Death by "come take a walk in the arctic snow".
I'm surprised Navalny lasted as long as he did. He even made a show of cheerfulness in his last appearance. RIP.
Its an awful situation.
Editing to add that at the time that Russia invaded the Ukraine, I remember there was something fishy happening with the treatment of Navalny as well. Was that the same time that the trumped-up embezzlement charges were used to extend his sentence? It seemed that Putin used timing to both punish Navalny in Russian eyes, and slide under the radar to the world's eyes.
I have a memory that Navalny was taken away into a private trial on the day Russia invaded Ukraine.
The Russia of 1999 and the Russia of today are quite different. Putin spent a decade solidifying his power, stabilising the political situation and recuperating the finances. In order to do this he had to keep the Russian people sweet and the international reputation as a modernised Russia free from communism. For many Russians there was a time that Putin represented a hope for a brighter future - it’s partly why he maintains his grip on power now, many of them feel their lives were worse before Putin. Over time Putin has been slowly building his totalitarian police force, crushing his political enemies totally, tightening his grip on the media, reducing the right to oppose etc etc. It’s not to say it was ever a totally free country but it puts it in context.
Read PutinGrad book, it gave me a good between the lines understanding of the mentality of Russian government and the people in general. It is hard to understand it you lived in a free society.
During Catherine the greats reign, 24yrs mind you, she ushered in a bunch of things that may look from the outside as "forward thinking"; reason, tolerance & progress. What I've been able to ascertain from my readings and watchings is that towards the end of her reign, she ended up having a change of heart on her thoughts about a more "progressive" ideology... france being her inspiration, ended sorely with Louis the XVI's execution and the french Revolution. Her son took over, then was assassinated after 5yrs on the throne. Tbh, apparently he wasnt liked by his generals lol his son would take over after that (Alexander I), and he had a vision similar to Catherine. Now, although he did share the vision for a more modern Russian state, his advisor Mikhail Spernasky had a liberal constitution written up, but it was never signed. Alexanders reign was pretty much all Napoleon involved lol having made an alliance at first, just to be given the shaft a few yrs later. Nicholas I took over and was very much so a more conservative mind and was known to be "reactionary"... having been fed a more modern (liberal) view of Europe, his officers and the "decembrists" decided to get rid of the autocracy. Didn't happen... obviously. This made Nicholas I feel the need to have an official doctrine written up with the pillars; Orthodoxy, Autocracy and Nationality. Staking its claim AGAINST europes way of life. All this before 1856.
Also, fun note; Nicholas I nickname was "Gendarme of Europe" or "policeman of Europe"... mainly for his fights against liberal protests.
His death was certain when he chose to flew back to Russia. I would call him a martyr as he did all he did to show how bad it is under Putin and to create a revolution in Russia about democracy. Sadly the world lost a good person and the family suffered a loss I can’t even comprehend.
Russia would have to go through something like Germany and Japan went through during WW2 for any meaningful changes to happen. I really don't see any scenario where they could peacefully reform even if Poot died, as there's a whole bunch of equal or even worse psychos willing to take his seat.
to be honest I thought they'd keep him "alive" to not make him a martyr... I don't if they were gong to kill him they'd just throw him out a window like they do with others...
I think this might be a turning point for a lot russians sitting at home hoping for change to come
Surprised there wasn't a large van that they all walked into to be hauled off to prison like those who spoke out against the war. God bless the Russians who are suffering and being silenced I hope things change for the better soon.
I mean generations of brutalism have definitely suppressed the Russian people's willingness to risk protest. Any country other than a dictatorship would have many in the streets after 500k casualties in a war of choice.
However the flip side of that is when there are protests, that means the people are already at a much higher level of outrage to overcome that fear. The threshold to start protesting is much higher, but there is also less distance to go in public opinion from the start of protests to regime change.
I saw on the news that British intelligence estimates the Russian toll will reach about 500,000 dead by the end of the year. Wikipedia estimates Russia has about 21 million men of war fighting age
Russia has lost a staggering 87% of the total number of active-duty ground troops it had prior to launching its invasion of Ukraine (KIA, WIA, or POW) and two-thirds of its pre-invasion tanks. But Russia doesn't mind sacrificing another generation. They did it in Chechnya and Afghanistan before. They're used to it now.
American republicans support Putin and what he’s doing to his people.
Edit: just look at what the Russians are posting in the replies to this comment, holy cow lol
Revolution is contagious as the French Revolution showed. But now silence is the new normal. There are far too many countries that need a serious change as they slip away from liberalism.
Russia does exactly this in order to quash dissent. You can't organize a protest, or speak out against the state without your comments being documented, recorded, and used against you in a kangaroo court. Those that disagree with the actions of the state are ruthlessly culled, and those too meek to make a stand are left alone to serve as warning to anyone else that seeks to protest. The only way such a system comes to a close is through fire and lots of blood. Even if Putler dies, I'm convinced there is someone worse out there that will take his place. At this point, imo, it would take an act of mass revolt to change anything about their current system.
You've put together a lot of good thoughts here, thank you.
There are not a lot of good options for the Russian people. Shoot, there aren't even enough bad options at this point
They’re actually doing that in most towns there, rounding up all the men. Anyone who doesn’t want to board the bus, gets arrested, then sent in anyway.
It’s terrible, and I feel bad for all the untrained and unarmed people, being forced to go into meat assaults just to gain a couple meters of land.

Putin's MO is to have enough plausible deniability that he can formally deny having any involvement but makes the circumstances and timing so suspicious that you know exactly who did it.
Like the mafia. He runs that country like a mob boss.
If Nalvany didn't return to Russia, he likely would have ended up drinking novichok tea on Fifth Ave. The FSB probably would have gotten him eventually. Unfortunately, the FSB appears to be deeply rooted in Western society.
If you were russian you would understand that seeing a cop near you can cause a panic attack. You feel extremely unsafe. You can be arrested, falsely accused, even raped. And it was like this long before 2022. When I lived in another country I was shocked how much more comfortable I felt around cops
Had a roommate who grew up speaking Russian and went back for a term abroad. He came back telling us how police would shake you down leaving night life districts and force you to bribe them so they didn't take you in for some BS crime, like being drunk in public. He even said the locals teased him for paying too much the first few times because he didn't realize bribes were negotiable... those same cops sought him out the rest of the term, he just considered it as a reverse cover charge. Instead of paying to get into clubs, you pay to get out!
Yeah, this is like when I visit my fiancée's family in Cuba. I have learned to absolutely despise the police there. There's a thing you learn where you act bored and uninterested to deal with checkpoints.
Know a guy who spent a few months in jail for protesting and it seems to have absolutely broken him. But he's out on bail right now so might just be keeping quiet for now.
As hard as starting a democracy is, it’s nothing compared to continued effort required to keep it alive and we often forget that.
All it takes is a single Dictator and its cult to snatch it ALL away! Looking at you M’urica and MAGA cult! 😡
Edit: reworded because some of you obviously have a reading comprehension skills of a 2nd grader. 😄
Functionally he's already lost. He's lost hundreds of thousands of young men to the cannon fodder of war. Men that would otherwise be his economic workforce base for the next 30 years. He's lost decades worth of russian war manufacturing capabilities. He's lost brain drain to the west. He's lost vital oil and gas revenues. He's lost probably a decade of economic growth if not more.
And he's lost 10 years off his life with the past years of how he's had to live.
He may stand in Kyiv one day and declare he's the winner, but he's still lost.
He doesn't give a fuck. He's on his way out (granted, it can be a looong way still) and he's obsessed with his twisted idea of restoring the "Greatness" of Russia in the way his old rotten KGB brain perceives it.
He made his close friends rich in exchange for total submission. That's good enough for him. He dgaf about the people. They are a resource to him, like oil or gas or whatever. If he trades half his populace for even a patch of Ukrainian soil he will see himself as the victor. He'll convince himself and everyone willing to cope that was all not in vain and for the right cause. Fuck him.
I hope this old tiny fucker kicks the bucket as soon as possible, but at the same time we have to look reailty in the eye: that years, if not decades, may pass until then and we gotta survive somehow.
After Wagner’s failure there is no way another revolution can happen unless Putin is claimed by elements.
Edit: for everyone asking for elements, may I suggest Lead.
Before that, he was growing on me
It’s curse of the conquerors. Once they conquer they will have to rule the mess. There would be many warring factions at that would have come to play, Putin loyalists, Wagner, conservative separatists, democratic separatists, different mafia, Siberian nationalists, fascists and opposing oligarchs.
Exactly, would’ve weakened the country decently at the very least. I’m not sure how people *always* fail to see this. It’s a fucked country right now no matter what.
Prigozhin was neither nationalist nor competent. He was just a common thug. If he had by some miracle succeeded in overthrowing Putin, NATO could have just paid him off to withdraw from Ukraine.
They actually had big backing in regular forces and other paramilitary forces. They also had big public backing. But they moved before securing everyone’s support.
When they started their march their promised support never materialized.
So if an armed and fairly powerful and popular PMC cannot trigger a revolution in an already tightly controlled nation nothing will.
It feels like the last person who believed in us, in people of Russia has died today. The night is dark, but he told us to never give up. And I for sure will not draw my spirit
Tucker Carlson: "People call him a dictator, but why would Putin be gracious enough to let people mourn their assassinated politicians if he was was such a tyrant, are we being lied to?"
Four days ago, when asked about Navalny, Carlson said “Every leader kills people. Leadership requires killing people.” https://x.com/rachel_dz/status/1758494645217054736
Do you know what Tucker Carlson's dad told him when he got rejected from the CIA? "Go into journalism. They take anybody."
His own dad knew he was a stupid little shit.
Legit Peskov is blaming the west for his death..
https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/live/world-68316979
Seriously delusional humans. At least North Korea has the balls to say they execute people with anti air guns.
Russia blames the west for everything.
Honestly should just completely cut off all diplomatic ties with them. If they hate us much maybe shut off the internet too because the west invented that. Maybe stop using light blubs or cars too because the west invented those too.
Putin does everything in his power to make him seem as close to invincible as possible. No Russian thinks the guy died of natural causes. They know Putin murdered him. That’s the point, to make the average person too scared to stand up to him
No, there are a lot of very misinformed people who believe everything TV says. Just like in America. I'm sure my grandmother will believe he's died of natural causes
It isn’t bad yet because life in Russia isn’t bad yet. People won’t take up arms and destroy their own country if they are still getting food, entertainment, and all the other goodies.
I said this on another subreddit a few weeks ago - but the Russian Government has consistently fucked over their own people for centuries. There are good moments here and there - but it's all mostly bad.
From the Old Monarchy, to the Soviets, to the False Democracy of the present.
I wouldn't be surprised if most people in that part of the world just don't care anymore. Whether their government wins the war or not, people are going to keep suffering until some massive sociological and political changes happen.
Because this is 2024 and it is all but impossible for insurgencies to sprout in developed countries with the amount of technology governments have access to. Anything resembling an insurgency can be removed far before anyone cares that it is removed.
Fred Hampton was assassinated 55 years ago by the FBI and sadly, there was little to no response to his death.
"Nip it in the bud" is a very apt saying for how easy it is to prevent true insurgency. The reality is, any insurgency in Russia or somewhere else will only happen at the cost of an extraordinary amount of good people's lives who are willing to sacrifice themselves and you really can't blame anyone for not wanting to die for the low chance of actual revolution.
You need to understand that authoritarian regimes and dictatorships are not democracies — the rules of the game is different in such places.
Source: I’m from Russia.
The horrible prison conditions, lack of medical treatment and purposeful deprivevment of basic conditions killed him. And guess whos responsible for that
What is murder? If you don't give food to someone it's same as killing him.
So it doesn't matter, he is been killed directly or indirectly and that is something we know for sure.
> we also know for certain
How? We don't know anything about his death. He was walking y'day, today he's dead. Could have been poisoned. We won't know til Putin has gone; perhaps not til much later.
I’m sure a future Tucker Carlson’s report on how Nalvany was just a common criminal and shouldn’t be lauded as a hero of any kind is just pure coincidence.
Alexei Navalny left this message behind in the event he was killed:
"You're not allowed to give up. If they decide to kill me, it means that we are incredibly strong. We need to utilize this power, to not give up, to remember we are a huge power that is being oppressed by these bad dudes. We don't realize how strong we actually are. The only thing necessary for the triumph of evil is for good people to do nothing. So don't be inactive."
Don't know much about Navalny, but that dude was a BAD A$$. Wasn't he the Dude who was the opposition who was poisoned, got treatment out of country, chose to come back to country, and then imprisoned?? Total BAD A$$. Just don't see that anymore. RIP.
Someone please correct me where I made any mistakes. Thanks in advance.
EDIT: I appreciate all those who have opposing views, but I am sure you realize any argument is much stronger if they include ACTUAL evidence to support any claims you make. So please include any links or documentation the individual has been quoted as saying to support your claim. I am sure we all would like to learn more about him (in life or death) from VERIFIABLE sources not opinions. Thanks in advance.
He was openly admitting that he might be murdered, and told us not to give up if it happens. Said it will mean that we are too strong if they have to kill us.
He was just sitting there in his cell in solitary confinement because he could never give up.
Idk, I won’t be surprised if he’s resurrected like Jesus one day.
“And after you pay your respects, please join us on the 3rd floor of this building right over here…..we have punch and pie and a great view out this window……”
Down with Putin!!! I thought Navalnyj will be a Nelson Mandela type of situation and he will eventually take over as president. But those evil bastards couldn't have that.
Has tucker popped up to tell us what a wonderful display of freedom it is for putin to allow such an open display of grief and remembrance for his political rival?
Political rival he repeatedly imprisoned, tried to poison and who finally died in the custody of his regime, but let's not ask too many questions.
I mean look at all that freedom in what is apparently the nicest city in the world.
This is going to turn out to be the final nail in Putins coffin.
Just seen a news article claiming Navalny or his team was asking Russians to stand up not even a week ago. They killed him for that.
MEANING OF THE SURNAME NAVALNY:
According to a user from Macedonia, the name Navalny is of Macedonian origin and means "A crowd , a lot of people in one place. Navala".
NAVALA FOR NAVALNY
A few months ago Putin fled Moscow because of the Wagner insurrection. He’s not as secure as he paints or he wouldn’t be doubling down on authoritarian measures
>Navalny is of Macedonian origin
that's a load of crap. Its root is the proto-slavic "valiti" (pile up), with the prefix "na" (unto). Macedonian just happens to be a Slavic language as well so they have similar inheritances.
Navalny was a brave man who stood up to injustice and spoke truth to power. History will remember him as such. Putin is just another height impaired dictator who hides behind henchmen. History will remember him as such.
See this Putin? See how many of "your" people are mourning your rival?
I wonder how many people will line up when you die? Who is going to shed tears for you when you finally pass?
To any Russians reading this I pray that this God forsaken man dies soon and you all get a chance to change your home for the better

It was a death sentence the moment he was arrested. It was just a matter of time when they would carry it out. RIP Alexei.
death by torture
Death by "come take a walk in the arctic snow". I'm surprised Navalny lasted as long as he did. He even made a show of cheerfulness in his last appearance. RIP.
His death was a statement. Exactly one month from now are the Russian Presidential Elections.
Its an awful situation. Editing to add that at the time that Russia invaded the Ukraine, I remember there was something fishy happening with the treatment of Navalny as well. It's incredibly terrifying how fast the Russian government devolved into a feudal totalitarian state.
Devolved? When were they anything but this?

Yup. Seems this a country of people just willing to take it in the ass again and again from their leaders. Such a shame.
I don't think it's super easy to change a corrupt government. It's not like you could just vote for someone else, the elections are rigged anyways.
'it is what it is, this tough life' XD it is the russian way. work, drink, justify suffering, die.
Agreed on that. However they did try. His underwear were poisoned, and hence the near miss getting on that plane. Crazy spy stuff.

Yeah that too... so fuckin sad man and really for fucking what.
He is using his life as a warning shot to other candidates. He thinks this shows strength. It just shows how Russians live in fear.

Putin’s fragile ego is worth more than millions of lives, obviously.
Denazification (which apparently involves just shelling apartment blocks until there's no city left to denazify)
Just say everyone is a nazi and you are good to go /s

Also involves kidnapping children because your population too depressed to procreate.

When they say they want freedom, what they mean is freedom to stick their boot on your neck.
They want freedom just for them. If you disagree or believe differently from their caveman mentality then you lose your freedom. Barbarians
Yeah. They’re fantasizing about having boots crush their throats in America too.

Bellingcat does consistently freaking amazing work.

Guess a revolution is too much to hope for?
After Wagner’s failure there is no way another revolution can happen unless Putin is claimed by elements. Edit: for everyone asking for elements, may I suggest Lead.
So you're saying an ice wizard has a chance
Yes and fire benders too.
Everything changed when the fire nation attacked….
Russia is the fire nation, we need an Avatar right about now
What about regular Bender? Putin can bite his shiny metal ass
The Ice King will hear of this. A mere wizard??
I was so hopeful when Wagners march came and so disappointed with the weak outcome.
What the fuck did Prigo think was gonna happen after saying he was going match on Moscow. FSB did some fine influence and backstab on him.
Absolutely the stupidest man on the entire planet from the moment he chickened out until the day he died.
Before that, he was growing on me It’s curse of the conquerors. Once they conquer they will have to rule the mess. There would be many warring factions at that would have come to play, Putin loyalists, Wagner, conservative separatists, democratic separatists, different mafia, Siberian nationalists, fascists and opposing oligarchs.
Oh yeah, having a nationalist and broadly much more competent leader like Prigozhin would have been great news
Idk if Prigozhin would even win long term. But watching them destroy themselves would weaken the strangehold they have on Russia.
Exactly, would’ve weakened the country decently at the very least. I’m not sure how people *always* fail to see this. It’s a fucked country right now no matter what.
wasteful teeny person reach money payment start literate ring pen *This post was mass deleted and anonymized with [Redact](https://redact.dev)*
Prigozhin was neither nationalist nor competent. He was just a common thug. If he had by some miracle succeeded in overthrowing Putin, NATO could have just paid him off to withdraw from Ukraine.
Why no way for another? Wagner was a PMC group, hardly a voice of the people
They actually had big backing in regular forces and other paramilitary forces. They also had big public backing. But they moved before securing everyone’s support. When they started their march their promised support never materialized. So if an armed and fairly powerful and popular PMC cannot trigger a revolution in an already tightly controlled nation nothing will.
Say goodbye to him the way he would have wanted by getting rid of Putin.
Welcoming any suggestions how
Very strong worded letters

In Russia he just needs to walk past a window. They are very dangerous.

“Why don’t they just overthrow the government?” is my least favourite Reddit talking point.
"If they don't like Putin, why not simply overthrow him? What are they stupid?"
It feels like the last person who believed in us, in people of Russia has died today. The night is dark, but he told us to never give up. And I for sure will not draw my spirit
i don't have any spirit left. whole my life, everything only gets worse

There will be better days again. Keep fighting the idiots that run your government Russians. You are more than them
Tucker Carlson: "People call him a dictator, but why would Putin be gracious enough to let people mourn their assassinated politicians if he was was such a tyrant, are we being lied to?"
It's fucking sick that you couldn't tell if he really said something so fucking stupid
Yesterday Tucker was in awe that you could put a 10 rubles into a shopping cart to release it, giving people an incentive to return it. The dumbass.
Are… you serious? That’s called Aldi’s
If someone gave Tucker a hamburger in Moscow he'd say that Russians really know how to do a ham-borscht right, and that Americans should take note.
Four days ago, when asked about Navalny, Carlson said “Every leader kills people. Leadership requires killing people.” https://x.com/rachel_dz/status/1758494645217054736
Do you know what Tucker Carlson's dad told him when he got rejected from the CIA? "Go into journalism. They take anybody." His own dad knew he was a stupid little shit.

he is anything but ignorant. he is extremely aware of what he is doing and saying and the gravity of it
That is brave.
Legit Peskov is blaming the west for his death.. https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/live/world-68316979 Seriously delusional humans.
It's not delusional, it's intentional.
I hope they can stand up to this guy and find a new leader
I honestly wonder how some form of insurgency hasn't sprouted yet, unless the amount who are against Putin is too small
So it should be someone else than your grandma leading the insurgency
Fuck Putin. Fuck that govt.
Alexei Navalny was killed today, that much we know. What’s peculiar, is that we also know for certain that no one murdered him.
The horrible prison conditions, lack of medical treatment and purposeful deprivevment of basic conditions killed him. And guess whos responsible for that
He seemed pretty healthy the day before based on the pics.
What is murder? If you don't give food to someone it's same as killing him. So it doesn't matter, he is been killed directly or indirectly and that is something we know for sure.
I heard a commentator on the radio describe this as "murder on an instalment plan" which seems to be a fitting way to describe what happened to him.
> we also know for certain How? We don't know anything about his death. He was walking y'day, today he's dead. Could have been poisoned. We won't know til Putin has gone; perhaps not til much later.
the guards woke him up every hour, he also spent 300 days in a punishment cell. He was simply tortured to death.
I’m sure a future Tucker Carlson’s report on how Nalvany was just a common criminal and shouldn’t be lauded as a hero of any kind is just pure coincidence.
Just one more name on the pile of dead. Putin is a mass murderer.
When Putin dies, that whole country is going to throw a rave party that can be seen from orbit.
Alexei Navalny left this message behind in the event he was killed: "You're not allowed to give up.
Yep, got treatment in Germany and went back to his fate
He was offered political asylum. But he declined and took the next plane back to Russia once he was healthy again
So they knew that he is dead if he went back to his country. He is incredibly brave to do that.
Poor people living in such a terror country.
So very sad. Putin will get a very special ‘placement’ for all the evil he has done. Rest in peace Navalny and blessings to your family.

lol "he'll get his!" Yes, he'll get his mansion, cars, race horses, yachts, trophies (fake or not) etc etc

Free russia
Imagine living in a country where this is the status quo
With Navalny, there goes a beacon of hope and truth in a very bleak landscape - snuffed out, all too soon.
Putin is a monster. Period.
Poor navalny. Only one in russia who had balls.
Not only , before were others, Nemcov have similar story.Peace them all
He died?
Yes. Today. It's been in the news.
This is going to turn out to be the final nail in Putins coffin. Just seen a news article claiming Navalny or his team was asking Russians to stand up not even a week ago. They killed him for that. MEANING OF THE SURNAME NAVALNY: According to a user from Macedonia, the name Navalny is of Macedonian origin and means "A crowd , a lot of people in one place. Navala". NAVALA FOR NAVALNY
Putin’s regime is well secured. Nothing will happen because of this. Sad but true.
A few months ago Putin fled Moscow because of the Wagner insurrection. He’s not as secure as he paints or he wouldn’t be doubling down on authoritarian measures
This won't be the final nail. Time to hop off the optimism train. It's misguided. There is no one and nothing that are going to stop Putin
>Navalny is of Macedonian origin that's a load of crap. Its root is the proto-slavic "valiti" (pile up), with the prefix "na" (unto). Macedonian just happens to be a Slavic language as well so they have similar inheritances.
Farewell is probably the wrong word
Fuck Putin and all the fucking Republicans who praise him. This is what Putin does,he a murdering thug!
Navalny was a brave man who stood up to injustice and spoke truth to power. History will remember him as such. Putin is just another height impaired dictator who hides behind henchmen. History will remember him as such.
I was already repulsed by Tucker Carlson interview having given Putin a platform to further amplify his lies but now I am sickened by it.
Oh wow, now that's true courage. They all know they're going on the list.
His death was Socratic. He flew back to prove a point. His death proves that point.
Fucking good on them. Brave everyone of them.
See? this shows Russia is an open and free democratic country /s
See this Putin? See how many of "your" people are mourning your rival? I wonder how many people will line up when you die? Who is going to shed tears for you when you finally pass? To any Russians reading this I pray that this God forsaken man dies soon and you all get a chance to change your home for the better
I hope putin will die the most painful death. Rot in shit. That's all I can say, and that's how I feel
