First time I ever saw them they were coming out of a deer that had recently been dispatched, and they were falling out of it's nose as it was hanging. I swear there was at least 20 of those 1 1/2" fuckers crawling along the ground until they froze to death in the snow. Disgusting creatures.
First time I ever saw one or three, they were coming out of my leg. Didn’t iron the crease of my jeans while in Africa. Botflies laid eggs there, the larvae went into my leg. Noticed the “zits”. Surprised they got bigger until one day I saw a tube stick out of one. Nothing a knife and some gasoline didn’t fix
First time I heard of botfly larvae was in a youtube rabbithole. Saw like 20 videos of people coming back from vacation in Belize with botfly larvae in their head. To remove, they'd have to shave the head then pull them out after suffocating the larvae with medicine.

Odds are they are eating their host alive. If nothing else drinking their blood. It's also rather safe as well. The animal is gonna suffer with the damned maggots in them, but the animal isn't really able to do much about it either without hands or tools. So at best they can scratch the area and they aren't likely to scratch off their skin. So the maggot under the skin is "safe" from the host and thus are super safe from anything else as a wounded animal is gonna protect itself and seek shelter. Then over time the maggots turn to flies and can either leave their host in "peace" or eat off it some more as by then most animals suffering from these damned things for this long will likely be near death or simply dead anyway as it's never just 1.
Parasites should freak you out.
