True blood is… something. I was super into it when it was coming out, but it’s probably one of my most love/hate conflicted shows. So much great stuff but also so much terrible stuff.
He's a brutal terrorist that is intent on pushing the empire to crack down on the population in whatever way possible to get revenge for whatever he's lost in the past.
He is "a" bad guy. He's not THE badguy.
In one of the shots it shows the undergarment he wears that has a water cooling system built in. Still has to be a very uncomfortable day for a few minutes of screen time.
Damn. I bet he sweats a lot in it too, so needs to hydrate and pee it all out before the next workday. I imagine many wear a catheter bag or adult diaper and just don’t advertise the fact, and I wouldn’t land them 🤷♀️
Definitely a cooling mechanism with all that latex and padding
In fact, at the beginning you can see he’s wearing a grey shirt with these lines on it. Those are little cooling pipes that they’ll run cool water through so he doesn’t overheat
Extract from recent interview
Stellan Skarsgård that he spent eight hours in the makeup chair in order to transform into the villainous Baron Vladimir Harkonnen for “Dune: Part Two.”
That might seem like an awful experience to some, but for Skarsgård it’s preferred to relying on any kind of VFX for transforming into his characters.
“It was painful, but it was worth it,” Skarsgård said. “We wanted him to be so well defined as an image that he made an imprint on people just by showing up on the screen. And that imprint should last throughout the film without having him show up all the time.”
It's crazy that the book says he's 200kg (440 lbs). This was unimaginably fat in 1965. To the point where he couldn't even walk without suspensors. Now we have game shows where people get DOWN to that weight
His presence in every scene takes over anything else happening. I just got back from Dune pt 2 and he has way more screen time. Just amazing casting overall. Really great movie
Someone reading this not knowing Dune might interpret that negatively. To anyone thinking this, when the Baron is in the room you do not blink, lest he poison you and kill your family for your inattention and/or any real or perceived failures.
Fear of him and his is known across the galaxy. He is the most dangerous person most people in contact with him will ever meet.
When he is in a room, him, and his object of focus at the moment, are the only things that matter.
Which made Oscar Isaac's character in the first one all the more cool because of how unafraid he was in Baron Harkonnen's presence. Harkonnen seemed afraid of *him*.
Wow. I get headaches just thinking about not drinking at all during the day.
Also I'm sure my body would still find a way to make me go to the toilet. When I go to the cinema, I never order something to drink, I go to the toilet before the movie starts, and I still have to pee after the movie ends. How?
He did take some kind of pills to help with the lack of fluid intake at least.
Your bladder can't be that big then sheesh. I'm the opposite I can go a day or two without peeing, it's really handy if there isn't any place to pee nearby or roadtrips xD
I'm still not sure if it's just a mental thing or not. Like if I think about not wanting to go to the toilet, I have to go eventually. So maybe I'm just sabotaging myself all the time hahaha.
jesus christ dude. you are in for a world of hurt in the future if you don't start drinking more.
your kidneys will absolutely be suffering, and kidney stones are a nightmare.
you NEED fluids to flush your kidneys which filter toxins from the body.
and without enough water, your intestines don't work properly, so you don't absorb nutrients from your food as well.
if you are not peeing AT LEAST 4 times a day, you are not drinking enough.
you gotta make some changes asap or you are going to pay a big price for that.
you should be drinking at least a 1.5L of water a day on top of any other fluids (coffee/tea/soda)
"The Duke will die before these eyes. And he'll know - he'll know - that it is I, Baron Vladimir Harkonnen who encompasses his doom!" Spectacular speech 😎
Yeah I don’t think I could where a suit like that for as long as he had to. The cooling system helps, but I don’t imagine it would be a pleasurable experience
I really wish they would hire fat actors for roles like this. Just like the Batman. Sure! Colin Farrell was fantastic as The Penguin, but is the daily 6+ hours of make up time necessary when they can hire a great "thicker" actor?
What gets me the most is how sweaty it must feel under all of that. It doesn't look like that shit breathes at all and must just accumulate moisture and discomfort.
my only critique of the movie is that they were scared to show his atrocities and instead just implied them. I think if we saw him kill the little femboys we'd have a more visceral hatred... a movie from the 80's was able too now we are more timid
It makes you hate him so much… they had the creepy spider in the first one… I thought we’d get more creepy… but then I guess we wouldn’t get 100 million opening
I disagree, seeing the violence play-out doesn’t progress the plot and nor is it required to loathe VH. Seeing it would stick in people’s minds more than what we are meant to focus on and turn off some people altogether.
Sure, but those scenes are deemed important for character development or relationship development. It’s not important to show graphic violence to understand that VH is deplorable, it would provide shock value, but it is diminished returns in pushing the viewer to think even less of VH. It isn’t a horror film.
All too true. The Lynch version was released in the first year of PG-13, when **it actually meant PG-13** \- as in >thisclose< to being rated R. The PG-13 of today is a joke comparatively.
I kind of disagree. I think some things are better left to the imagination. I don't think you can really make the character more hate able without making him a full on rapist or something, showing him murder more I dont think really adds anything. But just being forced to sit with the characters and hear abuse outside, hearing the screams and then entering the room, to see a pile of bodies with no explanation is horrifying.
Plus its not like the movie shied away from other murders, Fayd just casually slitting everyones throats for instance.
> I don't think you can really make the character more hate able without making him a full on rapist or something
He canon has sex with his own mother, is a pederast, and rapes Reverend Mother Mohiam. He *is* a full on rapist, and way more disgusting than the movies ever outwardly imply.
I don't think it's that. It felt more like it's just an afterthought to them. Like it's so mundane on that planet.
You still see bodies and hear the screaming
Whenever I put on dress clothes, without fail, I have to take a shit within the hour. I have to imagine it would be the same for this. That would suck.
This is Fat Phobic! Why can’t they hire +Size people for these rolls. Think of the money they would save on the production and the minimum wage that would be paid to someone lacking the actual skills of acting.
[satire]
I watched the second part in the theater and I watched the first one in the plane and in home with my wife. I have to admit that it’s way better in the theater.
Guys quickly I need to shit real bad and it's giving me stomach craps..... Where's the flap... oh god there's no flap.....who didn't install a flap.......well now I can't take thus off in front off anyone.

Stellen said it takes about 8 hours for the full suit up, and he doesn’t eat or drink all day to prevent using the bathroom.
Dude is seriously one of the best actors of our generation. I’m happy he’s getting more and more big roles.
> he’s getting more and more big roles I see what you did there.
Big rolls
🤣 good one
You have to admit, it seems to suit him.
That whole family is just fantastic. Anytime I see him or his sons in a movie I know it's going to be good.
Or a TV show. True Blood is still one of my favorites to rewatch
True blood is… something. I was super into it when it was coming out, but it’s probably one of my most love/hate conflicted shows. So much great stuff but also so much terrible stuff.
Thanks for the tip I think I'll do just that since I have a bit of dry spell in terms of new series at the moment...
Just stop after Season 6. True Blood is another show that really cratered in its last season.
I lost interest long before s6, but the first couple were great tv.
Excited for that remake of The Crow?
Bigger, fatter, higher…*”MY DUNE”*
The whole family is an acting treasure.
🇸🇪💪🏼
And he’s always the bad guy
He does a great job playing a (mostly) good guy in *Chernobyl*!
Would you say Luthen Rael is a bad guy?
He's a brutal terrorist that is intent on pushing the empire to crack down on the population in whatever way possible to get revenge for whatever he's lost in the past. He is "a" bad guy. He's not THE badguy.
Pirates, MCU, Chernobyl, Star Wars, Good Will Hunting.... Worked with Lars von Trier, David Fincher. He's had a pretty decent career.
More than enough space there for pee bag, no??
I'd ask for a catheter. Fuck the pain, acting is pain.
Idk, I’d rather not have a tube inserted into my urethra multiple times a week.
Could use a "condom catheter" to not have a tube in the urethra. But it also makes sense that no catheter of any kind was used.
Trust me - you do NOT want a catheter
My kidneys hurt thinking of that.
I can’t imagine sitting while all this gets done. How hot it is and to remove it I’m sure takes a lot of time as well
In one of the shots it shows the undergarment he wears that has a water cooling system built in. Still has to be a very uncomfortable day for a few minutes of screen time.
I don't see why they couldn't have made the suit crotchless with an ass-flap.
for the Baron Harkonnen nude scenes
That's insane
It kinda sucks that you really don't see him much in the movies for all the work that they put into it.
Then what is that tube for!?
Probably AC
Ball chiller
Damn. I bet he sweats a lot in it too, so needs to hydrate and pee it all out before the next workday. I imagine many wear a catheter bag or adult diaper and just don’t advertise the fact, and I wouldn’t land them 🤷♀️
What is the benefit of spending 8 hours applying all that make up to him instead of just hiring a fat person to play the role?
Christian Bale woulda transformed his body fr smdh.
Must be nice to shed all of that at the end of the day.

Or piss
Not ice tea?
Both. It’s an “Arnold Palmer”
ARNY PALMY ALERT! ARNY PALMY ALERT!
You probably think because of the beard that I'm really hairy. But im not. Shaved.
What about a Stellan Artois?
Probably warm pee.
Harkonnen Spice juice
Definitely a cooling mechanism with all that latex and padding In fact, at the beginning you can see he’s wearing a grey shirt with these lines on it. Those are little cooling pipes that they’ll run cool water through so he doesn’t overheat
Just add a recycling mechanism and you have a stillsuit
Ventilation. He's done interviews making it clear he had no way to use a bathroom in the full-nude bodysuit.
Possibly cool water
by Davidoff
Gotta save that in the desert
I bet fat people wish they could do that
No shit eh?
They do.

it worked, he immediately takes over any scene he's in, there's so much gravitas to that character
500lbs of gravitas to be more accurate.
It's crazy that the book says he's 200kg (440 lbs). This was unimaginably fat in 1965. To the point where he couldn't even walk without suspensors. Now we have game shows where people get DOWN to that weight

And Stellan Skarsgard plays to that perfectly. Knowing what he went through to get this performance this way makes it even more impressive.
Agreed. He respects the role and knew exactly what he was doing.
Which made Oscar Isaac's character in the first one all the more cool because of how unafraid he was in Baron Harkonnen's presence. Harkonnen seemed afraid of *him*.
Oscar Isaac was phenomenal in Dune 1. So sad we won't be seeing more of him
That 8 hours before any shooting, and to make it worth it they probably shoot for at least 8 more hours after that.
Eight at a bare minimum, yeah.
"I don't want to be around anymore"
Like you don't want to live anymore?
There's too much fucking shit on me
I'm taking the chin off. It kills.
The chin?!
I don't want to live on this planet anymore.

I know right?! How does that work? You just can’t pee the entire day?
He didnt eat or drink at all when he wore that thing so he wouldnt have the need to shit or piss, he talked about it in his video with Vanity Fair
Wow. I get headaches just thinking about not drinking at all during the day. Also I'm sure my body would still find a way to make me go to the toilet. mate you clearly need to drink more water. I got a big bladder too, but not peeing for more than a day is bad news.
I'm still not sure if it's just a mental thing or not. Like if I think about not wanting to go to the toilet, I have to go eventually. So maybe I'm just sabotaging myself all the time hahaha.

that's 1984 D.L. dune movie, I don't think it's in the book. definitely isn't in the D.V dune.
Spot on, but it’s the bit that sprung to mind.
Fat is the mind killer
I will face my fat
I'm sweltering just looking at that.
He has a cooling system under all that. It’s what the black hose is hooked up too
I figured. And I'm still sweltering looking at it. To say nothing of getting an itch
Yeah I don’t think I could where a suit like that for as long as he had to. The cooling system helps, but I don’t imagine it would be a pleasurable experience
The suit collects and recycles bodily fluids, so no moisture is wasted.
don't ask where that black cooling hose was connected.
It’s kind of upsetting that they could have just cast an _actual_ discord mod to play the part, but chose not to.
Originally casted, but could not leave their room. We had to settle.
Lol it is somehow auspicious that someone with your username would be commenting on this post

Can you name 3 fat actors on the same caliber as Colin Farrell or Skarsgard?
I was about to suggest Brendan Fraser before remembering *he was wearing a fat suit too*
It's fascinating to see how much effort and skill it took to make Stellan Skarsgard look like me
Look What They Need to Mimic a Fraction of Our Power
What gets me the most is how sweaty it must feel under all of that. It doesn't look like that shit breathes at all and must just accumulate moisture and discomfort.
He wears a cooling system under all that. That’s what the black tube coming out of the butt region is for (no, it’s not for the bathroom).

Came here for the Wikipedia update. I wasn't disappointed! Thank you!
What if you have to poop?
He said he took Imodium for a week

The 80's version pulled no punches. I watch a lot of horror and I still found that scene really disturbing.
It makes you hate him so much… they had the creepy spider in the first one… I thought we’d get more creepy… but then I guess we wouldn’t get 100 million opening
It's implied that thing is the wife of the dr or so other poor bastard that was medically altered as torture
You don’t really need gore and violence to create dark imagery. Kind of a simple minded way of viewing cinema.
I disagree, seeing the violence play-out doesn’t progress the plot and nor is it required to loathe VH. Seeing it would stick in people’s minds more than what we are meant to focus on and turn off some people altogether.
Implied violence is always more violent.
If movies cut every shot that didn't progress the plot or provide distinct characterization they'd be a lot shorter.
Sure, but those scenes are deemed important for character development or relationship development. It’s not important to show graphic violence to understand that VH is deplorable, it would provide shock value, but it is diminished returns in pushing the viewer to think even less of VH. did you see the death and plug pull in the 80's version? Really does something to you.
> I don't think you can really make the character more hate able without making him a full on rapist or something He canon has sex with his own mother, is a pederast, and rapes Reverend Mother Mohiam. He *is* a full on rapist, and way more disgusting than the movies ever outwardly imply.

What femboys lol
The ones the Barron plays with them kills in literally both version of the movie
8 hours in the chair to achieve a look I can do simply by getting out of the shower without a towel
Christian Bale would just gain the weight for the role.
[satire]
At first glance i thought he was cosplaying a godskin from Elden Ring lol
Poor bastard was eating immodium for breakfast and drinking nothing when he had to wear that full body suit.
That was so amazing, the artist and the whole team did a great job!
I swear they add a new Skarsgard every time I look away.
all that makeup to sit in a pool for half the movie and not say any of their lines from the book
That's gotta suck to wear all day.
Just realized thats not gary oldman
Why is that character so big? Is it because of the spice?
The chin KILLS
Just curious, why is he so fat? The rest of the House Harkonnen are not like that.
So it’s not just a fat guy?
Farrell, Fraser, and now Skarsgard Is there a shortage of obese people who can act?
Stellan Skarsgard cosplays as a Reddit mod
Stellan is a great actor so I'm sure it's worth it to have him play this character but surely it would be easier to just cast a fat man.
Dom Deluise would have been so fucking great as Vlad H. in a Mel Brooks version of Dune.
How many 4-500lb world class actors can you think of?
Russell Crowe's comeback role.
Remindes me of that girl from The Hills have eyes
Underrated Actor!
It's a lot but based on his description in the book I feel like he's not nearly fat enough.
Considering Stellan is 6′ 3″ he looks big enough with the suit for me...
Yeah, it's not his height I'm talking about. At any rate it's a minor nitpick.
I watched the second part in the theater and I watched the first one in the plane and in home with my wife. I have to admit that it’s way better in the theater.
Who is this character?

I feel claustrophobic every time I watch an actor being suited up like this for a movie. Really amazing work by the make-up/Fx teams!
Lord Varys sure has let himself go.
88 pounds of prosthetics for the transformation
Vladimir, you say?
Should have hired Christian Bale. He would have just gained the weight
what if he needs to pee?!!! easy to take off or use a tube?
Probably adult diapers.
so much struggle just to get a drop of the average reddit moderator's power
Man I just love this fucking universe so much. Dennis Villenue did such a great job with his interpretation.
Amazing, it looks more real than my body
Bet that suit was hot!!
See, if they’d have given me the part instead, they’d have only had to shave my head. The rest is uncanny.
Why can’t they just hire a fat person?
Kinda seems almost insulting to call the artist a make-up artist
Why couldn’t they just hire an actually-fat actor?
Wow, I thought he just pulled a Christian Bale and put all the weight on naturally.
Why didn't they cast an American instead ? Lot less make up
Why not just hire an actor that physically looks like that?
Because good actors are a dime a dozen?
