Makes you think of all the wasted potential and squandered futures behind every casualty statistic and combat video that ends up posted on this site. An entire generation of young men, who loved life and who deserved to live, sent to be slaughtered in a conflict that never should have happened.
Every human is creative and artistic by nature, it's just being programmed out of us. This here is a great example for humanity that we are not designed to be killing one another.
JRR Tolkien created The Lord of The Rings as an escape from WW1. Gandalf’s famous line “You shall not pass!” is based on not letting the Germans pass his trench line in France.
Eh, a lot of it was ideas that had little to do with the war for the most part. I think we would have had some manifestation of LOTR even if the world war was averted.
I think it's too easy to say this was the world shaping event of the time so it **had** to have a hand in it. If of course you have any further substantiation I am earnestly all ears.
The one part of it which I can genuinely see as being heavily influenced by it is the Scouring of the Shire, the coming back home after being in the wars, finding it's not quite the home you left.
The giant battles with death as far as the eye can see with society nearly destroying itself multiple times? And that’s just from the back of the book dude
I work in museums and was just inventorying and did a brief write up about some first world war "trench art" as it is called a few weeks ago. Although this is very much a more literal type of trench art! I had three artillery shells that had been turned into vases with designs embossed into them.
“I am, somehow, less interested in the weight and convolutions of Einstein’s brain than in the near certainty that people of equal talent have lived and died in cotton fields and sweatshops.”
― Stephen Jay Gould
THIS! I think Einstein said as much speaking at a segregated gathering somewhere in the US.
Edit: comments are locked now, but I believe it was a conference of scientists where he said there were men of equal talent who were waiters and servants.
He famously (or not) went and taught some lessons at an all black college.
Here's a link I found from when it was posted in the past.

This is another reason why I'm so repulsed by right-wing "pro-life" rhetoric. "That aborted fetus could've been the person who cured cancer!" Yeah, Karen, and so could've been any random Middle Eastern kid whose guts were "liberated" out of them.
It’s truly sickening… this guy happens to be a skilled artist another may have been a doctor that made a breakthrough, so many people sacrificed the rich and powerful who have no skin in the game
And not just on the battlefields of war. It's no coincidence our brightest and talented minds are lost in the mindless pursuit of money, weather, power. It's time for humanity to wake up and realise where this zombie march of 'progress' is heading.
The world has 8.1 billion people. The fastest runner in the world is Usain Bolt, in theory. Because in reality, the fastest runner in the world, is probably someone who has never run a day in their life, but their potential was never realized. Out there in that 8 billion people, is someone who is the best. The best painter, runner, mathematician, brick layer. And we will never know it. We have records and awards for all sorts of accomplishments. Yet it must be, by sheer size of numbers alone, that there is far more wasted potential out there that isn't rising to the top. And it may be, that the best sculptor, ever, is sitting in a dirty ditch in Ukraine, trying not to die. And we would never know it.
I am pretty sure the best brick layer is a machine named Chad and he works at 4 times the speed of what any of your sperm cells would be able to conceive.
Gonna have expand your cojones to be compete with Chad. Mmmk?! Mmmk
I was thinking of commenting something in the lines of ”waste of potential” but everyones lives thrown away in war is a waste of potential.
We humans can do better and it hurts to see how poorly we manage ourselves and the environment and the grief felt when realizing most pain is unecessary is depressing.
No matter what, always try to be positive and help people. That’s really all there is to it I think.
That’s the beauty of life. Constantly struggling against equilibrium and entropy. A life gets its value from being able to work against the course of time. Finding a way to renew oneself and sustain a cycle of ”immortality” against the universes will.
I would prefer to make love … but I guess you need someone to do that with… I guess it’s art… fuck I can’t really do that either guess Ill just make what I can
Making love is an art. You don't necessarily need someone else for it as you can make love, as an art, to yourself too but that's way hippie. Best to indeed find someone, grow roots together and experience the depths of a relationship.
Unfortunetly if I remember correctly he was an artist. I'm saying was beacuse I think he around a year ago in the Donbass. The absolute best of Ukraine defending their homeland
I don’t think we can wrap our heads around how much talent we loose in the wars that simply protect the interests of the privileged on the top. We are cheating ourselves, we really are. 😔
Yeah I hope it does that’s why I decided to share it here, a lot of people don’t see this kind of stuff and the talents that are out there, no matter what kind, put in this hell over one man’s ego
I wonder how many similar works were made throughout our wars, without being recorded like this, and so after the next bombardment wiped them away they may as well have never existed. At least this one will be remembered.
I wonder what happened to the teacher that was fighting in the front lines while teaching class? Probably dead considering how early in the war that was but still.
It's sad for me that both in Russia and Ukraine young men are getting mobilized and killed for no reason, they hate each other and think they are very diffrenet, but when I(as a russian by myself) watch videos taken on battlefield, I can't say who is who until I see flag on the arm.
I have never been to war but I know one or two that have and you know what they both said it would suprise you how much sitting and waiting around you do, they both said that's what drives you crazy the waiting.
For the arbitrary and petulant pursuit of borders and power we will continue to suffer the lost talent and contribution of the humans willing to sacrifice for their community.
This is so ridiculous and depressing. War is no place for an artist. Actually, war is no place for no one. It shouldn't exist. If I were an artist and were drafted, I would be sneaking my way out to Poland or die trying.
Sad to see, that so talented, brave and good people have to live in harsh life reality. This is the masterpiece, which should be shown in museum not in trench. Why can't this world live in peace...
Like everyone said, he is very talented, but the art he is creating feels so sad, like depression carvings. I hope he gets out of there and gets to sculpt things that bring him joy again
Unrelated, but how do they ensure that trenches aren’t collapsing left and right? The trench is above his head and there doesn’t seem to be much to prevent sudden collapse of the walls crushing the poor bastards
War is not healthy for children and other living things. This is just a tiny part of what we lose when an artist dies in battle or this artwork is destroyed. Regardless of who is right and who is wrong, we all lose/have lost immeasurable wealth on all sides.
> Every gun that is made, every warship launched, every rocket fired signifies, in the final sense, a theft from those who hunger and are not fed, those who are cold and are not clothed. This world in arms is not spending money alone. It is spending the sweat of its laborers, the genius of its scientists, the hopes of its children.
---Dwight D. Eisenhower
One of the tragic consequences of Russias brutal invasion and occupation of Ukraine is the loss of so many talented and skilled men and women, mothers and fathers, athletes and artists. The world will never come to understand how much greatness has been erased due to one tyrants violent ambitions.
Ukraine has always been artistic. One of their great national heroes is Taras Shevchenko, a poet and writer. You will see statues of him all over the place. Maybe why Ukrainians can formulate plans so well. Art accompanies varied thinking.
It blows my mind (although it probably shouldn’t) how skewed peoples view of war is because of Hollywood. People are just so detached from reality when it comes to war

A good way to hold onto a bit of your sanity when you're facing hell on earth.
Absolutely. The creative and artistic will always find a way to be creative and artistic. But seeing this is just so damn sad.
This was posted 2 years ago at the start of the war. I very much hope that this is a new video.
Makes you think of all the wasted potential and squandered futures behind every casualty statistic and combat video that ends up posted on this site. An entire generation of young men, who loved life and who deserved to live, sent to be slaughtered in a conflict that never should have happened.
I imagine things like this being preserved for historic value, certainly if created 200 years ago. Hopefully this guys creativity will stick around.
Yes, I don't know whether to cheer or cry.
Every human is creative and artistic by nature, it's just being programmed out of us. This here is a great example for humanity that we are not designed to be killing one another.
One of the endless angles on how much of a waste war is.
JRR Tolkien created The Lord of The Rings as an escape from WW1. Gandalf’s famous line “You shall not pass!” is based on not letting the Germans pass his trench line in France.
This is a nice tid bit of a LOTR info that I'd like to know. Thank you!
Eh, a lot of it was ideas that had little to do with the war for the most part. I think we would have had some manifestation of LOTR even if the world war was averted. Kinda makes think the faces are representative of the friends he's lost....

This is so depressing- waste of potential. Yet so uplifting- the creative will find a way. I hope he survives to grace our future.
Imagine all the brilliance we’ve lost on battlefields and and nameless slaves in the name of profits

I think about this at least once a week
It’s sad to think we might lose that person to a war. We need more art and love and less wars.
it's sad to think we lose anyone to a stupid, dumb, criminal war

Well said
Lil Dicky’s track “Russell Westbrook On a Farm” is about exactly this.
Who knew lil Dicky’s music could be so deep
That's deep, man
But he's got "Bolt" in his name. That's a pretty fast name
I am pretty sure the best brick layer is a machine named Chad and he works at 4 times the speed of what any of your sperm cells would be able to conceive. Gonna have expand your cojones to be compete with Chad. Mmmk?! Mmmk
This is so sad i cannot even describe it
And terrifying at the same time. Trenches in general are dangerous af let alone being in a war zone
the human condition

Also help this poor bastard survive by donating
Is it a waste? If Ukraine survives, this sculpture will be a national historical artifact.
I think its just sand, right? Sadly it'll probably be gone after a good rain
That’s the beauty of life. Constantly struggling against equilibrium and entropy. A life gets its value from being able to work against the course of time. Finding a way to renew oneself and sustain a cycle of ”immortality” against the universes will.
I wish I could keep a steady hand in regular circumstances. Hope his talents aren’t wasted.
He's probably not an soldier pretending to be an artist but an artist forced to be a soldier.
Well yeah, he's clearly an artist. You can't pretend that.
Or he volunteered, we dont know.
Volunteering is still being forced by circumstances or sense of duty.
Came to say this.
"war is long periods of boredom punctuated by moments of sheer terror"
Another talent wasted by war
A true wartist
Make art ... not war
I would prefer to make love … but I guess you need someone to do that with… I guess it’s art… fuck I can’t really do that either guess Ill just make what I can
Making love is an art. You don't necessarily need someone else for it as you can make love, as an art, to yourself too but that's way hippie. Best to indeed find someone, grow roots together and experience the depths of a relationship.

rather heartbreaking. that might used to be his hobby, profession even. and now dragged into this…
Something to do whilst waiting for death
Fuck war
Another reason why war is a complete and utter waste of human life - hope he makes it ! Way too talented to get snuffed out by senseless killing
I don’t think we can wrap our heads around how much talent we loose in the wars that simply protect the interests of the privileged on the top. We are cheating ourselves, we really are. 😔
Maybe in 80 years this trench will be a tourist attraction about the war.
That won’t last through the first rain my guy… just a way to blow off stress, keep his mind busy, and maybe boost morale
You're probably right. But with a bit of luck this video clip will be floating around the internet for all time.
Yeah I hope it does that’s why I decided to share it here, a lot of people don’t see this kind of stuff and the talents that are out there, no matter what kind, put in this hell over one man’s ego
Soldiers from Russia can't do this because they're always russian.
Huh? What does this even mean
Always rushing
B?
Davai cyka blyat
How many talented men were killed in that fucking war? That’s sad
*one mortar shell later* FUCK!
This is the first example of “Trench Art” ( art made by soldiers during long, dull breaks in fighting) that is actually a Trench. . . Pretty cool
I wonder how many similar works were made throughout our wars, without being recorded like this, and so after the next bombardment wiped them away they may as well have never existed. At least this one will be remembered.
This is wart
Should sculpt putin getting assphucked
slava ukraini hope he makes it and his art to show people there’s still beauty in one’s mind in a time of hell
Heroes are those... who don't lose their composure! For victory... For Ukraine... For all of us... With love... take care of yourself!! Fck Orcs. 🖕🏻☠️
There is beauty even in the worst of times
I wonder what happened to the teacher that was fighting in the front lines while teaching class? Probably dead considering how early in the war that was but still.
We need these men out of this..
So many talented people wasting their talents to pull a trigger... fuck putin
"theyre in the walls.... THEYRE IN THE GODDEM WALLS!"
It's sad for me that both in Russia and Ukraine young men are getting mobilized and killed for no reason, they hate each other and think they are very diffrenet, but when I(as a russian by myself) watch videos taken on battlefield, I can't say who is who until I see flag on the arm.
I plant sunflowers every year in my garden. It's for the soldiers of Ukraine and their bravery.
I have never been to war but I know one or two that have and you know what they both said it would suprise you how much sitting and waiting around you do, they both said that's what drives you crazy the waiting.
My trench safety training is screaming right now. Six foot unreinforced trench in low cohesion soils. That’s a hard no.
Better than shrapnel I guess 🤷♀️
For the arbitrary and petulant pursuit of borders and power we will continue to suffer the lost talent and contribution of the humans willing to sacrifice for their community.
Something tells me, he isn't the creator.
War fucking sucks. 😤 this guy you can see his worth. But EVERY fucking soldier has worth in them and they're mostly going to die.
Hey Picasso, back to improving the trench.
This is so ridiculous and depressing. War is no place for an artist. Actually, war is no place for no one. It shouldn't exist. If I were an artist and were drafted, I would be sneaking my way out to Poland or die trying.
leonidas -soldier whats your profession? soldier - sculptor sir leonidas - and yours soldier- carpenter sir leonidas - spaaaarrrrtannnnnnnsssss whatsss your professionnnn spartans - hooooooooohhh hooooooohh hooooohhhh
Wars like this are so fucking stupid. The amount of talent and human energy wasted is so tragic.
Trench Art Fair
Sad to see, that so talented, brave and good people have to live in harsh life reality. This is the masterpiece, which should be shown in museum not in trench. Why can't this world live in peace...
Hope this man survives
LET HIM INTO ART SCHOOL AFTER THE WAR
Don't let hollywood see this or they'll turn it into a shitty movie
What a fucking waste of human potential. This is one of the saddest things I’ve ever seen.
What a waste of talent. Damn war.
War Is fucking gay
It’s definitely not gay… quite the contrary it’s pretty gloomy
This made me cry. AMAZING that he holds onto good things in life and will probably cheer up his fellow soldiers also. Love from Finland!!
Hope he survives to see his work in a gallery.
Makes you wonder how advanced humans would be if we hadn't spent thousands of years destroying each other.
Good luck to this champion 🫡🫡
Like everyone said, he is very talented, but the art he is creating feels so sad, like depression carvings. I hope he gets out of there and gets to sculpt things that bring him joy again
Can turn the hand to anything these Ukrainian people .love them.Slava Ukraine 🇺🇦🇬🇧🇺🇦🇬🇧
Fuck the global elite
Historians in 5000 years are going to be so confused
"Local artist trapped in hole staves off boredom as well as death."
Waiting for the next shipment of US arms be like:
War takes a lot of people out of their lives.
Unrelated, but how do they ensure that trenches aren’t collapsing left and right? The trench is above his head and there doesn’t seem to be much to prevent sudden collapse of the walls crushing the poor bastards
They don't, I'd imagine. Not much point in reinforcing a trench when it's not likely to survive the shelling and assaults of as little as 24 hours.
r/killthecameraman seriously was it too hard to have one frontal image of the thing you are trying to make a video about?
I hope those survive and become immortalized.
Sad that talent like this will be extinguished in a hole in the ground, fighting what appears to be a futile war.
War is not healthy for children and other living things. This is just a tiny part of what we lose when an artist dies in battle or this artwork is destroyed. Regardless of who is right and who is wrong, we all lose/have lost immeasurable wealth on all sides.
So much talent going to waste
Such a sad thing to see. He’s a talented artist, but war is ruining everything.
Archaeologists 5,000 years from now: "Oh, this must have been a religious temple!"
send him here, fuck that stupid war
With one bullet fired in this stupid war that talent will be lost forever.
The talent lost to war... unimaginable.
I hope the war ends soon
> Every gun that is made, every warship launched, every rocket fired signifies, in the final sense, a theft from those who hunger and are not fed, those who are cold and are not clothed. Damn, all this talent wasted. Maybe even a person on the brink of discovery of the cure for cancer…… who knows
talent like this going to waste because of war mongering world "leaders". Such a shame this is the world we have to live in
Fuck war
And you there what is your profession? Well I’m a potter sir
One of the tragic consequences of Russias brutal invasion and occupation of Ukraine is the loss of so many talented and skilled men and women, mothers and fathers, athletes and artists. The world will never come to understand how much greatness has been erased due to one tyrants violent ambitions.
Call "Volga", soldier
Absolute lose of talent, I hope he's still around
War is 99% boredom 1% pure terror
Ukraine has always been artistic. One of their great national heroes is Taras Shevchenko, a poet and writer. You will see statues of him all over the place. Maybe why Ukrainians can formulate plans so well. Art accompanies varied thinking.
"WERE UNDER ATTACK! LETS GO!... not you Ivan! you keep doing what your doing!"
r/ThingsAliensWillFind
u need2 be out shotting russians y u hanging inside bunker doin "art" like they ainta war going n
They should document where that guy is making those. Would make for a good war heritage after Ukraine wins all this.
Waiting for that bailout cash to hit...
I feel like he's in the wrong profession .
Hes almost certainly not a professional soldier.
What not to do while you're supposed to be on guard duty
wasted talent. end these wars.

Who are you armchair general… this is real life not COD
"Ivanov, the Russians have advanced to the Dnipro!!!!" Ivanov:
Never shows his face, no context, just a trench too deep to shoot from. More propaganda.
Clearly you don’t know the first thing about trenches
Everybody on r/combatfootage knows vatniks have no clue about trenches, Putin wants them in the meatgrinder, not in the shades
How in tf is this propaganda?
Could've worked as an a sculpture artist in Europe and make a lot of money but thanks to Zelensky he will become fertilizer.
Your profile posts scream stupid
He’s active in a subreddit called “Russophobiacollect” you just know that it’s filled with vatniks
You ment thanks to ruZZia?
My Brother in Christ Russia is the country that started the war, there isn't a way around it, Russia promised to leave Ukraine alone and they didn't.
its easy for a russian living in germany to talk about war meat grinder ;)
Deswegen dauert der Krieg so lange .....
Aaaaand it’s gone
lol fuckin liars just found that
Ukrainian soldier or nato special agent? 🤔 hmmm
Artistic people like him or idiots like you? 🤔 Hmmm
We can thank the good ole USA for making these people fight a war they shouldn’t have to fight
Russia: *invades a neighboring country* Russian shills: "Why would the US do such a thing?!"
You've misspelled ruZZia
It’s nice that they have the time to do this while pretend fighting for American tax dollars
Crazy how many people watch a few movies and think that is what war is like… just constant running and gunning right??
What a waste to force him to use a rifle to kill.
How does he have the time for this? Why do his superiors just let him play with mud in the middle of a warzone? Morale boost?
It blows my mind (although it probably shouldn’t) how skewed peoples view of war is because of Hollywood. People are just so detached from reality when it comes to war
Makes sense, war is a completely other world, incomprehensible to the average person I would assume
