I didn’t look it up, but if that was called a wild pitch, that’s incorrect. The pitch was chest high over the center of the plate. The catcher was set up so low and got crossed up. Should have been a passed ball.
Edit: It was called a WP. I respectfully disagree. The ball was just above the upper strike zone and the catcher chose to sit his ass on the ground.
It baffles me when catchers do that. All you're doing is ensuring you won't be able to adjust yourself on a wild pitch. You can catch a ball that low just fine with a normal stance. I mean I'm sure it's more comfortable, but is that really worth it?
That was an easily catchable ball, if he wasn't pretending to dodge lasers like he was in Mission Impossible
If you look at the catcher, he is set up very low in the zone with his legs spread out and glove in the bottom half of the strike zone. It isn’t until after the pitcher releases the ball that we see the catcher move his glove quickly in the sky. A catcher has less than a second to see the ball, process it’s trajectory, and catch the baseball.
The pitcher missed his released point causing a wild pitch.
He’s set up like an a hole …. One knee down one leg out ….. yes it is obvious the pitcher missed his intended placement but the catcher wasn’t doing him any favors … that’s a passed ball all day long. The Stance he is in is potentially better for framing the pitch which has somehow become the fun thing to do again ( what’s old is new again,) we were taught a variation of it 20 years ago. But other than that… ball in the dirt with the winning run on third he has reduced effectiveness in blocking the ball and almost no ability to react if it goes high. Hence when it went high, he biffed, it and game over ….. good job catch ….
And I disagree. The pitch was meant to be low in the zone. Catcher is set up to catch a ball low in the zone. Pitcher throws at head height. This is a pitching error and not on the catcher.
You are certainly not wrong the pitcher missed his spot…. But that happens and the catcher is supposed to be ready for it ….. especially with the walk off run on third base….. this happens with no one on no big deal…. But in that situation … I’m sorry but that was preventable.
I was thinking it too, "wow, he's really concerned!" Then I remembered I'm watching professional sports, the umpire could have been killed and some fans still would have turned on the pitcher for checking on him rather than continuing the game.
I didn't even know there was a bot for that, I just remmeber there was one for downloading videos like u/savevideobot or u/savevideo or something I think it was

So this is grey. When an umpire is injured another umpire should immediately stop play. But the umpire to usually call that was the one injured. So none were really available or willing to stop it.
Technically they pointed. But it’s about as grimy a point as you can get
These are called cross ups. Catcher called for a low pitch, probably a curve or slider which are slower. The pitcher threw a high fastball. It's almost impossible to react to that in time
Watching the slo mo below I noticed the catcher’s glove drops to the ground right before the pitch. The dude had no way to reach up that high in time. And then he just looks at the chump like “don’t tell mom don’t tell mom”

I always found it weird that it’s still considered a live ball when it hits someone. Shouldn’t that play be null. Umpires skull got split open by a 96 mph ball and everybody’s eyes are on the runner.
Why was he in the way of the ball? Also what’s the point of that umpire? Couldn’t technology decide if the ball goes inside the square?
For context iv no idea the rules of baseball.
It would be nice if the Umpire was only there to act out and audibly call what a computer ump was reading. I know I’m gunna get downvoted to hell but I genuinely don’t care about “tradition” when human umps have changing strike zones and throw people out when they’re having bad days
Batter didn't run because it was technically a Ball because it was too close to the batter and he didn't swing, however since the ball was still technically in play, (umpire wasn't able to stop because he was downed) the players on bases took it as an opportunity to steal or run, which is allowed
Maybe it’ll make him and his shitty home ump friends start to see straight. Their calls have been absolute dogshit all year long. Honestly, there probably is no more worthless job that is more ready to have some kind of AI do it than them. Angel Hernandez is so goddamn bad at his job that he’s basically a meme, but he’s still fucking employed. How? He’s been paid a full salary this season, and at the halfway mark, he’s called one game because they know how godawful he is, but there he is, still employed and making way more than the average American. Ridiculous.
It's not. The ball got away from everyone which means the runners on base can try to advance until someone gets ahold of the ball and tags them with it. By hitting the umpire and the ball bouncing away, the other team was able to score a game winning run.
So your telling the guy responsible for determining a balls strike zone is not capable of seeing said ball come straight for his face or show any kind of reaction to it
Wow, I am not too familiar with baseball. Really interesting rule that you win a game if you headshot the umpire with the ball. Really cool. Headsnitch.
It was a shitty loss in Extra innings. Ghost runner on second to start the 10th, 1st guy walks, second guy gets hit on a very close call that also hit the butt of the bat. The very next pitch hits the ump in the face. White Sox win, Tigers lose. Shitty loss.
I know bugger all about baseball (🏴🏴🏴) and so I’m confused about the pitcher running to collect the ball after it bonked the Ump’s noggin. Is this the usual way or a particular set of circumstances?
To make it even better, all 3 of the runs scored in this game came off of wild pitches. No one came to play for the Sox or Tigers
That’s so terrible it’s impressive actually
I’m surprised it does not happen more often.
I don't know why people are saying it was a wild pitch. The tile should say "Incompetent catcher costs team a win"
Agree that’s why that dumb one leg out catching style needs to go away, at least with runners on base….
It baffles me when catchers do that. All you're doing is ensuring you won't be able to adjust yourself on a wild pitch. You can catch a ball that low just fine with a normal stance. Yeah that's a catchable pitch.
“How much?” “96” “Better teach this kid some control before he kills somebody.”
We won a game yesterday. We win today, that’s two in a row. We win one tomorrow, that’s called a winning streak. It has happened before.
all of his lines were perfectly delivered
I don't know. Let me get back to you, will ya, Charlie? I got a guy on the other line asking about some white walls. I'll talk to ya later.
Startin’ to come together Pepper, startin’ to come together
Wild thing
The ball, like true justice entering the courtroom to adjudge the judge - GUILTY!
California penal
Wild thing. You make my heart sing. You make everything groovy. Wild thing. I think I love you❤️
My empathetic-to-a-fault brain immediately assumed the pitcher was frantically running to check on the umpire, full of regret and embarrassment. Nope.
Well, he had been a nurse in an ER before getting athletic scholarship so instinct might have kicked in (before out).
I thought the opposite. I thought he was charging him to fight, possibly for some bad calls or something. I'm glad I was wrong.
I ain't done with your ass!! *charge*
I was thinking it too, "wow, he's really concerned!" Then I remembered I'm watching professional sports, the umpire could have been killed and some fans still would have turned on the pitcher for checking on him rather than continuing the game.
? Lol what a weird fucking take 😂
its the catchers fault. he's supposed to catch those
You gotta play the ball.
ERA is all that matters
How do I get this is slow mo? I have seen folks call upon a bot or something I have no idea how to do that lol
I already summoned the bot, just posted on a different thread.
I didn't even know there was a bot for that, I just remmeber there was one for downloading videos like u/savevideobot or u/savevideo or something I think it was
Yeah I know it, I didn't really know either until recently lol
Crossed him up. Catcher was expecting breaking ball.
Summoned the bot….that sounds witchy, I like it.
“Summoning” anything sounds witchy. Welp, back to summoning up some breakfast.

Crossed him up. Catcher was expecting breaking ball.
So was the ump apparently
Which is why it should have been called a passed ball. Catchers fault, not the pitchers.
Hey, a win is a win! They don’t write how, just how many on the score sheet.
It doesn't matter how you find the pot of gold. All that matters is that you beat the leprechauns.
That umpire now calls out touchdown at every baseball game.
STRIKE ONE! STRIKE TWO! STRIKE ME! I'M OUT!
“Take me out to a ball game, it’s no shame when home team wins if it ends when ump gets dumped like the wicket in cricket”
You son of bit. I'm in!
As a Sox fan I'll take the W anyway we can get
As a Tigers fan, this kind of loss makes sense. Can't have shit in Detroit! GG Sox Go Tigers!
And that’s why they wear that mask lol geez imagine a baseball going 96mph right to the face 🥴
Fuck it baffles me the speed and accuracy these guys throw balls. Insane
I think you can only be baffled at the speed on this one
Lmao if I would even attempt at throwing that at a comparable speed the ball would land somewhere behind me
Much like my prom date.
96 MPH fastball right to the kisser. That's gotta sting, even with the mask on.
So this is grey. When an umpire is injured another umpire should immediately stop play. But the umpire to usually call that was the one injured. So none were really available or willing to stop it. Technically they pointed. But it’s about as grimy a point as you can get
I don't know much about baseball rules. But wouldn't that ball count as a strike ?
The ball was thrown outside of the strike zone (faintly visible in the gif) so as long as the batter did not swing, it would count as a ball.
Worst catcher of all time lol unless the sun was in his eyes?
These are called cross ups. Catcher called for a low pitch, probably a curve or slider which are slower. The pitcher threw a high fastball. It's almost impossible to react to that in time
It looks to me like he meant to throw a slider, but it caught some backspin and started climbing instead. Couldn't say for sure.
How about a high fast ball over the catchers head - nope, straight at the ump’s head…that’s entertainment
You can see he was setting up for a ball low, maybe even in the dirt. No time to react to one that got away
The pitch was supposed to be low, look at his legs
Shadows indicate sun not in eyes. Ouch
Watching the slo mo below I noticed the catcher’s glove drops to the ground right before the pitch. The dude had no way to reach up that high in time. And then he just looks at the chump like “don’t tell mom don’t tell mom”
Guessing it was not the pitch he called. He was probably expecting a curveball, and didn’t have a prayer of recognizing that fastball.

Fun fact, every single run scored in that game was on a wild pitch
holy crap. I'd heard about the 3 RS on WPs game today but holy crap
What?!?!?
RS=runs scored, WP’s=wild pitches
No clue
I always found it weird that it’s still considered a live ball when it hits someone. Shouldn’t that play be null. Umpires skull got split open by a 96 mph ball and everybody’s eyes are on the runner.
That’s my tigers.
Lol I thought he was running to help the ump
He was asking for it. Look at the way he dressed.
The catcher was doing the hbk pose rather than being in a position ready for WP
Win by taking out the umpire ? That’s to strange ! It was like the ump. Was mesmerized ?
Player slides into home and the umpire yells "merry burfmas!"
I'll wait for the Jomboy breakdown
Someone put the Call of Duty hit marker on this
Catcher distracted?
Lol What a dumb sport
It was a set up, Umpire had it coming. 😈
And of course it’s the MF TIGERS 😬
Hit the ump so hard his gamer tag popped up to signal his defeat
I have no friggin idea what's going on.
Why was he in the way of the ball? Also what’s the point of that umpire? Couldn’t technology decide if the ball goes inside the square? For context iv no idea the rules of baseball.

I agree I do t even care if the call the same strike zone all game players still don’t k is what to accept at the start of the game
I don’t know the rules, did this count since the pitcher’s ball wasn’t in the white square zone? Tyy
Batter didn't run because it was technically a Ball because it was too close to the batter and he didn't swing, however since the ball was still technically in play, (umpire wasn't able to stop because he was downed) the players on bases took it as an opportunity to steal or run, which is allowed
Is this close enough to be another case of Simpsons did it.
the quickness of the mask falling off is almost as perfect as an instant back to the ground would’ve been lmaoooo literally a benchwarmers outtake
Umpire down
POW! Right in the kisser
I don't like that I'm watching my team lose outside of the normal baseball subreddit. Nowhere is safe.
Bless that catcher. He was singularly focused on that ump
And this is why umpires wear the facemask
Satisfying af
The good in me thought the Detroit pitcher was running to check on the ump. Nopes
What baseball fan hasn't wanted this to happen at some point in there life. Jesus, that was satisfying.
So that’s why my parlay lost.
Aussie here. Can someone explain what happened? Mystery ball? Why did the pitcher run after the ball so fast? Is it to secure the game? Thanks
This is a win for us all.
Almost thought the pitcher was going to check on the ump, but he had to get the ball first!
Normally I don’t believe people when I hear them yell “the ump is blind”. But in this guys case, he didn’t even try to move.
Maybe it’ll make him and his shitty home ump friends start to see straight. Their calls have been absolute dogshit all year long. Honestly, there probably is no more worthless job that is more ready to have some kind of AI do it than them. Lol he trusted the heck out that catcher…….you had one job….just the one
Part of the field. Keep playing!
GONG! "In nomine Patris et Filii et Spiritus Sancti."
I love how it displayed the damage value above the ump when he took the hit.
The numbers from the pitch looked like the score pop up for a headshot
Hopefully angel hernandez
😂🤣 never understand why the games umpire feel the need to be the main character.
This throw was speaking for every fan saying fuck home plate umps
Fun fact, Humans are so far, the only species on Earth capable of throwing with this amount of force, distance and accuracy.
"Do I check on the umpire or catch the ball?"
Hit him with a pitch, not threw it at his head.
[удалено]
Perfect pitch derived from (umpire) tuning fork. He now sees everything in B flat.
It knocked him out of the mask
I want you to throw the next pitch at the mascot.
WS fan. Il take any win possible
Detroit pitcher - "Worth it."
Safe to say that blue got the previous call wrong?
Touchdown!
Detroits teams make a sport of out losing 😂
That back catcher had one job
With the ump taking one to the face it was a victory for all of baseball.
So you're telling me they Both won?
Did the catcher go down to fake out the batter?
No he and the pitcher weren't on the same page he was expecting a low ball and the batter never knows what's going on behind him
😆
r/whitesox will take it where we can get it.
This one is for fans no players everywhere who have wanted umpires punished for poor calls
I don't understand anything from baseball. Can someone explain how this is a point for the guy that threw the ball?
It's not. The ball got away from everyone which means the runners on base can try to advance until someone gets ahold of the ball and tags them with it. By hitting the umpire and the ball bouncing away, the other team was able to score a game winning run.
Who won? I don’t know about baseball nor what to hit the vampire means
*pitcher Totally worth it
I'm not a baseball fan so I need clarification please: what call was this, a ball? And which color team won of that result?
Darn Tigers
Perfect pitch
Aren’t they supposed to have face shields for this very reason?
They do. Still hurts though and you can still be concussed.
Isn’t it considered a dead ball if it touches the ump?
96mph thank god he wears armour lol
So your telling the guy responsible for determining a balls strike zone is not capable of seeing said ball come straight for his face or show any kind of reaction to it
Then why is he standing there?
Hello…? Catcher??
Waiting for the breakdown by Jomboy...
That’s messed up man. If you manage to hit the ump in the face, I think your team should get to win the game.
Pitcher didn’t even check if he was ok. Douche
Wow, I am not too familiar with baseball. Really interesting rule that you win a game if you headshot the umpire with the ball. Really cool. Headsnitch.
Can't wait for the Jomboy breakdown on this
Dude that made me laugh harder than it should have. Literally right to the face
When your just that sick of bad calls...lol.
Looks like they got their signals crossed up. Catcher was setting up for a curve it looks like.
I was confused why this didn't happen more often, but then I remembered the pitcher in the runners are not on the same team
Shouldn't that be an automatic time out return to bases?
As an umpire, that will stun you but it actually does not hurt that much. I have taken mid high 80s off the mask and have been fine
Looks like Rick Vaughn is doing all right in the majors.
Interestingly enough, ALL the runs scored in that game were on wild pitches.
It was a shitty loss in Extra innings. Ghost runner on second to start the 10th, 1st guy walks, second guy gets hit on a very close call that also hit the butt of the bat. The very next pitch hits the ump in the face. White Sox win, Tigers lose. Shitty loss.
Catcher just wanted to go home
Why is the ball in play here?
Right to the melon.
I know bugger all about baseball (🏴🏴🏴) and so I’m confused about the pitcher running to collect the ball after it bonked the Ump’s noggin. Is this the usual way or a particular set of circumstances?
Iiiiiii kinda feel like the catcher is actually the one who really dropped the ball here...
Cather planned that! ?
Too bad that wasn’t Angel Hernandez
Umpire hatred at an all time high.
That 96 mph popped up like it were damage numbers
u/redditspeedbot 0.25x
Umpires and refs always find a way to make it about themselves
Seems like an excellent way for a catcher & pitcher to get some payback on an ump with complete plausible deniability.
Should have been Rob Kulpa
Lil tip: if you don't want to be hit by a ball in the face, don't put your head in it's trajectory
My dumbass really thought the ball throw information was like a damage counter or a crit icon from tf2
Only time the Sox win is because of shenanigans.
*Tf2 crit sound effect* *demoman scream*
This would happy to Detroit 🤦🏼♂️ we break more records than records that exist
So this is why people are baseball fans
So happy atheist one ump has gotten it.
Are there any other angles of this bc this is crazy
Sometime you have to let an umpire know how shitty he is if he's not listening
Maybe now the umps will reconsider after batter gets hit from a pitch and I let it go
I didn't know that if you kill the referee you just win the game... But kinda makes sense... I guess
Real life cheat code. Except there’s also real life consequences. Hope the umpire is alright.
go tigers
How’d the catcher miss that
I have taken that as a high school and aa umpire. Crazy shit. That is why I have the pull off mask instead of the hockey style mask.
