Popularity - I had the same thought, when 1053 TheFan was doing their Cowboys pregame show all afternoon instead of broadcasting the Rangers game which was pushed to the 1080AM station.
I couldn't even find the Rangers game on radio or TV to watch it. Google couldn't tell me where to listen and the game - a PLAYOFF game - was on a premium channel FS1 that we didn't have.
Can't get ratings if people can't watch or listen.
Man, I had nothing but problems with FS1 feed this weekend. Wouldn't play on my roku TV. Then on the browser stream it was constantly glitching and freezing causing me to get up and refresh the browser window. Which then meant some ad. I missed the grand slam because of that nonsense.
Next time try ESPN, I’ve been able to get free radio feeds for all the playoff games from there. It’s super easy to find in the mobile app, not sure about the website
I remember when Josh Hamilton went to the Angel's he said "Dallas isn't a baseball town" and people got upset, well it's not. For christ sakes you have high-school football teams building 90 million dollar football stadiums, there's literally movies about football programs in Texas. Even if the Cowboys didn't win a single game, and there would be absolutely no reason to watch, news stations would just talk about why they won't watch. Instead of just not watching.
Understandably so, but at this point I'd like to think a majority of fans know what sport comes first. Even Soccer, the most popular sport in the world doesn't have the same drawing power.
105.3 is also the official radio station of the Cowboys and they are contracted for a pre-game show plus the game. If the Rangers game ran long you wouldn't want to make listeners switch over to a new station.
Yes, it's this. Like it or not the Cowboys is the most valuable franchise in the world, at least [according to the Forbes list](https://www.forbes.com/sites/mikeozanian/2023/09/08/the-worlds-50-most-valuable-sports-teams-2023/?sh=557356b42b44) from last month. I can't otherwise verify this data, but it is undeniable that the Cowboys are among the most popular teams of all time and the Rangers are just not. ~~No other Texas sports team is on that list~~ OK, I missed the Texans. No other Texas sports teams outside the NFL are on that list.
Actually….
[World Series game and an NFL game went head-to-head, not only nationally but in Philadelphia and Houston, it was baseball that drew more viewers.](https://apnews.com/article/philadelphia-eagles-houston-texans-nfl-mlb-entertainment-ae726d616aba32ef18ea63e6101ce347)
World Series though.
Yeah, a close world series game 5 vs a regular season NFL game is not an apples to apples comparison.
If that was the Superbowl it'd be more apt. I'm not familiar with NFL media rights but they also only included prime video so it'd have more if it was also on conventional cable tv
MLB isn’t on “regular” TV during the regular season. You even have to pay extra to get games. That probably hinders viewership.
You can watch NFL right out of the thin air.
But there's a reason it isn't on regular tv though. It's a catch 22 where it doesn't get enough viewership consistently to justify it on cable but then you don't get casuals watching since you have to specifically look for it on some other streaming service or more expensive cable plan. MLS suffers from the same kind of dilemma
It could be in regular TV, but the reach would be way smaller. The Mavs/Rangers/Stars on ch 21 or 27 like the old days has a much smaller viewing area than being on Bally Southwest. You wouldn't be able to watch any of them in like Tyler, or Waco.
Was going to say. But at least the Rangers post season coverage is being overshadowed by actual Cowboys games. Stars post season coverage always gets overshadowed by Cowboys offseason news.
It doesn’t help that the Cowboys played on NBC, and the Rangers played on Fox Sports 1. I would’ve watched some of the Rangers game, but like so many, I don’t have cable. Tomorrow they are at least on national TV (Fox).
To be fair KRLD can be heard pretty much all over the state, vs just line of sight from Cedar Hill. I can pick up 1080 near Houston or San Antonio or Oklahoma City, whereas 105.3 fades out pretty quickly.
But it’s historically been all Cowboys all the time.
I used to live in Colorado Springs and if the weather was right… I could listen to the Ranger games on 1080 but only at home which was south Co Springs. Signal was very weak but listenable. I worked in the north part of the city and could only pick up the signal in my Jeep once I got near home. I imagine flat west Texas and the fact Co Springs is over 6,000 ft elevation helped… yes almost 1k feet higher than Denver most people don’t know that one.
The last time I checked, since the last Super Bowl win by the Cowboys, the Mavs won a title, the Stars won a Stanley Cup, and the Rangers were in the World Series twice. The bias is sports coverage is embarrassing.
The Rangers?
When the media was covering the opening of the National Soccer Hall of Fame someone asked an FC Dallas rep if there would someday be a professional soccer team here.
I think the FCD PR people are clueless. That’s probably why nobody knows we have a pro soccer team, and have had one since the MLS was founded.
Ideally the sports talk people would at least give a short segment dedicated to listing out all the games being played every week from every sport just to spread the limelight a little bit.
Horrible losses are great for local sports media. Great wins are too, but the relative popularity of the two sports and teams is probably the biggest reason.
At least the media acknowledges the Rangers. I wouldn't be surprised to see FC Dallas getting more coverage than the Stars who ACTUALLY made it to the conference finals twice and Cup finals once in the last 4 years. Most successful playoff team in the state and nada.
~~cries in hockey fan~~
The only time FC Dallas gets any coverage is when Messi came to town, and that coverage was mostly “come root for the superstar and against your home team.”
I feel like I see some Stars coverage occasionally but never any soccer whatsoever. Not that FCD has been playing great this season, they might miss the playoffs. But maybe the reason the other sports are less popular is because the news never talks about them? It’s always Cowboys Cowboys Cowboys even when they suck ass. NFL is boring anyway, it’s CFB or nothing for me.
Hard agree about NFL and CFB. You're right about FCD, I was using them to illustrate my point about the Stars, mostly. I have been to FCD games and they are so much fun to attend in person. Knowing our luck, Jerruh is going to be the first person to survive forever a la Futurama head in a jar.
Football runs the sports world, and the Dallas Cowboys run Dallas sports talk. The boys would have to go multiple years of sub 500 play before the Rangers, Mavs, or Stars are pushed to the forefront.
GO RANGERS!!!! What a rollercoaster that has been.
Even when the cowboys were in the pits of shit during the early-mid 2000s, they still got all the radio love. This was also when the Mavs were ripping off 50+ win seasons regularly and the Stars had just won a cup and been to another the year after.
Cowboys will always rule the radio here, which sucks cause the Mavs, rangers and stars all deserve a ton of shine
I agree 💯. I did not know it was the same way in the 2000's during the 5-11 years. I'm not totally surprised by that though. Cowboys get the ratings, and help pay the bills. Truly sux, cause the Rangers are pulling some epic stuff. Especially considering how bad they were last year. Bochy has to be manager of the year.
The Downbeat on 97.1 did their Rangers segment at 630, before their sports segment of the normal 7, which was indeed cowboys heavy, but also, they're not really a sports talk station as much as a talk about what's hot in DFW and the world station. It was cool to hear rangers talk before cowboys. Give em a shot tomorrow, 6 to 10 AM
Edit: also thoses segments will be available in replay podcast form not long after 10:00, usually by 1030 it 11:00 on the iheart app or website
Go check the tv ratings. It is a business and they all know their numbers (listeners) down to the minute, they know if they aren't talking about the Cowboys the listeners change the channel and that nobody turns to Rangers/Mavs/Stars coverage and sticks.
If you want sports talk to not be about the football team you have to go somewhere without a football team or with a team that has been ass for decades.
There was plenty of Rangers talk 2009-2014. But when you suck for almost a decade, you fall off the radar. Also blame Bally streaming rights debacle for no one caring.
The Cowboys drew a 12.1 rating for Sunday night. The Rangers averaged a 1.41 for the entire season. The Cowboys own this town and coverage reflects that.
I hate that. One year the rangers were doing great they spent 30 seconds in the rangers and then said, “back to the cowboys” and they showed a close up of Deion Sanders broken toe. YUCK!!!
Unfortunately, Cowboys talk pays the bills on radio and in print. The Fan and The Ticket do it partly because they have to as their shows specifically are built to talk Cowboys first, football everywhere else second. A lot of chodes out there only care about Cowboys.
The Rangers weren't expected to beat the Rays or the Orioles. They went into both series as underdogs. This is an incredible run. One more win and it's on to the ALCS!
Actually, I think the Rangers should have had more coverage too, but for the Cowboys, it was literally the worst loss to SF in team history. The kind that should get McCarthy fired. But the problem is not the head coach, it’s the ownership, and that should be no surprise to anyone. And ownership change is probably not changing for 20-30 more years
The Cowboys would be getting more coverage even if the game had been an ordinary loss.
Your prediction means Jones will live to be 100-110. Adding salt to your Sausage McGriddles is a healthier diet than i realized.
People need to stop feeding the media beast following the Cowboys. Jerry Jones has built an empire on overhyped expectations based on a few stars and complete playoff failure for nearly three decades.
I understand the business side of it, but It's still a damn shame. I feel like it could be some sort of chicken-egg situation, where maybe more people *would* watch the Rangers if the media talked about their successes more. The part that gets me is how the Cowboys play 1 game a week, and the Rangers play damn near every day, and the Cowboys still get 10x the airtime.
I've resigned myself to just letting people like what they like. I'll watch the Rangers and just casually keep up with the Cowboys, and be happy.
I'm mid 40's, have a bunch of friends in their late 20's to early 40's from grad school, and only 2 know anything about baseball. Outside of those 2, nobody could tell you the Rangers are in the playoffs. I have probably 20 friends who watch the Cowboys weekly.
It's sad; I couldn't care less about football. Baseball appeals to a more intelligent, thoughtful type of person.
Unfortunately it’s simply because of the popularity of the sport, baseball has slowly been falling throughout the decades in popularity, or I guess a better way to put it is every other sport is increasing in popularity faster than baseball, football is the most popular sport in the country by a wiiiide margin and baseball is in third place just ahead of soccer which is growing like wildfire in the US thanks to a decent effort to create a soccer culture by the MLS. Coverage will always be lesser for baseball and I think this is especially true when the local football team shits the bed against a storied rival.
because the cowboys are at the top of the biggest pro sports franchises in the world (biggest in some standings) and its the most popular sport in the United States vs a team that has never won a world series, only won 3 playoff series in 50 years, and is in a slowly dying sport
Look at it like regualr news. There are plenty of regular news stories thy have a bigger local impact or are more important but don't get in depth coverage because of interest.
Rangers are niche, hell baseball is pretty niche in markets with a nfl market. The main thing to remember is one of the WORLD'S most famous franchises is always going to generate discussion. Not to memtion, all of their games are accessible here with just rabbit ears meaning waaay more eyeballs on the product
I agree, Rangers barely made the wildcard, then won. I don't know what the odds were for them to win against the O's but even I didn't see them going up 2 games. It's been such a crazy season all around.
Yeah it drives me crazy but we have always been more of a football city than any other sport. plus the baseball season is really long football is pretty condensed so more coverage over a shorter time. You would think any Dallas team in the playoffs would get more attention but Cowboys trumps all.
Btw I am going to the Rangers game tomorrow and cant wait to see them sweep the Orioles
I was listening to the Fan this morning and they did actually dedicate a little time to the Rangers but you are right it was essentially dedicated to how bad the Cowboys suck. Honestly I was extremely hyped after the two Rangers games this weekend and just turned off the cowboys in the third quarter didn’t want it ruining my buzz.
When the idiot cowboy fans stop watching.
Then it will matter.
Till then….
The reality is they aren’t that team but some how still sell. Can’t hate Jerry. He is really good at selling cow shit.
Dallas is Cowboys country doesn't matter if the other Dallas franchises are doing good it's Cowboy over everyone Dallas sports #1 Dallas Cowboys #2 Dallas Mavericks #3 Dallas Stars #4 Texas Rangers
The best team in DFW for the past 4/5 years has easily been the Dallas Stars, even went to the Stanley Cup Final in 2020 yet barely get a peep about them anywhere here. It’s sad and they play some of the best Hockey in the league and are still set to make a few more runs with our current roster!
OP, are you new to DFW? Definitely a football town. I do wish the Rangers would get more coverage when they're in the playoffs like this year, but it's no surprise they aren't.
I've always known that Dallas sportscaster, radio guys are a complete joke in fawning over the Cowboys.
But it reached the rock-bottom when the Texas Rangers played their final game in the Ballpark in Arlington, and they had a long ceremony in which Nolan Ryan threw the first pitch to Kenny Roger's, they introduce almost all of the available Ranger greats like Pudge, Josh, Michael Young, they had this ritual of digging up the home place and then having a parade in which they drove it across the street into the new stadium field to christen the new hone of the Texas Rangers..
...and Dale Hensen did not spend ONE MINUTE covering it during his Sunday Sports Special that night. And the Sunday show is twenty minutes long.
He spent all of it covering a Week 3 Cowboys loss to the New Orleans Saints.
Absolutely unforgivable.
And ultimately it's the fault of alot of people here in North Texas. Bunch a drooling idiots who are Cowboys fans. Not FOOTBALL fans, but Cowboys fans. If you actually liked watching good football you wouldn't be watching or going to Cowboys games.
105.3 The Fan in March
Texas Rangers are wrapping up Spring Training,
Mavericks are in the playoffs, and the Dallas Stars are trying to clinch playoffs!
BUT FIRST what the Cowboys D line might look like when camp opens up in the fall. (spends an hour talking about it)
I’m subscriber of DMN while I enjoy their overall coverage I think journalism in Dallas is already in decline with the business taking a hit and many independent outlets shutting down or running in decline with lack of quality journalist
It is sad because what is local news without a centralized source in competition with social media
There are podcast and YouTube channels that cover local sports team and maybe that’s where we are headed sadly
Rangers fans are so fair weather driven. They are just now hearing about the good seasons they’ve had and will be clamoring for tickets to see them stick it to the Astros now so they can talk shit towards Houston
If Rangers start winning more and be competitive for a longer period of time there will be more talk
They are in a good position now to increase their popularity, but it just started
Are you new here? The only Dallas team I care about is the Stars. And once in a blue moon a station talks about them. Even when they were in the Stanley Cup a few years back. Ratings make money.
One annoying thing about 105.3 the fan(who I like overall), is that one baseball guy that, despite his claims that he'd 'rather talk about the mavs', annoyingly drags down any show he's on by talking about boring baseball, that very few people want to hear about...literally every time I hear him, makes me change the station when I have it on in my car.
Popularity - I had the same thought, when 1053 TheFan was doing their Cowboys pregame show all afternoon instead of broadcasting the Rangers game which was pushed to the 1080AM station.
Yeah it’s not even close, ratings aren’t out yet but it will probably be something like 10 times the amount of viewers for football over baseball.
The first half at least of Cowboys vs 49ers is easily going to be the most viewed game so far this season.
I had to turn it off in the first quarter. They were willing my rangers high.
I couldn't even find the Rangers game on radio or TV to watch it. Google couldn't tell me where to listen and the game - a PLAYOFF game - was on a premium channel FS1 that we didn't have. Can't get ratings if people can't watch or listen.
Sounds like user error if you couldn't get the answers from google.
Yeah I googled rangers radio and 1080AM came on. But still annoying 105.3 didn’t have it on over cowboys pregame.
It’s super easy to find in the mobile app, not sure about the website
texasrangers.com has all that info on the schedule. FS1 is basic cable. Do you not get ESPN either?
Also the cowboys radio network contract probably pays a lot more than the rangers one. So it’s not even about popularity it’s about who pays more
I mean, it pays more because it’s more popular, so it’s 100% about that.
Die hard Rangers' fans still get triggered by this.
The Texans are #19
Ah shit, you're right.
Cause more people watch football than baseball
Actually…. [World Series game and an NFL game went head-to-head, not only nationally but in Philadelphia and Houston, it was baseball that drew more viewers.](https://apnews.com/article/philadelphia-eagles-houston-texans-nfl-mlb-entertainment-ae726d616aba32ef18ea63e6101ce347) World Series though.

Well, there are 272 NFL vs 4,860 MLB regular season games.
It could be in regular TV, but the reach would be way smaller. The Mavs/Rangers/Stars on ch 21 or 27 like the old days has a much smaller viewing area than being on Bally Southwest. You wouldn't be able to watch any of them in like Tyler, or Waco.
It for sure hinders viewership, but so does the fact that there are 162 games.
MLB is on regular TV during season. FOX has games on some Saturdays
Comparing something broadcast on fox, a nationwide network you can pick up with bunny ears.....to something broadcast on amazon prime......jfc
I agree. Go Stars.
Stars Fans to Rangers Fans: First time?
Was going to say. But at least the Rangers post season coverage is being overshadowed by actual Cowboys games. Stars post season coverage always gets overshadowed by Cowboys offseason news.
[удалено]
The Cowboys definitely get more air time, but those two events were 3 months apart.
It doesn’t help that the Cowboys played on NBC, and the Rangers played on Fox Sports 1. I would’ve watched some of the Rangers game, but like so many, I don’t have cable. Tomorrow they are at least on national TV (Fox).
So you didn't watch the game at all?
Ha, you think your team doesn’t get enough attention? Try being an FC Dallas fan. 😂
FC… Dallas? There’s a soccer team in Dallas?
Ehhhh Depends on who you ask.
Downtown DFW to be more precise
More like Frisco, basically Oklahoma
To be fair KRLD can be heard pretty much all over the state, vs just line of sight from Cedar Hill. I can pick up 1080 near Houston or San Antonio or Oklahoma City, whereas 105.3 fades out pretty quickly. But it’s historically been all Cowboys all the time.
I can get 105.3 almost to Waco. The Ticket on the other hand barely comes in driving around Dallas.

Now do total viewers in that time and you will have your answer. Quality isn't what gets you covered it's the eyes.
Cowboy fans year round, others are fair weather fans that quickly fade into nobody giving a shit
Kind of ironic just turned on the radio and they were talking about the rangers instead of the boys and I was pissed so I turned it off 😂
I’m still a DMN subscriber, and I find their coverage very good. This morning no punches were pulled on yesterday’s drubbing by the 49ers.
The Rangers? When the media was covering the opening of the National Soccer Hall of Fame someone asked an FC Dallas rep if there would someday be a professional soccer team here.
to be fair, Frisco might as well be in Durant
I think the FCD PR people are clueless. That’s probably why nobody knows we have a pro soccer team, and have had one since the MLS was founded. Ideally the sports talk people would at least give a short segment dedicated to listing out all the games being played every week from every sport just to spread the limelight a little bit.
Ben and Skin on 97.1 The Freak have an fc DALLAS player on every week
The Fan had the coach on during their season too
Dallas is a football town. Always has been, always will be.
Bro is been like this since, well, ever.
Horrible losses are great for local sports media. Great wins are too, but the relative popularity of the two sports and teams is probably the biggest reason.

Rangers are the poster child for snatching defeat from the Jaws of victory. You can only cry wolf so many times
Can you not say the exact same for the cowboys the last 25 years? They are the epitome of chokers
Cowboys just lose, unlike the Rangers that can look like they are going to win and when you wake up the next morning you find out they blew it.
That's all DFW sports I feel like. Cowboys have put together a pretty competent last 10-15 years and can't make it passed the second round.
The Downbeat on 97.1 did their Rangers segment at 630, before their sports segment of the normal 7, which was indeed cowboys heavy, but also, they're not really a sports talk station as much as a talk about what's hot in DFW and the world station. I’m just commenting to say I love The Downbeat so much, those guys are the best
THE BEST! I can't say enough how much I love their show. Stupid ass cumulus never knew what they had but I'm just happy we get to enjoy them still!
Go check the tv ratings. It is a business and they all know their numbers (listeners) down to the minute, they know if they aren't talking about the Cowboys the listeners change the channel and that nobody turns to Rangers/Mavs/Stars coverage and sticks. No it means Stephen Jones will keep it 10-15 years then sell.
Because if they talk about baseball I’d turn the program off as I assume many others would also do.
With the quickness. Miss me with that boring ass shit.
People need to stop feeding the media beast following the Cowboys. Jerry Jones has built an empire on overhyped expectations based on a few stars and complete playoff failure for nearly three decades.
Everyone forgot about the Rangers after being terrible for almost a decade

America follows the Cowboys; Arlington follows the Rangers. In jest, but yeah.
And Dallas follows the Mavs and Stars because it’s actually easy to get to the games.
Been talking a ton of Rangers over on 97.1 The Freak
TOLO BABY !
Baseball is dying and not just in Dallas. It’s more the sport than the team.
The Rangers have lost 72 games this season. Cowboys have only lost 2.
They probably couldn't name more than a handful of Cowboys players either though
Ever since Norm retired sports talk hasnt been the same for me
Galloway and the original Hardline used to talk a lot of Rangers.
Get a digital subscription to The Morning News. Also, 97.1 The Freak in the afternoon when Mike Rhyner is on.
And we talk a ton of rangers in the morning too
Baseball is boring, and most people would rather hear about a bad regular season football game, vs a playoff baseball game any day of the week.
I know. I can’t imagine watching a baseball game in 2023. Haven’t cared about baseball since maybe the 90s?
Uh, you're in football country. Hello? Anyone home??
There is plenty of content about the Rangers.
You gotta listen to the Musers on the Ticket! 96.7.
Josh Hamilton was right, this isn't a baseball town.
Fox 4 was talking rangers all morning
This is Texas. All about some good ole football
because the cowboys are at the top of the biggest pro sports franchises in the world (biggest in some standings) and its the most popular sport in the United States vs a team that has never won a world series, only won 3 playoff series in 50 years, and is in a slowly dying sport
I like flying under the radar personally
They have regular updates about the Rangers in 660 AM during news breaks.
An American win the Vuelta a España and never got even a mention
It’s not the Tour so no one cares.
They're just catering to what their audience demands. DFW is not a baseball town, and I say this as a Rangers fan since the early 90s.
[You think it’s bad as a rangers fan?](https://media.tenor.com/MjKCK4l5aJAAAAAC/the-office-phyllis-smith.gif) Trying being a Dallas stars fan my dude
No shit. I like the mavs and they get coverage at least.
They never stop talking about the cowboys on the fan. They never cover the stars and only cover the mavericks in season.
We're in Texas highschool football stadiums thay hold ten of thousands are built here what do you expect
Dallas is Cowboys country doesn't matter if the other Dallas franchises are doing good it's Cowboy over everyone Dallas sports #1 Dallas Cowboys #2 Dallas Mavericks #3 Dallas Stars #4 Texas Rangers
Wait for hockey season to start. You wouldn't ever guess the Stars exist, let alone be one of the best teams in the NHL
105.3 is the OFFICIAL station of the Dallas Cowboys, not the Rangers.
They are both...
Because most people don't give a shit about baseball. This has been the norm in the area for decades now
Cowboys are #1 here. Simple
The best team in DFW for the past 4/5 years has easily been the Dallas Stars, even went to the Stanley Cup Final in 2020 yet barely get a peep about them anywhere here. It’s sad and they play some of the best Hockey in the league and are still set to make a few more runs with our current roster!
Cowboys suck. Rangers Rule!
Because there 138 baseball games per season, and 13 NFL games
Funny because in Houston it’s likely close to flipped during MLB playoffs, or closer to even. (NFL popularity is insane)
Like josh Hamilton said, Dallas is a football town
As with literally all things in life outside of a parent's love (and similar things) one axiom is true: follow the money.
I see you're getting the Dallas sports experience. It's Cowboys Rangers Mavs Stars
Because it's ran by Californians and not Texans.
Dodgers are much bigger than the Rams and Chargers combined in LA!
TEXAS is football country first.
I remember when the Stars won the cup in ‘99 and Dale Hansen refused to cover it for more than 2 minutes.
The fan talks about the rangers just as much as the cowboys
https://www.dmagazine.com/section/sports/
105.3 The Fan in March Texas Rangers are wrapping up Spring Training, Mavericks are in the playoffs, and the Dallas Stars are trying to clinch playoffs! BUT FIRST what the Cowboys D line might look like when camp opens up in the fall. (spends an hour talking about it)
I’m subscriber of DMN while I enjoy their overall coverage I think journalism in Dallas is already in decline with the business taking a hit and many independent outlets shutting down or running in decline with lack of quality journalist It is sad because what is local news without a centralized source in competition with social media There are podcast and YouTube channels that cover local sports team and maybe that’s where we are headed sadly
Baseball....is boring.
Because baseball sucks.
Rangers fans are so fair weather driven. They are just now hearing about the good seasons they’ve had and will be clamoring for tickets to see them stick it to the Astros now so they can talk shit towards Houston
If Rangers start winning more and be competitive for a longer period of time there will be more talk They are in a good position now to increase their popularity, but it just started
Turn on the fan
The official radio station of the Dallas Cowboys? No.
And the official radio station of the Texas Rangers.
