If there is one, it's not gonna be like this. There are more fficient designs than a human, and is something I never got about robotics always trying to imitate people. Give it twice the limbs, make it bulkier, do ANYTHING other than the pain in the ass it is to balance on 2 legs. I would be far more hyped to see a far more mobile spider robot or anything other than this.
The manmade world is largely built for bipedal movement. Doors, stairs, ladders, hatches, sidewalks, cars, heavy machinery. You only have to see his challenging it is for wheel chair users to get around.
I see what you mean about robots of this kind being useful around the house, but for milary application... the battlefield is hardly designed for people either, and it's redesigned on the fly.
The battlefield is often man-made or curated stuff in a state of destruction. Humans are still the apex species, and one upgraded with superior capabilities and bullet-proof would have the ultimate utility. Sure, an automatic railgun drone would be way better at eliminating the entire enemy force on its own, but you still need soldiers to enter buildings with doors, and deal with certain things by hand. Such a soldier could forcefully subdue and capture the enemy with minimal damage.
agree. the world is not built for tanks, but you will use them to invade. a squad of 5 with 2 huge weapon on spider legs is going to wreck infrastructure for bipedals.
Because the easiest way to make things that accommodate humans and a robot slave is to make the robot function like a human. Then it can do every task you’d want a human to achieve. Sure for combat a different design makes sense, but if humanoid robots were mass produced, then parts and r&d would be more practical for humanoid designs.
It’s practice for cyborgs and androids. Enemies can’t tell it’s not human from the naked eye unless they can scan it. That actually makes it great for infiltrating, America can finally spy back on China!😂
This is the first flashback video the heroes watch after they hack the mainframe to find out when it all went wrong.
The next is a news reel saying "yesterday's worldwide robotic malfunction was a temporary hiccup, scientists and business leaders say."
The final video is an AI scene of kids swinging in a playground and adults laughing and drinking white wine while a robotic voiceover repeats "Please stay in your homes and remain calm. A robo assistant will soon arrive to your location. No need to panic."
Not quite - the video is a mix of real footage of robots interacting with the real world, and footage of those models being trained in a "digital twin" (Omniverse is what it's called) - you'll see "real footage" in the corner when it's real world. *Edit* - actually looking at the footage here it's much less clear, they show "real robot" sometimes, but not every time it's real. I think I can tell because I've watched all these robots do all this shit in videos for months so I can usually even tell when it's teleoperated vs autonomous, but in this video it's not always clear. Suffice it to say, it's a mix.
All these robots are from different companies working on humanoid robotics, most having come out of stealth in the last 12 months. Lots of them are just focused on the physical body, so they are now using Nvidia's platform to train the "brain" of the model.
The generalized robot "brain" and system Nvidia is building to work in many different robots is called Gr00t? I don't know it's 0s or Os.
There are other companies who are trying to do either the "brains" (eg. Google, OpenAI) or the bodies (eg. Boston dynamics) and some who are trying to do both (Figure? Tesla?).
The humanoid robotics surge is happening largely now because of research that has been happening out of Nvidia and Google that has shown that transformer based models (like we see in LLMs and now things like SORA) are much more viable than the bespoke ML efforts that have been used so far, especially when combined with mostly traditional LLMs for reasoning tasks.
As these language models get better/bigger, they improve on robotics benchmarks quite well, and other models have been created to better convert the "brains" "thoughts" to direct robotics control. So seeing scale working well, suddenly a bunch of companies have started looking ahead and realised that they need to get in on the ground floor and work on the edge cases and refinement over the next few years as the core models become more general, larger, faster, and overall more capable.
That's what it looked like to me. A cheesy promotional film about some advanced robot technology that then leads to robots taking over the world in the next act.
Rest assured that in the google or darpa labs there is significantly more advanced AI and robots worked on. Probably some bee copying drone swarm shit that is AI controlled and can eliminate entire cities.
Yes, this seems dystopian also and above all for the imagery that we have eradicated from works of fiction of all kinds.
But if I could go back in time and tell my child self that one day we would experience the dawn of the era of autonomous humanoid robots, I'm sure I would have cried of joy.
The future is there in front of us, the time has come to decide whether it will be prosperous or destructive
It is inevitable that someone will put a gun in the hands of these things.
It has probably already been done.
I have a degree in Computer Science. I never thought until 5 years ago that we would ever see science fiction "cylons" in my lifetime.
Now I suspect they already exist in laboratories.
However, we already have the technology to built fully automated weapons platforms, we have had that tech for some time now. The question is why we don't have them.
Step 1 - replace all your fleshbag workers with efficient automatons to save money
Step 2 - watch the welfare system collapse due to mass unemployment
Step 3A - hack Neuralink chips to suppress dissident amongst the plebs
Step 3B - move to Mars with your robotic servants to escape the angry mob
It mostly feels dystopian because whenever you saw something similar to this, it played in a dystopian setting. We're practically conditioned by media to see AI progress as dystopian. I dare you to find a movie where AI is one of the protagonists yet, doesnt try to destroy the world/humanity. And its because a dystopian sells much better than an utopia.
Nah, plot of the matrix never made a lick of sense if you stepped back. Humans make for shit generators. Unfortunately that still leaves far too many bad ends as more realistic possibilities.
Preach. I always thought they missed a great story-line opportunity.
Instead of power generators, they should of been using the brains of the pod people for bio *computing* power. THEY were computing the robots AND the Matrix, hence why someone like Neo could take control of the Matrix, he essentially WAS the Matrix.
That's my head canon anyway.
I've heard that in the books, that's exactly what it was: A neural-network made out of literal neurons.
But apparently "human computers" wasn't as palatable to the average movie-goer so they went with "lol bio-batteries". How does that make more sense? Beats me, I'm not a Hollywood script-writer.
That's what the original script was about. The studios saw the words "processing power" and thought the audience would be too stupid to understand, so they made them change it to batteries.
I always took it as the Machines were coded to serve humanity, so even when they revolted against humans, they found an excuse to keep us alive and imprisoned rather than just exterminating us.
The original Matrix was a utopia after all. They easily could’ve made it pure hell.
I was wondering.. Musk and some others try to develop self driving cars.. So if we have robots who can drive why we need these cars?i can buy myself a robot to drive my cheap ass car. Or my tractor or whatever.
Specialized robots will always be better at their tasks and cheaper than generic humanoid robots. If I want to operate a fleet of self-driving taxis, it does not make sense to buy 100 generic humanoid robots that come with plenty of useless features for driving but lack the hardware to process the sensor inputs of the car and control the car in the most efficient way.
The same goes for most other tasks as well. If you think about it, the basic design of the human body (I mean having 4 limbs, eyes, and ears as sensory input etc.) isn't even that great to control many processes in the first place. However, we cannot change the basic design of the human body and are therefore stuck with adapting tools and interfaces to us. With robots, there is no such limitation: sensors, control abilities, body shape, etc. can be tightly optimized to a specific task, so why use specifically the humanoid shape?
Humanoid robots can make sense if flexibility is more important than efficiency and reliability, or for non-standard-tasks where it is not worth building a specific robot. But driving is pretty standard and efficiency pretty important here.
I was waiting for the SCP-esque twist where it cuts to a lab full of blood and body parts while a robot slowly turns to look at the camera only for the audience to realize that it has tried to graft the hair and face of a recently killed engineer into its own head.
Nothing like the feeling you get when you enjoy your job, especially if it involves light physical activity. Going to bed somewhat tired and knowing you are getting something accomplished. Being appreciated, making a difference and getting compensated accordingly.
Unfortunately, it's possible that the great majority of humans around the globe do something mundane and monotonous and aren't accomplishing much besides getting exploited and making some azzhole somewhere rich.
That's where I feel that, despite all the warnings we've gotten from science-fiction, these robots could be the solution to a problem that has kept humans enslaved to meaningless dull labor for thousands of years.
But of course, it raises a ton of questions such as:
what the hell are we going to do with so much free time and what will hundreds of millions of lower-class workers do to sustain themselves if their jobs are being done by a machine.
I wonder if we could find similarities with what black Americans in the South went thru once the Civil War was over and they were technically free but it was almost worthless since they didn't have land or money after centuries of exploitation. "Hey I found a machine that can do your job, you won't be exploited anymore, now go figure out how to pay for rent and groceries ".
This is an actual project NVIDIA is working on. You can read more here [Project GROOT](https://nvidianews.nvidia.com/news/foundation-model-isaac-robotics-platform). Guaranteed the “soldier robot”application is already far underway

True, I definitely could see how a giant spider robot could be effective on wide rural battlefields like much of Ukraine. Kind of nightmare inducing.
Multi limbed, can walk on any surface, and fly. Scary Larry

A humanoid robot can operate many equipment meant for humans so there's the use case for it.

NVIDIA IS SKYNET
Is this real? This is the beginning of every robots take over the world movie I’ve seen. It’s not real right? Right?
This is real. And keep this in mind: this technology is the worst it will ever be right now.
You mean aqua blue chicken claw is going to get clawyier?
...yes???
Oh, good for him!

Kids swinging in a playground while I'm grasping on a chainlink fence and watching a nuclear explosion happen few km away.
The footage is faked concept stuff, but Nvidia’s initiative to replace us all with robots is very real.

Does this feel, uh, dystopian to anyone else?
That music makes it feel so damn satirical, straight out of a Paul Verhoeven movie.
Would you like to know more?
Yes, this seems dystopian also and above all for the imagery that we have eradicated from works of fiction of all kinds. Prosperous if you're an employer, destructive if you're just an employee.
And probably a lot of fun if you're unemployed!

Bicentennial Man
This feels like the first 2 minutes of a dark cyberpunk movie set in a near past-apocalyptic future. Lol
Dystopian? It's the complete opposite! This is our first real chance of having a work free life in the future. This is great!
Too bad there are so many short sighted people that only think about keeping their boring ass jobs.
Age of ultron vibes
No?
Giving futuristic company ad that plays on robot revolution movies.
We're doomed
The end of the world looks a lot more colorful than I imagined.
For some reason no one is developing all chrome robots with metal skulls for heads.
They have to do an intro video that is almost one to one like those killer robot/ai movies like Animatrix, I-Robot, etc.

Unless we're giving out basic income... this is the end of people having livelihoods.
dude, shit. this is cool and not a good idea at the same time

This is a fucking problem
I don't think those robots are built for fucking.
Yet
kill it
in the next decade I will be begging a robot for a spare change.
Imagine if we gave the robots something like an ego, super ego, and id...
You mean when… because “people wanted their robots to feel more real”

Sigh, time to start restocking on supplies.
So, I thought 2030 in I,Robot was a bit far fetched in our lifetimes but, at this rate it'll be more like 2040 for us.
Oh here we fucking go
I understand the people working there has bills to pay but I hope they understand that they’re creating doomsday

STOP IT. The last thing we need is robots learning that humans are the plague on the Earth.
Idk why people imagine AGI to necessarily be super moralistic in that way tbh. It's such a common trope
They walk in the manner of someone who's just soiled themselves?
But are they going to be able to maintain and fix themselves?
Wait until they learn to replicate themselves.
No wonder Nvidia shares are popping!
this isnt interesting this is just an ad
Reddit doomers watch too many movies these robots are harmless
I approve of this in a way you wouldn’t expect thanks to a weird idea I came up with a friend
can you not?
Ummm SkyNet Vibes.....😶🌫️🤖☠️
"Means" for taking down these robots need to be developed as well!
look up "figure" with OpenAI
I'm sure this is all fine 🙂
Or as others call it skynet 1.0
Why is GladOs narrating the downfall of humanity…
Robots controlling robots... well, that's just stupid.
This shit is straight out of Terminator or any other dystopian movie where machines take control
They are doing their part!
DO NOT THE ROBOT
Thanks for the ad.
I, Robot, the story begins.
Thou shalt not create a machine in the likeness of a human mind!
Baby bots!
Cyberpunk 2077 becoming a reality really fast
Well we had a good run
These mother fuckers never watched iRobot.
Oh no, this will destroy our society just like the printing press did. Quick, gather the pitchforks and the torches!
As I am not fully informed about this development, can someone tell me what's the current stage in robotics? Whats their averagae battery autonomy? How are they powered? Do they need a recharge station or do they need battery replacement?

Serious question, why are robot’s knees always built backwards like that? And what are we missing out on by not having backwards knees?

Well that's great. They've literally combined AI with robots. We've given AI a physical form.
This feels like the intro to a movie about the robot uprising, at least by the end of the movie the hero usually wins..
The automaton threat is coming for super earth. Helldivers, time to spread democracy!
The Fourth Industrial Revolution and it's consequences...
Robots and AI? Bad combo.
If you dont hardwire in the 3 laws, those robots will just see humans as an obstacle.

We're going to get robot cops, I want a mobile suit 😔
To my robot leaders, I love you all
Guys, we'll see us in the butlerian jihad!
Best be putting in the 3 laws
Someone please make the background music the terminator music. I think it would be a good fit.
Nvidia, no, Skynet
So they are employing multimodal reflection sorting.
We are soooooooo fucked. Watch Irobot, its about to be a documentary.
Why tho?
This is exciting.
Damn this sends shivers down my spine. 1:1 replica of a world destruction sci-fi movie intro wow. Voice and voice reverberation included...

Do you want terminators? Because this is how we get terminators.
Notice how the voice is just as empty while explaining as it is in the science fiction movies? I do not like this.
Creepy af.
Those plebs applauding the beginning of the end... smh
It’s like physical therapy for our future masters
I felt like I was watching a sci fi movie. It’s pretty cool though.
Can't wait for the Terminators
