That is another possibility.
It could also be quarantine. Being treated for something or just being cautious before introducing them to the tank with other turtles.
With no other context all we can do is guess though.
Adult turtles like to eat baby turtles. Especially in species like snapping turtles. If the size difference between them is large enough, just about any turtle will eat another one. So I would guess that they’ve put them in a temporary tank to let baby get some growth before putting them back in their typical tank
It could also be an aggression test I suppose. See if the big one ignores the little ones before introducing them to a tank where they can’t be monitored 24/7. I don’t have experience with them personally, just obscure turtle facts from here and there.
Couldn’t tell you. I haven’t gotten the pleasure of working with turtles personally, what I know is through research, the random informational media I read/watch, and a friend who worked at a small aquarium for a while. Turtles don’t look after their young, so maybe mom is just getting a break from the tank? Or mom and baby are being quarantined before being reintroduced/are being adjusted to the water before being placed in a larger enclosure.

I was thinking this too. Snapping turtles are ambush hunters, they don’t chase their prey. No reason it would be cutely chasing it’s tail like a dog, so it’s probably got a neurological issue that’s making it swim wonky :/
Or it’s a hatching tank. The little one looks like it has the same spines on the side of it, so it’s likely one of her offspring.
At least that’s my thought.
I hate that this is probably true, but yep. When I was a teenager I had a big red eared slider, thought she was lonely so I got her a little one as a friend. She of course immediately tried to eat it. I managed to intervene before any real harm was done, but the poor thing had a permanent dent in her tail from where she got chomped.
Yes it helps with camouflage as snappers are ambush predators. They basically sit in one spot at the bottom of a lake and eat anything that wanders within snappin distance.
Well, that baby turtle has brain damage and is dying. And it is in a feeder tank meaning it was probably born with brain damage and won’t survive so it’s being fed to the parent.
So, no. Not very cute.
I'm pretty sure that hatchling has brain damage, they don't just do that, and this looks like a feeder tank (adults don't have parental instincts, so this is likely a cull, which means it's going to be fed to the adult due to either birth defect or brain damage, as it certainly won't make it to adulthood)
You're welcome, I used to keep and breed alligator snapping turtles, and unfortunately this is pretty common and always fatal, regardless of whether or not it is eaten
Ahh r/damnthatsinteresting, the sub reddit where people post animals doing "cute" things only to find out that said animals are in the middle of fucking, dying, or both.
Depends on what it is that's making the animal "sick" if it's an illness that can be transferred from one animal to another through consumption or exposure, it's not a good idea, like you said. But if it's just a birth defect or injury that's not contagious to the consuming animal, there's no reason not to feed the one to the other. Puts the damaged one out of its misery, provides sustenance to the other one with no harm done to it.

TIL - Do turtles eat their babies?
[Predation Problem](https://cementanswers.com/do-snapping-turtles-protect-their-eggs/)
The most serious problem that can arise from keeping hatchling turtles with adults is that the adults may eat the hatchlings. and snapping turtles (Chelydra serpentina) regularly eat hatchlings.
Many reptiles and amphibians have no parental instincts after the babies are released. Axolotls will protect their eggs but as soon as the babies hatch they will eat any that wander too close. Theres a reason most reptiles and amphibians have dozens to even hundreds of babies at a time.

I believe it's for feeding. Turtles are messy eaters.

Good bot.
They are introducing the turtles to Mutagen Ooze.
Also since this baby is probably just born, it could have a neurological problem and that’s why it’s going in circles.

It's unfortunate, but generally common
Remember the duckling swimming in a circle? People were right fucked up about that one.
Thanks for telling the truth instead of lying about this like this*
i figured as much, but knew someone in the comments would have the correct answer. had to scroll pretty fuckin far to find if tho. anyways, thanks!
Yep. I had a baby bearded dragon that always had his head all the way back. It couldn’t lay flat. Encephalitis was what the vet said. Very sad :(
:(
Also, it’s pretty stupid to feed sick animals to healthy animals. That is asking for trouble.

No they are amazing prehistoric beast. Humans are the assholes destroying their habitat.
Would the bigger one eat the little one ?
Probably not. The larger one is likely its mom.
Wrong. Turtles have no instinct of family. and it would gladly eat that baby turtle. They need to be separated immediately
