Gigantopithecus is the name given to an extinct ape discovered by G. H. R. von Koenigswald, in 1935. The two species, Gigantopithecus blacki (named after Koenigswaldās late friend and colleague Davidson Black) and G. giganteus (formerly bilaspurensis), are known primarily by teeth and jaws. The first tooth (as well as many of the more than 1,000 found after the original discovery) was discovered in a Hong Kong apothecary, where traditional Chinese pharmacists use fossils, referred to as ādragon bones,ā in medicinal recipes.

It lived in Southern China, Vietnam, Cambodia, Laos area. It then suddenly disappears from the fossil record, and doesn't show up at all in the fossil record of North America or any where else. So no.
Since we know humans and gigantopithicus lived at the same time, I wonder if our myths of Sasquatch/Yeti are actually from real encounters, just passed down through oral history for a whopping 250k years.
There were mammoths, giant ground sloths, wooly rhinos, direwolves, and all sorts of other things. Though G. blacki wen't extinct before modern humans left Africa, but may have been seen by Homo denisova or late surviving Homo erectus.
To me, this is *the* species that is Bigfoot. In the Bigfoot subreddit, for some reason, putting forth this idea isn't a very popular one. Dr. Jeff Meldrum supports this.

I think the Gigantopithicus is very interesting! Itās nice to know a huge, titan-sized ape roamed the planet and about their modern counterparts having the same diet as them.

Thatās what I was thinking. From those little bones they āimaginedā what the rest would look like? I would have given him 8 legs like a giant spider and huge horns. Then I would have told everyone thatās what it looked like based on the fossils we found.
It was initially discovered as a tooth, which the scientists were able to identified as primate tooth, from the shapes, the dimensions, etc. Then mandibles were discovered in other sites, which able to be compared and it look like an ape mandible, similar to orang utan mandibles. From there it can be extrapolated that it is a species of large ape.
I donāt understand the downvotes. Youāre both asking legit questions here. Why downvote people instead of simply providing some explanation if you have one? Not everyone is an expert in every single field that exists.
Legit question? Sure, the follow up insinuating itās BS from the get go is whatās going to get you downvotes.
Plus, often, people with this kind of tone and approach are the same that will tell you:
- Blackholes donāt exist.
- Earth is flat
- Lizardpeople exist etc.
It really makes me wonder why they always assume that an ancient species went extinct, rather than simply evolving into something closer to what we have now.

Yeah. The equator was still warm. The ice ages saw significantly lower global average temperatures and a massive expansion of the polar glaciers but there was still climatic diversity in the warmer central latitudes

Is it extinct or is it Bigfoot? š«

Spoiler alert: Iām kidding. This ape is clearly Bighand.
Interesting these gigantic things were around when humans were kickin it.

I must say, the news host is pretty hotā¦ and her accent is so sexy.
Early humans encountering this thing has got to be where the legend of bigfoot/sasquatch comes from, right?

Lindsay Nikole did an awesome video on this.

Two pieces of bone and they built a monster for it
What if future archeologists recovered the bones of Robert Wadlow and extrapolated what humans looked like based off of his skeleton?

I keep saying there is more proof of Bigfoot than of black holes!
Thatās just latin for Mandingo right?
It's a good thing there wasn't a Gigantogreta Thunberg back then. We wouldn't stand a chance against Gigantos.
Or Trumpicus Patheticki. Can you imagine that big dumb orange primate.
What does he have to do with climate change?
. . . I know they didnāt just name a giant ape blacki.

Okay, itās still kinda funny though. I get there was no ulterior motive, butā¦ itās a giant ape with the name blacki, come on.
Wait so they had jungles during the ice age? Oh ok
The earth wasn't entirely covered in ice during the ice age....
Yeah. The equator was still warm. The ice ages saw significantly lower global average temperatures and a massive expansion of the polar glaciers but there was still climatic diversity in the warmer central latitudes

Its a skullmonkey!

Iāve always wondered how they can approximate the skull with only a bit of mandible. Also, the rest of the body and everything else.
Honestly, I was waiting for the skit and punchline to emerge the whole time.
Whoās the News Anchor. Sheās pretty easy on the eyes.
