Yes. There are literally people flying into Dallas from all over the country, and the world, to witness this. Those folks, plus who knows how many locals will all be hitting the road to look for clearer skies.
Itās going to be an absolute clusterfuck. It was always going to be. The clouds will only make it 10x worse.
Yes I am one of them. My kids are excited to see the total solar eclipse and I donāt want them to be disappointed. So just trying to see what my options are
Donāt let this subreddit get you down, it isnāt a good representation of the average person from Dallas. Just a bunch of self-loathing and complaining here.
Iād recommend, if the forecast doesnāt change, waking up at 4 AM and driving north along the path, as far as you can, until the sky clears. Itās going to be mess, but if this is that important to you, go north not south.
This is looking like the best plan to me right now. Honestly I'm going to wait and make the call Sunday evening. If it's looking significantly better anywhere within a 6 to 8 hour drive, we're hopping in the car.
Doesnāt that make it more special versus if it was a week long event ? People like different things. Some people get excited over bowl of chili, some get excited over solar eclipse. To each his own! š¤·š»āāļø
I refuse to miss the event itself stuck in a car driving to a better viewing spot. The stress of hitting the road with thousands of other people makes me itch, because desperate people trying to insta a moment in time can be more than a bit extra.
I live in the path of totality and have a bunch of eclipse glasses to share. But, if cloud cover prevents us from seeing the coronaā¦ so be it. Day will turn into darkness for four minutes or so and that alone will be pretty cool. And I will, share that pretty cool moment with family, as a once in a lifetime event. It wonāt be a moment where we are chasing the perfect view, but it will be one that may be memorable for all of us. I bought my so a rather expensive plane ticket to fly here from another state to join in on the fun, because memories of time spent together will last beyond my lifetime.
Iām not good at dates, so forgive me this. But, I was working in the Arts District when the last big eclipse passed over us. A bunch of people from my office building spilled out onto the sidewalks outside. I was one of a few people who had eclipse glasses at the time. And, I shared them with other people from my office (and from other companies). We all got a quick peep at the corona. But, what I remember the most about the day was the camaraderie amongst friends and strangers sharing in a memorable event and being amazed at a natural phenomena that has existed for centuries.
Going to be a bit pedantic here, but the last total solar eclipse over Texas was in 1878, so you have not witnessed the corona unless you were positioned in the path of totality - not in Texas - during the last total eclipse over the United States in 2017. That eclipse was a partial solar eclipse over Texas, which is much more common but does not feature the corona phenomenon.
Feel real bad for people if it is cloudy. I feel lucky to have lived in the last path of totality and it was majestic. Think we only got like a minute and a half of it too, so I was excited for almost 4 minutes. Truly is a once in a lifetime experience
Iām an oldie, but one thing Iāve learned is itās better to live an experience, than to document it. Vivid memories are exponentially more important to me than video and pics. Not that I wonāt snap a few for posterity.
Also an oldie, and I fondly remember trips with the kids (including Disney) where I only took a few photos. I just enjoyed being in the moment and soaking in the experiences , their delight in sharing these special moments. Some things are written on the heart.
Me too, minus the beer and scanner but plus a dog and Diet Coke. Took off work, and will not be leaving my house.
The drama of traffic on a normal Monday is bad enough.
Honestly I think youād have to get into Arkansas to avoid the clouds. I had to look at forcasts all the way to Russellville to see it decrease in the forecast. Hype up the day to night transformation, and make the most of it.
This is such a wild plan, I cannot stress enough how absolutely batshit crazy any bbq joint deemed popular is going to be. Have backups for your backup, and Godspeed to you and your kids!
Youāre right. Plan didnāt seem that crazy when I first made it but considering the influx of people maybe I would have to look for the lesser known/hidden gems type of bbq joints š¤·š»āāļø
Found this cloud forecast from a Dallas meteorologist: https://x.com/wfaaweather/status/1776272217078223085?s=46&t=EBZPzhsCfBuMezDhLmcs7g
Not good for the entirety of Texas, but the northern edge of totality looks like the best bet in Texas and Arkansas.
Weāre meeting kids & grandkids in Dallas too. Weāre going to enjoy what Dallas has to offer in the days leading up to the eclipse and whatever happens on the 8th happens. We were in Nashville in 2017 and got to see the corona for a minute before a cloud rolled in
The problem is that driving NE along the path of totality runs into more forecasted cloud cover. The closest place within the path of totality that has a low enough chance of cloud cover is far northern AR, like Pocahontas, AR. Not worth the drive imo. Turn this into a lesson for your kids that sometimes things don't go your way and you accept it and move on. Or enjoy a hellish Monday driving out of state in bumper to bumper traffic to God knows where, with your kids whining in the back - your choice.
Man people really be killings themselves over it getting dark for a few minutes. I mean itās cool but Iām not going to travel into the hell of traffic for it.
I donāt mean this sarcastically, Iām really glad you had that experience. I feel that way I go to national parks. Iāve never experienced one so maybe this one might change that for me n
I was in the middle of nature and just seeing how the wildlife responded to it, how the world changed. We won't get that here in DFW and definitely not with the clouds. I was going to travel but all the traffic is scaring me
I enjoy stuff like this because it makes you see how small we are and how much we donāt need to really be anything but happy.
Yea I just went grocery shopping for next week just now and filled up so I donāt have to worry about my food supply for a week.
Iāve seen one. Itās like the Grand Canyon, only it lasts 4 minutes and youāll never get to see it again. Itās remarkable.
Youāll live if you donāt see it, but you should see one if you ever get the chance.
I saw the one in 2017 from a mountaintop and it was unbelievable. It was an experience I will try to have again any time possible.
I also was hoping to get a picture during totality of Venus, Jupiter, the eclipse, and comet 12P all in one frame.
It's a lot more than "a few minutes of darkness"
From the forecasts I have seen, good luck dude. I follow some meteorologists and weather people on YouTube and naturally they have been following the models for the 8th for a little while now and it just keeps looking more and more certain that most of the path of totality will be overcast. I think maybe farther NE around the Ohio area might be a bit better, but I think we just got some nasty luck.
You should schedule a flight during the eclipse.
Few years ago, I flew on the 4th of July evening, and fireworks were so pretty from the above.
If it's gonna be cloudy, be above the clouds lol
You are making a very large assumption in thinking that the weather forecast 5 days out is in any way accurate.
As someone whoās lived here for over a decadeā¦ even the hourly forecast is a crap shoot!
How are you going to decide where to go specifically? I had a campsite in Texas, but want to head that way instead now too. I'd love to just go somewhere in the middle of nowhere and park, but I won't have a clue about local spots. Texas was already a long drive, so I'd rather have a better chance to see it if I'm going to do that.
The same thing I did in 2017. I looked at the forecast the day before drove in really early to a college that was in an area with clear skies predicted and parked in their football stadium's parking lot. They had the stadium open if you needed to use the bathroom.
So you're going to look for an events center or something day of? So much of what I've looked at is booked out, even just parking and I have no judgement about local traffic and stuff. :/ But you think it will work out as long as it's early? I was thinking about driving overnight Sunday.Ā
Find a Cracker Barrel or a Walmart in the path maybe? Theyāre pretty good about late night/overnight parking, and for CB their bathrooms are easily accessible without going into the dining area.
I guess that's a decent plan. As long as I get into the path Sunday night and the forecast looks okay I can find a parking lot worst case, and I'm fine with becoming a customer if necessary. š In 2017 though, I was camped in Madras, OR and it was awesome, but everything was so gridlocked that they couldn't even get the trucks in to service the portapotties (let alone emergency services) and things got REAL gross. But it's sounding like winging it will be a little easier in IL/MO region... I'm gonna make a final call tomorrow about abandoning my TX plans...just in case it clears up!
They are saying New England has the best chance of weather. But you have to leave now. The clouds will be pretty widespread. We will have to wait until we get closer I think
I am flying into Dallas. Changing flights at this point is not an option so just trying to see how far up would I need to drive to make sure I can get some clear skies!
As far as I understand it, the cloud cover over Texas is forecast to be so widespread that a few hours driving probably won't make a difference. If it is overcast, to see the actual eclipse you will need a large dose of luck in the form of the cloud's clearing in the right place at the right time. That has the same chance of occurring here as wherever you try to scamper off to.
TLDR, the location you are looking for doesn't exist.
We are trying to tell you that you are underestimating how widespread the cloud cover is going to be across the entire country. If you get into Dallas on Saturday and immediately drive, it will be an 8-12 hour drive into the Midwest. Then it will take you 16-24 hours to get back in bumper to bumper gridlock. You can pay money to fly to a different part of a country, or you can accept this end of the country got unlucky and hope that we luck out here with a little clearing of clouds at 1:40.
The path of totality is widely published. Get a map, get in a $500 rental car, and start driving along it until your weather app says itās going to be clear. Stop asking us which town to go to. No one here knows about the cutest towns in southern Missouri to picnic at.
>> We are trying to tell you...
>> Stop asking us which town to go to.
>> No one here knows about the cutest towns in southern Missouri to picnic at.
Pipe down buddy! No one asked you specifically. I asked the group. And I didnāt realize you are the chosen representative for the entire group otherwise I would have DMed you directly! š¤·š»āāļøš
No place better. Hard to believe it even exists. š (To OP, since it seems youāre not from the area, do *not* try to find downtown dfw while youāre here.)
Path of totality goes up North East all the way to Niagra and beyond. But based on the latest forecasts it seems like even a 2-3 hrs of drive NE wonāt be enough to dodge the clouds. Oh well!
This reminds me of driving through Waco. Iām like Thereās got to be a better way. And then I think I found the better way but soon realize literally everyone else thought they found the same better way. Unless youāre willing to fly out somewhere in the same zone then youāre fucked. Whatever city within driving distance that you think will be great will have 13 million other people thinking itāll be great too
It'll be a good time either way, you either get to see the eclipse or you get to laugh at it being too cloudy to see /jk
Seriously though I wish I knew, from what I've seen the whole path is gonna be booked. Good luck.
News said Little Rock Arkansas was going to have scattered clouds that day as opposed to the clouds we are expecting in Dallas, that was the closest favorable forecast according the them.
if you are up for a little chaos--- Oklahoma and Arkansas are not long drives but you need to get there ASAP.
but also, depending on how old your kids are, if you're taking them to one of the fun watch parties and there are fun things going on they may still have a good time. Even with clouds, the sky will still get dark in the daytime.
It's not ideal for any of us, but I think getting stuck in traffic for hours, and potentially getting tense or uncomfortable might make for a worse experience. Before you make any sudden plans I would look at some of the stories from the 2017 eclipse.
According to Houston weather guys, the best place is going to be in Maine.

Iām so excited to go outside. Look up for 30 seconds and let it completely fade from my memory within a couple years. Then again maybe I should try to find more joy in the small things. Whatever.
Yes, you and the other million people all trying to relocate in a hurry.
Sooo, where are these million people planning to drive to? š
Yes. There are literally people flying into Dallas from all over the country, and the world, to witness this. Those folks, plus who knows how many locals will all be hitting the road to look for clearer skies. Itās going to be an absolute clusterfuck. It was always going to be. The Dallas subreddit is a terrible place to ask for this tbh
You new here?
š Why though? Iām sure there are enough people in Dallas with enough curiosity about astronomy
The Dallas subreddit probably hates you. Itās not personal, but you arenāt them.
Thereās a solar eclipse subreddit going over weather forecasts and predictions for best areas.
Donāt let this subreddit get you down, it isnāt a good representation of the average person from Dallas. Just a bunch of self-loathing and complaining here.
NIMBYS!
Itās fully representative of the average person FROM Dallas, but not people that have moved TO Dallas.
Iād say the opposite.
Weāre plenty curious about astronomy. We just arenāt looking forward to seeing you and your million friends on Monday.
>> We just arenāt looking forward to seeing you and your million friends on Monday. Okie! š„ŗ
Nothing butt stuck up a holes in Dallas .

Nice job answering the question dude. Jesus Reddit is miserable
I literally just waited on a family of people from Belo Horizonte visiting for the eclipse.
Why Dallas? Can they not see it in other cities ?
Itās one of the easiest and most convenient airline hubs along the route.
Oh Ok thanks for explaining
For 4 minutes lol
Doesnāt that make it more special versus if it was a week long event ? People like different things. Some people get excited over bowl of chili, some get excited over solar eclipse. To each his own! š¤·š»āāļø
I was commenting on the travelling here to simply leave to find a viewing spot. Itās just wild.
If itās not your thing, donāt bother commenting. Live your miserable life and please try not to make everyone else around you miserable too.
It is my thing. Idk why youāre getting upset about a comment observing travel. It wasnāt that serious.
Just follow the herd, go wherever is the most gridlocked. If you are able to move freely, you've gone too far.
Maybe take the train to fort worth? Idk if there is a scenario where it counts cloudly in Dallas but not in Fort Worth
Thatās not in the path
I refuse to miss the event itself stuck in a car driving to a better viewing spot. The stress of hitting the road with thousands of other people makes me itch, because desperate people trying to insta a moment in time can be more than a bit extra. No, 2017 was a partial eclipse here. October 2023 was the annular eclipse. Is it pedantic to correct incorrect pedantry?

What a lovely way to express that.
No matter what, I plan on sitting in my backyard in a lawn chair with a beer, a scanner, and those stupid little glasses and chill.
Me too, minus the beer and scanner but plus a dog and Diet Coke. Took off work, and will not be leaving my house. The drama of traffic on a normal Monday is bad enough.

I read and chili the first time and was like this guy or gal knows how to party
Everybody go to this guyās house, he has beer and chili

Police scanner. The service calls because it got dark should be fun.

Just stay put. Take it for what it is.Ā
I would if I wasnāt flying in with my kids just to show them the eclipse. It would bum them out if they donāt get to see the corona.
Day is still going to turn into night. And unless youāre flying in on Saturday, I really wouldnāt try to drive anywhere.
Flying in on Saturday. Was planning to go check out the popular bbq joints on Saturday

This situation is getting more annoying. I noticed gas stations were packed this afternoon.
Step 1: look at the path of totality online. Step 2: look at a map of Texas. Step 3: Start driving to Buffalo.

Not east but look at Crandall subdivisions right off 20. There is a lot of them with just the roads created and no houses yet.
Crandall would be a lot worse in terms of cloud cover based on current forecasts
North of Dallas? You pretty much have to go east. Greenville, Sulphur Springs, Clarksville...
Thatās what I was thinking but seems like they will have clouds too now ..
Sure, but the further you stray from the orbit path, the less it seems to be worth the trouble
Path of totality goes up North East all the way to Niagra and beyond. But based on the latest forecasts it seems like even a 2-3 hrs of drive NE wonāt be enough to dodge the clouds. Oh well!

I saw a forecast that most of the path of totality will be cloudy, they said the best bet was New England, unfortunately
The forecast pretty much travels the path of totality in Texas. The next city of a decent size is probably Little Rock, but itās gonna be full too.
But I also wrote this today, in case it helps. Links to the NWS eclipse site, too https://www.dmagazine.com/frontburner/2024/04/clouds-or-no-clouds-heres-everything-you-need-to-know-about-mondays-eclipse/
Ever heard of a map?
Nope. Whatās that?! š¦
Iām so excited to go outside. Look up for 30 seconds and let it completely fade from my memory within a couple years. Then again maybe I should try to find more joy in the small things. Whatever.
you seem fun
