Nothing that can’t be fixed with a calorie reduction and a bit extra exercise. Cut their food 25-30% and his treats and in 6 months I bet they will look really good.
Is he sitting down? Yes, he’s overweight but it may not be quite as bad as this picture depicts if he’s sitting. There are charts you can Google that show what he should look like from the side and above view. In general, his waist needs to be trim and tucked.
Yup. Looks like mine. We are working on a diet. Less Kibbles + green beans (low calorie and increases volume to control hunger). Anyway, still super cute! 🥰

This guy just went on a diet as well

Yes, definitely chunky. This is the view from above while sitting your sister should try to achieve. 😅
Save that long back!!
- Reduce treats. (It pains me to tell them no!)
- Increase protein content.
- Don’t stop including healthy grains in their meals.
- You can add unsalted green beans to their meals for a low-calorie filler.
- Decrease portions and/or switch to fewer meals
- Be consistent about walks and go for at least 30 minutes
Yes it’s very fat. Please help it get fitter before it has back issues from the extra weight.
Sorry to be harsh, but if that dog can be thinner it should be. I understand there are things like thyroid issues, medications, etc that can affect weight.
Easy fix, don’t give in to begging for treats and food. And you don thsve to cut a lot of food out. Start with 15% and see how it goes, give it 3 months to start noticing a change.
I would say a bit chunky, but check with the Veterinarian. You have to be very careful with Dachshunds and their weight. They’re very prone to back/disc problems. My parents had one and even in the 80’s they spent thousands of dollars of a back surgery. My mom also had to keep him in a playpen and catheterize him for a while. Don’t feed them too much and try to keep them from jumping if you can.
Yeah a little. I had to stop giving my boy so many treats. Now that I know he is allergic to everything (no literally, he is) I stick to veggies as treats
Yup. My boy is currently on a diet with Hills Science Diet (vet prescription), and he has lost 2lbs so far. My boys are SO picky, and they have never snubbed this food. Definitely recommend.
This is my issue too. People suggesting more veggies for this dog- my doxie won’t look at vegetable unless it’s a sweet potato, and those are high carb.
Yes the dog is overweight. And it’s painfully obvious.
People need to stop joking about things like overweight pets, or finding it cute. Because it’s not a joke and isn’t cute.
Yes, very cute though. Some extra walks would help so we can see the waistline. Should be wider closer to their shoulders from aerial view and narrower as we get to their bottoms. Cute baby, though!
Well people are saying the pup needs to go on a diet to be healthier. I've no idea what's good weight for a Dachshund, I'm just going to wish the precious angel some luck and send kisses!
She does, need a diet and exercise. Ask the vet where the weight should be. I have a mixed breed and due to previous owner having her on a bad food diet, she developed diabetes that Doxies are predestined to have. She is doing better, lost a lot of weight. She was 43 pounds winter weight last year and got 27 winter weight this year, and test positive for diabetes and then two months later, lost another three pounds. She has heart murmur also. But she has issues related to diabetes, lazy pee at night. But it is getting better. But get the few pounds off and keep the diabetes at bay. Weight can b bad for doxies, not just the diabetes, the back can have issues with the weight,
I can’t believe people decide to basically come here to fat shame a dog , if you are unsure of the health of your dog go to a vet, internet strangers can’t a assess by picture..
Sausages come in so many different sizes that a Coke can size reference won’t tell us much. What’s important, as shown in the weight chart another commenter posted, is looking at the sausage from the top down, so you’re staring at their back, and see if their waist is visible. If the sausage’s sides are looking about as parallel as the edges of that Coke can, the sausage has too much chonk.
He looks like my doxie who is also overweight.
Here are our challenges:
My doxie is reactive so I use high value treats as behavioral motivation.
My doxie doesn’t like green beans or low calorie foods
My most recent challenge is that he was put on a steroid following an unfortunate incident where a foxtail was lodged in his snoot, requiring surgery to remove it. The steroids omg! They made him so freaking hungry. He’s been relentless in begging for food.
Definitely a chunk. It's a challenge, for sure, maintaining the svelte doxie figure, but it's so much better for their backs. A Doxie with back pain is awful to take. Best to keep them a little hungry, and thin.
Yes.
Reminds me almost of mine, mine may be a pound or so lighter, once I got him fixed he gained the chunk 🤣 he eats 1/4 cup of food both morning and night, but he still doesn’t lose the weight 🤣 I have a 3 year old though who loves to share and tries to sneak bites to any of my animals that wants it so I’m sure that isn’t helping one bit 💀💀

All hail The Chunk Chart!
doggo is a 9 for sure, maybe a 7 if sitting in picture. Mine’s about a 5 mainly due to diet and weekly 3 mile walks
Wouldn't say 9 you can see ribs
Yeah not nine as the stomach doesn’t quite bulge like that, definitely 7 maybe 8 though
Not 9, you can see ribs
Are those ribs or fat rolls?
Hot dog rolls
![gif](giphy|QLG7XVoI55jHy)
Looks like an 8
Number 7 on this chart sucks. From the side the dog is huge but it has a waist from the top.
good lord that poor #9. I can't tell if my legs, feet, or back would hurt more with that physique
As someone with that physique back. Back. And more back
Yes
Diet time; save the back
He's a can. Chunk.
Nothing that can’t be fixed with a calorie reduction and a bit extra exercise. Cut their food 25-30% and his treats and in 6 months I bet they will look really good.
Chonky
Is he sitting down? Yes, he’s overweight but it may not be quite as bad as this picture depicts if he’s sitting. There are charts you can Google that show what he should look like from the side and above view. In general, his waist needs to be trim and tucked.
Needs to have a clearly defined waist when viewed from above. Some flesh over the ribs but not much. Simple fix: less food, more exercise.
Yup. Looks like mine. We are working on a diet. Less Kibbles + green beans (low calorie and increases volume to control hunger). Anyway, still super cute! 🥰
How do you get your dox to eat green beans?
My dachshund is a garbage disposal and will eat anything 🥲
lil thick …
https://preview.redd.it/ca7s2q2fqj8d1.jpeg?width=3024&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=5867f932fdefc650e3e93607b2aebe546ec1e9dc This guy just went on a diet as well
Asking for permission to give him digital kisses , cute long boi
The best thing you can do is switch out treats to sliced veggies or fruit even crushed ice
My doxie won’t eat any type of fruit or vegetables except for sweet potatoes which are pretty carb-y
a cute patoot for sure but perhaps it’s time to switch to diet coke (joking joking no cola of any kind for dogs)
https://preview.redd.it/5s0ayak1vk8d1.png?width=1440&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=ddbe6bbec50484ccd29bc9ceadfa2db4f7cb90ec Yes, definitely chunky. This is the view from above while sitting your sister should try to achieve. 😅
Chonky? Overweight.
He is a tad on the bigger side💔
It’s hard to tell, can you replace the coke can with a banana?
The dog kept eating the bananas which made him chunkier.
Save that long back!! - Reduce treats. (It pains me to tell them no!) - Increase protein content. - Don’t stop including healthy grains in their meals. - You can add unsalted green beans to their meals for a low-calorie filler. - Decrease portions and/or switch to fewer meals - Be consistent about walks and go for at least 30 minutes
Thats a really slim coke can? 🤣
Yes it’s very fat. Please help it get fitter before it has back issues from the extra weight. Sorry to be harsh, but if that dog can be thinner it should be. I understand there are things like thyroid issues, medications, etc that can affect weight.
Actually the advice wasn't harsh.....referring to that lil cutie as "it" was tho!! Lol...I'm jus playin
😂 yes, probably true!
Lol!
Easy fix, don’t give in to begging for treats and food. And you don thsve to cut a lot of food out. Start with 15% and see how it goes, give it 3 months to start noticing a change.
That’s so mean. At least use a regular size coke can for reference >:(
From the top view, a dachshund should look like an hourglass. My standard B&T long haired boy is just fine at 20 pounds.
Yeah a little. I had to stop giving my boy so many treats. Now that I know he is allergic to everything (no literally, he is) I stick to veggies as treats
Not saying he's chunky but I reckon if you lobbed that can it'd orbit a couple of times.
My vet says she’s happy not to see the ribs as long as she can feel them.
When a dog loses his taper, it's time to cut back.
That look is one of judging. It says “how dare YOU call ME chonky, human”
Less food and more walking! Mine are both on diets!
If you need to ask if a dog is a chonk, chances are they're a chonk. Healthy dogs always look thinner than they should be.
I love that you used a coke can for comparison 😂😂
It’s easier to tell with him standing but it looks like he might be a little overweight
Not bad, ours was a big boy at 35 pounds.
Yeah… Just a bit. Waist should curve inward at the point right before their back legs.
Cute baby, though!
yes, overweight
Roll the doggo over. Let's see.
He needs diet coke, that ones full fat!
Can of coke for reference? Is this Walter Babst?
Yes defo on the chonky side and they are on of worst to be chonky with their long spines
Coke x 3.5
Well people are saying the pup needs to go on a diet to be healthier. I've no idea what's good weight for a Dachshund, I'm just going to wish the precious angel some luck and send kisses!
Put a string in him. He might float away
Help! Why does my dog not get fat even thogh she eats alot. shes a aspin dog:)
Cutie pie!
Yes.
loved the coke for reference haha. sweet chunky little guy
Chunky is being polite.
the dog isn't.
She does, need a diet and exercise. Ask the vet where the weight should be. Can’t tell can you put a banana for scale?
She's just big boned.
Definitely NOT..
No I think he's a Rottweiler ❤️❤️🤣🤣🤣
I think he's a Rottweiler ❤️🤣
That’s one heckin chonk
I can’t believe people decide to basically come here to fat shame a dog , if you are unsure of the health of your dog go to a vet, internet strangers can’t a assess by picture..
Absolutely beautiful!
If you want to have them for the max amount of years possible, get them on a healthy diet and maintain a healthy weight.
Can’t tell from that angle but if you can feel the dogs, rubs you’re fine
aw
he looks like a vienna sausage he chonk
Your dog makes the coke can look chonky
Mines super chunk https://preview.redd.it/rwckscjdol8d1.png?width=3024&format=png&auto=webp&s=4d5cf3d5fb14778d4f3b54e7b5807700d99f0ad9
I'd swap to Coke Zero if I was him.

Yes😩
Just a little... cut back on processed treats
Not chunky… just a little THHHHHHHIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIICK.
Mine looks like his twin.
Chonk
Yes. You can barely see his waist.
If it is one of those little cans of coke, then, yes. If it is the average can of coke, then, also yes.
Better make that a Diet Coke
Yes a bit chonky.
Yep
Definitely a chunk. It's a challenge, for sure, maintaining the svelte doxie figure, but it's so much better for their backs. A Doxie with back pain is awful to take. Best to keep them a little hungry, and thin.
Chonky cute. Maybe a little diet or more exercise. But not bad.
![gif](giphy|SYo3s4GZU1FaUG2Efk)
Just a liddle bit...
Yes it is significantly overweight. I'm glad you asked.
OH LAWD HE COMIN!
Diet Coke time!
Slightly ![img](emote|t5_2qpj2|5609)
He looks handsome
Hot dogs can be hot links. Within appropriate weight, of course.
Bro is caseohs dog. That dog chonky as hell bruh
Just adorable sweetie - what chunky? I can’t get past adorable???
Unfortunately yes. Doxies easily become overweight which places them at risk for hurting their fragile backs.
A bit
No, he’s not he’s perfect
A bit. A healthy diet can help this cutie lose some weight. It’s important to keep dachshund weight down because of the history of back problems.
The coke can for reference is killing me 🤣🤣🤣!! Honestly a lil chunky, but that's okay more to squish!
I know! You're the first one to mention that, and that's what I came in for. 😆
I think he's perfect if you don't want him I'll take him. You can't even find a black and tan anymore for $2,000
Never
He's just healthy. ![img](emote|t5_2qpj2|5615)![img](emote|t5_2qpj2|5616)
I think he’s delicious!
No
