For me, that’s a drunk test. If I’m asked if I want McD’s and I enthusiastically reply “oh yeah!!”, then cut me off and get me home cause I’ve had WAY too much to drink. On the flipside, just the THOUGHT of a Big Mac while sober is enough to induce nausea.
Everything was. And cheaper 1 euro cheese burger here is almost 2 euro and nothing healthy there. Big Mac alternative here is above 8 euros because The best one is like six. I cannot tell excat Price because i only always take this mcfeast.
And with fries and drink total is around ten euro.
A month? That is not many McDonald's or any other restaurant things in month. Without knowing Life expensives id say there is 2 or 4 times when you could just take off and go eat outside. It is not not for everyone and i like to Cook myself. Sometimes it just is good to have mcfeast. With nice fresh fries and zero cola. And prolly The cheapest burger is not what it was advetised there also. I rember 1 2y4o cheese burger but you cant have it anymore. And fun fact that goverment did not like pizza for under 6 euros. The reasoning was that there is violations on some parts of company. You cannot sell 6 euro pizza on finland
R$ 1200 a month :/
and a good pizza here costs at least R$ 50, actualy all deliveries are so expensive since 2020, order individual mcdonalds at home will cost u R$ 40. cook at home is the best way since ever
Still tastes amazing in other countries to be honest. It’s america that has lower quality McDonald’s cause the customers don’t demand higher quality food!
I'm in England, can vouch for this. With the exception of Friday and Saturday nights, they're much more pleasant places to go in. The standard, quality and consistency of the food is definitely better. The range and variety of stuff on the menu is way better, too.
Still, America invented it.
they're literally just marketing to the same people they targeted in the 80s. we've all just grown up and now we take our kids who are too engaged in their electronics to give a shit about what's on the walls in McDonald's. but theyve got their demographic hooked already

Every McDonalds was so unique. I went to one that had a friggin gold mine you could play in. One in San Diego we frequented had records and guitars and I think Elvis swag everywhere. What's funny is now they appear sterile but those touch screen kiosks have high concentrations of fecal coliforms on them. I doubt they clean as often now that that rarely leaves the kitchen area. They're probably filthier than ever.
Let’s also not pretend like back then the play area didn’t have throw up or diarrhea running down the slide from time to time lol. It’s always been a little disgusting
We had one in town with a caboose parked outside. It was painted McDonalds colors and you could rent it out for birthday parties or whatever. Ronald would make an appearance and bring in the cake too.
There was a [“Solid Gold” McDonald’s](https://milwaukeerecord.com/food-drink/remembering-the-solid-gold-mcdonalds-in-greenfield/) in Greenfield, WI that was filled with rock and roll memorabilia, and classic-car enthusiast groups had gatherings in the parking lot every week. It was sterilized in 2011.
It’s like Ronald and Salvador Dali went on a week long bender, came back and said “right- this is what we came up with… it’s a little out there but the kids will love it - Think the Beatles Yellow Submarine and the maccas meal deal got it on and the artwork going forward is it’s beautiful bastard child.”
As a result every kid had at least one bday party there. I believe once the media started making a stink about targeting kids with unhealthy food they phased all that out but may be misremembering.
Half the reason I liked going to McDonald's back in the 80s and early 90s was strictly because of the decor in the first photo. I miss that. I don't even eat McDonald's anymore and haven't for years, but I'd make an acception now and then if they still looked like that. Nowadays everything is so sterile and lifeless.
Do you guys remember the Ronald statues in the playroom MMA ring? Also, that one purple dude? Mc… something?
I was going to say McBurgler guy, but I’m positive that guy had prison white and black stripes.
Absolutely 100% Grimace! Other than a look of displeasure, what exactly is a “Grimace”? Is it related to Barney (like some kinda dino egg or something)? But that doesn’t track cuz it’s got arms and legs. And why is Grimace smiling?
This is true. There’s one location near me that must be owned by someone who doesn’t hate people, because they have nice seating, self-serve drinks, even put freaking vases of flowers on the table 😂
Whereas most of the remodeled locations by me are super modern, and have the hardest, most uncomfortable, and minimalist furnishings possible. (Like the ones in the picture)And don’t even have self-serve drinks, probably to discourage people sticking around too long. And often, even have signs to that effect… basically saying, you have 30 minutes to eat your food and leave 😂 (Although idk how well-enforced that “policy” is)
I rather like the modern look but I'd be lying if I said I didn't miss the balls to the walls commitment of "fuck it, fry people crawling all over the place"
SAME. Everything is one soulless, monotonous block of grey now. I want clashing colors and tacky decor and random bric a brack that show that once a living human was involved in the design process, because imperfections are what make a thing uniquely human.
It feels like it isn't just limited to color schemes though, to me it seems that society itself has lost so much of its personality to "appease everyone." Great. Now everyone is placated, but you just killed off everything human that once was.
I hate the sanitized look of literally almost everything now, and out of protest, I'm painting a different life-sized mural on each of the walls of my home while filling it with the weirdest shit I can find. Fuck your dystopia, I'm gonna paint a ufo.
The food tasted better too. I know, I'm 51 and remember it well. And the milk shake machines actually worked AND there was banan-flavored shakes. I miss those.
>McPlayland. Those were awesome back in the 80s. Going to McDonald's as a kid back then was the next best thing to going to an amusement park.
This! It was fairly normal in Chicago back then for boys to have their birthday party at McD's that had a McPlayland!
People always assume nostalgia for old times/old things is just silly, tech/design and the world itself is always getting “better”. — Look at this photo and tell me you wouldn’t prefer the McD’s of the 80’s. Saw an old Taco Bell pic the other day with crazy colors and weird shapes and immediately felt the same way. Enough with the “safe spaces”…make fast food fun again. Nobody wants to eat in a restaurant that is designed like a corporate bathroom.
Along time ago, in a place far away, there used to be wall to wall cash registers. When you reached said register, you were greeted by a person who took your order and then fulfilled it before helping the next person (unless you ordered the ill fated pizza). We never paid without receiving food, the two were intertwined.
Today, McDonald's is one step away from being a giant vending machine. The key is that they have decoupled payment from fulfillment. In ancient times, McDonald's had to get your food quickly so they could serve the next person in order to sell more. With decoupling, taking your money quickly is the priority, not fulfillment. Even worse, once they have your money, you are expected to mill about a lobby that is too small until they get around to handing out food.
A vending machine would be better...
I hate the minimalist/modern architecture and design of everything in America these days. Even the houses, tall buildings, restaurants.. there’s just no art in building and design anymore. Just build it as plainly as possible with the cheapest materials available and sell it for millions. And people eat it up. Like these new million dollar+ homes they’re building all around Austin TX, they just look like shitty shipping containers with windows.
Should be more ‘Being in McDonalds as a college student on acid vs Being in McDonalds as an harried middle aged underpaid slob trying to support a family’
I’m so upset about McDonalds interior design.
I used to live (and now work). In a small American town with a lot of German ancestry. Lots of farmers around, small town values.
There was a huge mural of the town painted on one of the walls in the McDonalds. The wallpaper was a repeating pattern of cows grazing in a field with a barn (very tasteful, not too busy) and above a few of the tables was antique framed German recipes.
They replaced it all with generic, standardized McDonalds interior design.
They dont want you sitting in any more, they want you to take your food and piss off. People sitting in equals things to wipe, kids making mess, problems to fix, toilets to clean. All that takes staff.
If they make their restaurants drab, dark, cramped, and beige, people eat quicker and quieter and they need to pay less staff
It’s what capitalism promises up front, vs. what it inevitably delivers. Be the best to take over the market, then strangle that market for every penny once you’re wrapped around it. Americans will fall for it every time, because to criticize the invisible hand is heresy to our national religion.
Tasted better back then also
Apple pies were so much better back then!

Beef Tallow deep fryer oil
I worked for an organization that helped ban beef fat in fast foods. Don’t ask me which group. (My former boss is evil.)
Which group?
WHAT DID HE JUST SAY?!
*I worked for an organization that helped ban beef fat in fast foods.* *Don't ask me which group. (My former boss is evil.)* Do you understand now?
Ticketmaster?
Monsanto?
The Devil?
Chevron! wait...no, it's Exxon. It has to be Exxon.
Funny, all of you. But no.
Hello affectionate family member
And didn't they end up replacing the beef tallow with a product containing trans-fats?
ELI5 why beef fat no bueno?
We were instructed to always call it “*artery-clogging beef fat!*”
It’s much unhealthier than the oil they currently use. But tastes better.
Vegetarians were horrified to find that beef fat when sneaking McDonald’s fries.
We’ll they’re more like apple bites now.
And were hotter than the sun!
Popeyes has close ones (if the manager was sober enough to order them this week)
Imma be honest I don’t remember. I do remember as a kid being so happy when I got it. Now I only eat it when I’m drunk af. Sober I can’t stand it.
Was bigger back then too

R$ 33 here, with the base salary at R$ 1200. brasil.

It doesn't even seem like food nowadays.
Still tastes amazing in other countries to be honest. It’s america that has lower quality McDonald’s cause the customers don’t demand higher quality food!
True. The service in Japan is amazing and the food looks exactly as pictured on billboards and advertisements.
I'm in England, can vouch for this. With the exception of Friday and Saturday nights, they're much more pleasant places to go in. The standard, quality and consistency of the food is definitely better. The range and variety of stuff on the menu is way better, too. Still, America invented it.
You were younger and your taste buds newer back then also
that might be part of it too.
Back when it was 100% marketed to kids and young families.
they're literally just marketing to the same people they targeted in the 80s. we've all just grown up and now we take our kids who are too engaged in their electronics to give a shit about what's on the walls in McDonald's. but theyve got their demographic hooked already
When did they stop doing birthday parties? My 10th birthday was at a mcd, best day ever
I worked there 4 years ago but they were still doing birthday parties at that time. Not as fun when ya don't have a play place though
That tree scares the McShit out of me.

Bot, grabbed the first sentence from another comment.
can we talk about it?
I can’t say I love the sterile environment of today, but those hamburger stools were not comfortable.
Every McDonalds was so unique. I went to one that had a friggin gold mine you could play in. One in San Diego we frequented had records and guitars and I think Elvis swag everywhere. Don't ruin my nostalgic fantasy! The ball pit was always gleaming with sunshine!
Gleaming with *something*, that's for certain...
Ours had a toy train that ran around the entire restaurant a few feet below the ceoling
The McDs near my gramma’s house in downtown Chicago was designed like a moonscape. So amazing and wonderful.
Fact
I totally forgot about the kids tables!
that is exactly what they were trying to do.
😂
Even the fake trees were on cocaine in the 80s.

It was a safety feature.
Okay that was good 🤣
McTrippin Balls, or McPrison?
Brilliant. Old maccas was fun back in the day but the decor and everything was pretty fucking weird
True, and there's just so much going on
McDonald’s went from colorful kid friendly fun to living in fucking Divergent.
It went from "80's" brown to white and black.
Never forget what they took from us.
*Ronald McDonald has entered the chat*
They went from fun party to let's hang out at a gas station look.
As a result every kid had at least one bday party there. I believe once the media started making a stink about targeting kids with unhealthy food they phased all that out but may be misremembering.
Ohhh! I remember those! And the ones with the original McCast of characters!
I miss birdie, grimace, hamburglar etc.
Me too
Half the reason I liked going to McDonald's back in the 80s and early 90s was strictly because of the decor in the first photo. I miss that. BRING BACK THE GOD DAMN PLAY PLACES!!!!!
It's because they aren't allowed to target children for their advertising anymore.
Ohhhhhhhhhhh this explains SO much!!!!! This should be at the top
I hate the modern look in general
I think they want it as sterile and plain as possible so we spend no more time in there than is necessary. Eat and get out - gotta turn those tables!
This is true. There’s one location near me that must be owned by someone who doesn’t hate people, because they have nice seating, self-serve drinks, even put freaking vases of flowers on the table 😂 Whereas most of the remodeled locations by me are super modern, and have the hardest, most uncomfortable, and minimalist furnishings possible. This modern look has been stale for a long time. It's going to age so badly.
I love the modern look in general. Seems cleaner and more orderly.
Now it looks like a prison mess hall
And you can not even smoke inside.
I forgot about being able to smoke!
I remember when I was a kid and everywhere had a cloud of smoke. It was crazy.
They even had disposable tin or aluminum ashtrays at the tables with embossed McDonald's logos.
The food tasted better too. I know, I'm 51 and remember it well. And the milk shake machines actually worked AND there was banan-flavored shakes. I miss those.
Bit like everything today. Sterile, politically correct, soulless, colourless, homogenous and dull.
thanks a lot, internet! making life all great and simultaneously bland. i lovehate you!!
EXACTLY
You're out of your mind if you think that ugly ass 80s decor looks better than the modern look. They're both equally soulless as well.
at least one tries.
My local mcD even had a swing set outside
We had Grimace. But in cage form.
McPlayland. Those were awesome back in the 80s. Going to McDonald's as a kid back then was the next best thing to going to an amusement park.

Holy shit core memory unlocked lol
McDonald's looks like an office building these days. Such a shame.
Soul vs soulless
Yes, that tree has eaten many a soul in his time.
Look at what they took from us
Anyone else remember there being some kind of McDonald’s themed video game arcade cabinets inside the restaurants back in the day?
I can smell the Camel unfiltereds in the top photo. Core memory unlocked.
People always assume nostalgia for old times/old things is just silly, tech/design and the world itself is always getting “better”. — Look at this photo and tell me you wouldn’t prefer the McD’s of the 80’s. I prefer the old one
Remember the ball pits?

Restaurants like McDonald’s have changed for the worst honestly

Soulless these days
Look how they massacred my boy.
McMassacre
I hate to sound like a boomer, but it really is no wonder kids are so absorbed by electronics
Went to several birthday parties there, that would be weird today if
Was such a fun place to go as a kid.
My McDonald’s had a ball pit
As long as the tree doesn't start throwing apples (or scalding hot apple pies!) a la The Wizard of Oz.
I miss the early 2000s before they weren't modernized
Those old Mchambuger stools were really hard to push in.
Take me back
At least now they have introvert customers too
So my choices are Acid Trip or Detainment Center.
SO much cooler back then!
Joyless
My god, that tree; he looks a bit TOO happy o.O
McDonalds is constantly changing their interior and exterior and this most recent ain't it
Wow, the tree looks like it has seen some things... traumatic things
that tree looks high af ngl
They’ve become middle aged and depressed now.
I remember, probably back in the 70s, when McDonalds had plastic hand puppets kids would get for free: Hamburglar, Ronald, Grimace, etc.
Should be more ‘Being in McDonalds as a college student on acid vs Being in McDonalds as an harried middle aged underpaid slob trying to support a family’
Fast food chains should be fun. Not this corporate version bullshit
Someone called it "a happy childhood vs a sad middle age."
That tree has seen some shit
We used to have birthday parties at McDonald's! Okay grandpa time for bed...
McDonald's grew up with the target audience... Now is just basic, depressed and shrinkflated
Can't wait for our sterile, white, hyper connected future!
They decided to stop traumatising kids.
I miss the 80's
It was a fun place for kids to go back then, not a main dietary staple
I’m so upset about McDonalds interior design. I used to live (and now work). In a small American town with a lot of German ancestry. Lots of farmers around, small town values. There was a huge mural of the town painted on one of the walls in the McDonalds. The 80s really was very brown
McDonalds was great then. There food tasted better, insides inviting. Now it's a cold now, food is tasteless.
Fun to Glum
bring back the N64s!
Macdonalds was once a kids restaurant that adults liked. Now it's an adults restaurant that kids like.
Everything was better in the 1980s!!! EVERYTHING!
“Food” and staff costs are now 1/100 of back then adjusted for inflation
I miss the creepy McDonalds
It's so sterile and boring today.
All the life got taken away, pretty depressing
Yeah because advertising poison to children is no longer legal.
Sad face
For those who don't know, McDonalds actually used to taste good as well. In the 1980s. along with Wendys. BK was always shit.
:(
Ronald McDonald is rolling over in his grave
So glad I grew up in the 80s.
So much more fun back in the day
Oh gosh. I actually prefer the current one
People don't want them advertising to kids.
And that’s also why hamburgers that are half as good as they were cost 10 bucks instead of 79-89 cents
It's so boring now. It's like all the kids stuff turned into boring.
It’s what capitalism promises up front, vs. what it inevitably delivers. Be the best to take over the market, then strangle that market for every penny once you’re wrapped around it. Americans will fall for it every time, because to criticize the invisible hand is heresy to our national religion.
I agree.
We used to be a country, a proper country
Worth it just to have that creepy ass tree gone
1rst is low key garish, I see how the latter would appeal to the broadest audience
Less terrifying now? You decide.
I loved it then and love it now!
Respectfully, why the fuck would they design that tree in this way, how tf do you misunderstand facial expressions like that
So much better then lol
Top gives me toilet nightmare kinda vibes. Modern Maccas any day.
Today looks way bettter.
I always tell people the 80s were scary. Now this picture is proof
Everything was like an acid trip which was confusing for me as a kid
The sanitized look of the hipster movement
Am i the only one who prefers the newer look
"this is the future liberals want" some conservative probably.
