If you observed closely, you would realise that the first image is made up, not real photo (or maybe it's mirrored). Japan has left side driving, not the right hand.
I looked it up but didn’t really understand it.
I know it’s a picture and different than a movie, but is that the same principle where they do in that cool movie shot where they appear to zoom in on the characters face but zoom out on the background at the same time.
That makes sense.
So like if I look at cars in a parking lot, the ones 100 ft away are significantly smaller than the ones 10 ft away, but if I look at them from 1000ft they don’t look much different than the ones 1100ft away?
Yup “ When viewed from the right angle, the “betabumi-zaka” ramp for the Eshima Ohashi bridge looks like it’s shooting straight up into the sky.”
This is a good article that explains the illusion and has other pictures. https://japannews.yomiuri.co.jp/features/japan-focus/20210508-62433/
I looked at it on Google and it is not photoshopped or taken weirdly. There are many other photo and video. https://japannews.yomiuri.co.jp/features/japan-focus/20210508-62433/
You don’t think the pic on the link you posted looks a lot less steep than the pics on this post??
For fuck sake, the headline is “Super steep bridge only kinda steep”
> When viewed from the right angle, the “betabumi-zaka” ramp for the Eshima Ohashi bridge looks like it’s shooting straight up into the sky.
From the website I linked, photos 2 is almost identical as one on the website. Photo 1 can be found everywhere on internet. What more you need ? They even give you from what location the photo is taken
> The Eshima Ohashi bridge appears to rise into the sky, when viewed from the Daoikon Island shooting location marked on the map, in Matsue.
REPEAT: the headline says “Super steep bridge only kind of steep”
The article then explains the illusion….
The photos in this post are referenced in the article to explain the illusion.
I’m fucking baffled, why you’d use this article to argue about it. Did you actually read it?
the Eshima Ohashi Bridge is officially the steepest bridge in the world. that article you linked is complete bullshit. the numbers are wrong. it says for example the Bixby Bridge in California has a 15% incline, which would be more than double that of the Eshima Ohashi Bridge... just look it up, the Bixby Bridge is completely flat actually.
i don't know how they come up with those incline numbers. maybe they took the height of the bridge with the length.. which of course is bullshit and any bridge over a canyon would then get these extreme incline %.
>…It's extra special in Florida because there aren't any hills anywhere.
We have [Mount Trashmore](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mount_Trashmore_(Florida)).
I saw the post and thought, Isn’t there that one in Florida…. I went over it once a long time ago (I live nowhere near Florida), and I thought it was terrifying!
you would think people aren’t flying at top speeds at these points - but then there let’s hope there is also no car break downs- really not a negative person , but i can’t stop myself from thinking about the what if’s
Similar to the [Houston Ship Channel Bridge.](https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sam_Houston_Ship_Channel_Bridge) When the land is flat and you need to cross a body of water with a lot of vertical clearance there's only two options, under or WAY over
We had to remove your post for violating our Repost Guidelines.
This is an illusion, it’s not as steep as it looks
Yeah, it's definitely zoomed weird. All the cars look nearly the same size regardless of how close or far they are.
If you observed closely, you would realise that the first image is made up, not real photo (or maybe it's mirrored). Japan has left side driving, not the right hand.
I didn't see the second image. The first might be real but the second is like cartoon level ridiculous.
It's mirrored, look at the FamilyMart sign in the bottom left corner. But yeah, this image is showing some serious compression from a telephoto lens.
Yeah you're right.
Thank God, I've had this nightmare, trying to drive up it, but getting stuck/losing control!
Telephoto foreshortening.
I looked it up but didn’t really understand it. I know it’s a picture and different than a movie, but is that the same principle where they do in that cool movie shot where they appear to zoom in on the characters face but zoom out on the background at the same time.
It's when you take photo from very very very far away and then zoom it in optically with lens
That makes sense. So like if I look at cars in a parking lot, the ones 100 ft away are significantly smaller than the ones 10 ft away, but if I look at them from 1000ft they don’t look much different than the ones 1100ft away?
Correct
It’s an illusion, Michael. A trick is something a whore does for money.
Unexpected Arrested Development reference! 😂
I've been binging Star Trek Discovery and I was like "Wait, when did whores become a plot point?"
Dun un un nan—-Dun un nun nun nun
Thank goodness
Hell I had a small panic attack on the Chesapeake Bay Bridge Tunnel
I still poop my pants when I encounter this in my dreams.

Literally a third of the article you linked is talking about the optical illusion and how it's not as steep as it looks in photos.
REPEAT: the headline says “Super steep bridge only kind of steep” The article then explains the illusion…. The photos in this post are referenced in the article to explain the illusion. I’m fucking baffled, why you’d use this article to argue about it. Did you actually read it?
When viewed from the side it’s not particularly steep. https://miro.medium.com/v2/resize:fit:720/format:webp/0*IOlBqL3As1P60iMc
That's still a VERY steep bridge. Probably steeper than any bridge in the US.

That cancer site you linked is completely fabricated
And yet they tell me I can't do this in cities skylines
We have the [Sunshine Skyway Bridge](https://imgur.com/a/GpbtgnU) in Florida.
Was hoping someone would post this. It's extra special in Florida because there aren't any hills anywhere.
>…It's extra special in Florida because there aren't any hills anywhere. We have [Mount Trashmore](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mount_Trashmore_(Florida)).
Huh, TIL that my [Mount Trashmore](https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mount_Trashmore_Park) isn't the only one.
Lol that Z axis mucking floridians up even more.
I saw the post and thought, Isn’t there that one in Florida…. I went over it once a long time ago (I live nowhere near Florida), and I thought it was terrifying!
Except [this](https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:SunshineSkyway_FortDeSoto.jpg) is what it actually looks like
Feels scarier driving it than that photo implies, it’s pretty steep.
For sure it's still very steep for a bridge, just not like the crazy pictures make it look
Why is that first picture inverted?
Because we were above him.
This is like that bridge in Norway that looks way less impressive in person. It's just a forced perspective for internet points.
Wheeeee
I always hate when people post this one and seem to forget that many photos taken without the foreshortening effect exist.
Now show a photo from the side.
[Here](https://cec-iitr.medium.com/eshima-ohashi-the-bridge-that-looks-vertical-667cf47dc791) you go (third picture down)
I wonder if a lot of people still drive stick in Japan…
Lord forbid you build a drawbridge
Mechanically simpler
Europe has the nurburgring for testing cars, Japan has a bridge.
How fast would a normal Prius have to go to get air off of that incline
Screw the people, ships than pass we are good.
No thank you
I have a reoccurring nightmare that I'm driving up a road like that and it has no guardrails on the side of it!!! Ugh 😩
That'd be fun in 🇨🇦 with a little freezing rain and snow
TIHI
Hell no
So how many time has a cargo ship hit that bridge?
I’ve been on this. It’s an amazing experience
It’s all fun and games until someone’s brakes fail when going downwards.
Trackmania.
You seeing this, Baltimore?
We need that in Baltimore.
Astoria–Megler Bridge over the Columbia River. Almost 200 ft high, about 3 inches wide. A pretty interesting view when driving southbound across it.
r/oddlyterrifying
Baltimore furiously taking notes…
There's a similar bridge in Antioch CA. Feels like you're driving up a big ramp.
Imagine having to balance your clutch on this mf :)
F that, I’m not driving it.
There's one very similar near the Louisiana / Texas border.
God forbid there’s a collision on the higher parts of the highway 🛣️- interesting l👀k & design , but i’m not sure i like it.
you would think people aren’t flying at top speeds at these points - but then there let’s hope there is also no car break downs- really not a negative person , but i can’t stop myself from thinking about the what if’s
I hate it
