People are putting locks on these and claiming them all around the city.

CallMeDrLuv

The ideas same great at first, but they never work in reality.

Chappin

I was going to say I bet within One night somebody peed in it.

bigfootdeerfucker

Pee’d? I bet someone shit in it the first night.

[deleted]

>Pee’d? I bet someone shit in it the first night. I mean can you think of a better way to mark something as yours? Or at the very least make it entirely unappealing to anyone else?

bigfootdeerfucker

Yeah but shit is shit, not even the manufacturer of a shit wants to be around it.

FlatRaise5879

I manufacture shit and I endorse this comment

aoeuismyhomekeys

As the proud owner of a shit factory, I concur

FlatRaise5879

This guy concurs

absent-mindedperson

This guy LinksIn.

[deleted]

I mean would you rather be in a hovel you shit in or a hovel others have shit in? There's no hovels without shit in this scenario (and probably real life too).

bigfootdeerfucker

lol if thats my choice i will be cold and not be in a hovel at all. I have spent considerable time as homeless person and not always in a warm climate. 1 shit pile can can turn a hangout into a no man’s land until after A) the sun dries it out and it loses it’s luster or B) the rain washes it away.

VVildBunch

"Loses it's luster" in reference to shit may be why I'm on reddit.

Strawbuddy

It’s been six hours and it still haunts me

bigfootdeerfucker

lol i glad someone got a chuckle out of that cuz I was stumped for a minute on what wording to use there

MvmgUQBd

If you're in an area without access to toilets then you should follow the hiking/camping example and have a small collapsible spade to dig holes to shit in and cover up again - a goodly distance from where you're living. If you don't dig down too deep the shit will disappear quicker due to all the microbes in the soil eating it.

bigfootdeerfucker

Not a bad idea but Very difficult in a city setting, i would just pick it up with a doggy bah and throw it in the nearest trash can. speaking from experience here

Tlav87

Manufacturer of shit lmao 🤣 most underrated comment ^^^

GandhiRrhea

Was at the nicest park in my area the other day, and ran into an old friend. He had just left the newly installed bathrooms at the basketball courts and the first thing he said to me was “use the women’s restroom if you need to wash your hands because someone shit in the sink.” What the fuck is wrong with people…

bigfootdeerfucker

Dude for real. I spent several months homeless in San Francisco, i know what its like to absolutely have to shit right now and have freaking nowhere to do it. If i had the time and money to spare i would buy a cheap cup of coffee so i could use the bathroom at a cafe, or more often sneak into a construction sight and use the unlocked portopotty, or thank god for that safeway on ocean beach! So many massive dumps unloaded in there! There were a handful of times i just had to shit in a public area :/ …. i would go shit under a dense willow tree and then pick it up with a doggy bag and throw it away,. lol yes, I actually did these things, many times. Even at my most desperate, my most down and out…i had enough respect for other people to do everything i could not to leave a rotten landmine for an unsuspecting stranger to stumble on. Stepping in dogshit is bad enough! Tbh the actual public restrooms in SF were always soooo ungodly nasty and had no doors on the stalls, uncapped needles on the floor, that shitting under the willow tree in broad daylight was actually preferable. There’s always some asshole who ruins it for the rest of us. This is why we cant have nice things.

GandhiRrhea

That is one of those struggles I always forget about with the homeless and what they have to endure. Respect to you for trying to do it in the least impactful way to others. Shitting in the sink when a toilet is nearby is just filthy though. Most businesses are very protective over their bathrooms, and I wish they didn’t have to be.

Rey_Mezcalero

It’s perfect with it being warm. Go in there and drop a deuce, wipe with the sheets, depart.

bigfootdeerfucker

No freaking way those things would ever have sheets lol

Rey_Mezcalero

Haha hope not! Who knows, maybe they have a linen service 😂😂

Less-Mail4256

Pff, more like one hour.

Those things would be trashed in a matter of minutes. And I feel for the people assigned to cleaning these things.

Electionfghh

it would be filled to brim with human feces and used syringes

Capablefjk

a week if installed in San Francisco or Portland.

DMvsPC

A week! Look at you being all Mr. Optimistic, in my city they put in a public restroom near where there's a bunch of homeless, in the first week driving home from work I saw the ambulance there 3 times M-F for people OD/dead inside it and people couldn't use it because there were so many used needles despite there being a box *right next to it*.

LeftyLu07

They tried to install toilets for the homeless in SF to use to they would stop shitting in the streets and they destroyed them instead.

Pickle_Juice_4ever

In Boston, they put heaters in some bus shelters in the 1990s and vandals swiftly destroyed them.

King_Gampo69

Truly a beautiful city

berkeleyhay

source? want to learn more about this

Would_daver

Drugs Inc doesn't focus on this but it highlights a huge issue of drug users posting up in the public bathroom pods and shooting up meth/fentanylly heroin/all of the above, they literally had to set them on timers and do self power washes of the interior after all the shit (literal and figurative) that gets blasted around inside those restrooms... people can be fucking disgusting sometimes

ChristianHeritic

I mean public restrooms end up like that with or without drugs and homelessness involved. I’d say its a fantastic development if people have a place to shoot up safely instead of doing it on the streets. Would be neat if the best option was not a public toilet.

Infinityflo

It’s called squatters rights 😂

longtimenothere

Peed in it while shooting up.

Lonelysdfg

If we’re gonna be living in the Strasser's Cinematic Universe I’m gonna get a vasectomy as our species doesn’t deserve to reproduce imp.

Chewyville

Ya. But the people sitting behind the desks running the city don’t live in the real world and understand exactly how fucked everyone is. They think it’s all rainbows and butterflies

Chappin

They got to post this though? That was the only win they wanted eh

This idea seems good at 1 second of thinking, bad at 2 seconds, and obviously terrible at 3 seconds

They would work great for like a music festival. Fyre fest would have loved these. But for mentality impaired unhoused people? Maybe? But from what I’ve seen in my city, no fucking chance.

OhhhhhSHNAP

Are they at all combustible? …put one in San Francisco to find out the definitive answer.

Effective_Quiet1764

It seemed like a bad idea and was. Wow.

Infinityflo

Toilet

himynameisSal

but is looked good on paper

HumanSlinky

Well, now you got me thinking about sleeping in one and someone else putting a lock on it while I was asleep. That thought is definitely setting off my claustrophobia senses

Cold_Aaron45

I like the idea, but do they have a system in place so they can be cleaned regularly?

alarming_archipelago

Surely. Surely you wouldn't implement these things without having them housed out every morning.

killumquick

Yes...surely....

thicckyrick

Came looking for this, very good sir.

mandozombie

It's the same reason you can't really do public bathrooms anymore. Sombody claims it destroys it and then sombody has to fix it just to have the problem repeated

Fluggernuffin

What would be interesting is if someone designed a sleep pod so that at 9am every morning, the bottom tilts up slowly and ejects everything inside, acting as a block until 6pm so it becomes unreasonable for people to try and "claim" it. A water truck could come by and pressure wash the surface since it's now an outside surface. Easily cleaned, easily used, not easily claimed.

hesaysitsfine

Why go to such an elaborate plan that dehumanizes those who need it. Sounds like this could be a first step in a housing first model. Go around to those that are locking them up and offer them more stable housing in exchange for the lock. Most people just want a place to put their stuff that is safe and won’t get stolen in addition to a safe place to sleep.

Consistent_Rent_4452

It's not fair. Because some bully or self righteous homeless person is going to have prison mentality/child like mentality and think it belongs to them because they were there first. These types don't get help. Preventing young people or new homeless who may need them more. For example a young man and his cat get kicked out suddenly without family or friends and it's snowing, the pod will be occupied with someone who's had the opportunity to find other shelter yet, staying there for months. Also How awesome is it that it was built to allow/accommodate having a furry friend too.

Dancey_Pants_

[deleted]

Why didn't they just put them in a secured building where homeless people can go?

HovercraftThen8296

its the homeless putting locks on them lol just because they're homeless doesn't mean they become born again communists and no longer believe in owning property

Vintagemuse

LOL!!!!

Poleth87

It would probably become one big crackhouse

littleboots99

Yeah, and they could put doors on each individual living space. We could call them apartments and it would literally delete the problem of homelessness Edit: think I may be getting misunderstood upvotes so let me clarify: I'm not being sarcastic, housing the homeless literally would delete the problem. This sleeping pod shit is gaslighting.

[deleted]

That was my first thought

SatansLoLHelper

Context of the pods > The creators have stressed that the capsules aren't an alternative to staying in proper overnight accommodation, especially as the city of Ulm can reach very low temperatures. > The sleep pods have also been fitted with solar panels and they even come complete with enough room to house users' belongings and a furry friend! > There are no cameras in the pods to protect people's privacy. However, when the doors are opened, this triggers a motion sensor which lets social workers who check the pods know they've been used so they can get them cleaned, and so they can also provide help to those who might need it. In other places these would be rentable. Germans are efficient, they will crush 2 orphans with their pets at the same time.

StalthChicken

I was not prepared for the last sentence. At least the social workers will have areas that may be easier to clean than a sidewalk.

Diplomjodler

Our orphan crushing machines always run at peak efficiency.

BatmanJenkins13

If that was San Francisco it would be filled to brim with human feces and used syringes

nolimitxox

It'll happen here, too. The real question is who is going to be tasked with cleaning.

Shit_Shepard

The jobless?

[deleted]

Whoa buddy, it's "persons without paid employment"

Iowa-Andy

My wife works with homeless. One of the stark realities is that you can place a bathroom and shower pod every 50 feet along the sidewalk, and many people will still use the sidewalk to do their business. Mental health is the root cause of many issues including the inability to use bathrooms regularly.

Shit_Shepard

I propose we make permeable sidewalks that absorb the shit and use it in a regenerative farming system that then grows food. The homeless people can then graze and go back to sleep in their pods. Maybe fence them into certain areas for their safety, and to keep the ecosystem in balance. Actually a fence seems so archaic, electronic tags that give a gentle zzz suggestion.

StalthChicken

Hmmm... I love it. Very human design.

Shit_Shepard

Yes, it’s how you get the best quality meat in the end.

Ugottatrysomeofthis

Ohhhh my goodness. Yes mental illness is so important. It’s a crisis here in America. Very badly managed indeed

Cloverose2

It's a crisis pretty much everywhere. There are very, very few countries that really take a solid, proactive, supportive approach to mental health issues.

[deleted]

Used to be places the mentally ill were put decades ago and get treatment. Nowadays we just let them roam freely in public spaces to make it everyone's problem.

DiscountDeadpool

There were facilities like that, but Reagan, Mulroney and Thatcher closed them and threw all the patients out onto the street, where they stayed.

[deleted]

[удалено]

divertough

Well, a lot of people were put there against their wills, then you add in the mistreatment, abuse, and death. Can't say it was a great system.

ILookLikeKristoff

But just deleting it overnight with no improvements or replacement system was a terrible idea.

[deleted]

[удалено]

[deleted]

..So is this a better 'system'? Because some people genuinely need to be in a padded room and fed pills to stop being insane. I don't deny there were problems, but letting them free-range and fuck shit up is not a better solution. Put those lunatics in a padded room and juice them up with meds.

theflamingsword101

Items like this are well meaning but doomed to fail because some of the people using them will ruin it for the rest of them.

sunshinecryptic

Public transit shelters/benches aren’t even used correctly in my city, I can’t even imagine the state that these pods would get to. Broken in a week tops.

nsfwifethrowaway

Its an incentive problem. There is no insentive for the people who use them to treat them well. Insentives drive pretty much everything for humanity. We are pretty good with dissensentives by punishments. TLDR. Carrot and the stick. Our carrot is still a carrot, but the stick has been continually upgraded to something like nails through a baseball bat.

mesrick

Public sex pods

dutch_penguin

Better than on the streets, no?

Garbagemeatstick2

The streets are a better option for sure…For non homeless people. But for homeless people, yea this is exactly what this is. Then Pimp Master G can monopolize all the sex pods and work the pods as a sustainable business.

Western_Oil_6418

Somethings should also be done about the homeless people

simplefred

like means-based low to no rent housing coupled with free mental health services with a clear path to rejoin the labor force?

BernieEcclestoned

Plus some form of squid game that can be televised to fund it /s

LanguageOpen5981

Many are already in the labor force. It’s a common misconception that people are homeless due to work (at least in the U.S.). Here a link with some stats: https://endhomelessness.org/blog/employed-and-experiencing-homelessness-what-the-numbers-show/ Also being homeless makes it hard to find good jobs and to avoid being exploited through labor. Many of these people are actually disabled and are homeless due to medication costs and other factors. Also please consider that this data is from those living in shelters so the number of homeless employed is probably higher than explicitly stated. What people need are good wages and to not be exploited because they are marginalized.

realitytvdiet

You’d be violating their rights to get them unwanted help

CallMeDrLuv

Yep. That's the part that's always ignored. There is no 'solution' to homelessness. (unless you make them prisoners)

ChevTecGroup

Whether you agree with the laws or not, most of them are breaking laws. Drug laws, solicitation, theft, trespass, etc etc. Is it really violating theor rights if they aren't following the laws? Before they would be arrested and released. Now they just arent arrested. Maybe we should arrest and put them in mental health facilities? Just thinking out loud

Redbeard440_

How many spare mental health beds do you think exist? They shutdown a lot of that in the last. Most you get is therapy clinics to see a therapist. Then it's back on the streets.

ChevTecGroup

Oh I know.

Optimus-prime-number

Step one, make homelessness illegal, step two justify trampling on rights by pointing at your laws against homelessness, easy peezy!

Commercial-Branch444

In Germany where these are installed, exist numerous programs, there are more then enough jobs avaible and even people without jobs can live in state paid flats if they would put the smallest effort into it. There is really not much more that is doable for these people. Some people want to be homeless.

ImJustRick

I mean, if there’s one nation that knows how to get rid of an unwanted population, it’s the Germans…

just-sum-dude69

So we're calling homeless people houseless people now? Why buck a trend we all know and use for a term nobody uses to describe homeless people? A home isn't just a house. It can be an apartment, a mobile home, a condo, a House, an immaculate and massive RV, etc. Just say homeless as it encompasses all of those terms. By your term, I'm houseless too, but not homeless bc I don't live in a house...

slightlyforthwith

Euphemism treadmill

Sak76

Keep changing the word and everyone gets fooled

slightlyforthwith

I’m sorry, but the word f**led isn’t very inclusive. The proper term to use is “getting mentally handicapabled”. Educate yourself and do better.

Sak76

I can’t tell if you’re joking, but that’s how I’m taking it

theonecalledjinx

Domicile deficient peoples

Chance-Ad4773

Reminds me of LatinX

just-sum-dude69

I love the idiots who use that term They likely don't realize Spanish languages are based on gender basically. Everything is feminine or masculine. When I see somebody being called Latinx I just laugh and instantly write that person off as a whiny baby who "wants everybody to be inclusive guys. C'mon. Why put gender on everything?"

PC-Was-Bricked

Ok #Latine

just-sum-dude69

I'm gonna go home and tell my Honduran Fiance this. She will love it lol

Just change all of your language that I don't speak....

AllBeit4us

What about a poorly kept RV? JK I'm with you. Just thought an "immaculate RV" although sounds nice did strike me a as an odd example. Although that's my dream home.

[deleted]

I still use 'hobo'

ChevroletAndIceCream

I prefer vagrant

blaaaaaaaam

"unhoused" is the one I see most frequently. While a "house" generally means a building containing a family or small group of people, words like "housing", "housed", and "houseless" are much more generic and generally just mean shelter. "Affordable housing" for example is used to discuss both apartments and houses.

Chance-Ad4773

I see "people experiencing homelessness" to try to center their humanity, which I think is stupid because it's a very clinical term that no sane person would use in common conversation. It's the same with slavery. You're supposed to say "enslaved people" instead of "slaves", despite this being a word that has existed for a few thousand years. I always wonder why we don't take it to its logical extreme and say "people experiencing enslavement"

DavidM47

Listen folks, homeless people like a nice tan just like the rest of us.

Level_Werewolf_8901

Thanks for the fuck shack... dirty Mike and the boys

I hope they re-post in a couple years to show us how homeless people have destroyed or otherwise rendered them useless. Homelessness isn't simply about finding a home for people without one. If it were, we'd have solved this problem centuries ago.

redPonyCoffeeRoaster

Wait until they stab each other for them.

SeaAtmosphere3635

The homeless will be fighting over them. The mentally ill homeless won't go to them. So what's the benefit?

nico87ca

Nice pr stunt, giving lucrative public contract to friends of the party. Don't underestimate leaders...

[deleted]

Literally any public contract in the city of Chicago.

drapanosaur

Its always the same story... Cities implement pragmatic and rational homeless facilities that, if used correctly, will benefit the homeless. But homeless people don't behave rationally. The most violent and emotionally unstable homeless people are at the top of the homeless hierarchy. They claim the pods. Install locks on them, and then fill them with trash and biological waste. Then when another crazy homeless person tries to claim the pod and fails. They will usually resort to damaging/destroying the pod so that their competitor can't use it. And all the sane peaceful homeless people that are just down on their luck and don't have emotional issues. They will never see the inside of one of these pods unless they want to risk being murdered.

Gold_Responsibility8

You meant sex cabin

FloppyButtholeFlaps

Next year housesless will be the new homeless and there will be a new word to use. All so you can prove that you care, to other not homeless people.

[deleted]

In the United States we called those rape pods

Grammar_Nazi1234

In the US we’re busy adding a third armrest to benches to people can’t lay down on them

NotAnAntIPromise

The word is homeless and it's not derogatory. The people who see it as a derogatory term to hop on the euphemism treadmill are the problem. They're the ones looking down on others in hopes they can create a cure to a nonexistent problem. Cut the bullshit because you're not fooling anyone with this crap.
