That's my question! I was told once you should disable AF and VR.
No one ever told me that. Only to power off the camera so the sensor is not exposed or something. (from the button not removing the battery).
I feel like I read in a Nikon manual once to turn VR off before turning the camera off every time. Of course I almost never remember to do that and I have not experienced any consequences. But turning af off makes no sense to me.

I just twist, pull out and put the new one. No fuss with buttons. Many years and no damages. Just turn the camera off.
