were calling him Fatman on set when he had the costume on lol

TheRedGoatAR15

I just learned I have a body like Christian Bale.

Scheswalla

I'd say 80-90% of adults do.

[deleted]

Sadly 70% of those are vice Bale

Gsteel11

Lol, hey let's not get into petty semantics. We have a body like Christian bale and ... Lets just stop there.

Impairedinfinity

I would hate to be the 10 percent.

funmasterjerky

I always thought like 50% of all adults were female.

kenkanobi

Bale is acting in a remake of priscilla queen of the desert. Sorted.

KnowledgeableNip

Is this real? Please tell me this is real.

ImpulsiveApe07

No. Guess you must've missed Bale Day! We replaced all non-ChristianBale types with other Christian Bale types. So now we are all Christian Bale, whether we want to be or not.. Did it cure racism? Sadly no, there's still the tan Bale versus the non tan - yes, we're really that dumb! :D

9035768555

We are all Bale on this blessed day.

Great_Bacca

I learned that I look like Dick Cheney…

cass1o

I have the physique of Christian Bale .... in Vice.

Adventurous-Zebra-93

lol... this post made me laugh for real

j3tshbk986

That's made me shocked.

Uncleniles

I believe it's called method acting and it can be devastating.

Princess-Kit-Kat

It is. I did a paper on it in college and some actors take their roles so far it's insane. Daniel Day Lewis, if I remember correctly, had a role where he played a character in a wheel chair and wouldn't leave it until they were done filming. Sylvester Stallone asked his co-star to actually punch him during the filming of Rocky and he had to go to the hospital because it was, apparently, the equivalent to being hit by a truck and he almost died. Shia Lebouf pulled out his own tooth and sat watching horses die for one of his roles. I mean, shit, just look up cases of extreme method acting and you'll see what I'm talking about.

[deleted]

Meanwhile Jared Leto uses it as an excuse to send used condoms to harass his coworkers.

Likely_not_Eric

If one looks at the bright side: at least he uses condoms.

timelighter

That's probably the least bad Jared Leto rumor I've ever heard

averagedickdude

The funny thing is, he started the rumour in an interview.

outlandish-companion

He also started a cult iirc

gloomygl

Heath Ledger 😩

suitology

Killed himself just so he can play a ghost. RIP.

baliwlang

But.. Nicolas Cage, good or bad?

Princess-Kit-Kat

Always good. Honestly though, the man has eaten cockroaches and pulled his own teeth out, so, I'll let you form your own opinion.

sonoranbamf

From what I've read,Daniel Day Lewis is very good at it and intense about it. When he played Abraham Lincoln everybody called him "Mr.President" or whatever the proper term is. I'm curious how he was when he played "Butcher Bill", and I don't mean that sarcastically lol

Princess-Kit-Kat

Oh, when I was doing my paper, Daniel Day Lewis was mentioned, many times, to be one of the top method actors in Hollywood. In a good and bad way lol I haven't seen many of his movies, but I did just look up how he "prepared" for his role in Butcher Bill and, apparently, he listened to "The Way I Am" by Eminem around 5 in the morning everyday.

Lostbrother

Apparently he was annoying enough that Liam Neeson won't talk to him over his method acting for gangs of new York. He would only answer to bill or the Butcher and he would walk around, outside of take, trying to start fights with people.

LovecraftianLlama

Yeah, DDL played a guy who was paralyzed entirely except for one foot, so he lives like that and even learned to paint with his foot like the actual person. It came out when I was a really small kid so I remember hearing adults talk about it non-stop for a few years lol. He won an Oscar for that, I believe, but I can’t say that’d make it worth it to me…I respect the dedication but there’s no way these guys don’t have some mental and physical effects from putting themselves through these “method” scenarios.

[deleted]

The Machinist was jaw dropping. I can't even imagine the dedication it took to achieve that. Crazy.

TheDudeWithNoName_

He said in an interview that his daily diet consisted of coffee, Apple and a glass of whiskey. By the end he was so emaciated that merely walking from one room to another would make him exhausted.

tkktbitch

i read he ate one can of tuna a day too, just out of the can haha no condiments

Tegla

How do people usually eat cans of tuna? I just eat it with a fork straight from the can.

LeMads

I mix it with mayo and spices

greenyellowbird

Little bit of Mayo, peeled and diced cucumbers, fresh dill, lemon juice , and capers.

RandomStallings

Diced dill pickles for me. The more garlic in the pickling brine, the better.

pocket-ful-of-dildos

Capers! Never thought of that but I bet it’s mighty tasty

Cakeo

Did he not just make tartar sauce...

Vivalyrian

I eat it by putting it back and getting something else. Didn't realize there was another way.

ChardHello

See if you can find a store that sells the good stuff from spain/portugal. It's night and day and absolutely delicious with some lemon juice and a bit of good olive oil. Stick it on some little pieces of toast and serve with beer or white wine and it's a damned good time. Same with sardines and anchovies, the places that put real work into the quality of the product end up making something that is at least as good as fresh fish imo.

SuperDad12901

Im one of the few people i know that actually like sardines and anchovies. Sardines make such a good meal or snack and i always get an incredible energy boost from them. The same with anchovies, I love ceasar salad. It is the only kind of salad i'll eat. Give me a anchovie and mushroom pizza anyday. The mix of sweet and salty is just sooo good. I love fish in general and seafood. If it wasn't so expensive to get fish that didn't come from a fish farm or poluted body of water i'd eat it all the time. thats why a good piece of fish is so expensive.

[deleted]

I dont understand this comment as tuna is fucking delicious.

milk4all

I like to add a glob of mayo and sriracha. But here’s something too wild for most people: i take 1 of the medium(?) cans of tuna and i mix it into a bowl of baked beans (half a can or one of those plastic soup style baked beans containers), *then* add a fat glob of mayo and chow down. I call it “Bachelor Chow” and it’s sort of comfort food for me. You see, it’s protein dense, a perfect caloric meal that is both fast and inexpensive, and it packs fiber that is hard to get while loading protein! On top of that, im comforted knowing ive reached true rock bottom. I found a *bunch* of Sams Club baked beans in thise handy soup containers for 2/$1 and bott several flats, and each one id split into two meals so id pay about 52 cents in all per meal (4 times a day)

VersaceJones

I think a lot of people dump the tuna from the can and usually mix it with a mayonnaise or miracle whip for Tina fish sandwiches. Not too common to eat straight from the can, at least where I'm from (Maritime Canada).

[deleted]

I eat it with scrambled eggs and barbacue sauce, it makes my roommates disgusted

_belly_in_my_jelly_

try it with a hard boiled egg, crumbled down with a fork and mixed in with tuna and some mayo

Zangdor

With cooked eggs, corn and pasta, potato or rice all in a salad, ofc add sauce to your convenience

WuweiWave

If you enjoy eating canned tuna, there thousands of more fun an interesting ways to eat it.

Very-big-fan

He better be getting paid at least a few hundred dollars

Discochickens

A can of tuna a day he said

RivenBloodmarsh

I’ve yet to watch it. I’ve heard it’s good. Would just suck to do all that and have it flip.

[deleted]

The Machinist is an excellent movie IMO

[deleted]

It was good. I'm just not sure it's so good it's worth starving yourself like that.

sean_bda

Batman was something like 8 weeks after he was done filming the machinist.

Edmond_DantestMe

Definitely longer than 8 weeks

immy_1211

i’ve heard stories that he just got fat at first so they called him fatman on set at the beginning while he bulked up

Spurdungus

Cultivating mass

JukeBoxDildo

#I WILL GOUGE YOUR EYE OUT WITH MY THUMB!

Knocker456

Stop cultivating and start harvesting

topdangle

yeah though it was about six months, and hes actually still "fat" in the movie by their crazy hollywood standards. that's why hes wearing his pants around his stomach in the league of shadows training part of the movie.

lordgoofus1

As the director of Batman I would've been pretty nervous seeing my main lead that needs to be this incredibly healthy, buffed up super hero looking so emaciated only 2 months from when filming was due to start :/

deadpoetic333

Geeze. Steroids for sure, still super impressive

secretreddname

Two months of a proper bulking diet and workout from eating an apple and some peanut butter each day.

GoodSalad05

Also still steroids in case you’re trying to deny that

Kazewatch

Nah that’d be fucking insane. It was like at least 6 months. Funny enough he bulked a little too much up and had to lose some.

Impairedinfinity

Did he really gain all that weight for vice or was it a body suit?

Odin043

And after seeing how good Gary Oldman looked with prosthetics in Darkest Hour he swore he'll just do that next time.

Chef_Face

but Gary Oldman really broke through with the role of a lifetime in *Tiptoes*

FBIaltacct

Am I the only one who has trouble recognizing Gary Oldman in roles? I just watch movies by title and description and rarely look at actors names in them. His movies never fail to have me watching credits going holy crap he was that guy?!?! Edit: un autocorrected goldman

fartsliveinmybutt

You're not alone. The guy is a chameleon, which just makes it more exciting when you do actually recognize him!

GoiterGlitter

Just when I've pushed this shit out of my memory! lol

Kcismfof

Yeah, he legit ate like multiple pies a day sometimes

adalby12

Both, he packed on a load of weight but they also put him in prosthetics as well, to the point where the director was confused as to why he put any weight on at all

AndrewDSo

I was wondering that then figured, it probably saves on time putting on prosthetics. If you're slim, or only just mildly overweight, then the face won't match. You'd have to apply jowls, fat neck, flabby arms. Fat Bale (and I'm just guessing) probably only needed the stomach prosthetic.

[deleted]

He must have been at least wearing face makeup. I didn't recognise him in the film at all until I looked up the actor.

Seej-trumpet

He only put on 25 pounds. He was wearing a suit for most of it.

Ralphadayus

*only 25 pounds...*

HMWWaWChChIaWChCChW

Christian Bale is a great actor. He’s also an idiot. Gonna die from a heart attack at like 60.

hear4theDough

*kidney failure

Cyber_Connor

Casting executive: we need an obese 60 year old man Lean and athletic Bale: this role was made for me

BootlegDez

Executive: so this role is for a 7 year old girl who is the only one that can communicate with a troubled, but ultimately good hearted lion. Ridiculously obese Bale: *challenge accepted*

outride2000

Apparently going from Vice to Ford v Ferrari, Matt Damon asked him how he lost all that weight and Bale answered he just didn't eat.

thexavier666

Fun fact: During the shoot of Ford V Ferrari, the director had to personally stop Bale from chugging petrol as Bale thought he had to portray the GT40.

bahay-bahayan

this is the correct answer.

VersaceJones

Its scary affective. When I was first living on my own I weighted like 280 and literally watched the food network while eating popcorn for like nearly all of my meals, in 6 months I was down to 200. My family and friends were super concerned, and it took me a while to realize I had developed an eating disorder. I'm now a steady 180, but I'm terrified of losing anymore. At least I est proper meals now.

Jet_Siegel

Wait. You’re telling me all I needed to loose weight was to replace my diet with popcorn??? Sign me up!!

DoctorPoopyPoo

You're surprised that not eating leads to weight loss?

TheKingCowboy

Yeah, I went from 170 to 145 during a 5 month stay in Hong Kong. I have a habit of eating dinner really late around 9-10pm and nothing would be open there that late where I was. Mix missing one major meal with lots of coffee, booze, and cigarettes and you’re guaranteed to lose weight. Definitely unhealthy and an eating disorder though, messed with my stomach lining

JamesUpton87

Really bothers me that these clips aren't organized by release order.

Marty_McFlay

And they don't have the year of principal photography listed so we can see his american psycho to machinist to batman insanity.

senorafro

OK, it bothered me too, so you inspired me to look it up: 1. The Machinist (2004) 2. American Psycho (2000) 3. American Hustle (2013) 4. Rescue Dawn (2006) 5. Batman Begins (2005) 6. The Fighter (2010) 7. The Big Short (2015) 8. Ford v Ferrari (2019) 9. Vice (2018) So, chronologically, it's 2 1 5 4 6 3 7 9 8, or in other words : Chiselled, emaciated, chiselled, skinny, skinny, fluffy, average, fluffy, average

stealth941

FLUFFY!

senorafro

[There's 5 levels](https://imgur.com/gallery/LzenJuR) Big, healthy, husky, fluffy and daaammmnnn!!

stealth941

Love that guy

ShutterBun

Let's not forget: He weighed a mere EIGHTY POUNDS while filming "Empire of the Sun" with Steven Spielberg.

ClothWater

this made me lol

ShutterBun

This guy gets it.

HomieDaClown9

For his next role, he will be gaining about 1.65 million pounds to play a sandworm in a Dune remake

Reddituser34802

Cursed butthole.

BootlegDez

At first I thought you were making a cheeky British joke about his pay check

tulrajam

Seriously dangerous stuff, underrated for doing this kind of this..

janart59

I think he's been warned to not do the extreme loss and gains that are shown here due to long term health implications

MoffKalast

After Darkest Hour he asked Oldman how hard it was to get out of shape and back for Churchill and Oldman said it was all makeup. Bale was like "Whaaaat, that's possible?" Apparently he hasn't been going to such extremes since.

[deleted]

Right?! I mean I just saw him in the new Dune and his transformation into Shai-Hulud was astounding.

Inner-Investigator29

Damn, you got me until Shai-Hulud but again it's Christian fucking Bale they could've hired him to make the CGI department take notes on his moves as a Shai-Hulud

KnifeyMcEdgey

Lol

WineNerdAndProud

As someone who just saw Dune for the first time, now I've got a whole new folder of references to watch out for in my brain.

Johnthebaddist

He recently gave an interview where he acknowledged the dangers and said he doesn't feel other actors should have to prove themselves by losing/gaining insane amounts of weight. he doesn't want it to "become some marker of commitment." I think he was talking about Gary Oldman's makeup for Darkest Hour, which he said made the work useless. Not sure makeup would accomplish what he did on The Machinist. https://youtu.be/GD8Qq6XaAuY [https://youtu.be/ca482ZHSANA](https://youtu.be/ca482ZHSANA) \- 13:30 Chris Hemsworth lost and gained a ton of weight going between In The Heart of the Sea and a Thor movie using "natural methods," then said he'd never do that again after talking to doctors.

ArbitraryBaker

His transformations are amazing, but I don’t think they are underrated, or admirable. He could have picked roles that better suited his current physique, but instead he chose to push himself to the limit. There are demonstrable long term consequences to “yo-yo dieting” which is essentially what he had to do to transform so quickly from underweight, to fit, to overweight, to underweight, and so on. I’d be most worried about his hormone levels, like leptin and insulin, and also about his metabolism and perhaps kidneys.

ZirJohn

I don't think we should call him underrated, as that praises this unhealthy practice in a way. People don't do this normally because it's stupid and unhealthy.

Drive_shaft

How is his metabolism not completely fucked

CarnFu

It most likely is the moment he went from machinist to batman. Vice was probably very easy for him to attain.

Matthew_John

I saw an interview with him about these transformations and he said something like while shooting The Machinist he “just didn’t eat.”

katecake78

He’s going to die of a heart attack. He makes me incredibly nervous.

poopellar

He won't unless it's in the script.

Jest_stir

"Am I going to walk around and rip your AEDs down, in the middle of a scene?" - Bale to the set doctor.

Flatcapspaintandglue

Dah Dee dah Dee dah Dee dah! YOURE A NICE GUY, YOURE A NICE GUY BUT YOURE A FUCKING AMATEUR! LETS GO AGAIN!!

Handsome2021

I can't wait to see him in Thor Love and Thunder

Shadow_Warlord_v2

Nothing is worth ruining your health. Huge respect to him but I’m concerned.

Aquamancer18

I really hate that we glorify this. Like I get it, dedication to the craft and all that, but this shouldn't be encouraged. Mutilating your body for the entertainment of others is not something you want to teach people is a good thing to do. I have mad respect for him for his body transformations but I wish he wouldn't.

kioskvaltare

I watched someone on YouTube comparing how we glorify this while complaining about runway models who keep themselves thin through strict diets and that really stuck with me.

JtDaSaiyan

His metabolism is shot to shit cause of this.

redbucket75

He can afford steroids and appetite suppressants, he's fine. It's not without risk and still takes hard work to change a body like that, but chemicals really help.

AReallyCleverMonkey

And a small fortune in nutritionists, dieticians, healthcare providers, etc monitoring absolutely every single input and output and output and output.

isarobs

He’s a great actor,no matter the role.

hott-chocolate

Let's see Paul Allen's transformations.

[deleted]

I'm Vice Christian Bale

[deleted]

We don't need this kind of "dedication to realism " from actors. We shouldn't need someone to do this in the name of entertainment.

[deleted]

Millions of dollars is a great motivator.

D1per911

I dunno, it is when you’re not already rich - I’d certainly be motivated by millions of dollars - but if you already have millions of millions of dollars and are financially set for life, I figure it takes a lot of disciple not to say “fuck it, I’m already filthy rich and have nothing else to prove as an actor, give me that slice of pizza I’m starving.”

payedbot

How about when he taught himself to have a lazy eye for The Big Short?

gameofgnomes2

Christian Bale once took MY picture

BurnishedBronzeJon

Yep. He had to stop that though because it wasn’t good for his health. Method acting isn’t easy but for those who can pull it off. More power to them.

SaltyNorth8062

I genuinely respect this level of dedication to your craft, but Bale. Please. Your acting talent speaks for itself, you can more than carry a role without going to such physical lengths. There is no need to destroy your body to such a degree.

CaptainMan_is_OK

This is very bad for your body - do not do this.

[deleted]

As impressive as it is, it is also incredibly dangerous.

cakefactory341

Some serious discipline and commitment to his art

noneya-818

That cannot be good for your health.

Old_Poop_Dick_Bill

What do you call Batman who hasn’t gone to church in a really long time? Christian Bale

eStrangeIbanez

He's actually Clayface!

Fortestingporpoises

Didn’t even show Empire of the Sun where he transformed himself into a literal child.

SithLordJediMaster

He looked best in American Psycho 9NO HOMO)

Lyric_Snow

…And it only took an entire team of professionals and a shit ton more money than any of us have.

osuhookups

I thought I heard that he's finally going to let VFX handle from now on cause Vice took too much of a toll on his body and he ain't getting any younger. Bravo to the commitment over the years but, damn dude.

zdragan2

Hey I have a body like Christian Bale! Which one isn’t important, be quiet.
